    Book Description

i Translation and Globalization /i is a critical exploration of the ways in which radical changes to the world economy have affected contemporary translation. br The Internet, new technology, machine translation and the emergence of a worldwide, multi-million dollar translation industry have dramatically altered the complex relationship between translators, language and power. In this book, Michael Cronin looks at the changing geography of translation practice and offers new ways of understanding the role of the translator in globalized societies and economies. Drawing on examples and case studies from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, the author argues that translation is central to debates about language and cultural identity, and shows why consideration of the role of translation and translators is a necessary part of safeguarding and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity. br i Translation and Globalization /i is essential reading for anyone with an interest in translation, or a concern for the future of our world's languages and cultures.

        Book Description

'Critical Zone 2 confirms the success of the inaugural volume. Focusing on a twenty-first century paradigm of comparative AND globalized cultural studies, Critical Zone takes direction from a distinctly Sinicized historical tradition. Testifying to an ascendant China, this “Forum of Chinese and Western Knowledge” also expropriates, re-orients, and indigenizes comparative cultural studies with new, sharp edges, engaging and challenging critical workers from the West. “Local particularities” are understood rightly through a global vocabulary. Critical Zone is an ambitious contemporary intertext, a forum for dialogue in which Chinese and Western scholars and theorists can learn from and about each other. ' - Shirley Geok-lin Lim, Professor of English, University of California, Santa Barbara The first part of Critical Zone 2 includes original essays that deal with the concept and practice of “empire,” as a collective response to the question of how imperial formations and operations, in the past and at present, should be examined in a larger context of international politics. The second part translates from the Chinese essays that bear on two contemporary debates in China: one on the canonicity of Lu Xun and the other on the problem of how to reform Peking University in the context of globalization. A contextualizing introduction is provided for each debate.

              Book Description

Metaphors allow us to describe something new in terms of the familiar. They are culturally and ideologically grounded and help structure language, thoughts, and attitudes. The network of empire building was sustained through a system of metaphors that saw and depicted the colonizer as superior, powerful, and beneficial, and the indigenous population as deviant and primitive. Colonial metaphors included such images as bringing "light" to dark, barbaric places; "journeying" to uncharted lands; and "educating" ignorant natives. This volume studies how Salman Rushdie reworks and reimagines colonial metaphors in his postcolonial novels. The book looks at five overarching metaphors in Rushdie's writings: "migration," or the transfer of people and their ideologies; "translation," the process of representing something from one language into another; "hybridity," the fusing together of disparate cultural elements; "blasphemy," the desecration of sacred beliefs by altering their representation; and "globalization," the homogenization of cultures. By reconstructing these metaphors in his novels, Rushdie challenges established colonial ways of understanding the world, undermines imperialist power structures, and introduces alternative visions of reality.

                      Book Description

The IDC Software Market Forecaster (SMF) is the software industry's most flexible tool for market segmentation. It provides a comprehensive view of the global software market in an easy-to-use electronic pivot table format that allows users to manipulate the data in useful ways tailored to your needs. The data in this pivot table provides 2001-2003 vendor shares for 16 companies in the Translation/Globalization Applications software market. The SMF pivot table can be used to segment market revenue by four geographic regions and nine operating environments. A distinctive feature of the SMF is that one can view a company's revenue across software markets. The pivot table format offers the flexibility to "slice and dice" the software revenue beyond what is published in IDC's written analysis.

This SMF pivot table does not include market forecasts. However, this data is included in the companion SMF pivot table PT582.

The Software Market Forecaster pivot tables are add-on products that complement IDC's Continuous Intelligence Services (CISs). Updates to the five year market forecasts will be released again in September and in December.

Some key questions that the Software Market Forecaster product subscriptions help answer include the following:

The packaged software revenue information provided in the SMF is organized by the same 2004 IDC Software Taxonomy that is a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive means of classifying packaged software revenue. This product allows users to choose the software markets that are appropriate to your needs. More information regarding the SMF is available at www.idc.com/software/forecaster, where the SMF may be purchased at the worldwide, primary, secondary, or individual market level.

Additional information about the SMF includes the following:

                      Customer Reviews:

                      5 out of 5 stars A Singular Single-Source.......2000-11-29

Here is one of the best of the hundreds of books which cover most (if not all) of the same subjects in a single volume. The authors of this one combine a textbook (without pedantry) with a manual (without condescension). Their material is organized in a series of "Units":

                      1. Overture [eg "The Communication Process"]

                      2. Managing Relationship Life in the Workplace [eg "The Art of Listening"]

                      3. Managing Work Life in the Workplace [eg "Managing Stress and Conflict"]

                      4. Managing Public Life in the Workplace [eg "Establishing Your Presentation Goals"]

                      5. Managing Techno-Life in the Workplace [eg "Three Tips for Managing Techno-Life Competencies"]

As these "Unit" titles correctly suggest, the authors provide both a system and a process to increase business and professional communication skills. They include a wealth of specific suggestions as well as real-world examples which suggest HOW to derive the greatest benefit, both from the system and the process. For whom will this book be most valuable? For experienced executives, it offers basic but useful reminders of what they probably know already (at least untuitively) or what they have learned empirically; for less-experienced executives, it offers what may well be new ideas, strategies, and tactics which can help to accelerate their career development.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for both students and professionals!.......1999-08-05

As a student, I used this book for a class and continue to use it every day as a reference tool as a professional. The authors provide thorough insight backed by years of professional experience. I would stongly suggest this book to any individual looking to enhance their professional skills/appearance prior to or upon entering the workforce, and professors in business management and/or communication arts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent business communicat. text relevent to 21st Century.......1998-02-01

Book is divided into four easy-to-read sections: relational life, work life, public life, and techno-life. Addresses such topics as listening, communication styles, workplace diversity, leadership, business etiquette, public speaking, stress and conflict, and computer technology. Handy reference for every day use. Toolboxes in each chapter provide self-analysis check list on various business communication topics. I highly recommend it for classroom, business, and for personal use.

                            Book Description

This book provides a complete overview of timeshare development and operation models. The authors take a comprehensive look at the present and future of this growing segment of the hospitality industry, including specialized approaches to marketing, human resources, service quality, finance, legal considerations and professional ethics.

Timeshare, or vacation ownership, is a relatively recent leisure phenomenon. It emerged in the late 1950s as a way to secure extra capital resources to fund property expansion. Shareholders had the right to use these properties on a regular basis. Although arrangements have grown in complexity and variation, the model allows for customers to buy rights to use a property for a fixed time period each year. Timeshare arrangements have experienced rapid international growth particularly in the last fifteen to twenty years and are now an important vacation arrangement. Most of the world's major hotel and resort developers now operate timeshare properties. Firms like Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Disney and Ramada have brought a new formality and legitimacy to timeshare development and operation.

                            * Covers the fastest growing area in the hospitality industry
                            * Takes operational approach the entire timeshare product, not just marketing & sales
                            * Clarifies the mystery of the timeshare product, cuts through preconceptions

                            1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2006-12-08

This book is filled with meaningless information. In fact, information is duplicated throughout the book as if to fill empty space. It seems at times the content serves as a commercial for the timeshare industry, and the ARDA association. This book lacks structure, is devoid of substance, and is an example of a simplistic lazy attempt at writing. Not worth my reading time.

                            2 out of 5 stars Not a good text.......2002-06-30

This book is not worth purchasing if you have any knowledge whatsoever of the hotel industry. It attempts to cover too many topics in too little space and fails to penetrate the surface of any given issue. I think that it is probably too much to ask that an in depth analysis of an industry as diverse and complex as the hotel industry be compiled into a single volume.
