this is a solid, almost academic, handbook. it's points you toward the things you need to figure out but you'll still need to get additional information on your local regulations. personnaly, it discouraged me from opening a buisness at this time.

The Restaurant Manager's Handbook is a no-nonsense, coverall manual for the food establishment industry. It's the essence of a successful handbook-no jokes, parables, and preachy lectures, just the facts. If you delve into the heal-thy index for fault, you'll abruptly bump into a page number for an answer, and if you're currently running a restaurant and afraid to appear inadequate, you can load the handy CD-ROM and pretend you're checking your e-mail while figur-ing out the monthly audit procedures or why the beer is flat. I'm not kidding. The next time your favorite kitchen runs short of the daily special or closes down for a lack of permit, serve them a copy of this great reference book.

Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

    Description:
In this study, we perform a quantitative assessment of the role of money as an indicator variable for monetary policy in the euro area. We document the magnitude of revisions to euro area-wide data on output, prices, and money, and find that monetary aggregates have a potentially significant role in providing information about current real output. We then proceed to analyze the information content of money in a forward-looking model in which monetary policy is optimally determined subject to incomplete information about the true state of the economy. We show that monetary aggregates may have substantial information content in an environment with high variability of output measurement errors, low variability of money demand shocks, and a strong contemporaneous linkage between money demand and real output. As a practical matter, however, we conclude that money has fairly limited information content as an indicator of contemporaneous aggregate demand in the euro area.

    Book Description

Does Europe still have a choice? The Euro is heavily promoted as a way to reduce unemployment and provide more freedom. But is the outcome so certain? It is high time for an economist, independent minded and free from special interests, to sound the alarm. Jean-Jacques Rosa denounces the creation of the European single currency as Europe's worst mistake since the deflationary policy of the 1920s, which turned the 1929 stock market crash into a decade of tragedy. In coming to this judgement, Jean-Jacques Rosa applies logic, the truths of everyday existence, human experience, and statistical proof. Is the Euro really just the political will to melt the European nations into one state? Why- when the right size for today's nations would be infinitely more modest? Against the trend of intellectual conformity, the timidity of the elites, and the knee- jerk approbation of Franco-German integration, Jean-Jacques Rosa, often polemical, suggests it's time to escape from this impasse -- from the Euro.

4 out of 5 stars Convincing demolition of the case for the euro.......2002-04-27

This critical study of the euro, written by a respected French economist, should make sense to every trade union member. Throughout the eurozone, growth is weak, unemployment high and rising, and investment stagnant. Yet society needs full employment: without it, we cannot end all its by-products, poverty, crime, corruption, bad health, illiteracy, lack of skills. When workers are in work, they can prevent all these evils.
Rosa shows that unemployment is high because macro-economic policy, not Brownýs micro, supply-side, fiddling, decides employment levels, and the European Union has the wrong macro policy. Euro-fundamentalists, including the Labour Government, cling to a fixed overvalued currency - pound or euro - cutting real wages, revenues and growth, and raising unemployment. The resulting excessive interest rates deflate the real economy of production and inflate the casino economy of speculation.
In the 1930s, France clung to the Gold Standard and suffered hugely; Britain floated the pound, and did better. In the 1990s, countries like Britain that left the ERM grew faster and had lower inflation than France, which stayed in.
Capitalists argue that welfare spending and ýlabour market inflexibilityý cause permanent ýstructuralý unemployment, so you can only increase growth by raising unemployment enough to cut wages. Rosa demolishes this ýEurosclerosisý argument. He shows that in 1989, the last year before the Maastricht Treatyýs monetarism was imposed, the French economy grew by 4%, although welfare payments and the labour market stayed the same.
We need a policy for growth, of floating exchange rates and cutting short-term interest rates down to zero. The OECD estimates that in France, for instance, cutting exchange rates would add 2% growth, and cutting 2% interest rates by 2% would add 0.5% growth, creating 320,000 jobs a year.
Rosa notes that the euro is Europeýs worst mistake since deflationary policy turned the 1929 crisis into a decade of depression. He stresses that the euroýs economic failings donýt bother the EUýs leaders, because they expressly conceived it as an ýeconomicý way to lock us into the single European state, since they know they could never do it through winning our democratic consent.

