Packed with history.......2007-07-08
This book delivers much more than its title suggests. Beginning with the history of the Massachusetts cotton mills, the author takes us through local and national politics, connecting with subjects as diverse as the settlement of Kansas, the founding of Mass. General Hospital, several national elections, the split between north and south, "cotton or conscience" Whigs, and the influence of the Bostonians' example on John D. Rockefeller. By focusing intensely on a group of Boston businessmen, we learn a great deal about the history of America in the early 19th century. Some chapters were a bit difficult to follow, however, for two reasons. First, the author treated different themes (politics, philanthropy, banking, etc.) in separate chapters, which is fine, but that meant that with each chapter we started back at the beginning chronologically - so we went through the 1820's, the 1830's, the 1840's, etc., multiple times. Second, because the book deals with several generations of intertwined families, the same surname can refer to one of several different people. You really have to pay attention to know and remember who is who. Lastly, the author referred to such a rich number and variety of sources that I would have liked a Reference section in addition to the Notes section.

Book Description
What has made Silicon Valley so productive of new technologies and new firms? How did its pioneering achievements begin—in computer networking, semiconductors, personal computing, and the Internet—and what forces have propelled its unprecedented growth? This collection of nine chapters by contributors from varied disciplines—business, geography, history, regional planning, and sociology—examines the history, development, and entrepreneurial dynamics of Silicon Valley.
Part I, “History,” provides context for the Valley’s success by exploring its early industrial roots. It traces the development of the electronics industry in Silicon Valley back to the founding of Federal Telegraph in 1908, and discusses the role of defense spending and the relationship with Stanford University in the region’s growth. Part II, “Institutions,” emphasizes the importance of supporting institutions and practices in helping Valley startups succeed. Four chapters explore the role of law firms in facilitating the formation of new companies, the evolution of the venture capital industry and its role in funding new firms, the importance of labor mobility, and the significance of close interfirm relationships in the success of Silicon Valley companies.
Part III, “General Explanations,” presents three different perspectives on the environment that has made Silicon Valley so successful. The first chapter considers Silicon Valley as an ecosystem of interacting institutions, individuals, and a culture that encourages and nurtures entrepreneurship. The second chapter argues that Silicon Valley should not be seen as a region in which relationships are based on civic virtue, but rather one in which trust is based on performance, which makes it uniquely permeable to new ideas and talented individuals. The final chapter contends that institutions specializing in new firm formation are responsible for Silicon Valley's unique ability to foster technological advances.
Customer Reviews:
perfect book for the new Silicon valley residents!.......2001-06-15
At the center of all questions about the Valley lies the matter of innovation-for the Valley occasionally appears like a perpetual innovation machine. I say "innovation" rather than simply "invention," because innovation, to me, means invention implemented. And I have grudgingly come to realize that invention is often the easy part of innovation. The hard part is usually the implementation. Here I was particularly interested in Stuart Leslie's well-chosen quotation from a letter of Frederick Terman. Terman was the Stanford University dean who played godfather to Hewlett Packard and so many other early start-ups in the Valley. When he left the university to work on radar during World War II, he wrote back to a colleague at Stanford, "I had never before realized the amount of work required to make a device ready for manufacture after one had a good working model." It was a lesson he clearly learned well as he guided young Stanford graduates to innovative success.

Book Description
Valley of Opportunity recreates an age when Indians, colonists, and post-Revolutionary settlers embraced a similar dream: to create a successful economy in the rural hinterland of the middle colonies.
Peter Mancall offers connections between the development of a particular region, previously overlooked by most historians, and the wide pattern of American economic change. Integrating a range of disciplines, from anthropology through ecology and geography to zoology, he seeks to answer the questions: what did different groups of people make of the natural resources of this river valley and how did they allocate the rewards? His answers provide a novel overview of the economic culture of eighteenth-century America.

Customer Reviews:
First book to explore minds of Asiaýs top business leaders.......2000-12-01
Unfortunately, for one reason or another, Asian business leaders have not exactly written a wealth of material documenting their timeless management philosophies, success stories, and practical advice on key business concepts. Subsequently, there is a dearth of materials on managing in Asia and Asian business success stories. This book helps to fill the void, giving valuable information from the leading names in Asian business markets. Now, for the first time, some of the region's best and brightest business leaders have been brought together in one exciting collection.
Rajat Gupta of McKinsey, Stan Shih of Acer, Washington SyCip of SGV Group, Joanna Lau of LAU Technologies, David K.P. Li of Bank of East Asia Ltd, Cheong Choong Kong of Singapore Airlines, are some of the 32 leading Asian CEOs who share their thoughts on doing business in Asia. Informative, insightful, and inspirational, the book offers a fascinating glimpse into the finest business minds in the region.
The 32 articles in Asian Business Wisdom are organised into six parts covering Management Philosophies, Instilling Corporate Culture, The Entrepreneurial Spirit, Lessons from China, Sales and Marketing Strategies and Managing in Tough Times. Each article is accompanied by an introduction that highlights its author's life and business achievements and a list of online resources which points the reader to related articles or organisations.
Sadly, except for a passing reference to Robert Kuok Hock Nien on page 169, Malaysians are conspicuous by their absence in this book. Despite this glaring omission, this is nevertheless a book from which managers worldwide will surely benefit. Economic and financial crisis notwithstanding, Asia remains in the sights of many global business leaders and decision-makers as a region of vast economic and business potential.
A freelance writer and editor, Filipina Dinna Louise C. Dayao is a former associate editor of World Executive Digest, one of Asia's leading business magazines.

