OK book, but does not worth buying.......2005-10-24

I bought this book to try and improve my personal statement for residency application. This book is straightforward, but it is too simple. You will not find any majic formulas or great examples. The examples that are there - are VERY VERY classic and long unappreciated by the RD's.

I am sorry to tell this to the author but the usual "I saw a physician saving little boy's life" or "I delivered clafs when I was 5 and that is why i want to become a OB/GYN" are no longer working succesfully to get interview. If you need examples - surf the web and then WRITE YOUR OWN PS.

ON a separate note: I thing I did agree with the author is that the use of the online automated services is probable not the best option to go thru, so the answer is (I think) better write your ow - even if it is not perfect - you can FEEL that the person wrote it, that it is not unpersonal" statement.

The Best Resource I've Encountered.......2004-09-18

I am a prospective med-school student in the application process. I have been to several bookstores, online sites, and my own college's health professions office. No guide, book, or handout has even a fraction of the depth and clarity in this book. This book guides the reader step by step towards a great resume and personal statement in a structured, workbook-like format. This strategy was particularly helpful when I wrote my personal statement. The author's years of experience shine through in the motivational and preperatory statements designed to ease the student through the stressful process. Dr. Tysinger's methods are unique and thorough, and more than just a compilation of pre-fabricated examples. I am confident my personal statement addresses issues and qualities med schools are concerned with in a fluid and easily understandable manner. This guide is one of a kind for healthcare applicants.

An extremely valuable resource for medical students........1999-02-22

Dr. Tysinger draws on his extensive experience advising medical students to share useful strategies for the match process. He offers practical tips for preparing personal statements and CVs, and gives particular attention to the process of identifying personal experiences and strengths and developing "marketing strategies" for residency interviews. Lots of examples are provided to help illustrate the variety of experiences that can be discussed in a personal statement. Dr. Tysinger also provides worksheets for the applicant to complete to aid in the writing process. Much of the advice provided will be of great help to physicians further along in their careers, as well as other health professionals. It was good to look at a book that gave examples of resumes (including CVs) and cover letters specifically for medical professionals, but some of the background information could have been more detailed. The chapters and cover letter examples went over the basics that you would find in any resume guide. The book really didn't go into much detail about how to sell yourself or how to find jobs compared to other books -- but maybe it's not supposed to. The reason I would recommend this book is that it gives more than the one token "medical" resume that more general guides have and shows examples for a wide range of medical careers, including physician.

Not So Hot for Doctors...........2001-08-30

While I must admit I did not READ the entire book, I did give it a fairly thorough skimming. As a physician preparing to start my job search I found this book to be minimally useful. The cover boldly proclaims that the book contains model resumes for DOCTORS, etc. Truth is there is not a single model resume for a physician/doctor to be found in this book. From my point of view I really wanted give the book 1 star, but I suppose there is some useful information here for nurses, technicians, and others involved in health care. The false advertising on the cover really burns that part of me next to where I usually keep my wallet. M.D.'s and D.O.'s look elsewhere!

I gained a lot of knowledge about starting a B&B from this book. The author goes into great detail about everything you need to do or think about before you start this venture. The information is just a little out-dated, but still pertinent.

Ignore the crabby reviews of this book. I really doubt such people ought to go into a public-contact home-based business!

My copy arrived from a thrift store, the original (1987) edition; I bought it mostly out of curiosity. I consult for entrepreneurs, & Barbara Notarius has come up with a book that manages to be brief yet thorough. As it was written almost 20 years ago, I am pleasantly surprised how useful it could be in answering the questions of someone who hasn't made the leap but is giving it serious thought.

Sure, it's not a turnkey guide!! You still have to enjoy people, especially strangers; you still have to have some grain of business sense (or be ready to hire someone who does); you still have to have a nice residence with some reason for guests to come looking for you; you still ought to retain an attorney to go over all the local licensing, inspection, & tax considerations.

This book is something you can read in a few evenings. It walks you through serious considerations, everything from your emotional temperament & your cleaning habits, to how well you know your own community & what you should make for breakfast -- I'll probably never have a B&B or inn, but I've swiped some of the recipes.

Of course, you ought to get the newest edition you can (it's up to its 4th) if your dead-set on opening a B&B in the near future. But if you find an older copy for a few pennies, it's a very good way to start examining everything from your furnishings to your motivations before you put too much effort or cash into something you aren't suited for.

Wanna make a living with a B&B - this book is not for you.......2001-08-20

We are looking to open a B&B that will support our family. This does not fit the author's defintion of a B&B, and this book is definitely geared toward a smaller operation. If you are looking to open a few rooms in your home to earn some extra income, this book would probably be useful.
