5 out of 5 stars Objective & Detailed account of 1955 Pogrom.......2007-08-13

It is immediately obvious that the topic of the book was thoroughly researched and Professor Vryonis provides excellent background information. He compares Turkish government statistics and statistics of the Greek Orthodox church in analyzing the population before, during and after the 1955 pogrom. Overall, a very balanced, fair portrayal of this ugly period in Turkish history.

4 out of 5 stars Cold War shotgun marriage of Greece and Turkey frays (1955).......2007-01-11

This book thoroughly analyzes the 1955 pogrom that finally ended centuries of coexistence between ethnic Greek minorities and Turkish governments, first Islamic, since 1908 nationalist. Mr. Vryonis presents more detail than the general reader needs to get the point; perhaps he was memorializing the productive lives of many who might otherwise be forgotten.

Mr. Vryonis marks 1955 as the beginning of anti-NATO and especially anti-American sentiment in Greece. Greek protests on behalf of the ravaged community in Istanbul were met with evasion by the NATO powers, unwilling to antagonize Turkey. Turkey itself quietly impoverished and forced out those Greek communities not destroyed in 1955, eg on the island of Imros.

More debatable is Mr. Vryonis's thesis that Turkey would docilely have accepted the emergence of a unitary Cyprus under majority-Greek rule, if not for British scheming. I suspect Turkey would have caught on sooner or later without British help. But ill-will about Cyprus would certainly poison Greek-Turkish-NATO relations for the next several decades.

Mr. Vryonis suggests that most Greeks were pro-American before 1955. Both Greece and Turkey had been drawn into NATO, partly by economic enticements, partly by fear of the Soviet bloc (for Greece, a vicious insurgency in the north; for Turkey, conventional Soviet claims on the straits and former Armenian territory). But perhaps it was not realistic to expect Greece and Turkey to remain allies once the unusual convergence of the late 1940s changed.

5 out of 5 stars A true story.......2006-01-17

I do not have the means to confirm all the details of the author's account, but the main story agrees with a description of the events given by a Turkish author, Orhan Pamuk, in his book "Istanbul" (chapters 19 and 25). Reconciliation between Greeks and Turks is highly desirable but it is not helped by the attitude shown by some reviewers who try to deny the past.
(Or by those in Turkey who have put Pamuk on trial.)

5 out of 5 stars Study history.......2005-08-16

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.

This is an excellent history for those interested in recent Grecko/Turkish past. There is no war mongering here, just the facts of what happened at a terrible time in 1955.

Turks should be ashamed of this history, and we need to know it. But it is not taught in Turkish schools.

Thank you Dr. Vryonis.

1 out of 5 stars Great book for Turkish and Islamic bashers.......2005-08-15

This is a one-sided political account of events in Turkey in 1955 which ignores what the Greeks were trying to do in Cyprus in favor of making Turks and Muslims into evil one-dimensional villians. Ironically enough for those like the creator of this book who attack the so-called backwardness and agressiveness of Islam, the anti-Greek movement on Cyprus was led by a anti-Islamic fanatic Greek Archbishop. That movement was intending union with Greece and the destruction of the Turkish/Islamic population of Cyprus.

The most important treaty to understand in this matter is the treaty of Sèvres in which Turkey was to be dismembered and turned into a set of small puppet colonies. In the name of protecting minorities, the country was to be partitioned among the British, Greeks, French, Italians and Americans. Even control of the economic life of the country was to be in the hands of foreigners under the treaty. Sèvres collapsed because the greed of the Greeks could not be satisfied by even such a terrible treaty as that. Vryonis has nothing to say about any of it, but he cannot erase it from history.

No sensible person in Greece or Turkey today wants to revive a mostly dormant conflict. Even the events of this book are 50 years old. Those who seem most concerned about reviving the conflict are to be found in other parts of the world. To them I would say fight your own wars. Don't drag other countries into your problems.

