    Book Description

Media Economics: Theory and Practice focuses on the basic principles of economics in the business sector and applies them to contemporary media industries. This text examines the process of media economics decision making through an exploration of key topics, such as industrial restructuring, regulatory constraints upon media operations, and changing economic value, providing key insights into media business activities. With the structure and value of media industries changing rapidly and sometimes dramatically, this text moves beyond a basic documentation of historical patterns to help readers understand the mechanics of change, offering insight into the processes reproducing contemporary trends in media economics.

Thoroughly updated in this third edition, Media Economics focuses on the primary concerns of media economics, the techniques of economic and business analysis, and the overall characteristics of the media environment; and explores contemporary business practices within specific media industries, including newspaper, magazine, television, cable, movie, radio advertising, music, and online industries. New for this edition are chapters on the advertising, book publishing, and magazine publishing industries. Chapters contributed by expert scholars and researchers provide substantial discussions of the crucial topics and issues in the media industry sectors, and emphasize both domestic and international businesses.

Offering a thorough examination of the economic factors and forces concerning the media industries, Media Economics is appropriate for use as a course text for advanced media management and economics students. It also serves as an indispensable reference for scholars and researchers in media business arenas.

      Book Description

Leading experts present cutting-edge ideas and current research on product placement!

The Handbook of Product Placement in the Mass Media: New Strategies in Marketing Theory, Practice, Trends, and Ethics is the first serious book in English to examine the wider contexts and varied texts of product placement, related media marketing strategies, and audience impacts. The contributors are national experts in a variety of mass media specialties-history, law, and ethics (both media ethics and medical ethics); cultural and critical analysis; content analysis and effects; visuality; marketing, advertising, public relations, and promotion; and digital technology and futures.

This first-of-its-kind book features interviews with leading critics and proponents of product placement (including the Pulitzer Prize-winning media critic of the LA Times and the Director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington, DC). You'll also find a lively roundtable of many of the major contributors (in Q&A format), a review of a recent video on product placement, and a helpful resource guide to publications and Web sites that further enhance the value of the book.

      From the editor:
The influence of product placement is perceived as so great that its detractors have sought federal regulation of the practice. This book examines the wider contexts and varied texts of product placement and related mass media marketing strategies. The contributors represent a rich variety of methodological approaches and viewpoints, which should stimulate readers to think about this complex issue in an appropriately multifaceted fashion and to triangulate their own study.

The Handbook of Product Placement in the Mass Media: New Strategies in Marketing Theory, Practice, Trends, and Ethics presents careful research, expert opinion, and insiders' perspectives on:

product placement's historical context—from its origins in early radio and television programming to the evolution of the practice and the advent of "advertainment" and brand promotion via online computer games
the evolution of product placement in Hollywood—with a trend analysis of the 15 top-grossing motion pictures of 1977, 1987, and 1997
the use of product placement to generate additional production revenue for motion pictures
brand synergy and building brand identity
legal aspects of product placement—how it relates to the First Amendment and to the Supreme Court's commercial speech doctrine
ethical issues related to product placement, product integration, and video insertion

. . . plus fascinating case studies focusing on important aspects of product placement:

its use in movie and television programs in general, and in the 2000 movie Cast Away in particular
its use as a marketing technique for medical products
the impact upon brand recognition of adding an audible reference to a visually prominent brand placement
the inclusion of brand names in book storylines
the impact upon viewers of the use of fake (generic, fictitious) products in "realistic" films

              Book Description

Media, Technology and Copyright is an interdisciplinary work that applies economic theory to central topical issues in the law of intellectual property. Based on the author's professional experience as a professor, lecturer, and consultant, the volume represents the first full-length consideration of the diverse topics of law and copyright by a professional economist.

Opening chapters of the book involve issues in the analog domain, including the economics of infringement, fair use, property damages, liability rules, compulsory licensing, and publicity rights. Chapters on digital rights include topics related to software, databases, and cyber-law, including digital rights management, file-sharing, music licensing, deep linking, framing, and contributory infringement. The author also brings economic insights to competition law for intellectual property, including antitrust, copyright misuse, and applications in the European Union.

