Book Description
With typical Economist style and clarity, Economist Economics provides accessible and expert analysis that shows how to make sense of the modern economy. Substantially revised from the successful first edition, the book offers an in-depth examination of different aspects of the modern economy. Aimed at those in business, it is organized in four parts:
- The Global Economy, which looks at global balances, China, U.S. influence, and central banks.
- Globalization, which examines the whole issue of globalization and global capital.
- After the New Economy, which analyzes what impact e-economics has had and will have.
- Economic Facts and Fallacies, which spells out basic economic truths and exposes some economic canards.

Excellent.......2007-07-23
How the world economy evolves and how the market economy behaves are something this book can offer us to understand.
Straightforward discussion of many of the prominent issues in the global economy.......2007-07-12
I have no formal economics background and have often wondered how dangerous the US trade deficit is, what are the real benefits and risks of globalization, the US versus the Eurozone versus Japan, and what role central banks and interest rates play in the global economy. It is often difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff in any attempt to understand these issues, it seems as if there is an economic pundit or expert on TV or the internet who will support virtually any position. This book, published by the Economist magazine, is an easy to read discussion of virtually every major economic issue of importance today. This book is not an economics primer, per se, so if that is what you are looking for, buy a textbook. It is, however, a primer about a wide range of topics in economics of particular importance in the modern world economy. This book is divided up into four major sections: The New Liberalism (the case for globalization), the lopsided world economy, the arteries of capitalism, and Wordly philosophy. Each of these major sections contains several smaller monographs about specific issues such as growth and China, the US trade imbalance, the case for globalization, finance, banking, and many others. Each of these monographs is short, focused, and only loosely tied with the other monographs, making this an easy read. The level of this book is about that of the Economist magazine itself, if you like their weekly publication, you will probably like this. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the global economy.
A Real page Turner.......2007-06-18
Having no formal background in economics, I never thought that I would enjoy reading this book so much. I enjoy reading the Economist magazine, but I found this book even more enjoyable. The "real world" examples really delivered the points in a clear and relevant manner. I found that I could read large chunks of this book at a time without getting bored. I am planning on reading this book again so as to glean further pieces of information on the second pass.
Book Description
Making Sense of a Changing Economy presents an unorthodox and original view of the current state of economic theory and policies. Deriding the general trend for `econobabble', the author explains the reason why conventional wisdom in economics now seems irrelevant and looks to likely future scenarios. Entertaining throughout, Nell employs a lightness of touch and wit not generally It associated with economic literature. It will appeal to those who care what is really happening in the economy.

Making Sense From the Start.......2002-03-08
If I were teaching the introductory courses in Economics this is the book I would use in a final unit to test the students'ability to critically absorb what should have been learnt throught the semester or the year. As the author meant: this is a book to digest the textbooks in much the same way an antiacid works upon an upset stomach. Written at a level that should be understood by anyone with the basic rudiments in economic analysis, it should, at least, expose the reader to an interdisciplinary approach to it.
The author dwells into the contradictions between theory and practice stemming from the ideological and epistemological foundations on which social phenomena is perceived. It is written in an easygoing style in which the author is as comfortable in explaining in three pages and a footnote the complexities of: Marx'labor theory of value, Sraffa's standard commodity, von Neumann's maximum rate of growth and how the Perron-Frobenius theorem relates to equilibrium prices in an exchange economy (mind you, with a minimum of lineal algebra),- as in explaining how Machiavelli's and Hobbes' understanding of human behavior help us understand the workings of the market in a capitalist economy and how it relates to other social institutions.
For the economist this is a book much like - in intent if not in content - to Joan Robinson's Freedom and Necessity through which economic phenomena is seen within the context of historical evolution and social reality. To the layman in Economics it provides the philosophical, historical and sociological framework within which the different issues debated among economists,in the realms of theory and public policy, can be understood.

In 1997, the sky fell in Asia. Up until the moment the Thai currency crisis began in May of that year, most pundits could see no end to the "Asian miracle." Now many of those same pundits are predicting a more severe drop while others go so far as to suggest that Asia is entering a "lost decade." The hard truth, suggests Callum Henderson, the Managing Currency Analyst for Asia at Standard & Poor's, is not so dire or dramatic. While Henderson acknowledges that most of the affected countries, particularly Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, have a long way to go in transforming their economic systems, the long term outlook for Asia is good. The conditions that help to make high rates of growth possible--high savings rates, low taxation, good education systems, and high productivity--are still in place. What needs changing are the government policies that focused too heavily on exports as the main engine of economic growth.
Henderson traces how and why the currency crisis happened and finds useful parallels between it and the Mexican crisis that began in late 1994. He also offers specific remedies--such as the creation of a domestic bond market in Asia--and points to compelling opportunities in countries with mature financial systems such as Singapore. This is the first comprehensive look at the Asian financial crisis and should be useful to anyone doing business or investing in Asia. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
The first complete coverage of the Asian currency crisis and what it means for investors worldwide. Asia's recent economic troubles affect billions of people around the globe. Asia Falling provides a detailed, accessible account of the economic and political policies that led to Asia's currency crisis. It's the first comprehensive, authoritative analysis of the crisis, and what it means to the larger world of investors. This up-to-the-minute work, packed with solid recommendations for investors, names the countries that should emerge strongest, outlines the steps Asian economies must take to regain their worldwide luster, and provides policy-level political analysis on the actions and reactions that led to Asia's currency crisis.

"Ora tau, Mingkem"(Javanese expression).......1999-11-17
This book is well written which makes it a usefull tool to improve my English. The content is OK, but nothing worth it to rave about.(Perhaps, the author need to visit Continent of Asia little more often.)
20/20 hindsight.......1999-04-08
This is a good book -- it tells what we already know. Too bad that the author could not predict any of these events -- but then of course hindsight is always 20/20! I do not think this book helps one to do business in Asia. One major drawback - the author seems to have no understanding of Asian business and seems not to have sullied his conclusions by speaking with any Asians. Read this book for a glimpse of perfect hindsight -- but read also "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley for a more fair appraisal of the Asian situation and a terrific understanding of Asian business.
Insightful account for 1997 Asian currency Crisis.......1999-02-09
The Auther explain the underlining historical events ( e.g. the ups and down of dollar Yen exchange rate) that lead to the boom and bust of the Asian economics. He also account for the 1994 Mexico financial crisis in similar manner. Useful for understanding events shaping the world's economics.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the First International Workshop on Semantic Web Services and Web Process Composition, SWSWPC 2004, held in San Diego, CA, USA in July 2004.
The 9 revised full papers presented together with an introduction by the volume editors, a panel summary and the extended abstract of an invited talk were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement.
Web services and Web processes promise to ease several current Web infrastructure challenges, such as the integration of data, applications and processes. Web services are truly platform independent and allow the development of distributed loosely coupled applications, a key characteristic for the success of dynamic processes.