    Book Description

Minds, Causes, and Mechanisms questions the internal consistency of causal physicalism, and vindicates a novel approach to mental causation.Through a series of original and detailed arguments, it is made clear that many difficulties in the physicalist picture derive from an implausible view about causality. An alternative approach is defended which shows how mental contents, as opposed to functional properties, may be causally efficacious without having an implementing mechanism. This volume includes a lucid discussion of recent developments by philosophers such as Block, Davidson, Fodor, Kim, Lewis, Mellor, Putnam, Schiffer, Shoemaker, and Yablo. No one who wants to deal with the issue of mental causation, or causation in general, will be able to ignore the strong case against physicalism that this book makes.

Defense mechanisms against fungi in bark, xylem, roots, and foliage of woody angiosperms and gymnosperms are addressed in this newest addition to the SPRINGER SERIES IN WOOD SCIENCE. The topic is approached from an anatomical and physiological perspective with emphasis on the relationships between plant structure and function and their role in defensive reactions and wound repair. Contributions on the biochemistry of defensive reactions, in-depth treatises on specific diseases such as Dutch elm disease, Hypoxylon canker of aspen, and Fusiform rust of pines, as well as chapters on wound reactions in bark tissues, microenvironmental aspects of xylem decay, the role of mycorrhizzal fungi in defense, physiological responses of trees to fungal symbionts of insects, and the application of tissue culture and immunocytochemistry to the study of defense mechanisms in trees are included. One of the most significant features of the book is the large complement of photographic plates which serves to bring together a plethora of histopathological data.

                      Book Description

`This book examines European Economic and Monetary Union from the perspective of public choice theory - that is, whether it is consistent with the interests of the protagonists. EMU was born mainly out of the political agenda for creating ever-closer union. Professor Martin-Das explains how the interaction of economic shocks and political interests has the potential to break up EMU and frustrate that objective. The book is a careful survey of the various fields of economic thought that come together in this topic, as well as a mine of information on the European Union's institutions and evolution.'

                      - Patrick Minford, Cardiff Business School, University of Wales, UK

The future of European Monetary Union (EMU) stands as one of the most important economic issues of the era. The author argues that in the event of macroeconomic shocks, rather than acting as a cohesive force, EMU could give rise to disunity. As EMU is not an optimal currency area, asymmetric shocks affecting each country differently could be critical to its future.

The success of EMU depends upon the ability of institutions in the EU to satisfy the monetary and fiscal policy demands of sufficient numbers of national constituents, interest groups, and multinational corporations. This book employs principles from Public Choice to analyze the EU institutions that participate in the monetary policy making process of EMU and assesses whether they have the mechanisms to cope with asymmetric macroeconomic shocks. In particular, it examines the European Council, Council of Ministers, European Commission, European Parliament and the European Central Bank.

This book provides an invaluable critique of the EMU plan and will be of interest to scholars of European economics, macroeconomics and Public Choice.

Flash Application Design Solutions shows you how to harness the power of ActionScript 2.0 and make the most of the improved design tools of Flash 8 to create usable, intuitive Flash interfaces. In this book, you'll find a number of concrete Flash usability solutions that use elements such as navigation menus, data filtering, forms, content loaders, Flash liquid layouts, help tips, and many other features. You'll learn how each of these solutions actually improves on what is possible with HTML and JavaScript. In each case, you'll see how users interact with the website feature, and how it gives users the most intuitive, enjoyable experience possible while using your application. You'll get a step-by-step analysis of how to program and build each solution, and how to make it scalable, maintainable, and reusable. The book concludes with a case study that showcases the solutions developed in the previous chapters, all working together in a single application. This example puts all the pieces together and highlights just how, with some thought and consideration, Flash can improve usability on the Web. This book is essential reading for all Flash designers and developers, from beginners seeking valid solutions to veteran Flashers looking for a fresh perspective on application design, interaction, and reusability. 5 out of 5 stars Great book to take OOP to the next level.......2007-03-29

Flash Application Design Solutions was recommended to me by a co-worker of mine when I started learning OOP. I currently work at Avenue A | Razorfish in the Chicago office where we create sites such as Postopia [...]. In an ironic occurrence, it turns out that Craig Bryant, one of the authors of this book, was the person who set up the original framework for the Postopia site. I've met Craig only once when he and Ka Wai made a presentation (a really cool one, at that) at the Apple store on Michigan Avenue. They definitely know what they are talking about and this book is no exception.

