2 out of 5 stars Of Rule and Review.......2005-09-16

"As specialization and division of labor increase, there is greater demand on the state to provide collective goods where once there were solely private goods or no goods at all."

From the second sentence of this book, it charts its course in oblivious contradiction of reality. In reality, of course, economic activity individuates and privatizes as society develops. The few exceptions, e.g., the Soviet Union, are typically short-lived and embarrassing to their promoters.

Ms. Levi is obviously a clever person, but sadly, as with many clever people in academia, her intelligence in this book is deployed mainly to play games of self-referential abstraction.

This book's obscurity and practical uselessness mean that it is unlikely to be of any consequence. There probably is a good book to be written on a general theory of comparative taxation, but this ain't it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, an excellent idea, an excellent script!.......2000-08-12

A virtuous mix of rational choice, institutionalism and neo-Marxism theories. Levi explains the interaction among State, actors and citizens that has preferences and strategic capacity to maximize objectives. With the historical examples worked by Levi, I notice the possibility to analyze the relationships among the Brazilian State, business associations and unions face the politics of neoliberal reforms recently applied by the brazilian government. Book Description

b /b b i Rules and Choice in Economics /i /b is concerned with how the rules and institutions which are the basis of cooperation in society can be systematically explained. Economics, with its emphasis on individual choice, seems unable to account for individuals following rules when it is not in their interest to do so. Sociology, which can explain such rule-following behavior, struggles to account for purposeful individual action. br br In the place of these models, Viktor J. Vanberg offers an account which cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Analyzing the work of thinkers including Hayek, Rawls, Nozick and Coleman, Vanberg addresses issues such as rational choice, rule following behavior, self-interest and morality. br br The book pays particular attention to a comparison of Hayek's evolutionary liberalism and Buchanan's contractarian liberalism. Taken together the various parts of the volume represent a coherent theoretical argument about why institutions cohere and why they change.

        Book Description

Political, intellectual, and academic discourse in the United States has been awash in political correctness, which has itself been berated and defended -- yet little understood. As a corrective, Nelson and Greene look at a more general process: adopting political positions to enhance one's reputation for trustworthiness both to others and to oneself.
Phillip Nelson and Kenneth Greene are Professors of Economics in the Department of Economics at the State University of New York, Binghamton.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointed Reader.......2007-04-23

This book was a complete disappointment! I purchased the book after reading the kudos on the site, but it's apparent that these were written by friends of the author. The book provides a sophomoric outlook on the the challenges of "millennium marketing" -- to say the least. I'm also quite amazed that there were so many grammar errors and typos in the book... it was clearly NOT copy-edited. Save your money.

2 out of 5 stars The 12 Rules of Millennium Marketing.......2001-10-24

As stated in previous reviews, this book is ABSOLUTELY a "quick read" especially if you skip over th typos and poor grammar. The author simply repeated other ideas she read or watched on TV in different words. "No seasonal or soft market excuses" ignores reality. These conditions exist and fairy tale dreams will not remove today's economy. The thought of "You Must Be Willing to Sweat" is absurd. Individuals who make the effort to read this type of book have already chosen their path to succeed. The "Universal Theory" is not a new innovative idea but a proven method by many other marketing leaders.

Although this book may prove to provide common sense value to those new in marketing, it is not suggested for those with more than 1 year of marketing experience. Hats off to the author for getting it published expecially considering today's copy write laws.

        5 out of 5 stars Supurb Formula.......2001-01-03

This is a great book with immediate tools to use. The universal Formula is what I will implement in my next marketing meeting. I also like the return on investment part, she calls it the payback axiom. I had to tweek it to fit our industry but it was still useful. This book really does only take 2 hours to read! A lot of it was review for me and an affirmation that I am on the right track. It was worth the refresher.

5 out of 5 stars Bottom Line: I am already using the ideas!.......2000-12-22

As a Regional Sales Manager that handles Global 5000 accounts I am always looking for an edge. I am already using some of the techniques taught in 12 Rules. I read the book in a week and have been pleased with implementing some of the rules. I also needed an additional training tool for new reps, and this is great to get them started and will fit well with Strategic Selling as they progress in their careers.

        5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading, it's a fast read.......2000-12-22

I got a lot of ideas from this book. The plan is simple and it makes sense. Marketing is not always about the "newest" idea, but rather re-evaluating what you are currently doing and implementing it in a different way for better results. I found it to be a good value. There's a lot of books out there, but this one was fast and fun to read especially the last chapter that talks about companies that screwed up their marketing campaigns. I do not agree with one of the negative comments on this site, this really is a good book for marketing folks at any level.

