        Book Description

This work explores the problems arising from dynamic information technology in its application to intellectual property rights. In a global marketplace of ideas, political boundaries and the sovereignty of the nation state seem to be disappearing because of the increasing difficulty of scrutinizing the infringement of intellectual property. That is particularly true of computer software, the focus of this book. The work analyzes the legal and political economy implications of investment in the software programming industry and the near-futility of monitoring protection of intellectual property in industry. The book begins by exploring the current state of copyright laws for computer software. It analyzes the economic theories of demand elasticities, public choice, clubs, and the concept of public goods as those theories apply to intellectual property, particularly computer software. This analysis is followed by a discussion of prevailing legislation in the United States, Europe, Japan, Asia, and China. The analysis is fortified by a comprehensive coverage of the Uruguay Round. The work concludes in favor of the free flow of information, which yields overwhelming benefits to a globally integrated market.

                      Book Description

Law Without Frontiers is a comparative study dealing with the rules of professional ethics applicable to the cross-border practice of law. It covers the major jurisdictions in this respect, viz. England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. A separate chapter deals with the development in the context of the European Union. The study is based on a questionnaire of the IBA Section on Business Law Subcommittee on the Structure and Ethics of Business Law. Part One of each country's report covers the basic rules applying to the domestic legal profession, such as the method of qualifying as a lawyer, the extent to which the legal services are reserved to lawyers, and the ethical rules which apply to matters like advertising, fees, correspondence, etc. The Second Part sets out what rules the jurisdiction in question imposes on its own lawyers when they are involved outside the jurisdiction. The Third Section deals with the rules which apply to a foreign lawyer (which includes any lawyer admitted in another jurisdiction but not in the local jurisdiction under discussion) practising within the jurisdiction. Both the second and third parts are divided according to the various degrees of possible involvement, ranging from merely advising a foreign client from one's home office to practising from an office in the foreign country. The last Part deals with the various kinds of international associations to which lawyers may belong, such as alliances, office-sharing, and multinational and multidisciplinary partnerships. The editor draws conclusions in the last chapter and sets out where the cross-border practice is heading. A number of useful appendices are supplied, setting out the most important texts, including the IBA International Code of Ethics.

2 out of 5 stars What about other women in North America? How do you define success?.......2006-10-30

I am looking at this book due to a recommendation in "mean girls grown up" by Dellasega. I am disappointed as it seems to marginalize women who really sacrifice to prioritize their family or other non-fame, non-money related fields. Is the home educator who works part time and mentors her own great kids, and neighbourhood not in need of a mentor? Is she less intelligent because she makes less money or because she's less famous? I would like to see feminist writing that is more inclusive of real women's experiences and more varied need for mentoring.

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational book - mentors behind success of 52 women!.......2001-09-11

To be a mentor we learn in Mary Doyle's great new book, is to be a teacher, guide, example, encourager, facilitator and enabler. Mentoring Heroes offers the stories of 52 successful women and the mentors who empowered them. Thus, this book is a revelation of leaders inspiring others to become leaders to make their lives and their world better.

Here are the stories of but a few very successful women and how they rose to the top with the assistance and selflessness of their mentors. Ms. Doyle is very quick to point out that often the mentor was male, and often the mentoring was facilitated to no small degree by Divine Guidance.

Several of the success stories involve women this reviewer (and perhaps you, too) are aware of---for instance, actress, singer and motivational speaker Ann Jillian; Senior Marketing Vice resident of Sales Operations for BP Amoco Petroleum Products Anna
Cheng Catalano; archeologist with New York Metropolitan Museum of Art Diana Craig Patch, Ph.D. and Barbara Junceau, professional astrologer for personal and spiritual counseling.

On the other hand, most of these fabulous women are quietly leading their successful lives, each in their own venues and each very real. How did they do it? How did they make the time? How did they put their mentor's advice to work? And how have they become mentors in their own right? This reviewer exhorts you to read the book!

