    Book Description

The rational expectations revolution and other developments in economics (notably game theory) have fundamentally altered the application of optimal control theory to economic forecasting and planning. In particular, they have shown that economic systems cannot be modeled simplistically on physical systems. However, as the authors show, these developments have greatly enhanced our understanding of how an economy functions, and now make it possible for optimal control theory to be applied much more effectively to economic modeling and planning.

        Book Description

This book studies the so far unexplored operation of the international monetary system that prevailed before the emergence of the international gold standard in 1873. Conventional wisdom has it that the emergence of gold as a global anchor was both an inescapable and desirable evolution, given the exchange rate stability it provided and Britain's economic predominance. This study draws on a wealth of archival sources and abundant new statistical evidence (fully detailed in the appendix) to demonstrate that global exchange rate stability always prevailed before the making of the gold standard. This was despite the heterogeneity among national monetary regimes, based on gold, silver, or both. The reason for the stability before the establishment of the gold standard is France's bimetallic system. France, by being in a position to trade gold for silver, and vice versa, effectively pegged the exchange rate between gold and silver at its legal ratio of 15.5. Part I of the book studies exactly how this mechanism worked. Part II focuses on the respective behaviour of private concerns and arbitrageurs on the one hand, and authorities such as the Bank of France on the other hand, in order to underline the constraints and opportunities that were associated with bimetallism as an international regime. Finally, Part III provides a new view on the collapse of bimetallism and its replacement by a gold standard. It is argued that bimetallism might well have survived, and that the emergence of the gold standard was by no means inescapable. Rather, it resulted from a massive coordination failure at both national and international levels - a failure that was a preview of the interwar collapse of the gold standard.

            Book Description

The word bimetallism means something concerning two metals, in conjunction or in some mutual relation to each other. In addition to this, it has come to be understood that the two metals are gold and silver; and that this conjunction, or mutual relation, is in, or through, their use as money. Beyond this, bimetallism may mean more or may mean less. In ordinary speech, if without qualification or previous explanation, it means either the system of national bimetallism, with free coinage of both metals at the legal ratio, such as existed in the United States from 1792 to 1873, in France after 1785, and in many other countries at various times; or else, and this more properly, the system of international bimetallism - again with free coinage of the metals, at a ratio common to the contracting nations - such as existed under the Latin Union between 1865 and 1873; such as has been proposed to be constituted between wider groups of nations, in successive international conferences and in a host of treatises, tracts, and public addresses.

Francis A. Walker, Ph.D., LL.D., at the time of the original publication, was President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the author of “Political Economy,” “Money,” “The Wages Question,” “Money, Trade, and Industry,” and “International Bimetallism.”

                        Book Description

The rapid evolution of e-commerce on the Internet has outpaced our laws to regulate it.

Internet sites are setting up off-shore, out of the jurisdiction of the laws of civilized countries. Legitimate stocks are manipulated by e-traders, and Dotcom stocks with questionable business plans are fetching billions from eager investors. Illegitimate one-man shops are masquerading as established businesses, taking your credit card, and then disappearing into cyberspace with little or no chance of apprehension, while legitimate auction sites are being used by criminals to sell counterfeit and illegal property.

Violation of your privacy has become the norm while doing business on the Internet, and Identity Theft happens so much that it is now a crime. Your credit card number and your social security number are being passed around like cookies, while monolithic data engines scan websites, chatrooms, bulletin boards and e-mail for your private financial data, choices, thoughts, and opinions – selling it to anyone who wants it.

The Internet is a great place to visit. It’s educational, economical, ecumenical, and fun – but you’re on your own when you go.. There are few laws to protect you from con games, scams, and deceit. This book will help keep you safe.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, easy-to-read, informative and reliable.......2001-06-08

Dotcons: Con Games, Fraud, And Deceit On The Internet is a comprehensive, easy-to-read, informative and reliable instructional guide to protecting our selves, our families, and our business dealings from Internet frauds and scams. The rapid growth and development of e-commerce on the Internet is notorious for outstripping the abilities of local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts to deal with it. From stock manipulation by e-traders, to illegitimate entrepreneurs masquerading as established business, to auction site defraudings ranging from selling counterfeits and stolen properties to simply taking the money from a bidder and failing to provide the item offered, Internet based criminal activities are rampant, diverse, and widespread. If you seek to do any kind of personal or professional business on the Internet, you need to give James Thomes' Dotcons a serious and thorough reading!

5 out of 5 stars amazing info...required reading for anyone on the net!.......2001-01-31

I would have to agree with the TX review completely. I found this book to be extremely helpful before continuing to venture into other avenues relating to my online business. In addition, this book should definitely become a required reading for anyone on the net! In it's totality, I found this compiled source of information "hard to put down" as I finished the book in one hour. Are there additional volumes or books by James?

