A great overview for beginners.......2005-11-08
I am a real estate attorney and recommend this book to anyone who is new to the purchase and sale of real estate. This book is a clearly written explanation of the residential real estate purchase process from contract through closing. It will explain the terms used and the steps that must be taken, so that you will be able to understand what is happening and what has to be done. That being said, I would no more recommend that you rely on a self-help book to buy or sell your home, than I would recommend that you do your own electrical work. There is a lot at stake, and if you screw up, you will get burned. Read this book and hire competent professionals.
Good General Information.......2005-09-09
Interesting reading for those who are looking to buy or sell their own properties. Very general, but some valid points in contract creation.
Real Estate Contracts fully expalined.......2003-03-10
I understand that Attorney Mark Warda has written over 60 books on real estate and the law, and this is just one of those books. He dissects the real estate contract between the buyer and the seller going over each and every clause and explaining its meaning in layman's terms.
Also included in the book are 8 different forms. If you are represented by a competent and knowledgeable real estate attorney, then this book may not be necessary. But if you are buying and selling property without an attorney then this book is a must. The more property you buy and sell the more you need this book. On the other hand if you already have many settlements under your belt this book will not have many new ideas for you.
This book would most benefit the beginner or intermediate real estate investor. I also read another book by the same author on "Land Trusts" and got much more from that book.
Invaluable Tool for real estate investors.......2003-02-20
I have been interested in investing in real estate for a long time and felt confident with all aspects of it except for the contract. I didn't feel like paying a lawyer to draw up a contract that I didn't really understand and that was 9 pages long was the right answer. After reading this book I have started investing using my own contract and containing clauses and ideas presented in this book. My contracts have been reviewed and approved by real estate attorneys who never had a clue that the contract wasn't prepared by an attorney.
A fast, very practical reference for buyers or sellers.......1998-12-18
This book lets you choose how you want to set up your contract. It explains the pros and cons of each clause. Most lawyers would learn a lot from it but it is simple enough for anyone to understand. I loaned one from the library but decided I need one of my own, that's how good it is.

Book Description
This is the 4th volume in an international energy reference book series aimed at bringing together, in a concise form, the basic principles and the most relevant data concerning both the efficient use of energy in agriculture and the food industry and alternative energy sources for agriculture.
The theme of this volume is solar energy applications in agriculture. Since the 1960's the major industrial nations have faced an energy crisis; there is a realisation that fossil fuels exist in finite quantitities. In the 1970's and 80's, deposits of CO2 in the atmosphere have increased, arguably resulting in an increase in global warming. Utilisation of solar energy could contribute to the improvement of man's standard of living while helping to decrease the potential for disasterous earth warming. The application of solar energy in agriculture is, in the main, environmentally benign.
The purpose of this volume is to assist the solar e

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Desalination, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The processes of desalination and sea-salt production currently produce large quantities of by-product, in the form of brine and bitterns, which is generally regarded as waste. This article explores the scope for exploiting the hygroscopic salts occurring in these by-products - such as magnesium, calcium and sodium chloride - as desiccant solutions in a greenhouse cooling system. These solutions are compared to other liquid desiccants more conventionally used in solar-driven refrigeration: namely solutions of lithium chloride, lithium bromide and zinc chloride. To establish which properties are relevant, we discuss the relation of the properties of the liquid desiccant to the attributes of the greenhouse as a whole. A property of primary importance is hygroscopicity, as quantified by the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH). Further properties reviewed include cost, availability, density, viscosity, specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, heat of dilution, water absorption capacity, human- and ecotoxicity, and corrosivity. Calculations based on five locations (Tunis, Jiddah, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai and Bangkok) show that the liquid desiccant should have ERH @?50% to give improved cooling compared to both direct and indirect evaporative systems. Except for sodium chloride, all six salts considered meet this requirement. Magnesium chloride is the most abundant salt in seawater bitterns and both magnesium and calcium chloride stand out as being of low toxicity. Their hygroscopic properties, though inferior to those of the lithium and zinc salts, make them suitable for cooling of greenhouses (even if not of human dwellings). We envisage an integrated desalination and agricultural system, comprising a solar desalination plant supplying freshwater (for irrigation) and bitterns (for cooling) to greenhouses, enabling efficient water use and local crop production in hot climates.

Sue Robishaw takes an unusual approach in her examination of of homesteading. She converses with two imaginary characters, J. J. and CindyLou, to tell the story of Robishaw's and her husband's move to rural Northern Michigan nearly two decades ago. The three commiserate about the Robishaws' trials, learning experiences, and misconceptions. With the help of J. J. and CindyLou, Robishaw simply, often hilariously, tells her story and offers no one-size-fits-all approach to homesteading. She also describes, in great detail, gardening tips, how to construct a solar oven, recipes, ways to become more self-sufficient by growing your own food, how to build a simple structure such as a home or outbuilding, and how to deal with critters. While filled with practical how-to information, the real joy of Homesteading Adventures is the story of the Robishaws life and experiences, told with gentle humor and affection, and mercifully free of self-righteousness. It's a real treat to read.
