This is a good book to keep by your desk, whether you are a veteran trader, a journalist or a novice in the financial markets. The author has done an outstanding job of presenting definitions many of us knew but had forgotten through misuse, as well as adding new ones that have crept recently into the changing marketplace. Well worth getting your hands on one!

      Book Description

The economic crisis of 1997 called East Asia's economic miracle into question and generated widespread criticism of the regions developmental models. However, the crisis did little to alter the growing economic integration of the region which is being forged through American, Japanese and Chinese firms who have created cross-border production networks - led by multinational corporations which span the entire value-chain in a number of industries. This book addresses the changing nature of high-tech industries in Asia, particularly in the electronics sector, where these networks are increasingly designed to foster and to exploit the regions highly heterogenous technology, skills and know-how.

          Book Description

Regionalism is of growing relevance to the political economy of Asia-Pacific. In the wake of the Asian financial crisis, this timely volume investigates in four different chapters the dynamics of Asian regionalism during the 1980s and 1990s. Specifically, it focuses on Japanese and Chinese business networks in Northeast and Southeast Asia and the effects of economic, monetary and financial policies on regional cooperation. Asian regionalism is an important factor that both complements and shapes corporate strategies and government policies in a globalizing economy.

Who will profit when (and if) mainland China goes capitalist in the next century? Not American or European companies, despite their strong desire to invest here. Most of the rewards will flow to expatriate Chinese who fled from Communism in 1949. The authors contribute to the pioneering work of Thomas Sowell's Migrations and Cultures and Joel Kotkin's Tribes in showing how ethnic ties fuel economic prosperity.

            Book Description

The Bamboo Network shows how a remarkable group of ethnic Chinese families has been the driving force behind China's transition from communism to capitalism: the economic miracle" that took the Western business world by surprise. Murray Weidenbaum, a leading international economist, and Samuel Hughes trace the history of these enterprising leaders, who fled the mainland after the Communist takeover in 1948 and settled through out Southeast Asia. Following in the tradition of generations of expatriate Chinese merchants, they began establishing small family businesses. Today, the authors show, these have expanded into conglomerate business empires. Entrusting corporate divisions almost exclusively to relatives, and dealing extensively with fellow expatriates, these entrepreneurs have formed close-knit and formidable business spheres throughout Southeast Asia -- a "bamboo network."

Members of the bamboo network were well-positioned to do business in China when this first became possible: since they "speak the language," both literally and culturally, they were favored as business partners by the both the Chinese government and the emerging private sector. They have been financing and often managing the development of manufacturing, banking, and other key industries in China.

Western investors and entrepreneurs seeking to enter the Chinese market are a step behind the members of the bamboo network. This book evens the score. Weidenbaum and Hughes show how private enterprise can thrive in China, providing unrivaled insight into the philosophy and culture that inform doing business there. The Bamboo Network will be indispensable reading for those who wish to crack the world's largest market and investment opportunity. For, despite the serious domestic problems likely to arise within the region, overseas Chinese business families will no doubt continue to take advantage of changing threats and opportunities in the fastest-growing and most competitive economy in the world. Whether as friends or rivals of the bamboo network, Americans must learn more about this exotic sector of the global marketplace.

            2 out of 5 stars Superficial Coverage.......2001-02-01

This book is a good primer for those unfamiliar with the workings of China's economy and the reforms of the last decade that have fuelled China's growth. It is badly dated now (no fault of the authors) due to the Asian financial crisis. The biggest disappointment is that is deals very little with the book's supposed topic, the role of the overseas Chinese. The last half of the book doesn't even mention them! (well, barely...)

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book but very dated.......2000-03-21

This book is a classic, but the Asian crisis has dated it badly. Also, the author has much anecdotal matter to back up his story, but he did not have intimate access to the Overseas Chinese top managers and this shows. For an intimate account of how the networks operate, and how strategic decisions are made I strongly recommend "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. to supplement this book.

3 out of 5 stars This book needs immediate revision.......1998-01-19

The style of this book is a bird's-eye view gleaned primarily from newpaper reports (as judged by the bibliographic citations). It begins with a delineation of the most visible Overseas Chinese entrepreneur "families." Then it abruptly swerves into an anecdotal rambling about Mainland China's boom economy and how one can not do business there without buying favors from Communist Party officials or from the People's Liberation Army. The reason this book needs a new edition is that its publication predated current "Asian" scandals. One of the ("Indonesian") families showcased by the authors has been in the news for the last year as being the alleged bankroller for "Asian" connected illegal Democratic campaign contributions via bag people who do not appear to have the means to make $100,000 contributions. Likewise, this book reveals why it should not surprise the American Public that the President of the United States has met with arms dealers alleged to be in the employee of the People's Liberation Army. The authors' narrative enables me to make more educated guesses about the real mission of restaurantuer Charlie Tri and the top security clearance trade specialist John Huong. I am rating this book as "average" because it strikes me as a thinly disguised public relations effort to promote more U.S. direct investment in Mainland China "before we miss the boat." It clearly is not a scholarly effort. Read this book for a quick intro to the players, but move on to books with more depth: this arena is important to understand (whatever your world view or prejudices).

