    Book Description

The connection between price inflation and real economic activity has been a focus of macroeconomic research--and debate--for much of the past century. Although this connection is crucial to our understanding of what monetary policy can and cannot accomplish, opinions about its basic properties have swung widely over the years.

Today, virtually everyone studying monetary policy acknowledges that, contrary to what many modern macroeconomic models suggest, central bank actions often affect both inflation and measures of real economic activity, such as output, unemployment, and incomes. But the nature and magnitude of these effects are not yet understood.

In this volume, Robert M. Solow and John B. Taylor present their views on the dilemmas facing U.S. monetary policymakers. The discussants are Benjamin M. Friedman, James K. Galbraith, N. Gregory Mankiw, and William Poole. The aim of this lively exchange of views is to make both an intellectual contribution to macroeconmics and a practical contribution to the solution of a public policy question of central importance.

5 out of 5 stars fruitful and timely discussion.......2000-02-11

"Inflation, Unemployment, and Monetary Policy" is one of the most serious problem in the developed countries, especially my country Japan, which is suffering a severe unemployment problem for a long recession. Because of the continuous Government's spending policy. Japanese fiscal situation is deteriorated, so japanese economy's last hope is a monetary poicy. At that time, reading this exciting book and studying excellent opinions of 6 notable economists are truly fruitful. In this book, 6 economists make a poweful and exciting discussion...of course, there is no perfect solution...But, I believe that I can make a firm basis for thinking this severe problem.

        Book Description

This book presents a revisionist view of monetary policy and monetary regimes. It presents several new mechanisms, indicating that money affects long-term production. The consequent policy implications are also discussed, including: the uses of monetary policy and monetary regimes in achieving macroeconomic goals; the impact of an independent central bank; the effects of a movement from floating exchange rates to fixed exchange rates in a monetary union. In addition to the theoretical and policy discussions the book also contains a comprehensive survey of the current state of scholarship in this area.

          Book Description

Like many other countries, Canada suffers from stagflation - a stagnant or negative rate of economic growth, combined with high inflation. While most economists agree that Keynesian policies were reasonably successful during the 1950s and 1960s, such approaches were no longer effective by the mid-Seventies. Governments in the United States, Great Britain and Canada - faced with double-digit inflation in the midst of recession - have turned to conservative economic policies to cope with a growing economic crisis. Under the banner of monetarism, the money supply has been tightened, economies deregulated and government expenditures drastically slashed.

But has the monetarist approach worked? In order to evaluate the economic situation, the Canadian Institute for Economic Policy sponsored the Conference on Post-Keynesian Alternatives and invited leading economists from Canada, the United States and Great Britain to assess the monetarist record. The consensus that emerged at the end of the three-day conference was that monetarism, if it works at all, is a slow and painful remedy that affects most adversely those who are least able to cope with straitened circumstances. The conference concluded that, with monetarism in force and with all its potential for damage, the need was more urgent than ever to develop and refine post-Keynesian alternatives.

From the supplier: The rational expectations approach to macroeconomics suggests that hyperinflations were ended abruptly without significant output or unemployment costs. Using new evidence, I find that, while transition costs did take place following the Hungarian hyperinflation of 1945-46, they were not linked to the credibility of the regime change. Although the evidence presented actually reinforces the rational expectations interpretation of the end of hyperinflation, the paper also stresses the importance of distinguishing between an economy experiencing high inflation and one emerging from a milder inflation. From the author: This paper reexamines the findings of Alogoskoufis and Smith (1991), who argue that sharp increases in inflation persistence can be attributed to changes in the exchange rate regime. Using long time series data from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Sweden, we suggest that these authors' emphasis on a post-1967 shift in inflation persistence is misplaced and that there are other equally good candidates to account for changes in inflation persistence such as wars, oil price shocks, and central bank reforms. This conclusion is supported by recently developed tests that allow for multiple structural shifts at unknown dates.

                    Book Description

This comprehensive book presents an original reconstruction of the different interpretations of the Phillips curve. The authors demonstrate through an in-depth analysis how it is possible to find non-neoclassical foundations in the trade-off between inflation and unemployment. The debate is presented from a historical perspective which charts the evolution of the Phillips curve from a non-neoclassical perspective, taking account of Post Keynesian literature.

In the first part of the book the authors focus on the origins of the Phillips curve and they critically analyze Richard Lipsey's interpretation and approach to the Phillips curve. They then explore the neoclassical and monetarist interpretation, paying special attention to the evolution of monetarism and the Keynesian critique of this approach. The Kaleckian, Keynesian and Marxist interpretations of the Phillips trade-off are then presented. Here the authors show how the relationship between inflation, unemployment and money described in these approaches accurately reflects the fundamental features of today's capitalist economies. In the final section a new Phillips curve is constructed, taking into account the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment and the hysteresis of it.

Inflation, Unemployment and Money will be of interest to macroeconomists, post Keynesians and monetary and financial economists.

                      Book Description

Sebastian Dullien gives a novel explanation for unemployment and inflation in the Euro-Zone. He argues that unemployment stems from a lack of cooperation between unions and monetary authorities: In an economy with endogenous money as EMU, wage setters are responsible for price stability while the central bank is responsible for the level of output. Cooperation between both actors is necessary for high employment and low inflation. The current institutional set-up is found to be unable to assure cooperation.

The Information Security Dictionary provides complete and easy to read explanations of common security and infrastructure protection terms. Special attention is given to terms that most often prevent educated readers from understanding journal articles or books in cryptography, computer security, information systems, role-based access management and applied fields that build on those disciplines. Also included in the dictionary are terms that refer to computing forensics, malware attacks, privacy issues, system design, security auditing and vulnerability testing.

