    Book Description

The digitization of such traditional goods as books, music, and movies, in combination with "traditional" digital productions like software, has given rise to new twists and turns in economic arguments. The primary reasons for these digital-led developments in economic theory are that digital goods often exhibit "network effects"--consumer benefits that grow with the spreading use of certain goods--and that digital products often have low or negligible reproduction costs. McKenzie describes how the advent of digital goods has forced changes in firms' production and pricing strategies, and how it has led to the reassessment of an array of public policies, from privacy to piracy.

    Book Description

Today's women work not one but three shifts: the first from nine to five, the second at home, and the third in their minds as they review the decisions and actions of the day. While the first and second shifts may be physically exhausting, the third shift can be psychologically rending because many women use it to second-guess their motives, doubt their choices, and question their trade-offs. Michele Bolton shows women how to turn the third shift into a source of self-awareness and self-confidence instead. Drawing from a three-year study of women in Silicon Valley and her own experiences as a working mother, Bolton explores the three most important dilemmas all women face, whether they're corporate executives, entrepreneurs, or full-time moms. She then presents women with a practical plan for facing these dilemmas, making the hard choices, and embracing their decisions.

5 out of 5 stars The Third Shift: Create Maximum Power for Self-Actualization.......2001-01-06

In this single volume, women are provided with excellent advice on how to manage hard choices in their career, their home, and (in fact) their entire life. The title refers to the "self-destructive and exhausting ritual" to which so many women become hostage. For many of them, this shift seems endless. Bolton observes: "Rather than deriving joy from their choices as women -- to work, to stay at home, to help out in the community -- many women are half-crazed by the constant demands, options, and trade-offs." She organizes her material within three Parts:

The Identity Challenge: Who Are We?

The Task Challenge: What Do We Do?

The Balance Challenge: Who Comes First?

Bolton draws upon a wealth of research (hers and others') which guides and informs her observations, recommendations, and conclusions. In the Afterword, she suggests that "In many ways, women today live in a surreal world, floating back and forth between an outdated cultural mirror that prescribes certain genderized roles, and then careening suddenly toward the possibility of an entirely new image, with as-yet-unknown life scripts and patterns for its many actors and actresses." Although written for women, this book should also be be read by men who also have "hard choices" to make. If they make the correct choices, perhaps many of the decisions made by women will be less difficult.

5 out of 5 stars The Third Shift.......2000-10-27

This book is great! I am 45, a highly driven person with two school age children. I left a corporate management carreer after 15+ years feeling completely burned out and confused. Even though I knew it was not possible to be a Superwoman, I still tried to do it all. This book explains my feelings about my corporate experience and is a good guide to me for my current at home experience. I have gone back to reread it many times. I am now aware of my Third Shift, always have had it, just never gave it a name.

5 out of 5 stars The Third Shift=Practical and Thoughtful Advice!.......2000-10-15

Choices are always tough, and Michele Bolton's THE THIRD SHIFT makes them so much easier to make. I am a professional woman who, like many other readers of this book, am a mother, wife and involved community member as well. The societal infrastructure for women hasn't yet caught up with our aspirations as women -- to be the best at work, to be the best at home, to change the world -- and it is because we live in this transitional era that Bolton's book is so important for women like me to read. Instead of chastizing ourselves for trying to take on so much, Bolton's study shows that questioning oneself and others is the very essence of being a successful woman. In addition to providing useful suggestions for professional women in the corporate workplace to be (and feel) more successful, Bolton also turns her attention to entrepreneurial women launching their own businesses, a move she says that is so much more than a job change, but that involves a more profound change in one's very identity. Finally, Bolton even offers several chapters of suggestions for "stay-at-home" moms, so that no matter what your life choices are, you can find out how to feel better about them by reading this book! Best of all in this book is the personal voice of the author. She writes as a researcher, academic and executive coach, but also as a woman and mother. As you read each chapter (even the ones that don't seem to relate to you directly), you often feel as though you are reading about yourself or someone you know. Take time to buy this book and then sit down and browse through it. This book won't change the world, but it will change how you look at the world, and how you feel about your place in it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read for all women in and out of the workplace.......2000-07-22

I purchased this book as I am a woman about to have my first child after spending many years building a career. I found this book to be enlightening and fascinating. Like many first time older mothers I have concerns about continuing to work and raise a child. Not only did this book help me come to terms with the fact that it is okay to work and have children but it helped me understand how women's behavior in the workplace and their tendency towards self-doubt is normal. Michele Bolton's use of examples from her meetings with numerous women is an excellent way for the reader to identify with the problems that all women face on a daily basis, both at home and in the workplace.