I was eager to get started here after I had already realized the basic building blocks of OOP and wanted to get a bit more of an edge on setting up my projects. The book didn't disappoint as it gave me at least two very valuable classes that I still use to this day. The UIObject class is now the core building block of any navigation system I build and the (what I named) Broadcaster class (that is essentially the same as the EventBroadcaster in this book) is just about the best way to communicate between classes.

Chapter three is a great introduction into extending basic frameworks. Each and every chapter has a great introduction on what is an issue in the work you're about to tackle. Ka Wai and Craig then tell you how these issues can be improved and finally we go on to improve the issues to see exactly how much of a difference their process makes in developing your own solutions in the future.

Chapter six has a fair warning by the authors that it is a bit long winded and is relatively hard to get through unless you are going through and following the source, but it uncovers a really neat system of inventory views and selection devices. I'm normally not a huge fan of building one large application throughout a technical book, but its almost necessary to show how to extend the core and your own classes and build up the concepts from start to finish.

For anyone who has already read the Object Oriented Programming for Flash 8 title and is looking for a bit more on OOP, I'd definitely recommend this book as a companion. It'll help you get through that gray phase where you're now familiar with OOP concepts but you're not familiar enough to know how to practically apply them to your own projects.

5 out of 5 stars A sorely needed title in the Flash "application" space........2006-05-05

This book is fantastic. It brings to the Flash community a real discussion of the oft-misunderstood "usability" that so many Flash applications lack. Books like this, and the work that it inspires are critical to helping Flash mature as a serious application development platform, rather than creating simplistic little "applets" and simple web commercials.

The authors here deftly weave a compelling tale around the actual pieces of usability and functionality that make up application development in general, and tie it all back together with Flash as the development platform. Some great books exist out there that teach about usability and functionality design (Cooper's "About Face", et al), but this is the first that truly brings that sort of learning in an instantly applicable way to the Flash development community.

                      Highly recommended.

The Web Site Usability Handbook is for individuals who evaluate and improve the usability of Web sites. It does not, as the title might imply, specifically show Web developers how to make their sites more usable.

The book explores the growing field of Web usability, with equal emphasis on theory and practicality, and focuses primarily on measuring usability accurately and applying it to formal and informal testing. The concept of a usability toolbox--a collection of tools and techniques--is presented, along with sound reasoning for the use of each component. The tools vary from index-card sorting to heuristic evaluation to focus groups. There is some fascinating material also about the human factors of usability, such as the mechanics of vision and the idiosyncrasies of human memory.

A chapter that's devoted to design guidelines includes some concrete suggestions, such as "don't overuse emphasis" and "make printer-friendly pages." This chapter contains no revolutionary ideas; instead, it's a helpful list of pointers that are worth revisiting from time to time. More elemental are the 10 usability heuristics that are presented in the next chapter and that were developed originally by usability guru Jakob Nielsen. These high-level concepts demand careful consideration, but can produce impressive results.

The Web Site Usability Handbook presents the framework for a usability lab complete with video observation, and shows how to conduct objective usability testing. Many organizations skip the potentially critical development step of usability analysis; however, if yours wants to be more forward-looking in Web strategy, this is a good guide for getting it started in usability. --Stephen W Plain

