    Book Description

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 created the infrastructure for the modern American payments system. Probing the origins of this benchmark legislation, J. Lawrence Broz finds that international factors were crucial to its conception and passage. Until its passage, the United States had suffered under one of the most inefficient payment systems in the world. Serious banking panics erupted frequently, and nominal interest rates fluctuated wildly. Structural and regulatory flaws contributed not only to financial instability at home but also to the virtual absence of the dollar in world trade and payments.

Key institutional features of the Federal Reserve Act addressed both these shortcomings but it was the goal of internationalizing usage of the dollar that motivated social actors to pressure Congress for the improvements. With New York bankers in the forefront, an international coalition lobbied for a system that would reduce internal problems such as recurring panics, and simultaneously allow New York to challenge London's preeminence as the global banking center and encourage bankers to make the dollar a worldwide currency of record. To those who organized the political effort to pass the Act, Broz contends, the creation of the Federal Reserve System was first and foremost a response to international opportunities.

    5 out of 5 stars Clear.......2002-03-09

Broz provides an easy to read text. His premises are clear, leading to true understanding. I've read much on this subject, but never such a complete work. It is as economical as can be expected; and I would argue more general than others have claimed. I highly suggest this book, and thank Dr. Broz for his contribution.

5 out of 5 stars A good blend of theory and historical evidence.......2000-02-25

Broz's "The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System" is a excellent example of how single-case qualitative empirical research should be done. By providing a detailed formal theory framework, Broz is able to derive specific hypothesis about the development of the Federal Reserve in a manner that is both scientifically rigorous and historically detailed. While comparison with other cases would have been helpful (and neccessary if the model is to be generalized), this book is one of the best qualitative works in political science in general and political economy in particular in years.

    5 out of 5 stars Accessible.......1999-09-29

You can't find a more accessible text for this topic. I have scoured the librarys of academia and find that this text is not only readable and enjoyable, but it is superior in its treatment of subject matter. A look at the index will tell any reader that Mr. Broz's volume is the compleat guide.

Don't miss your chance to read this welcoming introductory text.

This book examines selected topics on issues relating to current and future EU developments. In its initial sections, the book focuses on an array of wide-ranging micro (agriculture, industry and competition) and macro (EMU, regional convergence and enlargement) issues. A final section is reserved for discussion on Britain's future relationship with the EU. In particular, the book posits possible alternative strategies (e.g. NAFTA membership and policy frameworks) and examines these from both a theoretical and empirical perspective.

                Book Description

This study investigates the econometric properties of the demand-for-money function as it affects monetary policy. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the general properties of conventional and alternative demand-for-money specifications and on the predictability of those specifications over time. The data sets used for the econometric work of this study constitute an important contribution for the empirical demand for money literature. Most of the existing literature on money demand has been based on U.S. data. An important criticism of that literature is that the various hypotheses about post-1974 demand for money in the United States have been tested on the same body of data that originally suggested the hypotheses. Grivoyannis here uses a new data set-the Japanese data base-for the first time, comparing the results with those obtained for the United States. The comparison is justified because of the significant similarities between the U.S. and Japanese monetary sectors. Thus Grivoyannis is able to reliably test proposed explanations for the recent abnormal behavior of U.S. money demand on a different set of data and offer important new insights into the general properties of money demand functions. Grivoyannis begins by examining conventional short-run demand-for-money specifications, presenting estimation and simulation results from log-level and log-first-difference specifications for both countries. These results are then compared with data-driven "best-variable" specifications. In Chapter 2, the author separates the demand for real M1 into the demand for currency and the demand for demand deposits in order to determine the main source of the function's instability. Sectorally disaggregated demands for real M1 by money holder are also examined in depth. Alternative specifications, which attempt to take into consideration institutional events as well as financial innovation and deregulation, form the focus of the third chapter. Grivoyannis' conclusions support the general suspicion among policy makers that the assumed stability of the money demand relationship has collapsed. Required reading for scholars of monetary policy, econometrics, and macroeconomics, this study will also be of significant interest to students of international finance and banking.

The cover says "Advanced" SOAP. This book is not.
I don't expect to see a book titled "Advanced" to simply
be a basic rehash of the specs that's readily available on
                      the internet.

