          Book Description

The division of the world into rich and poor nations, and the division within poor nations between a minority of rich people and a majority of poor people living at a minimum subsistence level, has been obvious to careful observers for a long time. This book gives an overview of the problems of underdevelopment confronting third-world countries, making use of both Marxist and neo-Keynesian methods of analysis. It makes clear the historical origins of these contemporary problems, particularly with reference to the major countries of Asia and Latin America, and discusses the ways in which inequalities, both within and between countries, are propaged and perpetuated. Other problems analysed are the typical patterns of fluctuating growth faced by third-world countries; the social structures in both rural and urban areas and their influence on the behaviour of governments and private investors in these countries; and environmental control and population planning issues faced by these countries. Finally, an introduction is provided to the planning methods adopted by most third-world countries and the hurdles such planning has encountered. The illustrations are drawn widely from among third-world countries.

          Book Description

Development may be best understood in terms of the interplay among capital accumulation, the state and class. Subject to globalizing structures, classes are examined in light of their interactions with culture, especially gender, religion, and ecology. Case studies about Brazil, the newly industrializing Asian countries, China, and Mozambique reveal three possibilities for overcoming underdevelopment by joining, leaving or weaving through global capitalism. The conclusions do not fail to present specific principles upon which policies can be based.

1 out of 5 stars Lack of Facts, Full of Attacks.......2005-11-03

Prof. Mittelman uses literature as a weapon against all the good ideas that could be used to help bring millions of people out of poverty. The purpose of this book (and his others as well) is to claim that neoliberalism is bad and that America and the West is evil. His attacks are not based on fact and cites distant history as reason for current problems with the global economy. Instead of focusing on how we can bring about change and make life better for those living on less than a dollar a day, he is more concerned with making America look bad. It is funny that he makes his money on the heals of global capitalism (the very capitalism that he denounces) in Washington, DC (the city that represents Western imperialism and evil according to the Prof). This book should only be cited as a neo-Marxist text damning the ritheous path of neo-liberalism. Less books like Prof. Mittelman's will only help the debate move towards how we can help the poor.

            Book Description

Wars, especially civil wars, are among the most serious causes of human suffering and underdevelopment. Yet economic analysis of developing countries at war is relatively rare. These volumes aim to reverse this neglect, tracing the economic and social consequences of conflict both theoretically and through empirical investigations, including seven country case studies. A major objective is to identify policies which may reduce the heavy human and economic costs. Volume One provides a general framework for the analysis, examines the political economy of countries at war, and provides an empirical overview of the costs of war for the poor countries worst affected by conflict. The approach is multidisciplinary: political and sociological analysis is needed in order to understand motivations and behaviour during conflict; while economic analysis is necessary to evaluate how poor people are affected. The analysis includes an investigation of how the international system, including food aid, affects the war economies, and identifies international as well as domestic policies which may reduce the human and economic costs of conflict. The subject is particularly important in view of the high incidence of wars in poor countries. Between 1950 and 1990, around 15 million deaths were caused (directly or indirectly) by war in developing countries. The end of the Cold War led to a transition to peace in many of the areas in which conflict had been fuelled by East-West antagonism, but new wars erupted. From 1989 to 1995, between 34 and 51 armed conflicts were waged each year, the great majority in poor developing countries. These volumes investigate economic and social consequences at macro-, meso- and micro- levels, aiming to identify the indirect costs (e.g. via inflation and reduced entitlements) as well as direct costs of military operations. The in-depth country case studies published in Volume Two (Afghanistan, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Uganda) are summarized in Volume One. These explore the main economic mechanisms operating during war and the policy responses of governments and international actors, showing how each can enlarge the costs and further fuel the conflicts. The large variations in this response and in the consequent costs point to domestic and international policies which can reduce the human and economic costs even before peace is restored.

I believe this is an excellent book for those looking to get in touch with the subject, its a book for those who have no idea how the system works. It has a preconceived idea, so don't look for different views -> the economic factor takes all.

                Book Description

This book is a study of the historical antecedents of Latin America's foreign debt, with a focus on Peru from 1930 to 1970. Written from the dependency theory perspective, the book attributes underdevelopment to chronic debt crises. It emphasizes the multilateral lending agencies' role in shaping Latin America's contemporary political economy, in cooperation with the U.S. government and multinational corporations and Latin America's local elites. This book presents a chapter in Peru's contemporary history targeted for students and scholars of Latin American studies, U.S. diplomatic history, international political economy, political science, and sociology of development. Contents: Preface; Introduction; Hemispheric Economic Integration and U.S. Foreign Policy: From the Good Neighbor Policy to the Alliance for Progress; Peru and Hemispheric Integration: From the Good Neighbor Policy to the Cold War; U.S.-Peru Financial Relations during the Odria Regime; Bankruptcy of Reformism: U.S.-Peru Financial Relations from Prado's Election to the Coup d'Etat of 1968; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index.

                  Book Description

Jorge Nef responds to one of the most pressing intellectual challenges of the post-Cold War era: the search for an analytical framework that will help us understand this turbulent and chaotic period in human history. His lucid and visionary analysis rests on the concept of mutual vulnerability: that in an increasingly interdependent world, global security is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain.
This second edition includes new analyses of the economic crisis in Asia, the transformation of the G-7 into the G-8, the easing of the debt crisis, and Soros’ critique of the New World Order. Data and sources are also updated, as are the discussions of conflicts in Africa, the former Yugoslavia, and central Asia.

This book is an excellent introduction to mass media in America. It is one of the few attempts around to draw together a look at the various forms of mass communications--from MTV to the movies to the Internet. While intended for the college student, it also is a good reference for anyone seeking to understand the rapidly changing media landscape in America.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not a "complete" refereance.......2007-07-23

This book is definitely helpful, but I wouldn't call it "complete". I was hoping to see information about airline ticket class codes, and the list of tour companies & cruise lines is by no means complete. I would say it's "okay" but most of the resources can easily be searched for online in the same amount of time it would take to open the book & find the correct page.

I love and it's more than I bargain for. Down side I wish there were tabs to seperate each section for easier referance. It's a must have for new home based travel agents.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Asian cases but text doesn't resonate.......2003-11-30

As a collection of text and cases, this book is a hotchpotch read. Important subjects are discussed in vague terms with timeworn buzzwords tossed into the mix. Further, it is not firmly established what is meant to be instructional about some of the cases vis-a-vis the chapter contents. One thing I appreciate about Global e-commerce is the use of Asian cases which offer the reader a global perspective. It's good to hear of developments that don't have much coverage in the US, but I only wish the chapters shared this focus.

3 out of 5 stars Good Global Case Studies!.......2003-01-11

It is difficult to find a good textbook for Global E-Commerce course. Ninety percent of the E-commerce books talk about [website],[website],[website] but nothing about companies outside of USA. Everyone treats E-commerce as American business only. This textbook, however, gives good in-depth case studies on E-commerce success stories in Hong Kong, Japan, and UK. It would be better to include more European and South American E-commerce successful war stories. The reader still needs to do his/her own research with Harvard Business Review and Cranfield University cases to gain more info. As a professor, this book allows me to add many of my own research and experience. I am using it in my course Spring 2003 semester.