Written in non-technical language for an interdisciplinary audience of lawyers, economists, students, artists, and professionals in the content industry, the book provides a comprehensive study for anyone interested in the issues surrounding intellectual property rights.

                  Book Description

In this unique book, Thomas Mickey looks at public relations from a humanistic definition that is focused on understanding publics rather than controlling them or predicting their behavior. Most public relations books assume several theories, which are more positivist in their approach, because they view public relations as a science. Sociodrama moves beyond that assumption to take public relations as a form of interaction. In this application of the theory of Sociodrama to public relations, Mickey describes Sociodrama's focus on language as the way to constitute the organization rather than as a tool to get something done. The author explains how the theory of Sociodrama proposes elements and levels of a drama present in our language. His study makes use of 2 qualitative research methodologies: focus groups and Q sorting, with a whole chapter of the book devoted to case studies. Mickey's study allows students to obtain a different view of public relations and makes the reader aware of the drama in the language of the organizations and the language of the public. The practitioner can use the knowledge gained from this book to interact in a way which builds a relationship with the publics, talking "with" them, and not "to" them.

                    Book Description

Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice, which builds upon the author's seminal 1980 book, Telecommunications Demand: A Review and Critique, provides comprehensive analyses of the determinants and structure of telecommunications demands in the United States and Canada. Theory and empirical application receive equal emphasis with a heavy focus on the developments and econometric research since the divestiture of AT&T in 1984. For the first time, a detailed theoretical analysis of business telecommunications demand on subscriber and usage consumption externalities is presented.
Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice is without peer in the documentation and analysis of price elasticities of demand for telecommunications services. This new book also includes a comprehensive bibliography with over 500 entries related to telecommunications demand and pricing. Telecommunications Demand will appeal to both academic and consulting economists, telecommunications industry analysts and regulators, and to teachers of courses in applied econometrics and regulated industries.

It does the job, not only by looking at the economic factors involved, but also at political, legal, social, and cultural factors—all in a very creative and readable manner." —Richard Swedberg, Cornell University

"If the nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought a dramatic nationalization of government-backed currencies across the world, does the euro's introduction in 2002 write finis to the era of nationalism? Here, superbly informed observers of European politics, economy, and social life debate that question from multiple perspectives, not only documenting the depth of the euro's challenge, but also mapping alternative futures for Europe. An illuminating intervention in a vital conversation." —Viviana A. Zelizer, Lloyd Cotsen '50 Professor of Sociology, Princeton University

"This is one of the most interesting and original books in the burgeoning field of EU studies to have emerged in recent years. Its emphasis on the likely social and cultural—not just political and economic—impact of the euro at the national, subnational, and supranational levels is timely and refreshing. Tighly edited, this book should be essential reading for professional and amateur EU-watchers alike." —Desmond Dinan, Jean Monnet Professor of Public Policy, George Mason University

"I know of no other books on the academic market that deal with the impact of the Euro on the political, economic, and social fabric of Europe. This volume is currently one-of-a-kind." —Jeffrey Anderson, Georgetown University

The Year of the Euro examines the wide-ranging importance of Europe's new single currency beyond its impact on financial markets and the economy itself. On January 1, 2002, when the new currency began to circulate in the twelve participating member states of the European Union, the long move toward a supranational European framework for trade and institutions finally entered the fabric of daily life for hundreds of millions of citizens. The contributing authors to this highly readable and interdisciplinary volume offer a variety of perspectives on this extraordinary episode in currency change and European convergence. The book's essays offer the assessments of leading scholars of European affairs—from the fields of history, political science, sociology, and law—as to whether the new common currency will reshape the continent's cultures, societies and political systems and, if so, in what ways. The discussions and debates found in these pages will inform those, within and outside academia, who are interested in the future of Europe and in the meaning of national currencies. The volume is also suitable for classroom use in courses on the European Union, cultural and economic sociology, comparative politics, and contemporary Europe.