Pennsylvania Breweries
ASIN: 0786419725 |
Book Description
Can you name America's oldest brewery? If visions of outsized draft horses plod to mind, you're way off. Instead, head for the mountainsof northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1829, in Pottsville, German immigrant D.G. Yuengling set up shop to slake the thirst of immigrants flocking to the region's booming anthracite coalfields. Five generations have steered the family-owned brewery through fires, temperance, depressions, Prohibition, and the whims of changing tastes; outlasted hundreds of local competitors; and turned Yuengling from a regional name into a national institution. For 175 years, the hard-working, hands-on approach of Yuengling has kept it going, and growing, while thousands of other brands vanished into history's recycling bin.
Kick back, relax, and crack open a cool history of Yuengling and Son, Inc., America's oldest brewery. It begins with the brewery's founding in 1829 by German immigrant D.G. Yuengling, who saw an opportunity in the region's growing, beer-loving immigrant population. Subsequent chapters follow the brewery into the age of bottled beer and advertising; through the dark days of Prohibition; the age of consolidation, when a few big names swallowed up or buried most regional brews; and into the age of microbrews, when consumers turned away from bland brands in search of a beer with character, leading to Yuengling's resurgence on the national scene. An epilogue gauges the company's current status and immediate future, and a chronology lists key events in the brewery's existence. Notes and copious illustrations supplement this history, which also includes a list of reference works, and an index.
Customer Reviews:
A great coffee table book........2006-04-11
Unlike the other reviewer, I have read it and I like it better than the beer. It's obvious the author spent many a long night at the local Pottsville pubs interviewing the Yuengling employees and faithful, probably while sucking down a great many black and tan's in the process. Loved the book. So as I sit here sipping a Lord Chesterfield, here's to you Mr. Noon and to you Dick Yuengling; keep up the good work!
Book? Let's review the beer..........2005-08-26
This is by far the best beer brewed in America. Yes, I know.. 'Yuengling, what kind of name is that.. it sounds Japanese' All I can tell you is this, growing up in PA, and actually graduating from the author's place of employment (GO HUSKIES), we grew up on this beer. (after we hit 21 of course)
The Lager is incredible, although I recommend you get it as cold as possible as it tastes even better as it approaches freezing temperatures..
In the fall, swing to their Black and Tan, a slightly more filling beer, but amazing taste. You don't need it quite as cold as the Lager.. The best part is this stuff comes in 16 oz cans...
Next for winter, break open a case of porter. This stuff is so good you can drink it right out of the case without it ever hitting the fridge.. especially if you live in PA and store it in your garage during the winter months.. After 2 or 3 of the porters, give your keys to your designated driver, and switch back to the Lager, as the Porter is quite filling..
For a special treat, may I also recommend the Chesterfield Ale.
When I lived in New Orleans and would travel back to PA, my neighbors would ask me to bring cases of this stuff down for them. The Black and Tan is better than Abita Turbo Dog..
The best part is you can get a case of this stuff for under $20. Try getting a case of Guiness for anything near that.
So have I read the book? NO, but I have cracked open quite a few Yuenglings in my time.. Maybe it's time to enjoy a few while reading up on the last 175 years.. Although I would have to sacrifice 2 cases of Yuengling to buy the book. HMMMMMMMMMM

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and informative brew guide.......2007-07-12
Lew Bryson's offering comes with a strong personal touch. His humor is perfect for this type of book and readership, and his knowledge of the subject is thoroughly evident. He makes recommendations (his favorite[s] at each brewery) with which I have yet to find fault. Being newer to Pennsylvania, I've found Bryson's guide to be the single best reference book I now own! Highly recommended.
Great insight into Pennsylvania Breweries.......2007-01-31
Enjoyable reading on the history on past breweries and up-to-date info on current breweries. Have since visited several breweries and look forward to touring additional. Would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good local beer.
not bad but could be better ..........2006-03-02
I enjoy Lew's books & feel they are a great help in finding local breweries & the like . I only wish he'd be more opinionated about the beers at each place . He's being too much of a Mr. Nice Guy about his " reviews " . Every place you go to is not going to have great beer / food .
Fine guide for locals and travelers in PA.......2005-04-02
After watching a tie-in PBS documentary, I purchased this book for the beer connoisseur in my life. We were familiar with two of the breweries mentioned and found the write-ups to be accurate, so now we're setting out on occasional trips to others in the state. The good news is, many of them have very decent restaurants where the beer can be sampled. One caution: this edition is 5 years old. Do call to make sure the information is current before jumping in the car. A postscript: Mr. Beer Connoisseur has found several local beers that stand up to or even exceed his European favorites.
Three Thumbs up from Bob Klein!.......2000-01-21
This book is a entrancing and resilient entry to any beer lovers library. Each brewery description lingers gracefully in your mind like belgian lace.Even at midbook, although more poignant, like a loyal friend, this tome does not fail to disappoint.

Book Description
The Straub Brewery was founded in the 1870s by German immigrant Peter Straub. At the age of 19, during the rise in German nationalism, Straub left his home and family in search of the American dream. Today, the Straub Brewery remains one of the oldest breweries in the country and is still owned and operated by its founding family, now into its sixth generation. The Straub Brewery takes great pride in producing Straub beer and the award-winning Straub Light, which are distributed throughout Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio and enjoyed by fans from around the world. Straub Brewery illustrates the evolution of this Pennsylvania landmark business, which has spanned three centuries. From the days when Straub beer was delivered in wooden kegs by horse and buggy to the newest stainless steel kegs that are delivered via semitruck, Straub Brewery takes readers on an unprecedented and thirst-quenching tour of the operation. This pictorial history unearths the Straub family legacy, the brewing process, and the events that have secured the brewery's eternal tap on history.