          Book Description

The author presents the theory of portfolio choice from a new perspective, recommending decision rules that have advantages over those currently used in theory and practice. Portfolio choice theory relies on expected values. Goodall argues that this dependence has a historical basis and argues that current decision rules are inadequate for most portfolio choice situations. Drawing on econometric solutions proposed for the problem of forecasting outcomes of a chance experiment, the author defines adequacy criteria, and proposes adequate decision rules for a variety of situations.

            Book Description

`The book reaches well beyond an evaluation of the immediate public choice consequences of operating under alternative voting rules. . . . This book offers insights into the dynamics of electoral reform and the political consequences of such reform that should fascinate all serious students of public choice and political science.'

            - From the foreword by Charles K. Rowley, The Locke Institute and George Mason University

The design of an electoral system is fundamental to any democracy. It is through electoral systems that the commitment of a society to a political system is achieved. The peculiarities of an electoral system assume significant importance in periods in which democratic polities seem caught between a crisis of confidence in their representative systems and mass apathy over the product of government - as has recently occurred in Italy.

Electoral rules constrain available choice alternatives and therefore have profound effects on governance of a country since different electoral rules generate different outcome patterns even with no change in the identity of candidates. The two most common electoral schemes are proportional representation and plurality. The theoretical debate concerning these two systems is of intense interest not least because of the importance of finding a stable, democratic and representative institutional structure that can be employed worldwide.

This topical book analyzes the change of electoral rules in Italy from proportional representation toward plurality. While Italy is used as the illustrative case, the analysis has far-ranging theoretical and practical implications, and will therefore be of interest to academics and researchers of political economy, constitutionalism and public choice.

            Book Description

In the Web world, nothing will ever be the same. The Internet is changing the balance of power between consumers, the companies they buy from, and the social and political institutions they interact with. Corporations and institutions have only a small window in which to learn new rules of engagement, or risk being barred from the game. Veteran technology journalist Tom Murphy forecasts the changes to come in shopping, finance, media, healthcare, entertainment, and gadgetry. Supplementing his informed predictions are conversations with visionary business leaders such as Barry Diller, Andy Grove, and Jerry Yang.

5 out of 5 stars What the Net Will Be When It Finally Grows Up!.......2003-09-25

Wow! It's great to find a book that takes such an intelligent, long-term view of the Internet. As we know now, it wasn't all about the dot.com's that have now gone bust. And what is happening now is only that -- what is happening now. In "Web Rules," the author looks at what the Internet is likely to become as it matures a decade from now -- and it's something very different from what we've seen to this point. So far, he looks like he's on target. His insights, and those of the luminaries he interviews, show a very deep understanding of media and, most especially, how the Internet is likely to change the rules of business. We're already seeing some of this, but as the book points out, there's lots more to come in the next decade. This book is a roadmap for the curvy superhighway ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Particularly relevant right now.......2001-06-02

This book is easy and entertaining to read , really informative without being over-techno or relying on business jargon like "visioning" and "mission statement." The author's insights are refreshing, explaining in concrete terms that companies need to compete and keep their customers, not just put something on the Web and hope it floats. The insights on customer expectations of the Web are particularly relevant, and particularly so right now as people in the Web business are learning sobering truths about business realities. Much of what Murphy writes about, and his interviewees talk about, is coming to pass.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for aspiring e-commerce entrepreneurs........2000-08-04

This survey of how the Internet is changing how customers make choices provides interviews with a range of modern thinkers and social workers; from Paul Erdman and Mike Bloomberg to Trip Hawkins and Jerry Brown. Web Rules is a fascinating survey of market forces and Internet operation impacts upon them.

            4 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2000-07-03

this book can easily be read in one sitting. the writing style is quite entertaining probably owing to the fact that the author is a seasoned journalist. as the book imparts time and time again, the customer returns with a vengance as he sets the web rules of the net. with information readily available, the customer now holds the power. the book tells of how the merger mania has put the mom and pop stores out of business. how these stores really knew the meaning of individualized customer service. but times are changing and the forces of the new economy are upon us. now we have virtual malls and the customer is once again treated like a king. the book has also other interesting insights on the effect of the network economy such as its chapters on gadgets(mobile phones, bots), interactivity, finance, and medicine. it ends with interviews which read like a whos who in the e-conomy such as jerry yang, andy grove and mike bloomberg. although its a good read, for those who are more interested in making it easier for the customer to do business with you(customer focused strategies) you may be more inclined to pick up the customer.com book of patricia b.seybold.