                          Book Description

When the Euro was introduced in the EU, the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) was one of the cornerstones of the architecture of fiscal policy in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). But the discussion about the necessity and functioning of the specific SGP fiscal rule never stopped since then. The call for a reform of the pact got momentum since many Member States of the euro area broke the regulations of the pact at least once. The reform of the SGP succeeded in 2005.

In this book, renowned lawyers and economists from all over Europe present their views about the legal and economic foundations of the SGP and its performance so far. The major part of the book deals with the economic problems with the pact, its theoretical basis, possible improvements and the implications of the reformed SGP. The book has the advantage not only to report and analyze the experiences with the old SGP but it offers also a first ex ante assessment of the future aspects of the reformed SGP.

These and other highly relevant issues make this book indispensable for everybody who is concerned with European integration and the functioning of EMU in particular.

This book contains the proceedings of the seminar held in Washington, D.C., on March 17-18, 1997, cosponsored by the IMF and Fondation Camille Gutt. Conference participants discussed implications of European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) on exchange and financial markets, and consequently on the activities of market participants and private and official institutions. The five main themes of the seminar were the characteristics of the euro and its potential role as an international currency, EMU and international policy coordination, EMU and the relationship between the IMF and its EMU members, lessons of European monetary integration for the international monetary system, and the transition to EMU.

Currency Competition and Foreign Exchange Markets is a major new theoretical and empirical study of international currencies that focuses on the role the Euro (the future European currency) will play in the international monetary and financial system, along with the US dollar and the Japanese yen. In contrast to much of the existing literature that approaches the subject from a macroeconomic perspective, Philipp Hartmann develops a theoretical model that uses game theory, time series and panel econometrics, and links financial markets analysis with transaction cost economics. The results are presented with reference to political, historical and institutional considerations, and provide accessible answers to policy makers, business people and scholars world wide.

In this volume, Robert Mundell's pioneering theory of optimum currency areas is revisited, with experts from the IMF, the BIS, the European Investment Bank, academia, European think tanks, and the Bank of Israel looking at its current practical applications, especially in the context of the forthcoming European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Robert Mundell himself offers an update to help in assessing the implications and consequences of EMU.

                                          Book Description

Why have the states of Europe agreed to create an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a single European currency? What will decide the fate of this bold project? This book explains why monetary integration has deepened in Europe from the Bretton Woods era to the present day. McNamara argues that the development of a neoliberal economic policy consensus among European leaders in the years after the first oil crisis was crucial to stability in the European Monetary System and progress towards EMU. She identifies two factors, rising capital mobility and changing ideas about the government's proper role in monetary policymaking, as critical to the neoliberal consensus but warns that unresolved social tensions in this consensus may provoke a political backlash against EMU and its neoliberal reforms.

McNamara's findings are relevant not only to European monetary integration, but to more general questions about the effects of international capital flows on states. Although this book delineates a range of constraints created by economic interdependence, McNamara rejects the notion that international market forces simply dictate government policy choice. She demonstrates that the process of neoliberal policy change is a historically dependent one, shaped by policymakers' shared beliefs and interpretations of their experiences in the global economy.

The book itself is a well structured process of developing a business plan that has served me well. By adding the downloadable software, it greatly enhances the process, making it easy to use and improves the likelihood that users will create a professional business plan. It is so much easier to tailor something than to start from scratch. I think the book is an excellent value.

                                            Book Description

The new generation of international businessmen, unlike their old by-the-seat-of-their-pants forerunners, must play the game differently. They need a detailed business plan and an insider's knowledge of financing and networking.

A business plan is simply a road map, a blueprint, for the entrepreneur. Without it, no banker or lender will even talk to a business person seeking capital. That's pretty much the same in the USA, as it is in Russia, France or Singapore.

While most of us find that creating a business plan-a realistic, professional blueprint of our planned or existing business-is an insurmountable chore, the job has just become easier.

The International Instant Business Plan is a 250 page guide by experts Gustav Berle, Ph.D. and Paul Kirschner, who have a combined 100 years of business experience around the globe. It takes the entrepreneur through 12 Quick and Easy Steps to a Successful Business both here and abroad. A detailed section relates how to work with bankers and use one's Business Plan to raise capital-while over 100 pages detail business opportunities in 35 countries.