5 out of 5 stars No Error Here!.......2000-05-30

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent - The author provides the reader with an informative insight into why the EU is making a big mistake by adopting the Euro. The EU is clearly not an optimal single currency area yet political correctness has ruled the day. Without a strong political union the Euro is heading for failure and with a strong political union the EU is heading for the inefficiencies most smart multinational companies have long since abandoned. The Euro could become a perfect example of a good thing (free trade) taken too far by the feel good politics of the left trying to strong arm the rest of the world away from the dollar. This book is a must read for all interested in the Euro, but make sure you're not in a rush as the translation from the French can leave you scratching your head at times.

      Description:
Eurocurrency deposit rates for Germany, Japan, the UK and the US are used to investigate term structure linkages over the 1979-85 and 1986-01 periods. A single common trend drives the term structure in each country, with 1-month rates generally having little or no influence in setting the long-term trend. Cointegration and common factor analyses based on the intracurrency common factors suggest weaker integration of economic fundamentals following the Plaza Accord in 1986. However, using a 10-year moving window to examine the 1986-01 period, similar tests show that integration increased between the 1986-95 and 1988-97 periods, but declined again by 1992-01.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Great book - multimedia material a joke.......2002-03-16

I much enjoyed the book that is part of the package. As usual with the authors, I found that the book was concise, to the point, very pedogical and clear. I liked the self-review exercises at the end of each chapter as well.

I also enjoyed the table of content of the book that was obviously designed for programmer (so many introduction xml book avoid all useful topics - DOM, SAX etc). The "bonus" chapters (server-side programming with Java etc) while not useless, sounded a bit like they were there only to fill the book but never mind.

I was very disappointed on the other hand by the CD ROM that came with the book. It only features the text of the book in unattractive format and offer only scant interactive or multimedia material (ok there is an interactive quizz). Reading the publisher description, I had come to expect an actually interactive CD ROM. For this reason, while I would warmly recommend the book as an introduction to XML (one of the best around, with Beginning XML from WROX) I would advice for buying the book alone, not the course package.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong concept, Good Book.......2002-01-25

This is a worst concept. The book is good. That's why 2 stars. For the book, alone, I would have given 4 stars. I wouldn't waste my money for any item in this series. Just buy the book.

3 out of 5 stars Enables Learning XML Fast.......2001-09-08

The book/CD is very nice for learning XML fast, you can run many of the examples as you go through the material when using the CD, which enables you to learn it faster. The book and CD are not bogged down with useless detail (like the Wrox "Professional XML" book is). It's pretty straight to the point, but sometimes you need to go to other sources to fully understand or get more details.
My only complaint is from description, I expected video presentations and great multimedia capabilities. The multimedia is mostly just explanations of sample code line by line and it is all audio, no video. Really you pay alot of extra money for a CD that has the same exact information as the book, so you may want to save some money and just by the book.

4 out of 5 stars First Anniversary Retrospective.......2004-02-03

Yesterday my staff and I celebrated the one year anniversary of my restaurant. The Restaurant Start-Up Guide was an integral part of my planning process, and I have recommended it to three other friends this year who are starting their own businesses. The month-by-month approach was not only motivating; it lent structure to a sometimes overwhelmingly complicated process. My previous experience was in hands-on restaurant management. The Start-Up Guide taught me the business basics and directed me to other sources of information I needed to get started. I will continue to recommend it to others in the future.

          1 out of 5 stars College professors writing a restaurant start-up book.......2001-05-23

This book is absolutely useless other than for academic interest. If you read the bios of the authors carefully they have never started or run a restaurant and that reflects the writing. The whole book is about marketing, planning, spreadsheets; something that would be taught in a college classroom. I really wasted my money on this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource that is honest about the industry........1999-07-29

I'm now reading this book for the second time. The step by step guide is in a prudent timeline and very comprehensive. The authors add in enough anecdotes and survey results from succesful restauranteurs to keep the text interesting. The authors pay alot of attention to making sure readers really want to get into this business.
