    Book Description

Do accelerating trade and foreign direct investment--experimented by most developing countries in the 1990s--imply a positive, negative, or neutral impact in terms of employment, income inequality and poverty alleviation? This book provides some empirically-tested answers to this question using an open-minded, unconventional economic approach and deriving original policy implications.

      Book Description

This book explains modern macroeconomics. It does not use equations, graphs, diagrams or footnotes. The book is designed to make modern macroeconomics available to those who never had a university course in economics or who had one years ago, now little remembered. The book is non-technical. Since readers are busy, the book is purposely confined to about a hundred pages. It seeks to combat the lack of literacy in basic macroeconomics that is all too evident among Americans. It covers a series of important subjects: resources; national output; living standards; economic growth; employment and unemployment; money and interest rates; inflation; government; deficits and debt; international; productivity; incentives; expectations; income distribution; asset markets; business fluctuations; creative destruction; planning horizons; international convergence; and more.

        Book Description

In today's economy, job loss will likely affect each of us at some point in our careers. Layoffs used to happen only when times were tough, but even a bustling economy is no protection when positions are eliminated, plants are closed, and jobs are shipped overseas in search of even higher profit margins. A toolkit for survival and coping with unemployment, this book explains how to minimize your chances of being laid off, how to negotiate the best outcome during the severance process, and how to re-enter the job market from a position of strength. This book is as important for employers, human resource managers, and outplacement specialists as it is for employees. Just as employees need to be aware of their rights and options, employers need to understand the ramification of their actions. This book provides an understanding of the hiring and firing process from both perspectives. Issues include:
      • How to examine and negotiate your termination package
      • How to determine if you need an attorney--and how to select one
      • How to prove your dismissal was inappropriate or illegal
      • How to move from a bad job situation to a better one

5 out of 5 stars A great "toolkit" for career survival.......2003-12-20

As a recently laid off executive I found this book to be full of valuable information to help me cope with the job loss, organize an effective job search plan and be better prepared for the next job. A short review like this cannot do justice to the amount of helpful and practical information contained in the book. I highly recommend the book to any executive who has been laid off or feels at risk.

Mr. Allen Smith is great! My first exposure to Mr. Smith was from a book I picked up at a flea market for fifty cents. I have been seeking out and buying his books ever since. Mr. Smith is a teacher. He states his case, he explains his case, and then he repeats his case. But when you are done reading one of his books you will (or certainly should) understand the material. So far I have read his book dealing with the national debt, his book on inflation and his latest on the struggling Social Security System. They are all basic primers. This is the guy you start with. He does the job.

                    Book Description

Commenting on the quality of the contributors when opening the conference on which these books are based, the Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Edward George, said "I cannot remember ever before having had such a galaxy of academic economist and central banking superstars gathered together under one roof!''

Celebrating the contribution that Charles Goodhart has made to monetary economics and policy, this unique compendium of original papers draws together a highly respected group of international academics, central bankers and financial market regulators covering a broad range of issues in modern monetary economics. Topics discussed include:

                    • central bank independence
                    • credibility and transparency
                    • the inflation forecast and the loss function
                    • monetary policy experiences in the US and the UK
                    • the implications of Goodhart's Law
                    • the benefits of single versus multiple currencies
                    • money, near monies and credit.

Each chapter of the volume relates to subjects that have been research projects in Charles Goodhart's wide-ranging portfolio, and all are interconnected. Through these, the book offers a summary of current thinking and insights into monetary controversies.

Covering recent scholarship on monetary theory, central banking, financial regulation and international finance, academic and professional economists alike will find this book an invaluable source of information.

The companion volume examines monetary history, exchange rates and financial markets.

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting new approach to integration.......2005-04-12

This book was very solid technically, and a fascinating read. On the development side, it is filled with ideas and examples, some of which showed me completely different approaches to common problems. Conceptually, the book is even richer, not only explaining complex technologies in simple ways, but showing how some seemingly unrelated technological developments from the past few years can fit and work together. Overall, I think the book's most worthwhile aspect is the way it married its overall vision, which anticipates the future of integration and knowledge-driven computing, with very specific design and code examples that I could incorporate into my practice right away. A top book for people who want to stay ahead of the pack in the latest practical developments that will shape information architecture for the future.

                      Book Description

XML is bringing together some fairly disparate groups into a new cultural clash: document developers trying to understand what a transaction is, database analysts getting upset because the relational model doesn't fit anymore, and web designers having to deal with schemata and rule based transformations. The key to rising above the confusion is to understand the different semantic structures that lie beneath the standards of XML, and how to model the semantics to achieve the goals of the organization.
A pure architecture of XML doesn't exist yet, and it may never exist as the underlying technologies are so diverse. Still, the key to understanding how to build the new web infrastructure for electronic business lies in understanding the landscape of these new standards.
If your background is in document processing, this book will show how you can use conceptual modeling to model business scenarios consisting of business objects, relationships, processes, and transactions in a document-centric way. Database designers will learn if XML is subject to relational normalization and how this fits in with the hierarchical structure of XML documents. Web designers will discover that XML puts them into a position to automatically generate visually pleasing web pages and rich multimedia shows from otherwise dry product catalogues by using XSLT and other transformation tools. Business architects will see how XML can help them to define applications that can be quickly adapted the ever changing requirements of the market.

                        Book Description

Tier1 Innovation is a midsize IT professional services firm who is building an SOA practice on top of a successful Siebel implementation practice. Their SOA approach is iterative: they help companies understand and plan SOA while they implement pilot projects that take advantage of their clients' existing IT infrastructure—an approach that helps them build trust among their clients.

Tier1 offers a remarkably innovative approach to building and implementing SOA. Rather than simply considering Services to be thin veneers over traditional, tightly-coupled systems, Tier1 sees SOA as an overarching approach toward building highly dynamic systems that companies can quickly reconfigure using metadata and events—a flexible approach to SOA ZapThink calls just-in-time integration.

                          Book Description

Ubiquitous computing -- connecting all the systems in an enterprise into a single, well-oiled IT infrastructure that responds quickly and efficiently to the needs of the business -- is one of the primary goals of many IT managers today. After all, today's economy is information-based, and the better a company can leverage the information it has in its systems, the more competitive it will be.

For ubiquitous computing to be a reality, however, companies must address many tough issues. Systems must communicate with each other. There must be a flexible, resilient architecture that guides the operation of the IT infrastructure. And the business must be able to use the IT resources at its disposal to create and execute the processes that drive the business. But all of these issues depend on one key element: all the systems within the enterprise must communicate with the network.

It has typically been very difficult, however, to place closed systems on the network -- and every company has closed systems, often in mission critical roles. Enter a new class of device: the hardware XML edge device that enables closed systems to communicate with the network via XML.

Once closed devices are on the network, the ability to output XML is necessary for ubiquitous computing, because XML offers the flexibility and power necessary to enable closed devices to participate fully in today's IT architectures.