And the author mentions that a certain topics aren't going to
be discussed because it's "...beyond the scope of this book."
I have a feeling, in fact, I'm pretty certain, that the word
"Advanced" was put on the cover as a ploy to sell more books.
At the price, it's not worth it at all. Maybe for a lot cheaper, it would be useful a useful companion to the spec. But why would you even spend that much on this book? You can just print the spec out yourself. But nothing more.

2 out of 5 stars Not an Advanced SOAP Book.......2002-09-24

This book is meant for people who do not have web technology background and want to get some genernal knowledge about SOAP, XML, WSDL, and UDDI.

The author repeats the sentence "We will not be going into more detail here" for many, many important topics. It is definitely not an advanced SOAP book.

It seems that the author does not understand .NET very well. In Chapter 1, he explains the function of CLR engine as compiling IL code into Windows or Unix based code. Why UNIX? Will Microsoft .NET ever support Unix platform? He wrote the entire Chapter 11 trying to talk about BizTalk server. However, the very first sentence of Chapter 11 he wrote: "Chances are good that you've never used Microsoft's BizTalk server and that you never will". What is the point of writing this? In this whole chapter, he did not even mention that the most important functions of BizTalk are:
                      1. transform many different E*Commerce message formats (EDI, xCBL, cXML, SAP IDoc) into Microsoft XML doc.
                      2. XLANG scheduling and Orchestration.
                      3. Interface with Commerce Server and trading partners for catalog publishing and buying/selling.

The index of the book is not well organized either, missing lots of important references.

The book does not have enough diagrams to support the author's ideas or to describe the relationship among web technology components. You really need to read line by line to understand what he is trying to tell you about.

Final suggestion: Ask yourself what kind of SOAP book you are looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Dont buy this book.......2002-07-11

Donýt bother buying this book. While its not terrible there are to many good books and web resources on SOAP to bother with this. It purports to be a book on advanced SOAP usage yet there seems to be nothing in it that is an advanced discussion of SOAP. The author really only spends 80 pages on SOAP it self-including preamble and non-related text. The rest of the book is UDDI, WSDL, HTTP, XML-RPC, BizTalk and like 167 pages or appendices which are rehashes of information that you can find on the web that are better presented.

The author also does not seem to know his topic very well and occasionally make statements such as SOAP may some day replace EDI which is silly since SOAP basically is a packaging protocol (he calls it a communication protocol which in some sense it is but only in a very general sense) basically defines how data is to be bundled, handled, and referenced. EDI deals with accountability, repudiation, complex exchange of data and programmatic information, is actually a standard, and is designed to model complex process while SOAP is not. Now if he said ebXML might replace EDI then I could take the statement seriously but SOAP will not be able to replace EDI. Its just does not have the capability and is not designed to.

Donýt waste your money and your time on this book by the SAMS or Orielly books!

5 out of 5 stars Now I understand web services, .NET, SOAP, ..........2002-03-20

I've been hearing about SOAP and XML-RPC and .NET and interop and web services for months now, but I didn't *really* know what any of it was. Now I do. This book is GREAT! Simple, down-to-earth, intelligent coverage of SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, XML-RPC, web services, .NET, competing technologies, and some more. Lots of code samples and complete explanation of the code. It focuses on what precisely SOAP is, how it works, where and when to use it.

I read Livingston's Essential XML book, and I hoped this book would be as good. It is. As Homer Simpson says, Nine thumbs up (the one where he was a food critic)!

                        Book Description

Rather than requiring each application on the network to comply with the latest XML-based security specifications, compression algorithms, and business process standards, most organizations will seek to implement centralized intermediaries that will handle these tasks on behalf of the applications. Hardware XML Network Appliances can fill the role of the XML and Web Services intermediary in a credible way.

Forum Systems has produced a hardware appliance that aims to fill the role as Web Services Proxy as and XML "Application Firewall" by processing XML network traffic and applying security, routing, and transformation operations to the data in a transparent manner. They see the XML Network Appliance as an increasingly important device that will become crucial to the acceptance and growth of XML use within the enterprise. Forum has correctly reasoned that security is the primary and most immediate market for these XML Network Appliances.

Mozquito Technologies AG produces a suite of development tools targeted at advanced interactive "form" development using XForms , XHTML, and their Forms Markup Language (FML) in its Mozquito Factory and Matrix product lines. This is important, since like XML, forms represent a structured interchange of data. Forms provide additional specific features such as workflow, auto-fill, and pre-fill form applications that are supported through the use of instance data.
