    Book Description

In classical life insurance mathematics the obligations of the insurance company towards the policy holders were calculated on artificial conservative assumptions on mortality and interest rates. However, this approach is being superseded by developments in international accounting and solvency standards coupled with other advances enabling a market-based valuation of risk, i.e., its price if traded in a free market. The book describes these new approaches, and is the first to explain them in conjunction with more traditional methods. The various chapters address specific aspects of market-based valuation. The exposition integrates methods and results from financial and insurance mathematics, and is based on the entries in a life insurance company's market accounting scheme. The book will be of great interest and use to students and practitioners who need an introduction to this area, and who seek a practical yet sound guide to life insurance accounting and product development.

This was the first time I was tempted to send a book back to Amazon and get a refund. This book delivered plenty of "sizzle" about Swiss annuities, but didn't give me much "steak."

The authors spent significant (wasted) print space trying to sell the reader on the general concept of Swiss annuities. You don't have to sell me on the general concept of Swiss annuities. If I wasn't interested, I wouldn't have bought the book. Like any investment, I want to see the details and an objective, well reasoned analysis before I plunk down the cash. I'll use the information that you provide to make an educated decision. In my opinion, the authors failed to provide enough information. They also failed to temper their (perhaps justified) enthusiasm for Swiss annuities. So what I was left with was little more than an enthusiastic sales pitch. One that cost me $25.

Some questions I would have liked to have seen answered: What if the Swiss franc! doesn't continue to be a favored currency relative to the dollar, how would this change the equation? (a relevant question since the Swiss franc HAS dropped to about SF 1.50 to $1.00 USD, and the prevailing opinion of European analysts is that they expect it to drop some more this year) What about variable annuities offered by Swiss insurance companies? What are the products offered by the companies you recommend? What makes them recommended? What makes the companies different? All in all, the only really useful information for me was at the end of the book where they provided names and addresses of recommended Swiss insurance companies. If you go and buy a recent copy of PROFIT magazine (I can't remember but I think it was the July issue) you can get the exact same information. Save your money, buy the magazine.

In all fairness to the a! uthors, I do have to thank them for their efforts to public! ize a relatively obscure investment device that shows some real potential.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential information on a cutting-edge investment product.......1998-07-09

Better than Gold is the first book-length study of one of today's hottest investment possibilities. In clear, detailed chapters, Bill McCord and Donald Moine offer essential information on how to evaluate and invest in Swiss annuities. In brief, McCord and Moine believe passionately that Swiss annuities provide investors with an outstanding opportunity to grow and protect their money. This Swiss "safety net" allows funds to grow at reasonable rates of return.. At the same time, it protects funds from lawsuits and creditors. It seems like an unbeatable combination. For many investors, it will be. McCord and Moine also provide a detailed analysis of who will benefit most from investing in Swiss annuities, and the place of these annuities in a balanced portfolio. The iron-clad protection offered by Swiss privacy laws, for instance, means that professionals at high risk of lawsuits should be investing in this product. Swiss Annuities are also among the most flexible in this class of investment, and Moine and McCord are careful to provide thorough disclosure of the terms and conditions governing their purchase or redemption. Overall, the book will be worth well more than its cover price to investors seeking full information or financial professionals seeking the best counsel for their clients.

This report presents the results of that analysis. It describes the supplemental health benefits options available to Medicare beneficiaries in the demonstration sites, reviews the theoretical literature on risk selection, and develops hypotheses regarding risk selection that can be tested in the evaluation of the demonstration. It also suggests analytic methods for measuring selection and estimating the extent to which it may occur for enrollments in the FEHBP demonstration. The methods are designed to estimate (1) the extent to which adverse selection occurs in Medicare supplemental insurance enrollments for the DoD FEHBP demonstration, and (2) how much effect selection has on DoD health care costs for Medicare-eligible beneficiaries.

              Book Description

The theme of this book is the management of life insurers using techniques drawn from the field of finance. The importance of financial management has increased greatly in recent years, paralleling the growth in competition within the financial services industry. This competitive environment reflects an increasing financial sophistication among insurance consumers, as well as the blurring of the lines that traditionally separated different types of financial institutions. To succeed in today's business environment, insurers must use financial techniques such as asset--liability management, financial hedging, futures, and options. They must also be increasingly precise in measuring the tradeoffs between risk and return in both their asset and product portfolios.

              Book Description

Based on extensive original research this work explores the attitudes of Japanese employees towards their work, their company and on related issues. Based on extensive original research inside a Japanese insurance company (C-Life), which subsequently went bankrupt, the book shows that attitudes towards lifetime employment, company loyalty and the other characteristics of Japanese working life, which are often portrayed in stereotype form in the West, are in fact more complicated than is at first apparent.