5 out of 5 stars great for anyone running an online business.......2000-06-17

Web Rules does a great job of focusing on the importance of understanding consumer's expectations in running an online business. I've worked at a number of e-commerce and consumer web services over the past few years, and the biggest mistake I've seen is either not understanding what the consumer wants or not listening to consumer feedback after launch. Especially since the web really has changed what consumers want and expect from a business. Competition is brutal and consumers can find the best prices instantly through shopping engines, so businesses must understand their customers in order to compete. This book did a really nice job helping me step back and get a big picture view of how customers interact with businesses online.

                        Book Description

Accenture, one of the world's largest consulting firms with 75,000 employees and offices in 47 countries, is growing and downsizing at the same time. The fluctuating economy has hit Accenture just as hard as its competitors (if not harder—Accenture is one of just a few public consulting firms), and between summer 2001 and summer 2002, the firm announced 2,500 job cuts. But Accenture also promises a net increase of 8,000 employees worldwide by the end of 2003, and insiders are bullish about the company's ability to bounce back. That said, how can you best prepare for your interviews with this consulting giant? The answers are all here, in the WetFeet Insider Guide on Accenture.

                        5 out of 5 stars A great preparation tool.......2003-04-10

This guide was helpful in giving me more than what's on the Accenture corporate website. I really liked getting all of the advice from insiders at the company including recruiters and consultants alike. I wasn't sure at first whether this would give me what I was looking for --which is a broad view of the company, both good and bad. But it did! and I'm glad to see that it is well-rounded. Sure Accenture has had rough times, but who hasn't in the industry? And it's great to hear they're hiring so aggressively for 2003. I'm hoping I'll be one of the candidates to get an offer. I'll certainly call on the tips and info I've gleaned from this guide to hose the competition!

5 out of 5 stars Great interview preparation.......2003-03-04

This guide was packed with information that you can't find anywhere else. I went into my first interview full of information and knowing what to expect, and feel like it all went really well. I've already been called in for a second interview, thanks to my thorough preparation with this guide. I strongly recommend it.

Do you want to know what a job in this industry is really like-and do you want to know it quickly? WetFeet has the best research (and writing) team in the business. WetFeet guides are the industry standard--based on thousands of insider interviews and written with humor and skill, our materials are recognized by candidates and companies alike as the insider guide of choice.

Andersen Consulting is the biggest consulting firm in the world, and still growing like gangbusters; the firm's revenues grew by more than 20% annually every year from 1994 to 1997. Formed in 1989, the firm very quickly moved to the head of the industry both by concentrating in its traditional strength in IT consulting and by moving into other fields--management consulting, human resources consulting, and outsourcing, among others--in a big way. Now it's trying to break its ties with its parent firm, the tax and accounting giant Arthur Andersen. Will it succeed in its quest for independence? Will the battle with Arthur Andersen have any effect on the job seeker? How can you best prepare for your interviews with this consulting King Kong? The answers are all here, in the new WetFeet.com Insider Guide.

                        2 out of 5 stars Old Info.......2001-06-17

This is an old book with generic information. The only mention of the change to Accenture is a sticker on the cover. For the high price, I expected more information on the particular business lines they cover, the job rankings and levels, more specifics on everything. I learned more about the company from their own website...

5 out of 5 stars Got the job!!.......1999-03-11

This obviously wasn't the only reason I was just got an offer from AC, but it really helped.

                        5 out of 5 stars Legal Toolkit.......2002-02-20

I felt that this book provided a firm clear basis to write a contract to license your invention. I have to agree that it did little but rehash the usual ways of marketing your invention. Perhaps the book should have be titled: Write a good contract for licensing your invention.

I thought this book took you nicely through each step in the licensing process explain your legal rights and the legal rights of others in detail. I enjoyed the book and thought it was easy to read despite covering alot of legalese.

4 out of 5 stars What to do when license is in hand.......2000-05-26

This book is heavy on the legal information (it's from Nolo Press) but light on what to do to get an invention licensed. Has good legal advice which would be a use to any invcentor who has a deal ready to go, but not much help on evaluating the proct for license or how to get a licenseing deal to come about. Would recommend this book only for those who have already made prototypes, contacted licensees, and are ready to start writing contracts - then get this useful book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about the licensing process.......1998-10-24

"Take Your Great Idea to Market With a Solid Legal Agreement" promises this new book. The promise is fulfilled with plenty of solid details about the licensing process. This is not about venturing or bringing your own invention to market, but about protecting your property rights while licensing the invention. This would include inventors who work for companies that may want to license their work.