5 out of 5 stars Good insight into the Asian-Chinese corporate system........1997-04-12

If you believe in the economic miracle in the new 21st Pacific Century, this is the book to read. It is the "New Industrial Revolution" in the making. It is essential to understand how the "Guanxi" or "network" system works in Asian-run corporations. http://www.singnet.com.sg/~ngrou

This IDC study updates IDC's 2004-2009 forecast for telecommunications network services (TNS) in Asia/Pacific, highlighting new developments, service offerings, technologies, and players.

"IDC does not see absolute growth in all markets in the region. However, the markets that show flat or negative growth in the TNS sector are doing so due to increased competition — not as a result of decreased consumption of or need for such services," observes Claus Mortensen, senior analyst, Telecommunications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.

                    Book Description

Despite the current crisis, Asian economies remain an important market for firms around the world and continue to be stiff competitors in world business. One reason for the region's strength, and a predictor of Asia's endurance, are its business networks--keiretsus in Japan, chaebols in Korea, and other forms that connect single firms, entire industries, and which interlink the region as a whole. Richter and his contributors examine the origins of business networks, their effects on the economies, and the implications of their presence and growth in Asian economies. Corporate strategic planners, marketing executives, and other decision makers will find here an important contribution to their understanding of why Asia's economies will pick up again and how they will continue to grow. The book examines the promises of business networks and the role of transaction costs, interdependence, and membership commitment. The contributors do not automatically assume that past successes of these networks will mean future successes; rather, they define the outlines of new and innovative forms of networks, and see in their configurations an even better platform for further economic development in Asia and for the globalization of Asian multinationals. Contributors offer a critical approach to theory and practice of Asian networking, and because of their national diversity are able to provide a variety of viewpoints on them. Research-based and presenting the thinking of scholars and practitioners alike, the book supplies expert knowledge and a basis for academic discourse on managerial policy not easily found elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Networks and the economic crisis.......2000-07-27

A compendium of chapters by different academics in the field of network theory and its application in Asia. The chapters are strong in describing the dynamics of Asian business networks. The authors avoid the tendancy among many analysts and academics to denigrate the merits of Asian management practices in general and of networks in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden organizational agenda of Japanese success.......1999-09-12

The hidden organizational agenda of Japanese success. ... Recommended Why have Japanese companies become successful? This book offers a new explanation. It is argued that success of Japanese companies is not due to manufacturing prowess; access to cheap capital; or lifetime employment and other human resources management practices - although all of these factors are important. Instead the claim is made that Japanese companies have been successful because of their skills and expertise at creating knowledge in strategic networks. This book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh thoughts about Asian business networks.......1999-09-06

This is a serious book, yet written for a general audience. Without jargon, it brings social science analysis to bear on the Asian business trend that is changing competition in global markets. A must-read.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on interpersonal networking.......1999-09-03

This book is exciting to read, coming as it does in the wake of the collapse of the Japanese bubble economy and the Asian monetary crisis. What looked to be invincible massive corporations now seem to be mere edifices once supported by nepotism and unsecured bank loans. Richter draws on his experience as an editor to select chapters from many authors so take the reader easily through a mass of detail. All in all it builds up to an impressive document, which, far from boring the reader continues to offer insights in the operations of the Asian firm. Many of the contributing authors suggest that organisational slack is to be placed where it can be effective, and this applies also to their use of networks which are to be exploited for the strategic benefit of the co-operating organisations.

Inevitably, in this day and age, the authors grapple with the development of Organisational Learning and the management of Knowledge Creation in the context of firms networking for their joint advantage. And so many authors come to the acknowledgement that the visions of senior management can act at once as goals, and also as the catalyst for individuals to unfold goal-oriented tasks - essentially noting these chief executives have to be both anarchists and organisers within a network setting where other like-minded persons co-operate trustingly.

It provides numerous illustrations to better understand the concepts. The worktext builds on the knowledge students learned in domestic ticketing and focuses on what is new when constructing international airfares.
