Stochastic Optimization Methods
Kurt Marti Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540222723 |
Book Description
Optimization problems arising in practice involve random parameters. For the computation of robust optimal solutions, i.e., optimal solutions being insensitive with respect to random parameter variations, deterministic substitute problems are needed. Based on the distribution of the random data, and using decision theoretical concepts, optimization problems under stochastic uncertainty are converted into deterministic substitute problems. Due to the occurring probabilities and expectations, approximative solution techniques must be applied. Deterministic and stochastic approximation methods and their analytical properties are provided: Taylor expansion, regression and response surface methods, probability inequalities, First Order Reliability Methods, convex approximation/deterministic descent directions/efficient points, stochastic approximation methods, differentiation of probability and mean value functions. Convergence results of the resulting iterative solution procedures are given.

Randomization Methods in Algorithm Design: Dimacs Workshop, December 12-14, 1997 (Dimacs Series in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science)
Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0821809164 |
Book Description
This volume is based on proceedings held during the DIMACS workshop on Randomization Methods in Algorithm Design in December 1997 at Princeton. The workshop was part of the DIMACS Special Year on Discrete Probability. It served as an interdisciplinary research workshop that brought together a mix of leading theorists, algorithmists and practitioners working in the theory and implementation aspects of algorithms involving randomization.Randomization has played an important role in the design of both sequential and parallel algorithms. The last decade has witnessed tremendous growth in the area of randomized algorithms. During this period, randomized algorithms went from being a tool in computational number theory to finding widespread applications in many problem domains.
Major topics covered include randomization techniques for linear and integer programming problems, randomization in the design of approximate algorithms for combinatorial problems, randomization in parallel and distributed algorithms, practical implementation of randomized algorithms, de-randomization issues, and pseudo-random generators. This volume focuses on theory and implementation aspects of algorithms involving randomization. It would be suitable as a graduate or advanced graduate text.

Stochastic Decomposition: A Statistical Method for Large Scale Stochastic Linear Programming (Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications)
J.L. Higle , and S. Sen Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792338405 |
Book Description
This book summarizes developments related to a class of methods called Stochastic Decomposition (SD) algorithms, which represent an important shift in the design of optimization algorithms. Unlike traditional deterministic algorithms, SD combines sampling approaches from the statistical literature with traditional mathematical programming constructs (e.g. decomposition, cutting planes etc.). This marriage of two highly computationally oriented disciplines leads to a line of work that is most definitely driven by computational considerations. Furthermore, the use of sampled data in SD makes it extremely flexible in its ability to accommodate various representations of uncertainty, including situations in which outcomes/scenarios can only be generated by an algorithm/simulation. The authors report computational results with some of the largest stochastic programs arising in applications. These results (mathematical as well as computational) are the `tip of the iceberg'. Further research will uncover extensions of SD to a wider class of problems. Audience: Researchers in mathematical optimization, including those working in telecommunications, electric power generation, transportation planning, airlines and production systems. Also suitable as a text for an advanced course in stochastic optimization.

Stochastic Hydrology and its Use in Water Resources Systems Simulation and Optimization (NATO Science Series E:)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792322886 |
Book Description
Stochastic hydrology is an essential base of water resources systems analysis, due to the inherent randomness of the input, and consequently of the results. These results have to be incorporated in a decision-making process regarding the planning and management of water systems. It is through this application that stochastic hydrology finds its true meaning, otherwise it becomes merely an academic exercise. A set of well known specialists from both stochastic hydrology and water resources systems present a synthesis of the actual knowledge currently used in real-world planning and management. The book is intended for both practitioners and researchers who are willing to apply advanced approaches for incorporating hydrological randomness and uncertainty into the simulation and optimization of water resources systems.

Stochastic Local Search Algorithms for Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimizations: Methods and Analysis
Luis F. Paquete Manufacturer: IOS Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1586035967 |
Book Description
Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization Problems (MCOPs) arise in many real-life applications and they are among the hardest optimization problems. Therefore, high-quality approximations that can be obtained in reasonable time are, in practice, preferable to the often infeasible long computation times required for finding the optimum. Stochastic Local Search (SLS) algorithms were shown to give state-of-the-art results for many other problems, but little is known on how to design and analyse them for MCOPs. The main purpose of this book is to fill this gap. We start by defining two search models that correspond to two distinct ways of tackling MCOPs by SLS algorithms. Notions of local optima for MCOPs are formally introduced and related to the typical outcome of SLS algorithms. Moreover, we present a systematic approach for the design of these algorithms based on the notion of SLS components and a general guideline to empirically analyse algorithm performance. Finally, several SLS algorithms and SLS components are tested on the Multiobjective Traveling Salesman Problem and the Multiobjective Quadratic Assignment Problem. The effect of instance features and SLS components on the performance of the SLS algorithms are identified by experimental design techniques. The results obtained clearly indicate that the best performing variants are new state-of-the-art algorithms.