I have very rarely read a non-fiction book that I wanted to keep reading as if it was a good novel. It is written in a great style and uses a "self awareness" versus "self-doubt" analogy in each chapter with which I claimed total identification. I am recommending this book to all my friends. Many men could also benefit from reading this book too.

The provocative title is just the beginning. Wait till you see what's inside... Written by former advertising executive and self-confessed workaholic Karen Salmansohn, this is not your mother's advice book. Nope, no warm and maternal platitudes here. Salmansohn has written a devilishly funny and utterly bawdy book that also happens to be intelligent and insightful. Salmansohn takes gender roles, chews them up, spits them out and tells working women how to get out there in the world and get what they deserve.

    Book Description

The Art of War for the '90s working woman, How to Succeed in Business Without a Penis offers advice from real, successful women, a "Chick List" of clever and aggressive career suggestions, and pithy affirmations from "Women Who Like It on Top." A must-have power tool for every working woman, this hilarious book by the author of How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days or Less (Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers) provides plenty of ideas to give the business boys a little healthy competition.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and Help.......2003-01-21

Interesting book -- contains both humor and help. What convinced me to buy and read it ? Why, the negative comments from Patriarchs !! Sexism is alive (sometimes seems to thrive) in the USA today. If some men are threatened by this book, maybe that it is a good sign. Salmansohn is a fun and interesting author, as seen again and again in her books. I also like her newest, 'How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing' -- which is another good blend of humor and help.

1 out of 5 stars Another worthless book.......2002-04-30

Yet another worthless book from Karen. This author loves to take any opportunity to attack anything thats symbolically male, including in this case, the world of business which was created by men.Men should not feel guilty or apologize for that fact either, nor should they be sympathetic of the "female struggle" in business or any other domain of men.Its important to note also that men created the free-enterprise system and all business schools,as well as higher-education in general.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Mostly True.......2001-12-28

This was the first book I've read of Karen Salmansohn's, and I enjoyed it. Karen comments on the business world and gives advice, and then always gives the flipside to that advice. It's mostly just humor, but there are some truths contained therein. Though the author is evidently a very successful businesswoman, I would buy this more for its humor than as direction for women in the workplace due to some of the questionable advice she gives (such as women might do well to dress sexy and use their sexuality at work...I'm not sure I concur that that is a way for women to climb the ladder nor that it helps women to be respected in the workplace). An enjoyable read that will elicit lots of chuckles.

    4 out of 5 stars "Great advice".....says a guy.......2000-09-09

While I have little experience in the realm of women's
career/self-help/humor, I thought this book was fantastic. It's seems
to cover in a comprehensive fashion every women-in-the-workplace
dilemma I have ever heard about. In a strange way, it starts with the
most existential question first: "What do I really really want in a
career." It then works back from there to the gimmes like "is it
OK for me to flirt in the workplace?" (unequivocally yes, if only
to even things out a little bit). The book is brutally honest about
practical tactics for dealing with office issues.

    4 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2000-07-07

Funny and the merit of truth. Great book for women looking for confidence in business endeavors.

    4 out of 5 stars A handy book.......2003-03-20

For a time-constraint working person, this book is easy to read. Every chapter is a story of a woman in different scenerio and the challenges she faces. I related to most cases easily with my own personal working experiences, and also some I know others experienced in the workplace. For those scenerios I have not encountered before, I now have the tips on my hand to tackle them. Dr Adele talks about working towards that 'inner circle' and tips of how to get around challenging situations like if your boss steals your idea and how to stand out among the boys' crowd. In the book examples of assertive responses were given to each scenerio, indicating tact of words. Her approach is positive, assertive and powerful. She emphasises building winning relationships with management, improving coworker relationships, and encouraging ambition and risk taking. During networking sessions in an outplacement program, people were asked if they will participate in office politics. Some would totally shun it. This book has taught me how work constructively into a good working relationship with the management, a skill that could be mastered, and could possibly enhanced my profession. I believe more examples could be drawn to append to the book. Perhaps a readers' corner for everyone to throw in their own experiences that might extend the book's intention. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a quick shot in the arms.

