            Book Description

With the enlargement of the EU in May 2004, the possible enlargement of the Economic and Monetary Union also became an imminent issue: It can be expected that the 12 countries that have introduced the Euro so far will be joined by several others by the end of the decade. In this book, a set of internationally renowned economists from both sides of the Atlantic analyse the challenges that lie in front of the EU as it used to be, the hurdles that have to be cleared by possible candidates, and the impact of these developments on important economic sectors like the financial markets, etc. The scientists are supported by Central Bankers from current and future Euro-zone members who give their views on the problems and chances of Euro-accession. The book is thus providing an overall view of the major developments regarding the Euro in the years to come.

This volume reviews the experience of 25 non-Asian transition economies ten years into their transformation to market economies. The volume is based on an IMF conference held in February 1999 in Washington, DC to take stock of the achievements and challenges of transition in the context of three questions: How far has transition progressed in each country? What factors explain the differences in the progress made? And what remains to be done?

From the supplier: The IMF held a conference titled 'A Decade of Transition: Achievements and Challenges' in Feb 1999 to take stock of the accomplishments of the transition economies of Eastern and Central Europe, the Balkan Peninsula and the former Soviet Union over the past 10 years. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the former centrally planned economies of the region have made major strides in moving toward market-based economies. The IMF and the World Bank have played a major role in controlling the price and output instability experienced in the early years and maintaining the momentum for structural reforms. Still, there are considerable challenges ahead for these transition economies. These include transforming the role of government, implementing banking reform, addressing sharp income inequalities, bringing business enterprises to the market economy and strengthening the macroeconomic situation.

From the supplier: The factors that have inhibited or facilitated the economic growth of the transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkan Peninsula and the former Soviet Union were examined. Although no one pattern was found to characterize the growth experience of these economies, several conditions appeared to impact economic expansion. These include a country's ability to control expansion, the degree of reform or market liberalization, the share of the private sector in GDP, the level of foreign direct investment and the level of success in implementing IMF programs. The experiences of the transition economies offer lessons for other countries seeking to achieve consistent and sustainable growth. These lessons are discussed.

                      Book Description

Japanese foreign direct investment surged into Western markets in the late 1980s provoking intense policy debates in Europe and America. How did the European authorities respond to this 'Japanese Challenge'? How did their response compare to the US policy record? Does this international business activity give any insights into the idea of increasing convergence of behaviour of the world's capitalist economies? To answer these questions, Mark Mason investigates European policies towards the Japanese Challenge in cross-national and historical perspectives. He compares the policy response of European governments with that of the US government by contrasting case studies in three key sectorsthe automobile industry, consumer electronics, and banking. The case studies are then examined in the context of wider policy patterns and models across the entire Triad throughout the postwar period. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in international business history, Japanese investment policies, international trade, corporate strategy, and government-industry relations.

5 out of 5 stars small business marketing cookbook.......2001-11-25

As the title suggests, this book is a how-to guide for marketing and promoting your business. It contains hundreds of scripts, ready made examples, and can help with dealing with customers on all levels.

More than half the book is focused on written communications. It contains suggestions as well as ready-made examples-- from cold sales letters to the touchy subject of dealing with customer credit issues.

The remainder of the book deals with communicating with customers over the phone, print advertisements, creating press kits, TV and radio. It even has scripts for effectively handling irate customers.

I would especially recommend this book for small business owners.

                              4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......1997-11-01

These types of books tend to be stilted, but not this one. The examples are written in a contemporary style and provide a good basis to jump start your thinking. In an attempt to be all things, the author includes chapters on Radio/Television. These chapters can't possibly do justice to the subjects.

From the supplier: Hardware retailing managers spend only about 16% in performing merchandising tasks like putting up displays, advertising and formulating promotions. Effective managers should focus on the way their stores prepare for sales and promotions. Managers should plan for their store's sales promotion in advance to make allowances for problems and delays. They should keep close watch for special buys at their wholesaler's buying market. Signage should be attractive and unique to create an impact.