Customer Reviews:
"The entire book is written in quotes with lots of exclamation points!".......2007-04-09
"I swear!"
"Really?!"
"Yes!"
"No, way!"
"The entire book! There are some chunks of interspersed instructional writing, but otherwise the entire book is written in bad dialogue between two fictitious characters! They're spunky and bright-eyed and new to homesteading and have lots of questions! So you get to read all about their adventures as though you're overhearing a conversation between them! And they say everything with exclamation points!"
"But, isn't that annoying and distracting?"
"Why yes, it is. I was disappointed because I'd heard this was a good primer with lots of helpful suggestions and ideas to help people see for themselves that a basic homesteading lifestyle is within reach for us all... but I honestly couldn't get past the third page."
"That's too bad."
"Yup."
Seriously. Three stars for allegedly having good info, but to be honest I couldn't actually read it.
Wonderful Introduction To "The Road Less Traveled"!.......2002-06-13
Adherents of the `60s counterculture back-to-the-land philosophy will find much to enjoy and savor in this humorous but fact-filled book on homesteading self-sufficiency. I am lucky enough to have had a personally autographed copy of author Sue Robishaw's wonderful book "Homesteading Adventures" sitting comfortably on one of my bookshelves for years. I recently re-read it, and found it as refreshing and as practical a guide to exploring the possibilities of walking on the self-sufficient side of the dirt road as one might find out there in the Ethernet. Miss Robishaw uses the device of two fictional neophytes to pose the important questions regarding how one begins the process of shifting gears and thought processes toward increasing levels of personal responsibility for living "off the grid". And, by the time one is through casually rummaging through the pages, you find that she has cracked more than a single smile or two onto your face while also relating to you a lot of important and useful data about the possibilities for living a less materialistic and more user-friendly alternative lifestyle.
In these days of ever greater complexity and ever more complete dependence on others for the woof and warp of our daily existence, for food, water, shelter, sewage, electricity, entertainment, transportation, and clothing, one is perhaps a bit startled to discover that we can each be much more actively and "proactively" involved in this process, that each of us can garner much of what we need to survive and prosper as human beings on the surface of the planet. It often comes as a surprise because many of us are so deeply embedded in the ethos of the material culture that surrounds us that we rarely are able to independently determine or recognize how many other alternative ways to live exist, and which are there for us to employ if we have the vision, nerve, and energy to do so. In her own way, the author helps us to come to this conclusion very quietly, gently, and with more than a little humor. She is well grounded, and along the way shows us how we can do everything from build our own cabin or earth home to how to make a small but eficient greenhouse to how to design, build, and erect a functioning windmill.
While Sue Robishaw is certainly not a self-sufficiency visionary like Scott and Helen Nearing ("The Good Life"), she does provide a vital and valuable service to the reader by offering a lot of practical lessons regarding how to begin and sustain one's journey toward greater personal responsibility for one's own way of living. It is said that many millions of Americans continue to examine the basis of their own lives with an inchoate and poorly articulated dissatisfaction with the materialistic way of life they are currently embroiled in. To the extent a single book can make a practical difference in helping such folk recognize, understand, and act on this alternative vision regarding the manner in which one lives his or her life, this book is a terrific aid and a practical how-to manual rolled into one paperback volume. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!
Ideas for homesteading in the frozen North.......2002-01-06
This book is a collection of ideas for homesteaders or others who want to live simply off the land. Robishaw describes a wide variety of projects and activities that she and her husband have done to survive and thrive that come with a minimum cost to the pocketbook and the environment. These include a windmill powered well, a solar powered electrical system, a solar cooker, a solar food dryer, outhouses, homemade wine and vinegar, gardening, saving seeds, and making maple syrup. Robishaw presents the information in the form of a series of dialogues between CindyLou and JJ, a pair of newcomers to the woods, and Sue, an old-hand at homesteading. The dialogues are meant to be cute and humorous, and perhaps lighten the tone of the text. However, I found them a bit tiresome and contrived in places. The book is not filled with detailed plans for constructing equipment, although there are a few useful diagrams. Instead, its value is in stirring up ideas in the minds of the readers, and giving encouragement to go ahead and try something new because it just might work. Set in Northern Michigan, it is especially relevant for readers from far northern climates.
Great Story!.......2000-04-12
This book was a joy to read. Tucked within the true-to-life and often humorous accounts of the fictional couple's move to ruraldom are excellent instructions and guidelines for homesteading.
I highly recommend this book, although I wouldn't advise its use as a primary resource for homesteading.
Book Description
Building successful start-ups was never quite as easy as it seemed, and the changing economic climate has raised the stakes, reduced the margin of error. New entrepreneurs can't stumble into wealth on the power of half-formed ideas, or turn dreams into reality without doing a lot of homework. It's time to get smart. This book teaches would-be entrepreneurs the skills they need to get through the venture capital process with companies that will survive to grow and succeed.
Rob Ryan, a pioneer in the high-tech industry, founded Ascend Communications in 1989, and throughout the nineties provided firms with the infrastructure they needed to keep up with the rapid growth of the Internet. At the beginning of 1999, Ascend was sold to Lucent for $25 billion. Since retiring from Ascend and starting Entrepreneur America, Ryan has helped launch a string of successful companies, including Virtmed, RightNow, and Virtual Ink. All provide electronic solutions to real-world problems, meet existingrather than manufacturedneeds, and save their customers time and money.
