The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System
J. Lawrence Broz Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0801433320 |
Book Description
The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 created the infrastructure for the modern American payments system. Probing the origins of this benchmark legislation, J. Lawrence Broz finds that international factors were crucial to its conception and passage. Until its passage, the United States had suffered under one of the most inefficient payment systems in the world. Serious banking panics erupted frequently, and nominal interest rates fluctuated wildly. Structural and regulatory flaws contributed not only to financial instability at home but also to the virtual absence of the dollar in world trade and payments.Key institutional features of the Federal Reserve Act addressed both these shortcomings but it was the goal of internationalizing usage of the dollar that motivated social actors to pressure Congress for the improvements. With New York bankers in the forefront, an international coalition lobbied for a system that would reduce internal problems such as recurring panics, and simultaneously allow New York to challenge London's preeminence as the global banking center and encourage bankers to make the dollar a worldwide currency of record. To those who organized the political effort to pass the Act, Broz contends, the creation of the Federal Reserve System was first and foremost a response to international opportunities.

Current Issues in Monetary Policy in the United States and Japan: The Predictability of Money Demand
Elias C. Grivoyannis Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275935639 |
Book Description
This study investigates the econometric properties of the demand-for-money function as it affects monetary policy. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the general properties of conventional and alternative demand-for-money specifications and on the predictability of those specifications over time. The data sets used for the econometric work of this study constitute an important contribution for the empirical demand for money literature. Most of the existing literature on money demand has been based on U.S. data. An important criticism of that literature is that the various hypotheses about post-1974 demand for money in the United States have been tested on the same body of data that originally suggested the hypotheses. Grivoyannis here uses a new data set-the Japanese data base-for the first time, comparing the results with those obtained for the United States. The comparison is justified because of the significant similarities between the U.S. and Japanese monetary sectors. Thus Grivoyannis is able to reliably test proposed explanations for the recent abnormal behavior of U.S. money demand on a different set of data and offer important new insights into the general properties of money demand functions. Grivoyannis begins by examining conventional short-run demand-for-money specifications, presenting estimation and simulation results from log-level and log-first-difference specifications for both countries. These results are then compared with data-driven "best-variable" specifications. In Chapter 2, the author separates the demand for real M1 into the demand for currency and the demand for demand deposits in order to determine the main source of the function's instability. Sectorally disaggregated demands for real M1 by money holder are also examined in depth. Alternative specifications, which attempt to take into consideration institutional events as well as financial innovation and deregulation, form the focus of the third chapter. Grivoyannis' conclusions support the general suspicion among policy makers that the assumed stability of the money demand relationship has collapsed. Required reading for scholars of monetary policy, econometrics, and macroeconomics, this study will also be of significant interest to students of international finance and banking.

Advanced SOAP for Web Development

Don't judge a book by its cover.......2003-07-10
And the author mentions that a certain topics aren't going to
be discussed because it's "...beyond the scope of this book."
I have a feeling, in fact, I'm pretty certain, that the word
"Advanced" was put on the cover as a ploy to sell more books.
At the price, it's not worth it at all. Maybe for a lot cheaper, it would be useful a useful companion to the spec. But why would you even spend that much on this book? You can just print the spec out yourself. But nothing more.

Not an Advanced SOAP Book.......2002-09-24
The author repeats the sentence "We will not be going into more detail here" for many, many important topics. It is definitely not an advanced SOAP book.
It seems that the author does not understand .NET very well. In Chapter 1, he explains the function of CLR engine as compiling IL code into Windows or Unix based code. Why UNIX? Will Microsoft .NET ever support Unix platform? He wrote the entire Chapter 11 trying to talk about BizTalk server. However, the very first sentence of Chapter 11 he wrote: "Chances are good that you've never used Microsoft's BizTalk server and that you never will". What is the point of writing this? In this whole chapter, he did not even mention that the most important functions of BizTalk are:
1. transform many different E*Commerce message formats (EDI, xCBL, cXML, SAP IDoc) into Microsoft XML doc.
2. XLANG scheduling and Orchestration.
3. Interface with Commerce Server and trading partners for catalog publishing and buying/selling.
The index of the book is not well organized either, missing lots of important references.
The book does not have enough diagrams to support the author's ideas or to describe the relationship among web technology components. You really need to read line by line to understand what he is trying to tell you about.
Final suggestion: Ask yourself what kind of SOAP book you are looking for.
Dont buy this book.......2002-07-11
The author also does not seem to know his topic very well and occasionally make statements such as SOAP may some day replace EDI which is silly since SOAP basically is a packaging protocol (he calls it a communication protocol which in some sense it is but only in a very general sense) basically defines how data is to be bundled, handled, and referenced. EDI deals with accountability, repudiation, complex exchange of data and programmatic information, is actually a standard, and is designed to model complex process while SOAP is not. Now if he said ebXML might replace EDI then I could take the statement seriously but SOAP will not be able to replace EDI. Its just does not have the capability and is not designed to.
Donýt waste your money and your time on this book by the SAMS or Orielly books!
Now I understand web services, .NET, SOAP, ..........2002-03-20
I read Livingston's Essential XML book, and I hoped this book would be as good. It is. As Homer Simpson says, Nine thumbs up (the one where he was a food critic)!

ZapNote: Forum Systems ZapNote: Advanced XML Network Appliance
ZapThink , and Ronald D. Schmelzer Manufacturer: ZapThink, LLC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Digital ASIN: B00078U7BW |
Book Description
Rather than requiring each application on the network to comply with the latest XML-based security specifications, compression algorithms, and business process standards, most organizations will seek to implement centralized intermediaries that will handle these tasks on behalf of the applications. Hardware XML Network Appliances can fill the role of the XML and Web Services intermediary in a credible way.Forum Systems has produced a hardware appliance that aims to fill the role as Web Services Proxy as and XML "Application Firewall" by processing XML network traffic and applying security, routing, and transformation operations to the data in a transparent manner. They see the XML Network Appliance as an increasingly important device that will become crucial to the acceptance and growth of XML use within the enterprise. Forum has correctly reasoned that security is the primary and most immediate market for these XML Network Appliances.
