David Ricardo: Notes on Malthus's 'Measure of Value'
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521402980 |
Book Description
This book is a companion volume to the Royal Economic Soviety edition of The Works and Correspondence of David Ricardo, edited by Piero Sraffa with the collaboration of Maurice Dobb. It completes the record on Ricardian value theory by showing Ricardo’s reaction to Malthus’s pamphlet The Measure of Value Stated and Illustrated of 1823. Ricardo’s Notes are, in Sraffa’s words, ‘the only vonsiderable item’ not appearing in the Royal Economic Society edition of his works. In addition, the recent publication by Cambridge of the variorum edition of Malthus’s Principles of Political Economy, edited by J. M. Pullen, makes it possible to understand Malthus’s pamphlet as an intermediate step between the 1820 and 1836 editions of the Principles. In his introduction Pier Luigi Porta highlights the place of these Notes in the development of Ricardo’s thinking. When taken with Ricardo’s paper on ‘Absolute Value and Exchangeable Value’, these Notes provide the essentials of Ricardian value theory.

The Economics of Thomas Robert Malthus (Studies in Classical Political Economy)
Samuel Hollander Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0802007902 |
Book Description
Samuel Hollander provides the first in-depth study of Malthus's achievement as an economist. Malthus's message has been largely misrepresented by decades of careless and biased interpretation. In this volume, Samuel Hollander re-examines these interpretations and presents a full and coherent picture of Malthus's economics. He evaluates John Maynard Keynes's famous dichotomy between the Ricardian and Malthusian methods, proving that the two were far closer to each other than is generally supposed. The relation of Malthus's ideas to those of his predecessors is thoroughly examined, for example, his roots in the Wealth of Nations are demonstrated and the physiocratic and Sraffian dimensions of his work are brought to light. Hollander extends his analysis to biographical factors; he discounts the textbook perspective on Malthus as a social-welfare pessimist and dispels the common notion of Malthus as spokesman of the land-owning classes. The standard charges against Malthus of inconsistency and intellectual dishonesty are also challenged.
Samuel Hollander has produced the definitive study of Thomas Robert Malthus. A major contribution to the history of economic theory, the study has much broader appeal as a portrait of a central figure in early nineteenth-century debates over social policy -particularly those having to do with the role of government in relation to social welfare, economic growth, and trade protection.

Letters of David Ricardo to Thomas Robert Malthus, 1810-1823
David Ricardo , T. R. Malthus , and James Bonar Manufacturer: Martino ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1578984858 |
Book Description
REPRINT 2007. Hardbound. Octavo. xxiv, 251. Oxford, Clarendon Press: 1887. The letters in this collection were written between 1810 and 1823, the last ones dating only a few days before Ricardo's death. The letters are mostly devoted to discussing the many questions in political economy on which the two authors disagreed. Malthus' letters to Ricardo are lost, so we have only Ricardo's response to Malthus. The two men were personal friends, and were often in each other's company, but on economic themes they differed widely. The book is well edited and it contains much information, both in the text and in the notes, about Ricardo and Malthus themselves, and also about other political economists of the period.

An important rethinking of Malthus.......2004-02-14
The Malthus Factor is packed with detailed examples of how wide-ranging Malthus' impact on society has been, from discussions of the connections between the Green Revolution's fertilizer requirements and linkages between munitions industries and fertilizer industries, to links between the rise of the American Eugenics movement and the historical demise of American midwifery, to the roles of the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations in funding the Eugenics movement. Even readers who disagrees with Ross' theoretical approach to Malthus will learn something of value from his analysis. I expect that this book will soon become required reading for any graduate student studying for exams covering both demographic theory and political economy.

Dale Carnegie, step aside--this sharply designed, itty-bitty handbook aims to give you, in 72 pages, all the key strategies you need to get along with and manage people in the workplace... and sometimes even succeeds! Here, with the help of lots of snappy sidebars, graphics, checklists, and charts, you'll learn how to develop basic people skills like understanding human behavior, building people's confidence, and gaining their trust; develop the people you manage in the workplace by providing training, improving their skills, nurturing talent, motivating progress, and teaching by example; find solutions to thorny "people problems" like how to build positive work environments, open closed minds, handle conflict, and deal with "difficult types"; and assess your people's performances and reward them accordingly. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine. It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so damned cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy
