    Book Description

    'Robotham offers here a clear-headed exposé of the limits of classical liberalism in the face of world production today. His theme is both urgent and iconoclastic. There is an unusual clarity about the exposition and a drive that comes from passionate engagement combined with long experience, reading and reflection' - Keith Hart, Goldsmiths College, London

    In Culture, Society and Economy, Don Robotham examines the failure of recent social theory to grasp the problems of globalization and the emergence of corporate monopoly capital, and sets out his own argument for a radical solution.

    He argues that the neglect of economics by both cultural studies and social theory has weakened the ability to develop viable alternatives to present day capitalist globalization. With deep awareness of, and reference to, current events and contemporary trends, the author presents a detailed critique of:

    - cultural studies, in particular Stuart Hall and Paul Gilroy;

    - Giddens' theory of 'risk society';

    - Scott Lash and John Urry's 'economies of signs and space';

    - Manuel Castells' theory of 'network society'.

    The final chapters make a unique argument that the solution to the problems of globalization lies in more globalization rather than adopting an anti-globalization or 'localization' position. Don Robotham proposes more effective centralized institutions for governing the world economy, in other words - world government.

      Book Description

      Recent crises in emerging markets have been heavily driven by balance-sheet or net-worth effects. Episodes in countries as far-flung as Indonesia and Argentina have shown that exchange rate adjustments that would normally help to restore balance can be destabilizing, even catastrophic, for countries whose debts are denominated in foreign currencies. Many economists instinctually assume that developing countries allow their foreign debts to be denominated in dollars, yen, or euros because they simply don't know better.

      Presenting evidence that even emerging markets with strong policies and institutions experience this problem, Other People's Money recognizes that the situation must be attributed to more than ignorance. Instead, the contributors suggest that the problem is linked to the operation of international financial markets, which prevent countries from borrowing in their own currencies. A comprehensive analysis of the sources of this problem and its consequences, Other People's Money takes the study one step further, proposing a solution that would involve having the World Bank and regional development banks themselves borrow and lend in emerging market currencies.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars well written.......2004-09-29

      This book is a great introduction for someone with little background in economics or finance. It is also a good refresher for people that do have backgroungs in finance. I used it for the latter purpose and I still learned some things that I never previously knew. This book goes into a comprehensive examination of interest rates, fixed income securities, derivatives, and stocks. Easy to read and understand. Well written.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......2001-09-12

      It is a very good book, but might be rather basic for advanced financial people. However, it is very easy to follow, so it might be good.

          From the author: A prerequisite for the development of a viable international capital market - one that allows investors to achieve optimum asset-allocation and corporations to tap pools of capital most efficiently - is a supportive transactions infrastructure comprising the clearance, settlement, payment and custody of cross-border securities transactions. This infrastructure is the "plumbing" of the market, a structure that is composed of many different parts that must operate as a seamless and integrated manner in order to achieve maximum efficiency for the end-users of the market (the ultimate buyers and sellers of securities) and thus promote the basic objective, optimum capital allocation. Blockages and discontinuities in the utilities that comprise the transactions infrastructure make themselves felt in the form of increased transaction costs and possibly erosion of market liquidity and transparency. At present Europe, notably the EU, falls far short of having a functional transactions infrastructure for equity securities, and this will remain an important shortcoming as other dimensions of financial integration proceed and as other markets, notably in the United States, compete for European transaction flows. This paper enumerates these barriers and costs and evaluates prospects for alternative models for a high-performance European approach to this issue.

            From the supplier: Various domestic financial assets in Brazil have provided relatively liquid nonmonetary alternatives. Monthly money demand estimates which include domestic asset opportunity costs and take account of T-bill repurchase agreements in a dynamic error-correction model demonstrate the importance of domestic substitutes in explaining money holdings. Money demand appears responsive and stable. Moreover, T-bills and indexed bonds have acted as an alternative to central bank liabilities as a source of finance for government deficits. Evidence indicates that the initial financing of government deficits through bonds, bills, and other non-monetary liabilities may explain why money lags price shocks rather than vice versa. From the supplier: This paper develops a model of capital structure in a three period agency framework. Borrowers retain earnings to reduce their loan needs, which reduces their probability of default, which allows them to obtain more favorable credit terms. The model is capable of generating persistence of real shocks through financial market effects. (Printed by permission of the publisher.)

                From the supplier: When loan needs are uncertain and bankruptcy is costly, contracts resembling bank credit commitments dominate ordinary debt contracts. The fees charged on commitments reduce bankruptcy risk by smoothing out borrowers' loan payments. Reduced bankruptcy risk entitles borrowers to larger loans, thereby reducing the risk of quantity rationing. Even if commitments reduce rationing risk, monetary policy is not necessarily weaker under commitment finance. A rise in lenders' cost of funds, perhaps reflecting a monetary contraction, can reduce the expected value of a project more under a commitment than under an ordinary debt contract. Book Description

                      Leverage the power of the Internet

                      E-Business or Out of Business tells you how Oracle, a global leader in technological innovation and eTransformation, transformed itself to avoid being swallowed by the revolution it helped to launch. This guide is actually a detailed blueprint any company, including yours, can deploy, effectively using the Internet to institute its own global database, and compete successfully in the emerging digital economy. Author Mark Barrenechea, one of the executives who was central to Oracle's e-Transformation, tells you how to:

                      * Reconcile new Internet business strategies with traditional bricks-and-mortar operations
                      * Cut IT expenses and standardize business processes
                      * Interact with each customer in consistent and effective ways
                      * Accumulate customer information systematically and reconcile it with data already gathered
                      * Deploy new products and processes internally -- the moment they become available
                      * Consolidate separate databases and computer systems into a one-stop global database
                      * Coordinate multi-vendor applications approaches
                      * Integrate the automation of all business functions -- marketing, sales, service, call centers, field professionals, HR, financials, and procurement

                      2 out of 5 stars Mostly Oracle Advertising.......2002-01-26

                      Like many people I'm not totally endeared to Microsoft. However this books extreme bias towards Oracle products and negation of Microsoft and others makes me feel that the title could be renamed to: "The Oracle Guide to buying Oracle e-commerce products".

                      This fact alone make me read the factual components with a pinch of salt.

                      Sorry Guys.

                      1 out of 5 stars Academic or shamelessly self-serving?.......2001-08-17

                      In general it provides a decent overview of the the e-business revolution and how the internet has the potential to improve any companies business processes. If it had stayed at the academic/practical level it would have been an enjoyable read.

                      But it is an annoying self-aggrandizing ego-building piece for Ellison. It bashes Microsoft and Siebel as well as any other company it views as a competitor. It is obvious that Oracle wants complete domination of the database and business suite market so that Ellison can then claim he is the richest person in the world.

                      What they do not tell you is that their Oracle 11i release needs 5,000 patches and then it still does not work.

                      If you are building a database with e-business apps for your business then avoid this book and simply read Ellison's 'How we saved a billion dollars a year' on their website. Better books are: Sawhney & Zabin - 7 steps to Nirvana - Strategic insights into eBusiness transformation; e-business 2.0 - Kalakota; customer relationship management - brown; e-business & e-commerce for managers - deitel (a textbook); executives guide to e-business - Deise et al.

                      5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-06-18

                      Mark J. Barrenechea, a senior vice president for applications development at Oracle Corp., describes how to transform a company by using a range of e-business applications. He draws on Oracle's success at changing its business by using the Internet and networking to interconnect employees, customers and suppliers. Barrenechea's useful roadmap shows how your company can apply these methods to coordinate, systematize and streamline operations. He demonstrates how other companies - including General Motors, Boeing and Microsoft - use e-business networking. He writes in a straightforward style without jargon and maintains a keen focus on operations, making this book a wealth of practical knowledge. Of course, that same focus might limit the book's appeal to executives without an interest in operations technology and to other mainstream readers. We at getAbstract.com strongly recommend this educational book, and if the advice seems a little weighted toward Oracle products... well, let's not be naïve.

                      Thin Analysis. Little Information. Not very good. And, of course, the worst timing in the history of book releases, as Oracle stock collapses the same week.
