Book Description
The advent of low cost computation has made many previously intractable econometric models empirically feasible and computational methods are now realized as an integral part of the theory.
This book provides graduate students and researchers not only with a sound theoretical introduction to the topic, but allows the reader through an internet based interactive computing method to learn from theory to practice the different techniques discussed in the book. Among the theoretical issues presented are linear regression analysis, univariate time series modelling with some interesting extensions such as ARCH models and dimensionality reduction techniques.
The electronic version of the book including all computational possibilites can be viewed at

Book Description
Remarkable insight into the leadership culture of one of the world's largest cosmetics companies
It's no secret that Mary Kay Inc. -- home of the famous "Pink Cadillac" -- is one of the best run and most successful companies in the world, prompting Harvard professors and U.S. Government agencies to study what made the company a global phenomenon. But what many people may not realize is that Mary Kay is much more than a Pink Cadillac. While this widely recognized icon is a symbol of top performance, it stands for something greater - a way of doing business with a personal concern for people that has made Mary Kay a different kind of company. This book explains the methods and mindset that can bring the same kind of success to your organization.
More than a Pink Cadillac provides insights into a unique and extraordinarily successful business - one that grew out of, and is still founded upon, a simple set of powerful principles. It represents the first time the company has given an outside author -- Jim Underwood -- unlimited access to its employees and management. The principles he reveals in this book have already influenced the lives of hundreds of thousands of men and women around the world - and they can do the same for your organization.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational!.......2006-08-13
Mary Kay's autobiography tells of a woman with indomitable spirit and profound emotional intelligence. How she reached the pinnacle of success despite the tragedies and measly capital is a life lesson we should all learn from. I like Jim Underwood's writing style. His closeness to Mary Kay and his first-hand knowledge of her leadership style certainly provided credibility to this book. Highly recommended!
Great for All; especially MK consultants and directors........2006-05-17
I was really impressed with the work that Jim Underwood put forth to create this woderful book. One of the most inspiring things for me is the fact that he shares insights that I didn't know about the company that I am proud to represent. I left each reading session with an added sense of pride and inspiration.
More Than a Pink Cadillac...is a great tool for sharing with prospective team members and their spouses/spices as it comes from a person who doesn't represent MK Inc and shows how much corporate does care about those who represent MK in the field.
This book changed my life!.......2006-03-21
When I decided to start my own business, my goals were lofty and to the average person unattainable. Many people in my life were unconvinced that I could accomplish them. Desperate to grown personally, I began working my way through self-help books and the like. By mistake I picked up MORE THAN A PINK CADILLAC" and my life was forever better. Jim Underwood offers us a look into the life of a remarakable woman who refused to let anyone hold her back. Not only does this book share her personal/professional journey, it shares the journey's of women just like myself. It's not just about business, it's about people. It reminds us that this world is nothing without the people in it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought they couldn't make it work...no matter what "it" is. Pure inspiration!
THE book for awesome leaders.......2004-08-25
I cannot say enough great things about this book. Mary Kay Cosmetics is truly a wonderful company and Mary Kay Ash was a very inspiring businesswoman. Even for those people not in leadership positions, this is still a fantastic book. This exceeded my expectations. I was very thrilled with my purchase.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-08
Mary Kay, Inc., is perhaps best known for two things: the cult of personality surrounding its founder, Mary Kay Ash, and the fact that it rewards successful salespeople with pink Cadillacs. In this illuminating book, management expert Jim Underwood delves into the guiding principles of Mary Kay, Inc.'s daily operations, which remain, 40 years later, true to Ash's founding vision. Countries or corporations founded by a charismatic leader often sag or sink when that leader inevitably steps down. Mary Kay's leadership was unique in that she built a solid foundation for the company so it could continue without her day-to-day guidance. This corporate biography represents the first time the privately owned company allowed an outsider complete access to its managers and employees, enabling Underwood to persuasively illustrate nine leadership rules with testimonies from members of the "Mary Kay family." We recommend this to anyone who aspires to leadership. Mary Kay may look fluffy, but it's all about the firm.

