2 out of 5 stars Too many editions, too expensive.......2007-09-17

We've used this book for three years to teach college business communications, but it may be time to hunt another book. The book is too expensive at $100. Also, the publisher has issued three new editions in the past three years. That makes it impossible for students to re-sale used books and is frustrating to students and instructors. If the book were a better value, we probably would continue to use it; as it is, we can find something cheaper for our students.

2 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE THIS TEXT.......2007-08-14

I used both the previous edition and current edition of this text to teach college students. Both editions were full of errors and contradictory statements. In particular, you cannot rely on the instructor materials- there are many test questions that have answers that are contradicted in the text. Also, the grammar exercises are too difficult for an introductory text- they test students on advanced grammar concepts that are not even covered by the book! There is a grammar reference section at the end of the text but it does not cover the majority of concepts tested in the end-of-chapter grammar exercises. So, my students were continually frustrated. Many of the examples in the book are also very strange- for example, instead of PowerPoint, they speak of "computer generated slides".

5 out of 5 stars This text is highly effective for teaching communications!.......1999-07-01

Pensacola Junior College has used Effective Communication for Colleges in our Business Communications class for several years. This textbook includes just exactly what we need to enable our students to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The emphasis on grammar review is highly relevant and well constructed. The examples shown are timely and appealing to our students. Supplementary materials are helpful and easy to access. Keep up the good work!

          Product Description

Conflict can appear with varying degrees of intensity or hostility, but if it is not managed effectively, it can slow or jeopardize an institution s success. Chairs and deans compromise their leadership success unless they are able to effectively manage a variety of conflict-laden situations and difficult personalities. This book provides insight into managing challenging processes and offers guidance for dealing with such notable and stress-producing personalities as the pot stirrer, the prima donna/drama queen, the confrontation junkie and the passive, indifferent soul.

Each chapter contains a series of questions and prompts to guide chairs and deans through a hypothetical but realistic situation, and encourages them to cultivate and practice the first-person participant and third-person observer roles. By moving between these two perspectives, chairs and deans will gain more insight into their own style of managing conflict and understanding of leadership. This skill also permits chairs and deans to have more strategic control over the communication in a particular situation, thus empowering them to feel and be more in control in every situation.

From the supplier: Indiana University launches a model program that effects the continuing education of teachers in remote rural schools by means of an inexpensive audiographic system. The programs are designed to provide training for teachers of troubled or disabled students, and are also intended to provide a forum for enhancing communication between teachers in distance learning situations and their peers. Audiographics is a type of teleconferencing that enables textual and graphical information to be transmitted between computers utilizing standard network software and ordinary telephone service. This makes it about one-tenth as expensive as video links established through satellite networks. The Indiana system utilizes AppleTalk Remote Access, Timbuktu, ScanWare and MacMICA to link the participants and establish an inexpensive and effective 'electronic chalkboard' system.

                    Book Description

Committees. Seemingly endless, boring discussions going nowhere. No university survives without them, and no faculty member can avoid them. Why are there such a plethora of committees in the university? What functions do they serve? And how can you, as a committee member or chair, ensure that the work gets done quickly and effectively with a minimum of conflict, boredom, or wasted time? Author Neil J. Smelser has incorporated decades of experience on a myriad of committees from the local level up to national policy advisory groups into this book. He skillfully demystifies committees and explains how to get on certain committees and avoid others, how to get the committee work done as efficiently as possible, how to ensure that your views are properly represented in the committee's report, how chairing a committee can help shape its mission and direct its outcome, and how to use committees as a positive factor for your academic career. Smelser's advice will be useful to anyone working in the university setting.

All that's missing is the smell of the burgers and sound of Bruce Springsteen pouring from the jukebox. This book seems to offer everything anyone would want to know about that great institution, the roadside diner. Peter Genovese, a writer for a New Jersey newspaper, concentrates on diners in his home state. The many illustrations--photos of diners, patrons, and all sorts of diner memorabilia--reflect the loving attitude and sense of humor that pervade this book.

                        Book Description

There is nothing more "Jersey" than a diner. Adorning the highways and byways of fully half of the state's 567 municipalities, no one in New Jersey lives far from one. There are more diners here than in any other state, and on top of that, two of the three remaining diner manufacturers are located in the Garden State.

In a year of roadside research, Peter Genovese talked to owners, employees, and customers, and ate more bacon and egg sandwiches than he cares to remember. The result is a funny, revealing book about a beloved American institution. Whether you want to know where and how diners started, who invented eggs served in a skillet, why these twenty-four-hours-a-day eateries are so popular, or, most important, which one has the best French toast, Jersey Diners has the answers.

Packed with facts, trivia, and stories about the owners, employees, and clientele, the book is also complemented with over three hundred evocative, beautiful photos of the buildings, their distinctive décor, the food, and the people who love it from Sussex to Salem counties. In addition, this newly revised edition includes a fully updated directory that details where you can find every diner throughout the state.