To be a mentor is to give of oneself to assist in the development of others. The reader will quickly ascertain that a prime example of such nobility is author Mary K. Doyle, herself. By writing and publishing Mentoring Heroes, Mary has opened a door for all of us. It is no wonder that this book won the Certificate of Excellence, National Publisher's Freedom Award, 2000. Mentoring Heroes is an inspiration!

5 out of 5 stars True-life, illustrative, informative, inspiring, motivating........2000-08-05

In Mentoring Heroes, Mary Doyle shows how fifty-two women attained high levels of professional and personal success both with the counseling, guidance, advice, and support of mentors, someone who helped them in a one-to-one relation acquire the knowledge, expertise, and experience to succeed. Mentoring Heroes also shows how these women passed on to others the gift of mentoring they themselves had received. Covering a wide diversity of occupations and careers, these true-life, illustrative stories are as engaging as they are informative, as inspiring as they are motivational. Mentoring Heroes is enthusiastically recommended reading and a welcome addition to women's studies reading lists and reference collections.

This "crash course" in business-to-business marketing is an excellent introduction for the newcomer and a worthwhile refresher for the veteran. Barry Silverstein is convinced that the Internet will soon replace direct mail as the primary vehicle for business-to-business direct marketing. Silverstein doesn't promote spam, but discusses how the Internet has changed marketing and how principles of sound direct marketing can be applied to the Internet in fresh ways.

Silverstein presents dozens of techniques than can be applied to five major strategies, each invaluable in building business profitability. The first is a set of techniques for generating and qualifying leads online. Next, he demonstrates approaches to using Internet events as means to promote products and services. Then he discusses using the Internet's advantages in delivering instant-fulfillment service. The ins and outs of generating orders over the Net come next, followed by the means of using the Internet to build and solidify relationships with your customers. Silverstein backs up his points with excellent real-world examples and a variety of case studies. 4 out of 5 stars Versatility of B2B Internet Marketing.......2000-07-03

This book starts with a very good refresher course in B2B direct marketing. Barry Silverstein then covers seven different B2B Internet direct marketing strategies for increasing profits in a luxury of details. The companion site is a good complement to the book for that purpose. Barry Silverstein is very good at generating ideas that both beginners and experienced marketers could use for building marketing programs. The author gives some ROI applications to illustrate his point. Unfortunately, Barry Silverstein does not give screenshots of good and bad direct marketing applications. To paraphrase Jakob Nielsen at the beginning of his last book, "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity", the reason to give those screenshots is not to criticize or praise specific sites, companies, designers or marketers. The screenshots are used to illustrate direct marketing techniques because it is difficult to understand abstract theory without concrete examples. Unlike Arthur Hughes in his last book, "Strategic Database Marketing", Barry Silverstein seems to limit his description of case studies to success stories. One of the main goals of a reference book is to help other marketers avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Despite those shortcomings, Business-to-Business Internet Marketing is currently the leading authority on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but Basic & Boring.......2000-06-17

A good book for beginners, but not for anyone with at least a few months of marketing experience. All chapters have good summaries and occasional case studies. I've been doing marketing for about 2 years and find some of the general strategies helpful. For example, he advises using call-to-action strategies, but doesn't go into details about the tricks of the implementation. Also, the first chapter on direct marketing is excellent in that it ties in well conceptually with internet marketing. Overall, I would say not worth your time if you're a professional, skim it if you've had some experience, and a good buy if you're an absolute beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book and terrific companion Web site.......2000-02-12

This is an outstanding book. It covers 7 specific b-to-b Internet marketing strategies in detail with plenty of real-world examples. It's one of the best books on the topic. The companion site is a real bonus - it has a "living table of contents" with links to every site mentioned in the book, plus an exhaustive resources section. Highly recommended!

