Book Description

Press covergae of the sex trade in Thailand routinely consists of ill-informed, moralising and sensationalist denunciations of the industry. Through the words of sex workers and their clients, acclaimed journalist Jeremy Seabrook reconsiders the popular conception of the sex industry and explores the complex relationship between sex and tourism. In doing so he presents an objective, unmoralizing, and sensitive view of the industry. Travels in the Skin Trade is now reissued with a new Preface.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-01-13

This is an excellent book and as real as it gets. Highly recommended. I have read the book several times. It really helps you understand why so many predatory low lives wind up in Thailand chasing prostitutes. It really is very interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Not much new here.......2001-12-17

This volume is interchangeable with any number of of other sociological tomes. The author tries to depict a cross section of aging customers, some human slaves working in debt bondage after being sold (often by their parents) to a brothel.some of the helping organizations-but it doesn't hold together very well as a book unless you have been living on another planet of late. The inclusion of sex in the title is somewhat misleading as this could just as easily be about poor Pakistanis in slavery to brick kilns.

5 out of 5 stars this book is good.......2001-04-14

this book is very informative and blows the lid off the illusion of paradise that thailand is perceived by many to be. the real truth of the relationships between the prostitutes and the "farangs" is exposed in detail. if you want to know why men seek out these prostitutes, how long the relationships last, why the prostitutes treat the johns as they do, and if you want to understand the miscommunication and false feelings that go on between john and prostitute, this is the book to read. the harsh reality of thailand is exposed.

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive, revealing look at the seamier side of tourism.......1998-02-23

Studs Terkel-style, Seabrook presents interviews, recorded and transcribed, with both sex workers and their mostly male clients in Bangkok, Thailand. This powerful volume peruses the commodification of sexuality, the sex trade, through the eyes and voices of the men who tramp the sex markets--the bars and brothels--and the women, men and children who service them. Also, addressed are a variety of related topics, including the global economy and developing countries, sociocultural costs of economic development, organized sex tours and agencies, human rights, children's rights, and HIV / AIDS. A highly readable travelogue, recommended for tourists, travel agents, and anyone interested in this controversial and sordid subject.

          Book Description

Tourism is booming worldwide--it makes up a massive part of the global economy. Donald G. Reid's book focuses on tourism in developing and less-developed countries. He examines its social and environmental impact and offers a timely critical analysis of the part it plays in globalization. Many of the world's poorest countries rely on the tourist trade for the major part of their income. However, all too often, the local communities involved do not reap the benefits of this trade. Developers often exclude local communities from the initial planning and decision-making process, viewing them either as a benign resource to be exploited, or as an impediment. Reid presents a rigourous critique of corporate-led tourism development and lays out alternatives that would give planning and control to the local communities involved. He argues that only in this way can the vastly differing requirments of each community be addressed, and social and environmental issues can be dealt with properly. The book includes a discussion of macro planning theory, and offers three case studies of locally controlled projects that show clearly how communities developing a tourist trade can benefit from it.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Summary of the book.......2006-03-31

The book is a practical guide to effective tourism planning and development, especially in developing and less-developed countries. Its focus is to criticize the dominant tourism planning approach that is financially-oriented and assert the importance of considering the local community and the environment in the tourism planning process. Mainly, the book has (1) a theoretical part explaining tourism planning theories and criticizing the present tourism approaches and (2) a practical part providing a holistic or interdisciplinary planning approach for effective tourism planning. The book provides background on how globalization, capitalism and politics affect the planning process and outcomes of tourism. It also sheds light on the point that tourism is mostly planned and viewed from the economic perspective and is more concerned with increasing incomes for the country's development. This book is a research project supported with three case studies that demonstrate how tourism is planned and practiced. The main aims of the book are to provide a critique of present tourism models, to offer an effective model for tourism planning, and more importantly to show the need for a shift to a holistic tourism planning approach including the local community who is not benefiting and ignored in tourism planning process.

              Book Description

Can knowledge of financial policies in developing countries over four decades help the socialist economies of Asia and Eastern Europe become open market economies in the 1990s? In all these countries the loss of fiscal and monetary control has often resulted in high inflation that undermines the liberalization process itself. In the second edition of The Order of Economic Liberalization, Ronald McKinnon builds on his influential work on the liberalization of financial markets in less developed countries and outlines the progression necessary to move from a "repressed" to an open economy.

New to this edition are chapters that contrast the gradual Chinese approach to liberalizing domestic and foreign trade with the "big bang" approach followed by some Eastern European countries and republics of the former Soviet Union. Financial control and macroeconomic stability, McKinnon argues, are more critical to a successful transition than is any crash program to privatize state-owned industrial assets and the banking system.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compilation of good policy decisions.......2003-02-17

This book takes the opposite position of Jeffrey Sachs' big bang theory of economic reform. Instead of a big bang, McKinnon suggests a particular order to economic liberalization in order to maintain some stability during the transition process. He uses many examples to show that, for example, fiscal stability should come first, which is a lesson that has proven itself current with Argentina's and Turkey's cases in the early 2000s. This is a book that, though has a strong economics foundation, leaves something to be desired in terms of rigour of economic analysis. Instead, it was written I think particularly for the usage of policy-makers who may not be familiar with technical economic jargon.