                      Book Description

Since the first edition of the Web Site Usability Handbook was published in 2000 there have been numerous changes in the technology world. After the Dot-Com bubble burst, corporate training and education budgets were cut severely and investment in new technology businesses slowed down. But today things have turned around again and behind the scenes at technology companies, usability specialists are still quietly working to make the electronic world easier to manage. This second edition provides the new insights and guidance needed to help make usability an effective and enjoyable journey. Every word from the first edition of this book has been revised, or at least heavily reconsidered; and in many cases, whole sections have been removed or rewritten entirely, while other sections are completely new to this edition. The casual and conversational tone of the fi rst edition has also changed because the current wave of usability specialists embodies a much higher degree of training and knowledge of basic science. The goals of the book, however, have not changed: to train those concerned with usability how to understand it as one piece of the large technology puzzle that is affecting and shaping the human and natural worlds. Usability is an art and a science, but it is also an obligation we have to society. Accessibility and usability form the foundation of human-enabling technology; that is, technology that serves us, rather than technology that we serve. Everything from understanding the human factors of design and how to generate user-centered designs to accessibility, usability metrics, heuristic evaluation, and testing are detailed. Whether you are a usability professional seeking methods for transforming data into change or a web designer seeking guidance for making your sites easier to navigate, you'll find information and practical tools you can apply to your own sites today.

The concept of what should go into a web site is constantly changing. Therre was a time not too many years ago when every site had to open with a long Flash sequence just to show you that the developer knew Flash. This soon changed as site developers learned that visitors came there for information and were not usually in the mood to watch a cartoon or type flying across the screen. Now the big sites seem to have gone away from all but a little bit of Flash.

This is just one example of things being done to make the web more usable. This book talks about making web sites more usable. It is not a checklist or simple cookbook of things to do. Instead it is a text on the overall concepts that you can use to put together a study to determine the usability of your site. Indeed it has enough information for you to become an expert working in this area as a consultant or corporate employee.

This is the second edition of this book, the main differences are that it is brought up to date, and is written in a much more serious tone as the whole concept of web usability has become more professional.

I have read and re-read this book until the cover is nearly worn out. I originally used it to get up to speed on what web site usability means to me as a User Interface designer and Information Architect. I more recently re-read it to prepare a presentation on Usability Engineering. Unlike many fluffy "design concepts" or "best practices illustrated" manuals, Mark's book goes into detail on "how to" evaluate web sites for potential usability problems. It goes into more depth (and yet is easier to comprehend) than most other texts I have read on the subject of web site / web application usability. After re-reading it for 1.5 hours I was able to put together an effective outline for my usability engineering presentation; the outline contained over 15 3" x 5" note cards distilling the essence of good usability practices into a series of audience understandable bullet points, and was successful in landing me the opportunity I was seeking with a very demanding client. I have also used it in the past to spec out the equipment, roles, staff, and monies needed to put together an effective usability testing center. Regardless of whether your needs be instructional or professional, this is the Usability primer for you!

The author states that the book was created as a text for his class and it certainly reads like a textbook. For a book that is about usability, the text is almost unreadably tedious at times. (e.g. "...the first step toward Web site usability is to figure out the main goals of your Web site. For labeling purposes we will call these 'goals of the purpose.'") Each of the points in the book is better made and illustrated in other texts (Krug - "Don't Make Me Think" is good). The attempts to lighten the subject with gratuitous cartoons and humor were more irritating than amusing.

I loved this book. I am a new psychology PhD looking to get into web usability consulting and this book was perfect for me. I have not read other books on the topic but i can say that I am glad I found this one. It was a very easy read, and i really learned a lot. I like how it takes a psychological viewpoint much of the time. I also really like how he sets you up 100% to be a usability tester. He tells you everything you need to know from A-Z with very little budget. He is also very generous giving away all his secrets and a CD rom that has all sorts of pre-made forms to get you started (powerpoint presentation on usability to show clients, informed consent forms for experimental participants etc...). Now I feel i am ready to read something more technical.

This book is an exelent resource for both academics/students and professionals alike. When I was a student I missed a book like this. A book that quickly sumarised the field of interface design. Research Based Web Design does not go into depth but it will quickly give an overview of the field. If you are stuck with your thesis like I was then this book is a perfect reference to find additional sources fast and easy.

