Book Description
The purpose of Basics of Mortgage-Backed Securities is to provide readers with a fundamental understanding of mortgage securities as an integral part of investment in fixed-income securities. The second edition of this MBS classic provides the latest information on the U.S. residential mortgage market, adjustable-rate mortgages and mortgage pass-throughs, relative value analyses and performance characteristics.
Dr. James Hu discusses the major changes within the mortgage market that may affect the fundamentals of mortgage securities. Some of these are: the recovery of the REMIC market after its collapse; the flourish of private-label securities; the growth of equity loan-backed securities and its establishment as a member of the fixed-income securities family. Also included are additional historical data for all exhibits. Mortgage pre-payment, dollar rolls, and private-label mortgage-backed securities are also addressed.
Customer Reviews:
Great intro...but don't read it by itself if you want to really understand this subject.......2006-12-13
This book was a great introduction to the basics of mortgage-backed securities, exactly as the title professes. It is loaded with graphs and tables to help readers understand the quantitative sections.
If you really want to understand this subject though, read Fabozzi and Modigliani's "Mortgage and Mortgage-Backed Securities Markets" as well as (or even in lieu of) this book. It dates back to the 80s, but together with this book you will have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, and you can easily understand recent developments.
Good Overview of Mortgage Backed Securities.......2005-11-24
Anyone interested in learning the basics of MBS will benefit from this book.
Author Dr. Joseph Hu does a fine job of examining the following topics in 12 chapters: residential mortgages, US residential mortgage market, pass-throughs, prepayment, basic mortgage math, ARMs, multiclass pass-throughs, private labels, HELOC-backed securities, dollar rolls, relative value analysis and historical performance of MBS.
Some data is dated (1990's). Then again, the book has a 2001 copyright. Nevertheless, the fundamental concepts of MBS are comfortably examined in 168 pages.
Hu did a fine job elaborating on mortgage prepayment and the primary reasons for it (refinancing and housing turnover). I also benefited from Chapter 7's focus on multi-class pass throughs, where CMOs, PACs, Floaters, IOs and POs are briefly discussed.
There are more illustrative graphs than confusing formulas in this book. All in all, I found "Basics of Mortgage-Backed Securities" to be quite readable. Overall, I give this book a 3 1/2 star rating. Readers interested in getting much more detail about MBS should consider "Salomon Smith Barneys Guide to Mortgage Backed and Asset Backed Securities" (Hayre).
Excellent primer on MBS.......2005-10-07
Hu's book is an excellent primer on mortgage-backed securities from both the supply and demand sides. While I must confess I was quickly swamped by the math (through no fault of Dr. Hu's, perhaps a workshop would have been a better way for me to learn about WACs and WAMs) I got the gist of the material.
Although the publication date is 2001, most of the examples and graphs are as of the mid-90s. It would be great to see a 3rd edition, especially discussing the more exotic mortgage instruments that have come on the market.
Great Intro. - gets to the point........2000-08-02
This is the best introduction, giving a brief yet broad coverage to an important market. In just 144 pages Hu covers the the important points. The Mortgage Backed Security market, at over 2 trillion dollars, will soon exceed the US treasury market as the largest and most liquid bond market. Nevertheless, this market is still viewed as highly specialized due to the complications in security structure and prepayment optionality. Hu explains these complications clearly giving the reader confidence to enter this market.

It’s a ‘how-to’ book with a difference, anecdotal, full of practical, step-by-step advice, with warnings about pitfalls -- a buyer’s hotel guide for dummies! Reading this book will give you practical insights into what it is really like to own a small hotel and enable you to decide whether running a small hotel is for you.
Customer Reviews:
How true this book is!.......2002-12-03
I enjoyed reading this book very much and I congratulate the author on a job well done and to perfection.. I too owned a hotel back in the 50's that served breakfast, lunch and dinner and of course the food being much different in the States then over seas.. This book brought back a lot of memories for me..The hotel was a great deal of work but it had it's good times too..Joanne Muller tells it the way it is.. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations that she and her husband found them selves in and that would trigger a memory of my own..I could have read the book a lot faster then I did but I was having to much fun with it..
There are some people that you come across that are so easy to please but then again, there are some that you bend over backwards for and you still can't make them happy..
Knowing what I know now I think I would have given it a little more thought before getting into the business, What about you Joanne?..Though you did take a lot of your time to give lots of information for some one to get started in this business..
I want to tell you Joanne, you helped to bring back some of those memories and I want to thank you for that.. I find myself laughing even now that I've finished the book..Every once in a while , one of those memories creeps in and makes me laugh..The book was great!
Very Informative and Definitely Funny!.......2002-11-16
One thing is for sure, no one could have written a book like this and not have gone through it! This author has pretty much detailed everything someone should know and do in order to run a B&B or a small hotel.
I had lots of fun reading this book and I'm not looking to run a business either! But I will say this, in just the first few chapters the author had me wanting to have a B&B of my own! She really has taken the time to give you all kinds of information.
Joanne Muller will keep you in stitches, laughing with all the little incidences that happened to her and her husband as examples of what to do and not to do. She explains it so well that you can actually picture it in your mind.
I like watching shows on television that are serious but have funny little skits and I want to tell you that this book would make a wonderfully funny show.
So whether you're seriously looking for information on the how's to run this sort of business or just looking to read something light hearted and humorous, this is the book for you. Even the little cartoon sketches in the book will definitely put a smile on your face. Actually some of them had me laughing out loud!
Thank you Joanne for sharing your knowledge and experiences with all of us. It's a very good read!
Fawlty Towers at its best!.......2001-11-02
So You Want to Buy a Small Hotel is a realistic, anecdotal 'how-to' guide to the hands-on day-to-day running of a small hotel or guest house based on the author's personal experience in the Scottish Borders.
So You Want to Buy a Small Hotel is written with humour and tells it like it is, warts and all, the good things and the nightmares about running a hotel - the dream (with the nightmares!) lived for 11 years at a small hotel or guest house in the Scottish Borders. It's a 'how-to' book with a difference, anecdotal, full of practical, step-by-step advice, with warnings about pitfalls -- a buyer's hotel guide for dummies! Reading this book will give you practical insights into what it is really like to own a small hotel and enable you to decide whether running a small hotel is for you. The cartoon illustrations by Fred Ohnewald, a previous guest at the hotel from Germany, enhance the reading pleasure by highlighting some of the farcical situations described by the author. One illustration aptly illustrates the owner, an ex-university professor with three doctorates, serving breakfast with a 'balloon head' - a result of imbibing the liberal gifts of schnapps from his German guest the night before.
There were good times and bad times, and the good times outweigh the bad - though the few guests who left a bitter taste on the memory seemed to have left an overriding impression of a hotel not unlike Fawlty Towers. Indeed, the ex-owners confess that only now, after the sale of the hotel, can they enjoy the tortures and crises of Basil Fawlty, for at the time they were too close to reality!
Want to buy and run a small hotel? Sure, it's great - go for it! But you just may want to think again after reading this guide.