              4 out of 5 stars Student.......2001-04-17

This book gives insight knowledge about the monetary and fiscal policy making in the developing countries. First ten chapters of the book desribes the expereince of Far Eastern and Latin American countries' financial reforms during the 1960-80s. Especially, it would be interesting to read about the reasons of Japanese as well as Korean miraculous growth during the above mentioned period. Besides, last three chapters explain the case of transitional countries of ex-socialist economies. In his last chapters, the author compares the Russian big bang effect with Chinese gradual reforms. He also points out on the importance of fiscal as well as the liberation policies in those transional countries. Since it is based on the development models of many countries in the world,in brief, I think, the book would be very useful for the policymakers in almost all developing countries.

Lack of coordination of fiscal and monetary policies, disregard for the high degree of inflation persistency, unstable relations and bilateral causality between money supply and inflation, all imply an inappropriateness of money-based stabilizations for the transition economy of postcommunist Russia conducted under the auspices of the IMF. As a representative of the West, the IMF pretended to aid Russians through stabilisation. The IMF promised loans while the Russian government promised reforms. This turned out to be a pseudo lending for pseudo reforms with disastrous consequences for the Russian economy as explored and scrutinized in this volume.

                  Book Description

The process of transition from a centrally planned economy to one driven primarily by market forces has been a source of controversy and debate. Although the pace and approach has varied we are now beginning to understand some of the essential ingredients necessary for a successful transition. These changes have produced a tremendous quantity of literature which can make it difficult to grasp the most important issues. This book focuses on the key questions and problems facing the monetary and financial sectors of transitional economies, specifically in Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. It examines many of the reforms, why these proved necessary, and their impact in the early stages of transition. The authors focus on four main themes: The removal of state intervention and its effect on liquidity and the availability of credit The failure of credit markets and the implications for corporate finance The role of property rights and the importance of bankruptcy in a well-functioning market economy Effects of the separation of the central bank from commercial lending functions, and its consequences for the overall operation of monetary policy in a transitional economy Money and Finance in the Transition to a Market Economy will be essential reading for those wishing to learn more about the financial and monetary implications of the transition to a market economy in the Central and Eastern European countries. It will be welcomed by graduates, academics, researchers and policy makers alike.

                    Book Description

This groundbreaking book analyses the geography of the commercial Internet industry during the dot-com boom. It presents the first accurate map of Internet domains in the world, by country, by region, by city, and for the United States, by neighborhood.Contrary to the predictions of some futurologists, the book demonstrates the extraordinary spatial concentration of the industry and the continued relevance of geography to patterns of economic development in the twenty-first century.Based on in-depth interviews and field work in two key areas - San Francisco Bay Area and New York City - Matthew Zook provides a lucid and theoretically-informed argument supported by appropriate evidence. His book will be of interest to all those concerned about inequalities arising or being perpetuated through unequal access to technology and the factors driving regional economic development.

Zook demonstrates that physical geography continues to be a paramount factor in where a startup is located. His study is from the dot com era, and shows the striking correlation and clumping of US startups. Silicon Valley dominates, unsurprisingly. But then there are also major clusters in Seattle, New York, Austin, Los Angeles and Boston.

The book shows the prediliction of people in any industry to aggregate, even, or perhaps especially, when there is intense competition between companies in that industry. Ultimately, the clumping benefits the industry, by permitting an easier transfer of ideas and people. So that successful ideas and companies can grow.

                      Book Description

The 1990s dawned with a belief that the digital revolution would radically transform our traditional notion of cities as places of commerce and industry. Many predicted that digital technology would render cities--or at least their economies--obsolete. Instead, precisely the opposite happened. The IT-intensive firms of the "new economy" needed to be plugged into a sizeable network of talent, something that established cities like New York and San Francisco provided in abundance.
In addition to creating new types of jobs and luring thousands of workers back into the city, new media districts created a new technobohemian urban culture. With vignettes of the high-rollers in New York's new media economy and stories of wild parties in downtown lofts, Michael Indergaard introduces us to the players in this new economy, and explores this intersection of commerce and culture in 1990s New York. He also reveals how the dot-com crash laid bare the hidden connections between the so-called new economy of new media, andthe ages old engines of New York wealth: real estate speculators and Wall Street.
Chronicling the go-go years and ultimate crash of the new media district, Silicon Alley is a brilliant account of how hype forged a marriage of technology and finance, which in turn generated a new urban culture.