If you are getting started as a professional, Research based web design will quickly bring to the surface many of the important points that you will have forgotten from school. It is also a good cure for myopia when you after a few yeras in the bussiness have gotten a little to confortable.

My only word of caution is that this is not a book for beginers. You need to be aware of the material presented before hand since the explanations are very distilled from the incredible amount of resarch awailable. If you are just starting out make sure to have other resources available that can give a more indepth view of points that you find interesting. But as a quick reference to kickstart your memory or as a starting point to locating other sources Research Based Web Design is a must to complement any design and usability library since it is a summary of every book or research article you own.

                      I highly recomend it

These guidelines are available for free on the web at http://usability.gov/pdfs/guidelines.html. But, the best way to view then is on paper and not on your computer monitor. Do be warned if you try to print, you will need a color printer, as much of the information is lost in black and white. So, save yourself a big hassle and the cost of much toner/ink - buy the book!

The 187 peer-reviewed guidelines are each rated on a 1 to 5 scale to indicate the strength of evidence supporting its hypothesis. These are not ideas promoted by one organization to further its reputation or advance its agenda. This is the result of review and input from experts from government, academia, and the private sector. Your tax dollars were spent developing these unbiased guidelines. They provide a roadmap that should help designers and developers avoid problems and produce more effective websites.

You can preview the book at the URL above. It's a ground-breaking reference and guide you don't want to be without.

                      Book Description

Today a Web site is only as valuable as it is productive. Users need sites that are easy to use and helpful. The sites that are not, lose their visitors interest quickly and can cost companies loyal customers. This is even more of an issue when users might be coming to a site via a wireless device. Not only do designers have to consider different platforms and browsers when designing sites, now they need to consider different devices and user agents for viewing with those devices. So how do you design a site that is effective on all these devices? You begin by knowing your users and understanding how and why your content is accessed. From there you can address the needs of your specific users and design accordingly. The goals of The Wireless Web Usability Handbook are threefold: provide designers with a new awareness of the ways that pervasive computing affects how humans interact; give designers an understanding of the problems and risks involved with this new generation of devices; provide the tools to ensure that the content designers create for pervasive computing devices is usable. These and other valuable guidelines are provided here in a pragmatic style that clarifies what designers really need to think about when designing Web sites for current and next generation devices and applications.

As a person practicing and researching usability, I was interested to see what can be written about this challenging subject.

In the index of the book, you can find chapters suchs as: Cell-Phone-Class Devices; the physcal layer, the logical layer, the cognitive layer etc. The same goes for PDAs, pager-based systems and so on. It seems very interesting...

... until you read the text. For example, the book tells us that the Cell-phone class device has a logical layer that "is really a tiny PC, with small amounts of 'main' memory..." This is so rude, oversimplified metaphor, that it is more misleading than anything else! This book is full of such oversimplified descriptions or lists of obviousnesses.

                      Big disappointment.

What a waste of time and money to have this book! No more needs to be said but you are not going to gain anything substantial from this book. If the author's book on the wired web usability has some value, this on is just a collection of obsolete whitepapers and heuristic principles.

Don't buy it if you can resist the title.

                      1 out of 5 stars Usability book?.......2002-03-22

I must say I'm more than disappointed. The book really doesn't seem to have much to say about usability considering the wireless web. Although technical stuff is presented quite widely, there is no point in that. "Device x does not support audio". That doesn't help! There is no path whatsoever from those techical details to how they should be dealt with. It's all that "less is beautiful" abstract emptiness..

"Use emulators" - How does the author think these kind of apps are developed? Of course one must use emulators to get anything working!

The "new PCD specific heuristics": "Safety - does your device/system irradiate your users with unsafe amounts of microwave energy?" For crying out loud! I'll have to watch out not to radiate other people (by using radiating XHTML code :)! Other heuristics are not any better or more useful.. And a lot of the book is the same old Nielsen related stuff (why here - again?)..

Well, a bit angry review I guess. Just seems that there's really no point in this book..
