    Book Description

As population aging has become increasingly acute in many countries, the debate over how to reform often creaking public pension systems has gathered momentum. In many cases, this debate has become politicized and the focus on some of the underlying economic issues has been lost. This volume hopes to redress some of this imbalance. It begins by examining the rationale behind why public pension systems were introduced originally - out of fear that individuals do not adequately save for retirement. It then systematically examines different aspects of reforming these systems. It covers the fiscal repercussions of reform, the implications of the baby boom on asset returns in the years ahead, the political economy of the reform process, and finally the risk-sharing implications that are inherent in reform. An important additional goal of this volume is to make it accessible to as wide an audience as possible: students, academics, and policy makers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that lets me know the truth behind.......1999-06-14

"I wish I'd read that earlier!" is the very first thing I want to say after I'd read through the whole book. This is an excellent book, not only because of the fact and the analyses brought out by the author, but also the way the author organizes and presents the reasons behind the odd behaviours of people of different kinds. This is not the first book I read on the topic about how to deal with people in a way to bring me success, but it IS the first book that makes me easily learn the way to see and understand people. By the materials written on this book, I was taught how to deal with people in order to make me the one who has the final control over the outcome of the event. I think it's a book that's desired to be read once, at least, even for those who think he/she can tackle the skill to deal with people very well. I truely suggest all of you to have a look.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those with a dynamic and diverse work group.......1998-10-30

This book is a great way to get a brief and tactical understanding of communication in the work place. If you have difficulty getting your point across, want to be better prepared to present ideas in a team environment or are wondering why you can't seem to convince people that your direction is the right way then this will be a good book to read. You will understand where others are coming from and what they need to hear in order to give you the information and results you need. This book, when utilised will give you the results you are looking for. Much of the information can be used not only on the job but in your personal communication as well.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book..........1997-05-19

The ultimate rewards of reading McCallister's book will probably range depending on the position one is in. Those who interact in a more executive setting will likely find the numerous scenarios and clear, straightfoward advice more poingnant and maleable. However, the personality models (which are as amusing as they are insightful) and communication techniques can be internalized by just about anyone in any number of situations (even, as McCallister points out, in ones marriage). Perhaps the biggest strength of this book is that it avoids the (very annoying) mantra that 'communication is about liking yourself and being positive'. McCallister, a professional, knows how bent and ultimately manipulative many interpersonal relationships are, and as such the advice one gets here is real and hands on practical stuff. Its only major weakness is that the personality models McCallister uses (six in all) are pretty static, despite some attempt to keep them fluid (usually via a superficial reminder that 'life is more dynamic than this'). Still, a very good book. Useful and funny. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats....

5 out of 5 stars Expert Advise that is highly readable.......2005-02-10

I couldn't disagree more with the culinary student. Having been a hospitality manager for 15+ years plus a college instructor for 6 years, I found that Miller's advise is dead-on. The cases presented are real world too. Don't be deceived by the readability of this text. It is solid as a rock. He gives practical advise that you can refer to year after year. If you want empty theory, read someone else. If you want to learn from a master, buy this book. Miller is right when he says that management is an art. Whenever you are dealing with people, you can't turn to a formula. If you want science, go study chemistry. This book is about developing practical organizational and supervisory skills. There's nothing fluffy about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening!!.......2002-10-10

You can be the most organized person in the world and you will still run into difficulties when trying to communicate in an effective manner, recruit, train, evaluate performance, discipline, and delegate all at the same time. For anyone, it's a lot to have on your plate. This book makes it seem simple. It offers way to alleviate some of the frustration that comes with the job.

4 out of 5 stars Hospitality Supervision Textbook Package.......2002-01-10

This textbook package contained "Supervision in the Hospitality Industry" 3rd Edition hard cover (ISBN# 0-471-19420-0) and National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation-NRAEF ProMGMT Student Workbook (ISBN# 0471-41305-4). Chapter 9 on performance evaluation was the greatest insight. A great learning tool to help focus my job development within the huge vacation/hospitality employer I work for here in Orlando, Florida.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-07-21

As a culinary student in a reputable institute, I was presented this book to use as a textbook for my business management course. The structure was sufficient, focusing almost exclusively on the hospitality industry, but the content was not. The majority of the book deals with self-evident truths and situations that can best be solved by common sense, but instead Miller voices his opinion that when experience fails you, revert back to the management theories, most of which he denigrates, others that he blatantly misinterprets.

Miller also pens that "management at any level in an art", a statement that many would disagree with and should give some insights as to what the 10th grade, babble-filled prose is all about. For a management book, especially one for $..., I was expecting a more technical approach to managing - theories and illustrations also combined with charts and math, two aspects that are completely vacant in the textbook.

There is a general sense of the grim reality of the hospitality industry that I was relieved to see (two stars). There's mention of the low pay, hard work, and long hours that will inevitably come with the job, and the book maintains that thought throughout. Overall however, it's too much money, and too much time, for reading what I already know.

