This book is pretty easy to follow, if you can follow simple algebraic graphs and logic (emphasize logic). I thought at first that maybe this book may have been easy, so I looked around on amazon and inferrred from what I read that all the micro books that are making big sales to universities are the same. By that I mean not to math intensive, just schedules, graphs, and definitions. I got an A in the class and feel like I definitely learned something. I recommend this book for those who want to learn on own also.

'Foundations of Microeconomics' by Robin Bade and Michael Parkin is an interesting text for an introductory course in Microeconomics. The primary academic division at the beginning level of economics is the Micro/Macro-economic divide; often it is taught as a two-semester sequence for students going into economics, political science, history, business or any other such discipline that requires a thorough grounding in economic theory and principles.
Bade and Parkin are aware from decades of teaching experience that students often get lost in a sea of detail, and that many introductory economics texts (as do the introductory texts of many fields) attempt to do too much too quickly in introducing their subjects. Bade and Parkin organise each chapter, therefore, around only a few core principles - three or four at most. They have also built into this text a very extensive set of charts and diagrams to demonstrate the points that are being explained in the text.
Each chapter begins with a checklist, and ends with checkpoints (which follow on from section checkpoints along the way). Included in this is a featured called the 'Eye on...' feature - these are small articles that highlight practical, real life situations in which the principles under discussion apply. They may be domestic or international in scope, and may be current or significant in history.
The book is adaptable to many different uses - the introductory pages highlight four alternative means of focus that the book can take: a traditional micro-economics course approach; a public policy emphasis; a business emphasis; or a shorter policy emphasis. Each of these build on core principles in the early chapters, and then expand from there depending upon the primary interests of the class or reader.
The layout of the book is visually interesting and lively. The use of colour, photographs, and charts and graphs adds tremendously to the feel of the text. The text is sharp and concise, without sacrificing clarity or content.
One very important section that I wish would have more detail and emphasis is the appendix to chapter 1 - Making and Using Graphs. Interpreting and drawing graphs seems to be the single largest problem area for students I tutor in microeconomics, so more emphasis on this part would be appreciated, particularly as the skills given in this section carry throughout the entire book. As a primary tool, the relegation of this to an appendix sends somewhat of a mixed message of the importance of graphs. Perhaps renaming this as a chapter in its own right would help somewhat, with more detail and examples (much like in mathematics, it is in the repetition of the exercises that the students gain mastery of the concepts). Students are indeed called upon to do many exercises during the course of this text (learning by doing, rather than just through reading), but the early grounding in graphical representation is critical.

This book is hilarious at times, I mean, it teaches economics well also. But the best part is the dry, witty humor characteristic of Perloff himself...took a seminar with the guy, he ruleeeez, with a "z."
easy to understand and entertaining to read too........2005-06-06
the author explains the graphs quite well in his textbook. all the examples are interesting and relate to real life. i've had the honor of having the author as a sub for our regular lecturer for a week at UC Berkeley. his book's just like his lectures, very entertaning and does not bore me to sleep.
but the book does not help with the difficult tests given since it only covers the basics, one needs to do the problems in the study guide in order to really apply the concepts.

Had this for my second micro course. Yes, it is light on the math, but the material is there and for someone that isn't majoring in economics, it is a good buy. The reading is very easy and the examples/applications that are in the book are very good and interesting.
The Worst Undergraduate Text in Microeconomics.......2005-02-27
I am rating this book 1 star because I don't have the option of rating it a 0. 0 is what it actually deserves. I was required to buy this book when I took a course taught by the author, Jeff Perloff, at UC Berkeley. This book is the absolute worst micro text I've ever come across. It's confusing and unorganized much like the author himself. If you're looking for a good intro micro text, I suggest you look elsewhere. I highly recommend Walter Nicholson's Microeconomic Theory.

Virtually everywhere in this book, the author brags about how readable the book is. For one thing, after half a semester of ECON 211 Principles of Microeconomics, this book has not been helpful at all.
Graphs are placed on a page and the author spends two pages explaining the graph. The theory behind all of the paragraphs was designed to baffle instead of to enlighten. While some real-life case studies (Dell's organizational methods) are interesting reads, what the book needs to do more is to talk about applying theories to strategies in real life.
It may be true that I am taking a Principles of Microeconomics course, but in a course where I am expected to understand how to apply theories to problems in the real-world, this book is a long way from being readable or being helpful in a course in micro.

This book was exactly like i wanted. It has a very easy approach to many aspects of Economics so that the reader can be comfortable with both easy and advanced topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

I am currently taking and Inro to Economics class. I read this book when ever I get the chance. I never really want to read books that have to do with my classed, but this book i don't mind reading. It's taking me a little while to get through it but I can pretty much understand everything that I am reading. The only thing I don't like about this book is that many of the definitions are worded in complicated ways. But if you read the book it explains in a different way that you can understand. This book also uses real like situations in order for you to understabd it too.

I recently took an Economics class and used this book for class. I found the book very easy to use along with the instructors notes. Key terms and definitions are provided alongside the text for easy referral later. The summary at the end of each chapter hits upon key points and helped with studying. The problems and exercises at the end of the chapters were helpful also, and the book provided the answers in the back, just in case.