5 out of 5 stars Ounce of Prevention.......2001-01-24

I agree with other reviewers that Dotcons should be required reading for everyone using the Internet. A play on words describing how the new 'dot-com' technology has been co-opted by modern day con-artists, the book is a well-organized survey of the confidence games, fraud and deceit that exist on the Internet. It explains what the threats are, how Dotcon artists deceive you, how to recognize them, and what you can do to protect yourself.

For an engineer, Jim Thomes, writes with the imagination and flare of a novelist. It is clear that he views the dot-com explosion of the last few years with some degree of caution when he argues that the rapid evolution of e-commerce on the Internet has outpaced our laws to regulate it!

He claims the fast pace and anonymity of business transactions on the Internet have produced new opportunities for fraud as well as modern versions of old-fashioned confidence games that are appearing every day. Quoting Federal Trade Commission reports of over 500 complaints a day, Dotcons describes how both individuals and businesses are being routinely swindled out of millions of dollars by illegitimate businesses setting up off offshore out of the jurisdiction of the laws of civilized countries, brash young hackers manipulating your portfolio for fun and profit, technology-savvy entrepreneurs with questionable business plans raising billions in capital, and one-man shops masquerading as established businesses, taking your credit card, and then disappearing into cyberspace with little or no chance of apprehension.

Dotcons not only warns about these frauds, but also explains how to recognize and deal with them -- Advance Fees, Business Ventures, Investments, On-line Auctions, E-Shopping, Travel Packages, Rebates, University Degrees, Counterfeit Identification, Fenced Goods, Sweepstakes, Contests, Gambling, Prescription Drugs and dozens more 'opportunities' that you will find on the Internet.

Dotcons also addresses the privacy issues associated with using your credit card and personal identification on the Internet. Thomes coins the term 'Mass Privacide' when he asserts that violation of our privacy has become the norm while doing business on the Internet. He shows in detail how data mining scan websites, chatrooms, bulletin boards and e-mail for private financial data that is used to 'profile' you for manipulation by the media.

The format of Dotcons is friendly: it has short, easy to understand examples of scams and simple directions to deal with them. But the message of Dotcons is strong -- a very serious attempt to solve a problem faced by millions of people all over the world who are being confronted every day with new and different electronic schemes to cheat them. Dotcons is an ounce of prevention that's probably worth a pound of cure for your pocketbook and privacy. I liked it, and it sure changed my habits on the Internet.

After reviewing this book I'm a little wary to enter any information even in this column. I have been wondering if there are other books available that mr.thomes has written. Even though the book was rather short in length, the information I felt, was true well knowing the background of mr. thomes's life.

If you've just been bitten with the idea of starting a B & B as I have, this is a good book to start with. Lot's of info, with just enough detail to keep it from being a text book. I'm looking ahead to about 10 years before I go this route in my retirement, and this is a book I will always keep handy. It answered questions I didn't even know I had at this stage and kept my feet on the ground without bursting my bubble as some other books did.

                        4 out of 5 stars Well-Written, Easy Read.......2004-08-18

This book is a good introduction to the Bed & Breakfast business; I'm glad I read it first. It contains useful information and the tone is pleasant and light. But it is just a little dated (almost 10 years old), and you need to read several more books to get all the information you need (such as The Complete Idiot's Guide. . .)

                        3 out of 5 stars Folksy, Practical . . . Very Sweet.......2004-05-02

The tone of this book is as lovely as I'm sure the author/innkeeper is. She's experienced at her business and her craft of teaching the art of owning a Bed and Breakfast.

This is one of many books you should purchase/read if you are interested in this field. Look for others (So, You Want to Be An Innkeeper, for example) for more hard-core business advice.

4 out of 5 stars The nitty gritty of running the shop........2000-06-18

This book goes room by room into decorating, supplies needed, rules, safety, and the likes which really helps when you are running a B&B. IT failed to really go into depth about the business aspects which I thought was a shame. This book is great if you are already running a B&B or want to decorate your house like one, but I would suggest buying several other B&B books to help give the complete picture. It also include recipies which was an added bonus. A good book for the right need.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the title says.......2006-02-19

This book is exactly what I was hoping for. I have been working through Romanus Wolter's _Kick Start Your Dream Business_ with great success, but I needed some specific information about being an entrepreneur in Canada. This book is a great source for addresses and links for Canadian government offices and other Canadian resources. It also mentions other things unique to Canada that I found helpful like "Excise Tax", which will effect my particular business. The book also has good general information on starting and running a business. My only complaint about the book is that my husband noticed a few typos.