Customer Reviews:
Time saver for small group leaders.......2007-05-12
I teach a small group Bible study that has been meeting for several years. Since I have a graduate degree in theology, I usually write my own curriculum. However, recently I have been using this book as the basis for our studies. It is very well put together;providing more than enough information for my students, without being pedantic and including interesting discussion topics. My students (most of whom are 65 and older) LOVE the material. They keep asking for more. They are so engaged with it that I have a hard time ending the group discussions when our meeting time is up.
My only negative comment is that the web addresses need to be updated as some are no longer valid. Also the accompanying PowerPoint presentation (also a web address) was hard to find. Other that those minor points, I love the book-both for my own enjoyment and as a group curriculum.
Great..........2004-03-06
This book was great for learning the basics. Now that I have a better understanding of the origination, and occurances regarding the christian church over the years, I now feel better equipped to read a more thorough account of these happenings from another author. This book sets up a wonderful timeline of events throughout history and has a great way of presenting facts via various visual aids, such as pictures, charts, and subtitles... all in all, very user friendly. :)
from a teacher's standpoint.......2002-10-03
I have used this book to teach one class of adults and will be using it in a few months to teach another class. They really enjoyed it. It is not overwhelming and yet hits most of the highlights of our "family" history. The conversational style keeps it from being boring and it is on a level that one does not have to have a college degree to understand. As with any study, it is always a good thing to undergird, support, and illustrate with other resources. If this is done, it balances any weaknesses found in the book's material. For instance, if a central character is not covered in depth enough, or even not at all, just add material to round it out. Our church is using it now for both teens and adults. Would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent for Teaching.......2001-06-13
I've scanned Christian History Made Easy by Timothy Paul Jones. Because it provides quizes, leader's guides, and refers to additonal information at web sites, the book can easily be used for courses in Christian History. Jones includes many pictures, and Did you know? articles on the borders of each page. The book content and format makes you want to read it. It's hard to put down!
WOW!.......2001-02-28
I believe that this book is written by someone who knows what he is doing. The author not only managed to fill this book with information, but also with fun. It does not only have feeling in it, but also character. It is certain to be a favorite in the christain classroom, but it can also be found on a bookshelves along with some of the greater novels. Surely this is a book that can only be second to the Bible itself.

Customer Reviews:
A BP book that doesn't focus on small business financing. Refreshing to read it........2006-09-01
Informative, well done, and well written. A great book to add to a library of entrepreneurial tomes. The author seems to know his stuff, and he is very even-handed when it comes to presenting the subject matter. Good business plans are the ones that are beaten up and re-written after tough questions are asked by their authors, potential investors, business partners, and customers. A good business plan is a living document that changes as time moves forward - even after the business has been started.
Most of the books that I have read on business plans are geared toward helping their readers put together a business plan in order to qualify for a bank loan for start-up money. While the author here does that as well, he also lets his readers know that a business plan can be written in order to create a road map to success when starting a business, when seeking financing for business growth, when seeking working capital for a business, when seeking a business partner, or when seeking capital for an equipment loan.
The message is that the writer of a business plan should concentrate on why the business will provide a compelling solution to a significant problem, and why the new company will be successful instead of other companies. The author points out that a writer of a business plan should read analysts' reports, attend trade shows, understand the competition, and get to know potential customers BEFORE she writes the plan.
My favorite part of the book was the section where the author covers what is involved in doing market research. He provides some resources to use and some how-to's on what to do when doing one's research. It is pointed out that industry analysis is critical in preparing a sound business plan. An industry on the rise means the new business has potential. An industry going down hill is probably one in which you don't want to start a business. See the Industry Analysis Worksheet at page 119 of the book.
The book is broken into 4 sections: (1) Before writing your plan, (2) Writing your plan, (3) Enhancing your plan, and (4) Six sample business plans. See the Table of Contents to see a more in depth outline of the book and the titles for the six sample plans.
I would have liked the book better if the sample business plans had not been so clean. They were well done, and well-written, but didn't really make me feel like I wanted to use any one of them to help start a business. Maybe they needed a little more personal feeling or reasoning in them? I don't know. But they do not detract from the book. They help it.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to prepare a business plan. 5 stars!

SMMGR.......2006-07-10
This book is very well written. Lots of good information to assist the start-up company and/or potential new business owner.
If someone is contemplating starting a business and they dont have time to attend a week long seminar on "How to Start a Business" put on by the Small Business Association, this is a very informative book. The book covers everything in the SBA Seminar. Mr. Davis draws nicely from his personal experience which lends additional interest to his subject.

I purchased this book quite a few years ago and I am still using it today. In fact, my daughter is getting married and I am getting her this book so she will be as organized as her mother! It was so easy to organize everything and I can find what I am looking for in an instant. This book tells you what catagory to file your document, when to save in archives and when something can be tossed away. I wish that I could give this book ****** !
Thanks for getting me organized........1999-09-24
The system you wrote is fantastic. I have been rifeing through drawers, boxes, and paper for years. I really didn't think there was a way. But there is. Thank you very much, Mary Martin. I really didn't think it was possible.
It's a terrific help to get me organized........1999-05-25
I wish I had gotten this book sooner. I have always been a slave to the paper tiger. The thing I like about this method is that it not only showed me what is important to hold on to and where to speciffically file things....but it also shows what NOT to keep and WHEN to throw it away. It sounds simple and IT IS! Thank you to the Martins for a great system.
