The appendixes in the back contain an extensive list of common financial equations and a helpful bibliography of business books for further reading. An ideal guide for everyone from business school students to homeowners taking out a mortgage, 1001 Financial Words You Need to Know is the perfect vocabulary-building companion to the complex world of money and finance.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition to My Shelf.......2007-05-25

David Bach's writing style is clear, direct and informative. I thought this book delivered exactly what the title represented plus a little more. I refer to it frequently while reading other investment books. I also found his lists of money mistakes people make and the steps for retirement planning helpful. If you are new to investing and looking for a reference book, this is the best I've found.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL.......2006-01-05

I was a fan of David Bach and his financial perspective, but after anxiously awaiting this book's arrival I was sorely disappointed. It's a dictionary plain and simple with a couple of excerpts from his best-selling books. This does not help explain these financial terms, although I know this isn't true, most people should know 99% of the terms. The other 1% are for people involved in corporate takeovers (and I doubt they are the target audience.) This is a rip off and condescending. I know ATM stands for Automatic Teller Machine and I don't need to know the words orgin. I expected to gain a more well-rounded knowledge of how to apply these terms in my own life, more situational stories. It is simply a dictionary with no discernable use.

5 out of 5 stars Workplace writers talk about what they learn.......2006-11-14

This book is easy to read. It is full of direct quotes: young writers talk about what it takes to write well in a nonprofit environment, where success depends on tact, grace, and knowing the audience. Executive Director Mei talks about the genres and techniques that young writers must learn. There are before-and-after examples. As a professional teacher of business writing, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what writing is really like after you graduate from college and get that first job in a service or nonprofit business.

1 out of 5 stars A very tough read.......2005-11-14

Unless you are a writing student or someone researching writing, then you should avoid this book. It's very slow and very analytical, purely for hard-core research addicts. This book was read as a college text because there was not a more readily-available text book. This text does not teach one how to write better, it simply presents a research project done regarding the progress of writing styles of four women working in a non-profit organization.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Traing Tool.......2007-07-21

This book covers all of the details that are so often left out while training waitstaff and associated restaurant employees. We use it extensively for initial training and reference.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Use.......2006-06-16

Opening a dining establishment is complex. There are many different things that need to be taken into consideration from food costs to training of employees. For those who have never had a restaurant before, the training of employees could be a little intimidating, especially when it comes to those who interact with the customers and whose service could make or break the business, the wait staff. This book takes the bewilderment out of hiring and training these very important people.

The book is comprehensive and follows a logical pattern which eases the reader into the business almost effortlessly. It is an all inclusive book which details different jobs which make up the wait staff from hosting to bussing. Most of the book is centered on service of the tables though. It explains everything from how to set the table to presenting the check at the end of the meal.

There is a special section on how to deal with the youngest of the customers as well as important issues which the customer does not see such as side work and dealing with customer complaints and the difficult customer. There are even tips on laws that regulate the industry such as alcohol and IRS laws. As with any other job in the restaurant, safety and sanitation is also a very important part. Taking the complexity out of hiring and training of these employees is bound to help everyone out.

5 out of 5 stars Also in Spanish.......2005-07-14

Just a note to say this book is also published in Spanish for students and staff members

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide!.......2004-10-26

Inman Southwest Regional Food Specialist U.S. Food and Drug Administration The HACCP Food Safety Manual Developed for NASA in the 1960s, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) represents a logical step forward in food safety management. Food safety issues have become so complex that traditional attention to cleanliness and maintenance is not enough. HACCP, the new tool to enhance food safety management, looks at food preparation step by step to identify the root causes of potential problems and to establish corrective or control measures. This food safety approach is being adopted by the USDA, FDA, and numerous state and local health departments. It is advocated by the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Fund, AFC Colorado Chefs de Cuisine, and the American Dietetic Association, and is being utilized effectively by such major chains as General Mills and Taco Bell. It is concise and well layed out so you can easily find detailed information on wines, sauces, cocktails, cooking methods etc. The only problem is that there is that most items in the book are not explained in depth, but then again its a reference.

Salmonella, mad cow disease, pesticides-just how safe is the food we eat? This book is packed with information about current and historical issues in food safety. The laws, the facts, and figures are backed up with real-life events: Upton Sinclair's 1906 expose of the meat packing industry, The Jungle, led to the Beef Inspection Bill, but 90 years later 732 people were poisoned and 4 children died after they ate tainted beef.

From biographies to a directory of organizations and resources, this comprehensive introduction to the subject is also an excellent guide to further study.

Barbara Bailey Reinhold, director of career development and adjunct professor of psychology at Smith College, believes factors ranging from ever-escalating workloads to the constant threat of downsizing may actually be poisoning employment environments and causing us to fall ill. I didn't find this book very helpful. The author seems to recommend leaving your job more often than I expected. . . if I wanted to do that, I wouldn't be reading this book. I wanted to learn how to FIX the problems that are there.

3 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book.......2002-02-21

The Author definitely has a deep understanding of the negative effects that work can have on your health. I particularly liked the idea of thinking of your career as a collage rather than a photo (i.e., designing a composite career).

I was distracted by all the feminist references. For example, "Bobbie" feels she has disappointed her family because they expected a boy. The Author explains that women are treated like second class citizens despite being "better students and more productive employees than men" and that women have been told all their lives that they are "less valued and valuable than their brothers". The book also tells the sad tale of "Marianne", a closeted lesbian, and her "homophobic VP".

All of that may be true, but it doesn't relate to the topic of overcoming burnout and revitalizing your career. The book was useful, but would have been better if the Author had stayed on-topic.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary resource - Used as required text for courses.......2001-03-02

Toxic Work is a wonderful resource. I have used the book as a required text for both my graduate level Managment Training and Development and Human Resource Management courses. My students, without exception, rave about the content. Dr. Reinhold's humor and insight have provided me and over 100 of my students with a great set of career problem solving tools and a teriffic bibliography. I keep hoping that there will be a sequel ... perhaps Toxic Two. Keep them comming.

5 out of 5 stars Work is Less Toxic Now.......2000-02-29

Toxic Work is the first reference book in the career section which has a bibliography worth reading. The book not only does all the work for you by collecting and organizing relevent resources, but provides a wealth of examples. The author doesn't give pat answers, but takes the reader through the problem-solving process. I found the book empowering because it provides the structure and information I needed to generate a successful game plan. I became proactive, and am happily employed at the same job that sent me to the book store looking for an escape.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting point for disatisfied workers.......1998-08-04

TOXIC WORK is broken down into two sections. The first section is devoted to "Recognizing and Managing Toxic Work" while the second is devoted to "Making Major Changes: Designing a Nontoxic Life." Overall, the book surveys the major topics of career disatisfaction with an eye towards recognizing when such disatisfaction causes physical affects. It does not get very deep into possible solutions. Instead, the author prefers to continually recommend that anything more in-depth requires professional counselling. On the contrary, I kept feeling the book could have gone further and that it stopped just when things were getting juicy. I also felt that it was padded with a lot extra examples. Despite these flaws, I consider it to be a good tool to help anyone who is currently less that satisfied with their career. It covers such a broad range of issues that everyone should be able to come away from it with some positive ideas about what to do next an! d some new insights about themselves and their career.