                      5 out of 5 stars Companion site - a true resource.......2000-02-10

The book was great to help me understand how to increase the effectiveness of internet marketing techniques, and the companion site was a hands-on resource! I was able to surf sites on topics ranging from Internet Advertising Networks and Placement to Web Portals and Search Engines. The companion site showed me best in class examples, as well as lead me to sites that will help me execute better Internet marketing programs. I recommend the companion site as a true portal to the best sites on the Web for Internet marketing professionals!

1 out of 5 stars The Companion Web Site is Terrible.......2000-02-09

I noticed that several of the links in the book are no longer active. I went to the companion Web site hoping to get an update. Boy, was I disappointed! I found a little more than 25 links and nothing else! The companion web site was supposed to be a major selling point of the book, but it did NOT live up to its promise. Shame to the publisher.

                        2 out of 5 stars This isn't really a book.......2002-10-15

First of all the content is, well, okay. But don't expect this to be what you expect a book to . It is really really thin-- only 63 pages long. Most magazines are thicker. When I opened the box, I thought it was empty. The book was so thin I didn't notice it was under the invoice ! Fair enough;one might argue that you can say a lot in 63 pages. But wait a minute! That's not all. Clearly half of the pages have huge blank spaces...for you to fill the blanks with your exercises, you see.It is,after all, a workbook. Then there are completely empty pages in between chapters that are counted within the 63 pages. But what makes this so unforgiveable is that most the pages that are full have huge margins to the sides, top, and bottom. Some people might find the content good, but you can get a lot more for your money elsewhere in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good tool for novices; even better with a facilitator.......2001-03-07

This video-and-workbook set are a great introduction to the world of foundation grant proposal development. Like any tool, it's important to know how it should be used. This set will be used best in training situations where a facilitator will be available to assist with interpreting the workbook materials and "fleshing out" some of the concepts. But that's not a requirement; anyone interested in the subject can learn a lot from this introductory material.

I'm a little surprised that the authors/publishers chose to stick with the term "grantwriter:" many foundation staffs believe that THEY are the "grant writers" and that those seeking funding are preparing applications for grant funding. However, the market holds to the term "grantwriter" for proposal applicants, and it is less cumbersome than anything else I've heard to describe those who prepare grant proposals and applications.

Watch the video first, and then tackle the workbook. [In fact, the video makes absolutely no reference to the workbook.] The video's 25 minutes are well-produced and feature foundation grants experts. The videocassette I viewed seemed to have some minor audio problems, but that may have been my equipment rather than the video itself, and in any case, it didn't affect my understanding of the material.

The video presents the twelve elements of a successful foundation grant proposal, from the cover letter through the proposal narrative to the budget and appendices. It also provides some basic tips for writing successful proposals: researching foundations; calling foundations for help; making your grant application easy to read and to navigate; writing in a clear, concise style that accurately presents a compelling case for funding, etc.

People preparing government grant applications show be wary of some of the specific advice in the video (like that to avoid double-spacing in foundation proposals), and I would have liked to see the video emphasize the overriding importance of preparing an application using the funding source's preferred format rather than a single "best practice" format, regardless of how professional it appears. It would also have been nice to see some mention of the workbook in the video, if only to reassure the viewer that they don't have to take copious notes while watching.

The 64-page large format workbook takes the writer through the organizational and "thinking" steps necessary to prepare a good grant application. There are seven exercises to help develop a clear mission and objectives, determine evaluation steps, pencil out a budget, etc. The next section of the workbook shows examples of each of the twelve components of a grant application on the right-side pages. The left-facing pages contain descriptions of each section and tips for writers, similar to the material covered in the video. The workbook's final section provides tips on strategy and structure, and discusses why not all applications are successful, again closely following the content at the end of the video.

The Grantwriter's Start-Up Kit will give novices a good introduction to the subject and some basic tools, and is a great "off the shelf" tool for facilitators and instructors seeking to expose others to the world of grantsmanship.