Smaller and lighter than the most compact laptop, Cybercafes is an indispensable guide for the traveler who wants to stay connected without the weight, hassle, and responsibility of lugging expensive computer machinery around the world. It's an extremely user-friendly little book. Organized by geographic regions, it also provides an index listing for dozens of cafés by name. For each café--take L'Heroïque Sandwich in Bordeaux, France, for example--the guide includes the street address, fax and phone numbers, and e-mail and Web-site address (if applicable); gives instructions on how to find it (near Grosse Cloche, in the case of L'Heroïque); tells the hours, prices (and which credit cards are accepted), and facility amenities (number of computers, availability of color, and black and white, printers), as well as any nearby places to visit. Other details are included too, such as whether the café has scanners, video-conferencing software, or America Online software, and whether the café offers any special discounts or freebies to bearers of the guidebook. The author explains cybercafé basics for first-timers, taking you step-by-step through opening an e-mail account and accessing it on the road, and she also describes the various sorts of cybercafés that exist, with their distinct atmospheres and clientele. Another bonus is a short list of great World Wide Web sites, including one that regularly updates the list of cybercafés. Small enough to fit in a back pocket, Cybercafes gives you the wherewithal to send and check e-mail in 65 countries, from Malta and Zimbabwe to Pakistan and Uruguay, and all across the U.S. It's a serious improvement over pawing through dusty, distant poste restantes, hoping for the rare letter that's addressed to you.

4 out of 5 stars Good for travelers but not RV's.......2000-02-01

I should have read the reviews better. This is not meant for people touring with RV's. One problem is that is catagorized by country then city. When we are pulling a trailer across country, we want to start with the geographical area at the state level (or smaller) then the town. Also only about 54 pages (of 308) are for sites in the US. That's a lot of pages an RVer will probably not us. In my other life I travel a lot worldwide. This book would be very useful for that situation.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book! A must for e-mailers on the road!.......1998-05-07

This cybercafe guide is so wonderful for traveling! I took this compact book with me while on the road recently and found it very useful. It saved me a fortune in long distance calls that I would have otherwise had to make. I loved being able to keep in touch without having to worry about time zones. It was so easy to find the cafes by using the information listed. I was able to combine breakfast with keeping in touch with my family and the office. I also met some great locals! I'm taking it with me to Europe this summer for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful guidance on keeping your workplace safe .......2007-07-19

Many workplaces seem quite safe. There are no open mine-shafts to fall into, no baths of sulfuric acid to spill, no explosives lying about ready to be ignited. And yet, according to professional safety consultants Dan Hopwood and Steve Thompson, every workplace needs a detailed, current and well-documented program to protect the health and safety of employees. While the hazards have changed, the risk of injury remains. Rather than spiraling down a mine-shaft, a worker might get a repetitive stress injury. Rather than spilling acid in the doughnuts, a worker might pull a muscle lifting a heavy box. Rather than dropping a cigarette onto some dynamite, a worker might inhale an irritant that causes a chronic lung condition. In each case, the results can include missed work, disrupted lives, insurance claims that increase your premiums and fines for regulatory violations. This brief book will help you avoid all that, whether you are just starting your safety program or re-engineering it. Many checklists and useful appendices nicely complement the text. We feel safe recommending this sensible guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for a New Safety Professional.......2007-03-12

Steve and Dan have written a concise book that outlines step-by-step what all new safety professionals need to know in order to create a positive safety culture within their organizations. The Appendix, References and Resources sections are the best I have ever seen. For any person given the responsibility of safety management and who want to "save lives, prevent injuries and illnesses and protect their companies from financial harm", this is the place to begin. Thank you Steve and Dan for this contribution to protect our workforce, and help to ensure that everyone has a chance to go home safe each night to their families.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, very well-written, and so useful !.......2007-03-07

Dan and Steve successfully put together not just a well-written book loaded with many outstanding hints and ideas, they also included so many practical tools that the small to medium sized business can begin using immediately to improve workplace safety. It should be a "must read" for any business if they are really serious about this often overlooked issue. If just some of the ideas suggested by Dan and Steve are implemented, it can have a dramatic impact not only on employee safety and morale, but bottom-line profits as well. Thanks Dan and Steve !!

5 out of 5 stars Usable, valuable, readable, and refreshing!.......2007-03-01

Finally . . . a user-friendly, efficient, and effective risk managment and loss control tool for everyday business. Workplace Safety will actuall save lives, prevent injuries and illnesses, and help every reader to avoid the financial hardship and administrative nightmare associated with any injury. Thank you Steve and Dan for bringing safety out of the classroom and putting it on the front line where it belongs.

5 out of 5 stars If safety is important, Workplace Safety is a "must read"........2007-02-28

Steve and Dan have written a book that is a "must have" for those looking for a comprehensive but easy to follow resource around which to build an effective workplace safety program. It provides the perfect mix of well-thought-out strategy and practical tools to address illness and injury in the workplace. It is an easy read but it has the depth necessary to make a difference. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in creating a safe working environment.
