4 out of 5 stars Best Value for Global Figures.......2001-09-10

This is the best value for having global figures handy, and is one tenth the cost of the other great reference work, the Fitzroy Dearborn Book of World Rankings. Perhaps even more to the point, this book has something the other one does not: country by country data (although one could always go to the CIA World Factbook online for similar data as well as biographic listings). Having said that, it does not have the full range of detail that is offered by the other, such as domestic water shortages and energy consumption. This book has Internet and music charts--but none of the charts are comprehensive, generally listing top and bottom countries, not all countries. Bottom line: this is the best value for a portable book about global figures relevant to political economy.

5 out of 5 stars A goldmine of usable and quotable information.......1999-01-12

An outstanding annual publication. I use this more frequently than any other book. For anyone engaged in work, trade, research or policy at other than the purely local level this is a goldmine of useful and quotable information.

5 out of 5 stars The best, in brief..........2004-06-17

On a regular basis, the Economist, one of the most respected news periodicals in the world, publishes this handy guide of facts and figures. This covers many of the 'vital statistics' of nations, multinational and non-governmental international organisations, and key political and economic topics worldwide, all compiled by the world-class Economist Intelligence Unit, who regularly publish reports for government and business leaders all over the world.

The first section of the book is on World Rankings. This covers important areas in geography, population, urban density, economics and living standards, financial and monetary issues, agriculture, business, transport, education levels, health and over social topics. You can find out here which country has the largest percentage of farmers (it isn't Hong Kong or Singapore), which country has the largest outstanding debt (think big -- big countries have big debts), and even which countries have the highest percentages of beer and wine drinkers, smokers, and music lovers (so you'll know where to party).

The second section of the book has an alphabetical listing of the countries of the world, with all of their vital stats spread across two pages -- demographics, economic stats, financial and trade data, exchange rates (generally), capital, geographic data, and more. The really suprising thing in this listing is that nowhere does it give the principle language of the country -- given the comprehensive nature of the data, one would think that a line or two regarding languages spoken would be a natural piece of data to include.

Also, this is not a complete listing of nations -- this includes only major nations, with a Eurocentric tilt. None of the Central American countries are included; there is a definite lack in Caribbean, African, and Asian countries also. However, to include all the nations would make this a jumbo-sized book, not a pocket guide. As it is, they have been selective, and while one might quibble with some of their choices, it is still a very handy and authoritative guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best single source for global statistical data.......2002-01-19

Few statistical compilations are as consistently useful and interesting as The Economist Pocket World in Figures. I have bought each annual edition since the early 1990s and count it as the single most useful reference source available to managers. The Pocket World is produced by the same group that publishes the weekly Economist magazine and expensive but invaluable country reports from the Economist Intelligence Unit. That lineage guarantees (as much as anything could) the timeliness and accuracy of data. The first part of the Pocket World lists 'world rankings' for over 170 countries using around 200 different measures. These include all the standard economic, population and financial measures as well as interesting comparisons on trade, quality of life measures, creativity and research indices and consumption data. A little cross-referencing produces useful and original information. Match (for example) per-capita book purchases (page 88) against computer ownership levels (page 86) and you can produce a linear regression that should be music to Amazon's heart!

The second part of the book has country profiles providing a two-page statistical breakdown for each of the world's 60 major economies. Spending some time comparing and contrasting the data gives the reader a greater depth of understanding about the factors that set nation's destinies. The sections on age distribution and birth rates, for example, clearly show the different national challenges raised for Japan (with the world's highest median age) and for many troubled African states where close to half the population is under fifteen.

For anyone interested in world affairs this is an essential book. It is an endlessly fascinating source of data and a reliable base from which to build an understanding of economic and demographic trends.

2 out of 5 stars Way too much needless information.......2005-03-06

I agree with one reviewer, in the fact that this book is just WAY too full of useless information. 80% of this book is filler. I couldn't even weed through all of the needless information in order for this book to make an impact on me. I was reading, and kept drifting off, because I simply didn't care about most of what he was saying. I wanted to become a 'Great Communicator'. Instead, I found my patience was being tested! I don't recommend this book for anyone who doesn't want to know every little nit picking detail about certain things like the origins of language, and certain common sense things, which he explains in FULL detail.

                  No need for this book.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing Much .......2005-02-11

That's what it is...It's a book that takes a few key concepts and embellished it to reasonable thickness so as to hit the stores looking good. I finished it in 1 1/2 days - skipping many mundane references. In my opinion, the book is probably worth less than 20 pages of useful material.

5 out of 5 stars Learn From the Master!.......2003-06-21

If you need to be a great communicator to succeed in your profession (that includes everybody!), read this book. Learn from the master-communicator himself, Nido Qubein!

                  Dr. Michael Beitler
                  Author of "Strategic Organizational Change"

3 out of 5 stars Want to be Spoon Feed? This Is YOUR BOOK!.......2001-01-15

The book is constantly on the edge of being all fluff. It lacks depth. This book takes the few important things Qubein chooses to share and ever so gently goes over the details. The author talks directly and softly without being chatty. This would be a very good book for a very young reader that wants to learn about public speaking. For adults, looking for a book to practice speed reading and skimming, the book is a truly outstanding. While it is well written and well organized, there is hardly ever a challenging thought. You should be able to read this book at the speed of light. Speed reading and skimming are valuable skills. Personally, I like books that have content density but are well written. Reading this book slowly would be a waste of time. Nearly all books that are made easy to read had an author that is careful not to say to much. This is one of those books manufactured for money. There was no passion to write it. See some of my two dozen reviews on public speaking for a better selection. How did all the excitement and pretense about Nido Qubein develop, certainly not this book. I am anxious to see him speak. I would like to see what makes him famous.

My biggest new lesson from this book was as follows. So many authors on public speaking try to tell us an audience has one mind or a personality, Qubein says: Everybody in the audience is different, an individual. Audience evaluation is not dividing people into bunches.

No offense intended but Qubein expresses a lot of opinions about the business world that are more pie in the sky than based on experience. American business is not well managed, it is just a whale of a lot better than other businesses around the globe. The media and Qubein want to make chief executive officers out to be Stars. Most CEOs bring a lot of limiting baggage to the job. Qubein is on the right track as to were management style should be headed. Corporate loyalty has been destroyed by shortsighted CEOs and boards of directors. It is going to take a lot more cash in the monthly pay check to hold a good middle management together in the future. Start ups and self employment are sucking the best out of big corporations, because the insensitive Huns are still in control. My opinions are based upon interviewing and tracking top management of hundreds of companies over decades for leading investment firms.

5 out of 5 stars I learned so much from this one book!.......1998-08-22

This book talks about the importance of communication skills. It is full of helpful ideas that will help you and your business. We often don't realize that we spend the majority of our day communicating -- many of us need to improve this skill. This book teaches the importance of simple language while also guiding our words into the next century with the importance of recognizing "politically correct" terminology. This book will help you to communicate more effectively in today's marketplace. It is a fabulous and informative book!