This essential reference tool presents cutting-edge information on the most recent terms in use, in one concisely formatted volume. Similar to dictionaries for languages, statistics, epidemiology, and other disciplines, The Information Security Dictionary will be a valuable addition to the library of any IT professional and IT student.

The Information Security Dictionary is designed for a professional audience, composed of researchers and practitioners in industry. This dictionary is also suitable for students in computer science, engineering, and information sciences.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a reference book.......2006-07-28

For a book at such price and an encompassing title, it is disappointing to see Biba Integrity Model is listed as "Bibra Integrity Model." This is just wrong.

There are no listing for Common Criteria, nor Rainbow Series, ITSEC, TCSEC. For people in the Infosec industry, these are big tag items quite hard to miss.

Do not expect to find Clark-Wilson Model, Lattice based model, oh, and if you want to know what TLS is? please see SSL, puuuffff...

My recommendation is to STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK! Stick to your good'ol browser and start with wikipedia. It would give you much more fortified knowledge in Information Security.

Hello, all, I have bought a bunch of books from Amazon but this is my first review. I am writing it to give people a better idea of what this book offers.
My recommendation? If you are thinking of raising beef and want to get a very broad overview of what is involved, it may be OK. If you are already down that slippery slope, there are much better books (as well as the extension divisions of most Ag Colleges).
A little about my situation: I luckily have a real job, but bought 35 acres north of town last year, always wanted to be a rancher, so am feeding 3 steers on very meager non-irrigated pasture, with hay and grain supplementation mandantory.
I'm sure the author didn't intend this book to be a comprehensive tome, but it is VERY superficial in many areas.
                      Examples:
FEEDING: I now know how many turnips Thomas Jefferson recommends that I feed my cattle, but wish there had been more on how much grain to plan on feeding rather than pretty cursory treatment of the subject.
WHEN ARE THEY READY TO BUTCHER?: It's...."When you can see the fat around his cod, over his pinbones, and on the rear flank. If a steer has fat around the tailhead, he's close to grading prime; If he has a fat brisket, he's too fat." HUH?? Perhaps a diagram of some of these terms? If you're writing a book for us novices, don't throw these terms at us!
BIRTHING: I'm not dumb enough to try breeding for now, but if you are interested and have a cow get into trouble, just..."Gently look and feel until you have an idea what the problem is, then give the appropriate assistance" (!!!!!!!) Or, as she goes on, "or call your vet or neighbor to help." I should add that this text is accompanied by a photo of a farmer with his hand somewhere up into the south end of a northbound cow. (This is an interesting combination of not enough/too much information in one photo!)
I don't mean to be too harsh, the book is well made and the photos are lovely, and 2-3 years ago before I knew what I was getting into it probably would have been fun reading. Just understand that it won't answer many questions.
                      Jim

                          Description:
Supplying electricity to remote rural communities in lesser developed countries (LDCs) is key to improving livelihoods and reducing poverty. Decentralised renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity have the potential to provide a viable and sustainable alternative to overcome the physical and economic barriers facing the expansion of low and medium tension grids. This paper critically assesses the impact of small-scale PV systems installed in homes, schools and public buildings over the last six years under the PERMER project-Renewable Energy Project for the Rural Electricity Market-co-funded by a range of public and private sources. The structure of financial subsidies has enabled these remote rural communities to receive an electricity supply that, in many cases, would otherwise not have been possible. Replacing traditional energy sources such as candles and kerosene lamps, the PV electricity systems are providing better quality light, reducing indoor air pollution levels, as well as a means to power communications technologies and extend hours for cultural and productive activities. There are, however, certain technical, organisational and intellectual barriers that remain to be overcome before the project can be considered to be operating optimally.

                            Description:
Project Demonstrations In Small Industries for Reducing waste (DESIRE) was implemented between 1993 and 1995 to foster the uptake of waste minimization among small scale industries in India. The project adopted the PRISMA project design and included: waste minimization assessments in 12 demonstration companies (from three industry sectors); development of a waste minimization assessment methodology customized to the needs and opportunities of small scale industries; assessment of company level constraints and enabling measures; formulation of policy recommendations; and dissemination activities. The follow-up assessment confirmed in all five demonstration companies that still operate under comparable conditions at the start of the DESIRE project, the continued utilization of the capacity built in the DESIRE project. There is also compelling evidence that some companies that participated in follow-up dissemination activities were able to implement waste minimization without an expensive external waste minimization assessment. The policy impact of the DESIRE project is mixed. The project results did however inspire change and catalyze new initiatives and follow-up waste minimization and cleaner production projects.

The goal of this project was to demonstrate to Bosnian and Herzegovinian industries that significant reductions in water use, wastewater discharge and pollution load can be obtained at little or no cost and that efficient use of resources and reduction of waste generation at source are clearly preferable compared with the end-of-pipe wastewater treatment. The project was performed on a small-scale slaughterhouse industry ''Sahbaz'' using a methodology prescribed by the Regional Activity Center for Cleaner Production from Barcelona and the Ministry of Environment of Spain. Upon detailed diagnosis of the industrial process and waste flows generated, the opportunities for environmental improvement were identified and CP measures were recommended and implemented. In the first three months of project implementation the amount of water saved and BOD reduced was 32 percent while salt consumption was reduced by 40 percent. Total annual net savings resulting from the application of selected measures were 669@?/year.
