    Book Description

In The Political Economy of Japanese Monetary Policy, Cargill, Hutchison, and Takatoshi investigate the formulation and execution of monetary and financial policies in Japan within a broad technical, political, and institutional context. Their emphasis is on the period since the collapse of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates in the early 1970s, and on the effects of policies and institutions in shaping the modern Japanese economy. The authors present basic themes and recent developments, as well as their own research findings. They also review and integrate the large literature in the area. They consider theoretical arguments and empirical evidence for each topic discussed.

Topics covered include Japan's low inflation record (despite the central bank's lack of formal independence from the government); politically motivated business cycles and the timing of elections; exchange rate policy and international policy coordination; the historical development of central banking; Japan's "bubble economy" of the 1980s; and the causes, magnitude, and regulatory responses to Japan's banking and financial crisis of the 1990s.

      Book Description

What brought about a financial crisis in the "miracle" economies of Asia? What went wrong with financial reform in Asia? What can the developing countries of the world learn from the reform experiences in Asia?
Financial Liberalization and the Economic Crisis in Asia analyses how financial liberalization was undertaken in eight Asian countries and how it might be linked to the subsequent crises. The country studies focus on China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand.

1 out of 5 stars 20 years later . . .and Slawson has proved to be all wrong.......2000-01-31

This is the book that chased Professor Slawson out of economics. It was universally panned when it came out, and today, from the vantage point of 20 years later, we know with certainty why. Inflation, which struck terror into the hearts of millions during the 1970's, could only be cured by draconian wage and price controls, Slawson told us. Of course, from the perspective of 20 years, we can now say that this was not needed at all. More disturbing is how the author wants to use taxation in an almost punitive way. For example, Slawson would virtually abolish all inherited wealth because he believes it's unfair to have money if you don't work. Yet, earlier in the book, he quotes Studs Terkel in Working, and tells us most people hate their jobs. So I guess Slawson wants everyone to be miserable. Everyone must work in miserable jobs. And what about the family farm or the family business? Why should the taxman take away the inherited family farm? All I can figure is Slawson must not have any kids because no father could wish such a future on his children.

            Book Description

Bringing together in one volume the most important writings of Andrew Leyshon and Nigel Thrift on money and finance, including the unpublished classic "Sexy-Greedy", this collection examines the economic, social and cultural manifestations that make up the multiple vision of money. Since the mid-1980s, attention to the role played by money and finance in the processes of social and economic change has become more pervasive across the social sciences. The documentation of monetary and financial matters reflect growing concern with the "power of money" and the ways in which this power has the force to influence the conduct of social and economic life across a range of geographical scales. Money/Space describes the economy of international money, linking it with the distribution of social power. It looks at some of the ways in which this world of money, exemplified by finance capital and financial markets, is discursively constituted through particular social-cultural practices. Money, it seems, is the great God of our age. It is also an economy, a sociology, an anthropology and a geography. Linking money with the emergent patterns of global spatial order, this collection examines the restructuring of financial markets in a range of spatial scales: global, national and local.

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1998-10-12

The information on consulting firms just comes from the consulting firms themselves. I found the same info on the firms' Web sites. I found the VaultReports.com book on consulting firms to be much better, since it gave insider information direct from employees. There are other good books out there, too.

                    1 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......1998-06-08

All of the first-hand experiences which led me to purchase this book are crammed into just nineteen pages. The remainder of the book is full of very brief summaries of a zillion consultancies most of which I had never heard of. I got one page on McKinsey, 1 1/2 pages on BCG and two pages on Bain. That works out to about $3 per useful page.

                          Book Description

The primary audience for this report is managers involved with the highest levels of the strategic planning process, and consultants who help their clients with this task. The user will not only benefit from the hundreds of hours that went into the methodology and its application, but also from its alternative perspective on strategic planning in Canada.

This report helps executives evaluate strategic investment and entry alternatives in Canada. In order to evaluate Canada, Icon Group International, Inc. draws on a methodology developed by Professor Philip Parker at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. The methodology decomposes a country's strategic potential along two key dimensions: (1) latent demand, and (2) accessibility. A country may have very high latent demand, yet have low accessibility, making it a less attractive market than many smaller potential countries having higher levels of accessibility.

This report provides a strategic profile of Canada along these lines. Throughout the discussion, literally hundreds of statistics on Canada are benchmarked against regional and global averages. The reader can thus quickly understand where Canada fits into the regional and global perspective. The report first investigates the economic fundamentals affecting Canada. These fundamentals are the source for Canada's latent demand. Then, the subsequent chapters detail Canada's accessibility. This evaluation covers a number of entry alternatives, including export strategies, and local direct investment strategies. If a firm decides to have a local presence in Canada, this requires a strategic understanding of local business conditions. The conditions investigated in this report include local marketing (advertising, distribution, pricing issues) and entry strategies (opening an office, joint venturing, etc.), as well as human resources management (labor laws, costs, regulations). Because local presence can...

                              Book Description

In less than five minutes, you can get a rough valuation of your firm (or any other A/E or environmental firm)- backed by eight years and 485 pages of documented valuation research. This book was the first- and is still the only- source of reliable comparative data on actual values of privately held firms. The survey has proved invaluable to firm principals and professional business appraisers alike in determining the value of architecture, consulting engineering, and environmental consulting firms. In addition to detailed valuation statistics for hundreds of firms, the survey includes the latest version of the "Z-value," a rule-of-thumb valuation formula based on the data collected in the survey. One-page profiles summarizing over 300 actual valuations of every size and type of A/E/P and environmental consulting firm are also included. The survey data is augmented with a directory of professional business appraisers experienced in serving design and environmental consulting firms. The 1998 edition includes a new introduction to valuation concepts by Colvin T. Matheson, CFA.

                              Book Description

History confirms that wealth equates to power. Author, entrepreneur, and management consultant Robert Wallace contends that wealth is the one remaining ingredient still missing from the African-American power base. In Black Wealth: Your Road to Small Business Success, Wallace demonstrates that, while ethnic solidarity and political power have increased significantly over the past thirty-five years, the creation of personal wealth within the black community has lagged behind.

Wallace argues that the best way to create black wealth is through entrepreneurship—the establishment, growth, and institutionalization of black-owned businesses that keep money within the community and draw new money in from outside. He also identifies the ideal person to establish a business that is both personally lucrative and empowering for the entire community . . . you!

But where do you start? How do you create a business? How will you make it grow? How do you overcome such obstacles as racism and sexism? Black Wealth gives you expert guidance. Building upon fifteen years of research, Wallace uses inspiring portraits and case studies of successful African-American and female entrepreneurs. This book identifies and codifies the skills and strategies that were key to the success of these bold pioneers. What emerges is the Wallace 4 Quadrant Model For Entrepreneurial Success™, which you can emulate to achieve a similar outcome in your own professional life.

You will learn how to maximize your abilities and capacities, develop a plan for success, ensure that your plan conforms with the hard realities of the business world, and gain know-how from the successes and failures of those who have gone before you. In this indispensable book, you'll discover:

If you dream of the independence, financial freedom, and satisfaction of operating your own business; if you search for ways to strengthen your community while brightening your own future; if you feel the need to supplement your energy and determination with the hard-won wisdom and advice of those who have succeeded before you: Start your journey toward your dreams by reading Black Wealth.