This book is great. It is very well researched. I live in New Jersey and have eaten at some of these diners, and they are described so vividly it makes me feel like I just walked into one. It is also full of Information. How many diner owners are greeks? You will have to read the book to find out. Whether you live in New Jersey or not, this a great read for any one who loves Retro-american history

5 out of 5 stars It Brings back old memories!.......1998-03-27

This book was a sheer joy to find on the book shelf when I bought it for a friend for Christmas. I couldn't help but spend time reading it myself since I'm such a diner fanatic, and being in New Jersey, how couldn't you be? I read the book through and through, loving the photographs such as Rosie's and the Felix #9 diner in Bridgewater. I remember squealing with joy realizing that the good old Bound Brook Diner appeared on the front cover. Lunch there for 10 years is the best thing. I enjoyed reading the small accounts of "diner life" by other New Jersey citizens and I plesantly smiled to myself. I never would think anyone could ever capture the essence of the New Jersey Diner, but Genovese did. Can I have a Felix #9 sandwich please with pork roll now?

5 out of 5 stars Genovese book is a MUST for diner fans, and fun for all!.......1997-06-17

Peter Genovese has written an informative and enjoyable account of the life of that great American institution, the diner. Concentrating on his native New Jersey, one of the leading diner states, Genovese takes the reader on a mouth watering tour. In addition, this book helped me to discover the diner subculture that is alive and well in the U.S. today. I would love to see Genovese turn his descriptive talents loose on the rest of the Northeast - perhaps a companion book for each great diner state

This book contains poems that are like little stories about the daily people and life of each day. Each poem takes on a "life" of its own and takes you down a journey into the heart and soul of what the writer has seen and experienced. Good stuff and quite different, I like his style and for a few bucks you get the "real thing" from a poet that is a storyteller like another Jersey guy named Springsteen.

RELMS OF GOLD is a modern day ILIAD set on the plains of New Jersey as two Greek diners battle for supremecy. In this tragic-comic satire, Arthur N.Frangos chronicles the trivilization and erosion of traditional values by an American conumer-driven mass culture gone amok.

I've been in the mail order business for 13 years and I'm always looking for books and information that will help me improve my $7-million per year business. This book didn't cut it by a long shot. It's not even good for beginners because it really doesn't explain anything.

In all my years of searching out mail order books, I've only found ONE that has closely mirrored what I do to make $7 million per year.

Here's the deal: If you are serious about making money in mail order or direct response, don't get any of these waste-of-time books that "claim" to show you the business. The ONLY book that I've ever read that can (almost) exactly mirror exactly what I do for my $7-million per year business is a book by Vincent James called The 12-Month Millionaire which you can get on eBay (or type in on a search engine) since it's not a regular published book. The only thing I wouldn't follow in that book is the low priced items he recommends selling like wrinkle creams and weight loss pills (stick with information courses of $199+ with mail order as a RULE, ALWAYS). Lower end products of $99 or less will cause you to lose money in mail order EVERY TIME!!

If you're looking for some magic book or mysterious plan that will instantly make you rich without any work, this is not it. In fact, none exists. However, if you're looking for an honest, realistic look at how to make money from home in mail order, with a little work and effort on your part, this book will be a great help. Lance and Roger show you the real "secrets" about how to build your own profitable mail order business. In fact, they reveal many strategies and tactics that most would keep a secret. A refreshing look at the profitable world of mail order.

This book offers a fabulous step-by-step method for making money by mail. Its easy to miss some of the underlieing tones like how the authors explore, in depth, the art of advertising and how it is used to sell products. Anyone who is not that sharp may see only fluff (as another reviewer did).Although this book is written primarily for the ' business opportunity seeker' crowd, its universal methods can be applied to any products sold by mail. As one who makes money in mail order, it is obvious to me that the authors have actually 'been there, done that' as they reveal some long hidden truths about the market. Although the publisher or authors could have done a much better job proofreading, the gramitical errors do not take away from the gems of truth revealed in this book.

Have you ever seen those ads in home-business magazines that promise you the secret of making millions in exchange for [your money]? Well, this book explains the "secret" and tells you how to write and place those ads. (In case you're curious, here's the secret, for free: people see your ad promising the secret of getting rich, and send you money, making you rich. The secret of getting rich is placing ads that promise to tell other people about the secret.)

If that's your thing, this is the book for you, as long as you're not too picky about good writing: this book was not published with pride in craftsmanship. It's packed with errors in grammar, punctuation and typesetting. But then the goal of the book was to make money for the authors; proofreading was apparently just a waste of time.

I'll sell you the secret! My copy is available under "used books."

I purchased this book to gleen some insight and specific guidance into the world of Home-Based Mail Order Business. What I got instead was a book that spent way too much print on common sense things like, "be patient,it will pay off" and "do your homework and success will follow",instead of the real bread and butter specifics of starting a Mail Order Business. I knew very little about Mail Order before reading the book and after reading it, still know very little. The book also appeared to be a low budget effort as there were numerous typos and grammatical errors throughout.