    4 out of 5 stars Wise Warrior.......2000-03-28

Dr. Adele Scheele's book addresses several specific obstacles that most working women face. In fact some of the chapter titles are virtually identical to articles she has contributed to for "Working Woman" magazine in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

She succinctly focuses on several work-related issues that most of us have experienced at some point. What's good about the book is that she doesn't waste time in getting to the crux of the problem; there's thankfully not too much background info given in the intro to whatever issue she is focusing on. Her ability lies in the way she grabs your attention and keeps it while going about the difficult task of explaining the strategy involved. Dr. Scheele is also quite frank in telling how NOT to deal w/a situation and why. She has keen insight into the way most women think and would react. She explains why reacting the way most would is dead wrong, hurts credibility or is often viewed as sour grapes.

The only thing wrong is that she shorts some issues like ageism. Her advice is good but not the answer entirely. It needs more substance; more suggestions, more ways to combat it effectively and intelligently.

I love the way she describes more than one path a conversation could take and more importantly how to adjust your response accordingly. Ideally you can still come out looking like a winner.

Another wonderful thing about the book is that it covers loads of topics - lesser authors would have us reading at length about each problem discussed. She doesn't waste time. Book is a few years old and still offers viable counsel.

It prepares the grant writer not only to write good proposals, it instructs how to write winning proposals. It is easy to read and includes charts, graphs, samples, and review questions and exercises.I highly recommend this book to anyone aspriring to win large federal grants, but it can be useful to those seeking smaller State or private grants as well.

5 out of 5 stars Grant Writing Strategies.......2002-11-09

Patrick W. Miller indeed provides strategies for winning grants in his second edition entitled, "Grant Writing: Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals." Throughout this easy to read book are limitless well-written definitions and descriptions, often in a sample format. Well thought out appendices and glossary of terms further strengthen the book.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are excellent for the beginner, as well as a wonderful review for those with experience. Within the exercises, the reader has opportunities to locate, review, and analyze solicitations; writing activities before and after call for proposals; writing and editing of narrative; budget spreadsheets; and a simulated proposal process with examples. The sample exhibits throughout the book present realistic directions so that even the most timid grant writer could approach the process with confidence.

Few details are left out of this book. For example, on page 73, the author not only emphasizes the various skills necessary to write a narrative, but he also includes the importance of "a place to write, tools for writing, time to write and a comfortable atmosphere away from distractions." It is the details that make it possible for this book to be an individual self-help course or for classroom use. If I were teaching a grant development class to community college instructors or non-profits, this book could be utilized for both settings.

Federal grants can be confusing and often present themselves as a maze. Patrick W. Miller, PhD., eliminates the confusion through a thorough exploration of each topic area. Particularly helpful are the explanations of the various federal agencies that offer solicitations and the author has included details of websites and how to navigate those websites.

In the preface, Patrick W. Miller, PhD., indicates that the book is designed "to walk funding seekers through the major phases of grant development." This is a true statement along with a variety of ideas and techniques that he presents to assist individuals and groups with developing a grant proposal. "Grant Writing: Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals" is an excellent resource and would serve multiple purposes for individuals and institutions that purchase the book.

5 out of 5 stars Grant Writing Strategies.......2002-10-28

Miller's second edition systematically covers the entire competitive grant writing process from identifying funding sources to the planning that organizations must undertake before making applications to the writing of actual proposals to following up after submissions. He goes beyond the mechanics in each section, providing advice as to key factors to be considered at each stage of the process.

Numerous exhibits will help the reader, particularly the new grant writer, in planning and preparing applications. For example, a planning chapter includes exhibits that advise how to structure requests for information from funding sources and how to obtain copies of previous winning proposals. Other chapters provide numerous samples and explanations of the various parts of a grant proposal, with an entire chapter devoted to budget preparation.

The authur includes a glossary, list of additional resources, and exercises with each chapter. The exercise solutions illustrate good planning practices and model proposal outlines, cover letters, and proposals. Individuals responsible for grant writing may find this a good text for workshops held for administrators and professionals within their organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Tool For Successful Grantwriting.......2002-10-23

As an educator, I appreciated the concise format Dr. Miller used in his explanation of the complex process of grant writing. The organization of the book and detailed explanations of the phases involved in proposal writing helped the reader gain a clear understanding of the grant writing process. Especially useful were the numerous exhibits used to illustrate sample letters, graphs, flowcharts, budgets, etc. involved in the grant writing process.
The chapter reviews and practice activities actively engaged the reader into a guided practice of required components at each phase. The numerous tips and strategies from an experienced grant writer will help this inexperienced educator procur funds for my school district. Many thanks, Dr. Miller!
