    Book Description

The Central Asian republics – Kazakhstan, the Krygyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan – are transitioning from centrally planned economies to market-oriented systems. This volume addresses the process and policy reforms these countries face and how the reforms may impact agricultural development in a region that has experienced varying degrees of economic growth over the fifteen years since independence. It offers expert policy research and analysis and provides research-based information for generating policy recommendations that are relevant to each country as well as similar evidence from other transitional economies, including China, Vietnam, and selected Eastern European countries. Suresh Chandra Babu is a Senior Research Fellow and Program Leader at the International Food Research Policy Institute (IFRPI), in Washington, D.C. where he coordinates its research and outreach programs in Central Asia. He has trained more than 1,000 policy analysts and has consulted with international organizations such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and UNICEF. Dr. Babu received his Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University in the United States. Sandjar Djalalov is a principal researcher at the Center for Efficient Economic Policy in Uzbekistan where he conducts research on production, marketing, investment, and consumption behavior of different types of farms in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. He is also a senior lecturer in the Tashkent Institute of Engineering for Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization. Dr. Djalalov received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Macroeconomics and Social Investigation in Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

Crystal Reports 7: The Complete Reference is the best Crystal Reports book around for users who have progressed beyond the "baffled novice" level. Even for newcomers to Crystal Reports who are willing to experiment a bit, this book will prove satisfactory. It's worth the cover price. Particularly praiseworthy are the sections on programming with formulas, in which the author explains details of the Crystal Reports formula language (such as variable scope, time functions, and sorting) that other books don't cover adequately.

This book also goes into detail on doing analysis with cross-tabs, performing geographic analyses, getting user input with parameter fields, and importing data from online analytical processing (OLAP) cubes. Though it lacks much of a tutorial on Structured Query Language (SQL), coverage extends beyond Crystal Reports Designer to include Seagate Analysis and Crystal SQL Designer.

Peck deftly balances how-to information (in the form of step-by-step procedures) with documentation (lists that explain what options do and what interface elements are for). Often, the author labels interface elements in screen shots, making it absolutely clear what they mean and do. He's also absolutely comprehensive in his survey of the Crystal Reports suite, adding coverage of the Report Designer Component, the Crystal ActiveX Control, the Report Engine Automation Server and its Report Engine API. The advanced coverage is geared toward the Visual Basic developer integrating Crystal Reports resources into a larger system. --David Wall

Topics covered: Formula construction, layout control, charts, subreports, drill-down reports, user interaction, extracting data from SQL databases, OLAP cubes, Seagate Analysis, and Visual Basic integration tools.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a zero to hero Attack on Crystal Reports.......2000-07-01

This book is great if you want to skip the re-written user manual that Prima offers and all the other 21day dummy books. It goes through features completely in an easy to understand manner. Great book, every Crystal Report using Developer should have this book in his Library.

4 out of 5 stars A must read if you are interested in Crystal Reports.......2000-05-29

The book covers all aspects of Crystal Reports. From creating a basic report to more advanced reports. It does not cover Crystal Reports formulas thoroughly, so if you want to learn more about creating formulas you may want to get another book in addition to this one. However, you do get fully functional software on the CD ROM that will get you creating professional quality reports in no time at all. This book is definitely a must read for anyone wanting to learn Crystal Reports.

5 out of 5 stars A Reference for All Levels.......2000-03-10

I bought this book a month after buying Crystal Reports (early 1999). I have used it constantly ever since and it has been my primary resource when I use the software on various consulting jobs. The book starts from the beginning and through a series of well defined chapters takes the reader up to an intermediate/expert stage. I taught myself the ActiveX (Visual Basic) module using the book as my primary reference. If you want a real "Bible" on the subject then it must be in your toolkit.

1 out of 5 stars A New Definition of "Complete".......2000-03-03

I was expecting more information out of a "complete" guide. A more accurate title would be "The Developer's Guide To Crystal Reports". Aside from the developer's info tacked on to the end, there is little new information in this book. For the Crystal Reports user, any of the introductory books out will serve as well. In fact, the "Dummies" book actually goes into more depth, for example, about formulas.

For advanced users looking for answers to tough questions, don't bother looking here.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on subject.......2000-02-25

I work with Visual Basic 6 and Crystal Reports for a Fortune 50 company library IT group. The author has answered all the questions I have had with Crystal Reports, Seagate Analysis, and the RDC for VB app integration. His examples are "real-life." I strongly recommend.

      Book Description

This book has been a job-training leader and valuable professional reference in rooms management for over two decades. It provides exceptionally complete coverage of the hotel's front office and all of the support positions that make it work—from the international reservation network, to legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, management issues, room rate formulas, control and oversight, etc. In a sequence that follows the flow of most guests—reservation, arrival, billing, departure, auditing and accounting—the book treats both the how-to (e.g., completing a reg card) and the wherefore (e.g., yield management) while keeping readers abreast of the trends currently affecting the industry. For hotel/resort managers and front-office support staff.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars a very good book.......2006-02-07

I bought this book to understand better the modern age in the hotel industry. I run a small hotel in Greece with my family and now we are building a new more up to date one. This book helped me to understand the hotel industry as a whole and the way it is changing. It covers with detail many issues, from GDS to bed making. There are hundrends of examples that make it easy to understand what is being discused. It is abstract at the beginning of every chapter and becomes more practical (how to do things) further on.
Although the books draws most cases and examples from big properties, I found it very helpful and discovered many ways to improve the service we offer in our small hotel.

It is one of the books that I will keep for reference and the best I have read so far, among those that try to cover almost every aspect of running a hotel. I can not think of someone in the hotel bussines who would not find this book intresting and worth reading.

        2 out of 5 stars Not a good text.......2002-06-30

This book is not worth purchasing if you have any knowledge whatsoever of the hotel industry. It attempts to cover too many topics in too little space and fails to penetrate the surface of any given issue. I think that it is probably too much to ask that an in depth analysis of an industry as diverse and complex as the hotel industry be compiled into a single volume.

From the supplier: The 1970's saw the increasing use of management contracts and franchising agreements within hotel companies. Hilton International Co were the first to develop management contracts with profit-sharing lease agreements while Holiday Inns introduced the franchising agreements. Both revolutionized hotel management and afforded the owners the full responsibility for operating losses and debt service while the company operators will be fully responsible for the hotel operations.

Creativity played a key role in the hotel's compliance decisions, as exemplified by the use of bright colors which are both decorative and functional in aiding visually impaired guests to identify doorways and walls. Other initiatives include gradually inclined ramps and the use of lighted strips, specialized elevators and frame-style beds. Hotel staff also underwent awareness training geared toward extending quality service to handicapped guests.

2 out of 5 stars This is a sales pamphlet disguised as a book.......2004-03-23

I received this book today and I'm just sick to my stomach that I paid so much for a sales gimmic. Each chapter describes in detail why you need to buy thier franchise and patterns to have a sewing business. You won't be able to take this book and start teaching students. There's not even information about their pricing or franchise fees. I feel like I was ripped off. To top it off the book is cheaply bound in a spiral and printed on the front of a page and the back is blank. So the number of pages is deceptive. Don't waste your money on this one, keep looking.