              5 out of 5 stars Riveting stuff!.......2006-01-13

Don't ask how I came to be reading this, as I know nothing about Japan, anthropology, or business studies. But I was hooked from the start. It's a fascinating trawl through life in a large Japanese company, which makes "Lad's Army" look like Butlins: if the employees survive the brutal totalitarian discipline of the training centre, the "voluntary" weekend working hours, and the "entirely non-compulsory" karaoke outings, they'll probably succumb to the imaginative bullying of their peers. Yet all is not well in the company as Japan's economy crumbles, and for the first time in a generation the samurai-like code of the white-collar worker is in serious jeopardy. All this could be fearsomely academic, but the author illustrates everything with anecdotes of her own experiences as an employee at "C-Life", and also with extensive quotes from the other employees - in which we see their habit of repeating the "company line" ("How I love this company! I love it even though they have asked me to "voluntarily retire!") breaking down in the face of their need to say what they *really* think. It's written in an interesting and lively style with a minimum of jargon. Although this book is doubtless of great interest to anthropologists, business students, and those interested in Japan, I think it should also be fascinating to practically anyone who likes real stories of ordinary people caught in a bizarre Kafka-esque world of bureaucracy, jargon, and perverted values - a world that is all the more poignant for its transience.

Monetary policy has become one of the most contested areas of modern economics. Governments have come to see prudent monetary policy as essential to the control of inflation and hence to sustained economic growth, yet the processes by which this can be translated into practice remain controversial. In this volume, a wide range of leading policy makers and practitioners reflect on the aims and objectives of monetary policy and on what it can achieve.

PLUNKETT'S CONSULTING INDUSTRY ALMANAC, the first edition of our guide to the consulting field, is designed as a general source for researchers of all types.

The data and areas of interest covered are intentionally broad, from the various types of businesses involved in consulting, to the globalization of the consulting industry, to an in-depth look at the major firms (which we call Ã,“THE CONSULTING 200Ã,”) within the many sectors that make up the consulting industry. Our definition of the types of businesses involved in consulting is applied in a liberal sense. Accordingly, this book includes traditional management consulting and human resources consulting firms; companies involved in IT, e-commerce or marketing consulting; as well as consultancies in such areas as manufacturing, logistics and transportation. In addition, we have added companies that combine engineering, design, outsourcing or facilities management with consulting services. We have also included companies that perform research and development functions combined with consulting services, along with major manufacturers that provide consulting services to their OEM (original equipment manufacturer) clients.

This reference book is especially intended to assist with market research, strategic planning, employment searches, contact or prospect list creation (be sure to see the export capabilities of the accompanying CD-ROM that is available to book and eBook buyers) and financial research, and as a data resource for executives and students of all types.

PLUNKETT'S CONSULTING INDUSTRY ALMANAC takes a rounded approach for the general reader and presents a complete overview of the consulting field.

THE CONSULTING 200 (the actual count is 230 firms) is our unique grouping of the biggest, most successful corporations in all segments of the consulting industry. Tens of thousands of pieces of information, gathered from a wide variety of sources, have been researched and are presented in a unique form that can be easily understood. This section includes thorough indexes to THE CONSULTING 200, by geography, industry, sales, brand names, subsidiary names and many other topics. (See Chapter 4.)

Especially helpful is the way in which PLUNKETT'S CONSULTING INDUSTRY ALMANAC enables readers who have no business background to readily compare the financial records and growth plans of consulting companies and major industry groups. YouÃ,Â'll see the mid-term financial record of each firm, along with the impact of earnings, sales and strategic plans on each companyÃ,Â's potential to succeed.

No other source provides this bookÃ,Â's easy-to-understand comparisons of growth, expenditures, technologies, corporations, research and many other items of importance. The information within is crucial to people of all types who may be studying this industry, one of the most prestigious sectors in the world of business today.

By scanning the data groups and the unique indexes, you can find the information that best fits your personal research needs. The most significant major companies are profiled and then ranked using several different groups of specific criteria. Which firms are the biggest employers? Which companies earn the most profits? These things and much more are easy to find.

In addition to individual company profiles, a thorough analysis of trends in all consulting sectors is provided. These trends include the use of internal consultants and the changing nature of consulting assignments and expectations. This bookÃ,Â's job is to help you sort through easy-to-understand summaries of todayÃ,Â's trends in a quick and effective manner.

                                    Book Description

Though other books have been written about the small business community and the struggle to succeed, few of the actual players have been consulted, those who have realized their cherished dreams and have succeeded in business. Phelan talked with and observed the owners of successful small businesses and distilled their ideas into an easily understandable book. Not surprisingly, they all agree on some fundamental concepts, none of which is complicated, and few of which are found in textbooks. Phelan has observed the "startup" process for years and answers questions that neophyte entrepreneurs normally confront before going into their own business-what are the risks, and what can be expected? As the world's economic structures change, we hear more about the absence of job satisfaction, inadequate compensation, lack of job security, and a whole basketful of other concerns that are discussed daily. Now is the time to take action, and Phelan's book will show you how to! plan for that first business venture and answer those important questions about what business best suits you, how to obtain financing, and how to manage your inventory and bookkeeping. Phelan believes that the American dream need not be just a dream. You can move from dream to reality by simply making the decision to take control of your life. Phelan's book will assist you in making that fateful decision about going into business. The correct choice could make the difference between independence, wealth, and personal comfort. The choice is simple-you can work for your own benefit or work for the benefit of someone else.