Simple, Great Examples.......2005-08-18
The books is organized into small chapters with great example resumes and a list of key words. It allow you to improve you IT resume in a short amount of time and even have suggestion on where to start if you are new to IT.
The Best, don't look further.......2005-01-11
I read this book so fast, the way it was written was so interesting and easy, evey single question I had in mind was answered, nothing is left! I loved the book, unfortunately I cannot get the Ace the IT INTERVIEW book, because it is not available in my area, but I would definetly the interview book too! by the way there is a very good chapter about interview in this book!
four little things i hated about this book:
- much more of network than software development ! but it is ok coz most careers are in Network administration.
- in a resume there was: Modem Software!!, this is called Browser...!
- adding Norton AntiVirus in an IT resume is something stupid!
- PHP and C-Sharp: top programming lanuges not mentioned in the book!
In the market for an IT job? Get this book!.......2004-12-28
This book's objective is to land you an interview. Before reading this book I could only say I had 1 maybe 2 interviews total in a period of a few months. After reading this book and using some of its suggestions I have had several more.
Overall I'd rate it a 4.8 since I feel that Paula is a bit too forward with some of her suggestions (for example closing statements on cover letters that are a bit overboard imo).
But that's my only complaint =)
No matter your position in life be it a freshout of college or an experienced IT vet who's looking for something different, this book will pay for itself many times over.
Ace the IT Resume!.......2004-01-15
This book is excellent!!! If you think your resume is good, think again. Follow the steps in this book and you'll see a totally new person. I used it in conjunction with Ace the IT Job Interview and it got me a job.
Absolutely Horrifying!.......2003-11-24
I do not know where these women got their credentials, but they are WAY off the mark! DO NOT LIE ON YOUR RESUME! No matter what this book recommends! For instance, the authors state: "If your offical title is Tech Level I, you might be responsible for database administration, PC support, and webmaster duties. If you're hoping to move into DBA, list 'database administrator' as the job title and as the first bullet describe your responsibilities in this function." Wrong, wrong, wrong! As a hiring manager and interviewer, if I discover you lied about your job title, especially when you were a Tech I and you claimed to be a DBA, I will wonder what else you lied about. And believe me, I'll find out when I call your previous employers to verify your employment history. No, instead, when in this situation, downplay, emphasize the job title you want, and even omit your job titles, and use the opportunity to emphasize your skills. That way, even if you don't have the right job title, you can demonstrate to me that it doesn't matter. But NEVER, EVER lie or deliberately mislead anyone. Then they'll just feel like you were trying to trick them, which is NOT very impressive.

Finally, in one place this book collects and categorizes the wealth of resources on the Internet to help people find jobs, and employers find people. Waste of money.......2003-01-16
I bought this book hoping it would help me with my resume. The example resumes are terrible. You can get better resume writing advice for free from many university career center websites.
nothing but useless examples!.......2001-10-17
Avoid this book. It contains nothing but the most basic resume writing tips, and at that, they are very outdated. Exerpt: "Though there may be instances where you deliver your resume in person, usually you send it through the mail." Have any of you actually mailed your resume out, at least before this economic setback? No, of course we've been emailing them for years. The 20 pages of this book (1/8 of the total) that actually talk about resume tips are very similar, as if the only reason this book has a copyright in 2000 is for the dates on the sample resumes - the rest is straight out of the 80's.
I expect much more from a book targetted for engineers. This MIGHT be appropriate for much less technical positions.