In Smartups, Ryan focuses on methods he's developed over the years for building a sustainable business that makes money. He emphasizes the importance of testing ideas on customers and making sure that a product offers something new and important. Recognizing a team's key competencies is crucial, Ryan says. He also finds it necessary to take certain steps at the correct stages of a company's inception. Smartups will show you how to turn your idea into a real product, take it to investors, and get your start-up started right.
Customer Reviews:
This is worth at least 7 stars. Great book & website.......2005-05-09
I discovered Rob Ryan's web site years ago (before this book or its previous 1st edition) when I was searching for information on startups using a web search engine. There I found a well researched set of slides that would-be entrepreneurs could use when presenting to venture capitalists. He had made them free for anyone to reference online.
The concept was that you, the budding entrepreneur who wanted his help, would prepare your presentation to him before you arrived. If he liked your business idea he would help. But he found that too many budding entrepreneurs hadn't thought things through or hadn't taken their new business idea far enough along (like not having any customers and or even a product or its prototype). So this web site with its slides would fulfill this information role, and also fulfill the role of filtering out bad ideas.
Previously the author had a back injury and resigned from his CEO role at Ascend. He had started a ranch in Montana to coach engineers, more than others, wanting to get tech start-ups going. He put the slide presentation online using Microsoft Powerpoint. This was quite novel at that time.
Over time he developed this book (1st and 2nd edition) which included his recommendation for the ideal slide presentation to prospective investors in startups. It now includes much other discussion on how he developed his philosophy on startups as well as detailed discussions on the startups he's been involved with since opening his ranch in Montana. It's filled with rules, opinions, wisdom and commonly-made mistakes by start-ups. This book is particularly informative on what the entrepreneur needs to do in the early startup stage.
The author is biased in the favor of high-technology startups with engineers at its core. His focus is helping these engineers start up a company that requires capital investments from people understanding the technology and from people who demand large results (10 : 1 is a standard expectation for a venture capital deal). This means the big Silicon Valley venture capitalists primarily.
The slides from his Entrepreneur America site are annotated with his discussions about how each slide helps the entrepreneur increase his odds of having a successful startup.
The big reason to read this book is to absorb the author's unique experience and the author's strong opinions on how to put together a startup having a high probability of success. He is very practical and blunt in his advice. This is not a theoretical book, but a book written by someone who has done it before, who has consulted with others who are doing it now, and someone who cares about start-up entrepreneurs as a group.
This should be required reading for all entrepreneurs starting up a high-tech or high-growth business and certainly for all students on entrepreneurial tracks in MBA programs.

In-your-face Entrepreneur Brainstorming.......2003-06-21
This is the newly released paperback version of Rob Ryan's earlier Entrepreneur America book. Great basic advice from a guy born in the Bronx and nurtured in the Valley who wnet on to found Ascend. Ryan pulls no punches in leading the reader (and his select entrepreneurs) on asking the hard questions about their ideas, companies and products to determine a core value propostion (and if there is one!). Definitely a must-read for anyone wanting to start a new business regardless of whether you've done it once or ten times! (So where's my autographed edition, Rob?)
Boy isnýt Rob Ryan a really smart guy........2003-04-06
I was ultimately disappointed by this book. It spent too much time emphasizing how incredibly smart a guy Rob Ryan is. It seemed very repetitious. Yes, it is written in a lighthearted style, but overall seemed like it only had enough content for a magazine article. He's been mentioned in Inc. magazine several times, which is what prompted me to buy it, but I didn't really learn that much from the book. One of the least useful of my many books on entrepreneurship. It does have a nice cover.
Ascend founder and evangelist - who better to ask?.......2003-01-30
Joining Ascend in 1991 was a risky move for me. Who the heck were they, anyway?
Then I met Rob.
The rest is history.
I've always enjoyed telling that story (usually a much longer and funnier version) to anyone interested in the Ascend tale.
The book that we are reviewing here is in typical Rob style. I can not imagine anyone else writing it this way. It's just him. "Do the Dogs like the Dog Food" - if you ever spent any time chatting with Rob, you'd easily guess that this was one of his quips.
Even if I had not read this book (which I have done a few times now), I'd probably still recommend it. Rob was, and still is, an entrepreneurs entrepreneur.
I only wish I could find him again in a new guise here in Silicon Valley - and relive those Ascend days.
Nothing New - This is a renamed version of 2001 Version.......2002-11-21
This is nothing more than a renamed paperback version of Rob's 2001 "Entrepreneur America: Lessons from Inside Rob Ryan's High-Tech Start-Up Boot Camp". The origional book gets a 5 star rating from me. (...)this was promoted as a new book, not a new printing with a different name. If you already have the earlier edition, don't waste your money on this one. If you don't, buy it and learn from Rob. My criticism is the lack of disclosure that this is a reprint and the false expectations that were built from the advertising that this actually offered new content from an author I greatly respect and will automatically purchase any of his new books.