      2 out of 5 stars A cure for sleeplessness.......2001-12-16

I know that Dr. Cullen knows what he is talking about, I know that this book is the standard to which other books on management are held, and it is almost always required reading, but this book is instant somnia. Some of the information also seems a little dated and cliche now that every manager in the country uses these techniques. Reading it in conjunction with The Chef Manager really helped me plow through.

I've met Dr. Cullen. He really has his stuff together and knows what he is talking about. Truely a wonderful text.

          Book Description

The NRAEF is introducing a new program as part of its strategic focus on recruitment and retention. This new management training certification program is based on a set of competencies defined by the restaurant, foodservice and hospitality industry as those needed for success. NRAEF ManageFirst Program leads to a new credential, ManageFirst Professional (MFP), which is part of our industry career ladder. This competency-based program includes 12 topics, each with a competency guide, exam, instructor resources and certificate. Students earn a certificate for each exam passed. The topics and exams are aligned to typical on-campus courses. For example, the Controlling Foodservice Costs Competency Guide is designed to align with a Cost Control or Operations Management course. Competency Guides and Textbooks: Most guides are 150-200 pages in length and are designed to be used with traditional textbooks for each course area. Each guide contains the essential content for that topic, learning activities, assessments, case studies, suggested field trips & research projects, professional profiles and testimonials. Instructor resources are available electronically and include competency guide content, notes indicating points to be emphasized, recommended activities and discussion questions, and answers to all activities and case studies. Exams: Exams accompany each topic covered in the competency guides. Pencil and paper and online exam formats are offered. They typically are proctored on campus at the end of a course by faculty. Certificates: The NRAEF provides a certificate to students upon successfully passing each exam. The certificates are endorsed by the NRAEF and feature the student’s name and the exam passed. The certificates are a lasting recognition of a student’s accomplishment and a signal to the industry that the student has mastered the competencies covered within a particular topic. Credential: Upon successful completion of five NRAEF ManageFirst Program exams (including three predefined core topics, one foundation topic, and ServSafe Food Safety) a student is awarded the NRAEF ManageFirst Professional (MFP) credential. There is no additional charge for the credential. The program is targeted at the academic community. The program is flexible for use at two-year or four-year restaurant, foodservice and hospitality programs, proprietary schools and technical/vocational career education schools.

          Book Description

A practical resource for managers and supervisors in hospitality businesses

In many hospitality establishments, one manager or supervisor is the entire human resources department, making all the hiring and training decisions, often without having a formal human resources background. Filling this knowledge gap, Hospitality Employee Management and Supervision provides both busy professionals and students with a one-stop comprehensive guide to human resources in the hospitality industry.

Rather than taking a theoretical approach, this text provides a hands-on, practical, and applications-based approach. The coverage is divided into four sections: legal considerations, employee selection, employee orientation and training, and communication and motivation.

Each chapter in this lively and engaging text features:

Loved the book. As a professional in human capital management I found it to be well laid out, full of information that could be applied to every day situations. Not the academic theory that sometimes isn't realistic.

As a restaurant manager who's new to the industry, I found this book very helpful in sorting out all the important elements of hiring and training employees. Easy to read and to follow, and it seems to be very up-to-date with new laws and modern advice for motivating and leading employees. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in managing employees is a restaurant setting.

                  5 out of 5 stars Insightful information about a little-known business.......2007-03-04

I enjoyed reading this refreshing text and found it to be replete with pertinent information about creating, running, and maintaining an errand service business. The author provides helpful insights gleaned from his experiences in and knowledge of the business and writes in a straightforward, no-nonsense, and practical style. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering venturing into the errand service business.

5 out of 5 stars Glad we decided to purchase!.......2005-04-02

Can't say I agree with some of the latter reviews. Glad we decided to purchase, as the book has helped us a great deal. Especially the portion that goes into suggested errand niches. Well done, Mr. Spina. I'm not concerned that it's spiral-bound, nor did I observe grammatical errors. Plus, I'd rather have a lesser page count of clear, concise information than a higher page count of drivel. Sure, I've seen some of this information elsewhere, but so what. What how-to book can't you say that about? I like the information presented and its personal, one-on-one style. My sister and I run our Errand business part-time and the information we found here was good enough for us. In fact, the ideas the book gives regarding where and how to find business have pushed us over the top.

                  Thank you,
                  Courtney Armstrong

                  2 out of 5 stars Plastic Comb?.......2005-02-23

I received this "book" -- wait, no, it's a BOOKLET -- and I was shocked. I couldn't believe I paid $25 for a comb bound booklet. It's not even printed double sided. Furthermore, I'm not impressed with the content. The information is readily available in other books such as Entrepreneur Magazine's How to Start a Personal Concierge Service or The Concierge Manual, Second Edition. This booklet should have been a download rather than a shipped "book". It's certainly not worth $25. I'm sure there was something in the description about comb binding, but I missed it (perhaps I expected different from Amazon). I was a little more than disappointed.

                  1 out of 5 stars Deplorable.......2005-01-08

This is, without a doubt, the worst investment I have made so far. The grammar and punctuation is deplorable, and the information is next to useless. There are infinitely better sources for anyone looking for information on how to start a small business. I would have given it a rating of less than one star had one been available. Save your time and money.
