      Book Description

Resource Allocation Mechanisms derives the general welfare properties of systems in which individuals are motivated by self-interest. Satisfactory outcomes will emerge only if individual incentives are harnessed by means of a communication and payoff process, or mechanism, involving every agent. Professor Campbell employs a formal and abstract model of a mechanism that brings into prominence the criteria by which the performance of an economy is to be judged. The mechanism approach is used to prove some fundamental theorems about the possibility of designing an economic system satisfying the criteria. It also establishes a way of thinking about economic issues that is becoming increasingly useful in special branches of economics, such as industrial organization and public finance. This book can be viewed as two different texts: one constitutes an introduction to the theory of mechanism design and the other is a treatment of welfare economics with conventional emphasis on Pareto optimality as well as providing substantial material on incentives, uncertainty, and existence of equilibrium.

      Book Description

In this book Bernard Salanié studies situations where competitive markets fail to achieve a collective optimum and the interventions used to remedy these so-called market failures. He includes discussions of theories of collective decision making, as well as elementary models of public economics and industrial organization. Although public economics is traditionally defined as the positive and normative study of government action over the economy, Salanié confines himself to microeconomic aspects of welfare economics; he considers taxation and the effects of public spending only as potential remedies for market failures. He concludes with a discussion of the theory of general equilibrium in incomplete markets.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent complement and starting point.......2002-02-16

In this extremely elegant and condensed work, Salanie once again provides a great externality to his readers (continuing after "The Economics of Contracts"): at the end it leaves a unequivocal desire to dive deeper in the subject.

Limitations? As mentioned in the introduction, the book is extracted from a series of lectures the author gave; lets say, they are great lectures but without the session of Q&A (questions and answers). Therefore, there is little communication with the reader's questions, the reader is required to investigate more in his/her own, e.g. no end of chapter problems or things like those.

In short, I will strongly recommended it along with the traditional material of a General Equilibrium course (e.g. Mas-Colell et.al.). But do not expect a treatise, it is more a general overview.

          Book Description

In this book the reader is provided with an overview of the most interesting ideas in Competitive General Equilibrium Theory as well as Welfare Economy. In doing so, the author adopts a methodological approach of a closed and inter-related system where all variables are simultaneously determined. By using theorems of fixed point, revealed preference and local and global stability, the author proves the existence of unicity and stability. Furthermore, he analyses those situations where the competitive system does not allocate resources efficiently. In this sense, he examines allocation problems in regard to property rights, information problems and choice and negotiation problems. Finally, the text includes a chapter that presents a topical guide of questions related to Social Choice.

            Book Description

The book suggests a novel way how the effects of tax reforms especially in the field of capital income taxation can be measured by means of dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. Using a model calibrated to the German economy, the author evaluates and quantifies the effects of introducing a Dual Income Tax (DIT) in Germany. This tax reform is a currently hotly debated topic in Germany and has been suggested both by the German Council of Economic Advisors (GCEA) and by Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn. Thus, the book is of great interest not only for the academic but also for the business world and politics.

              Book Description

This book deals with the problems of redistribution if different kinds of taxes are used as instruments. It throws light on the equity, efficiency and insurance aspects of taxation, and treats the topic at a high theoretical level. Using two ordinal equity criteria, it is shown in the first part of the book that equity and efficiency cannot be reconciled in a general model. Even if in a more restricted model equitable states exist, they cannot be implemented using an income tax. Part two of the book scrutinizes the range for redistribution which remains in a first best world if there is imperfect information and only special signals can be observed such as labour supply, income, or both. The range of redistribution for these kinds of taxes is illustrated and compared. In part three, a situation under uncertainty where a tax works as an insurance is investigated. The structure of the optimal tax scheme for several welfare functions is explored. The results with respect to equity and the range of redistribution for different sorts of taxes are of particular interest. The approach to the subject is not really new, since standard microeconomic tools are used. The book's beneficial contribution lies in its presentation of new results with respect to the equity debate and to the incentive compatibility literature.

                  Book Description

One may have various reasons for compiling a volume of papers devoted to and inspired by Walras and Pareto. Pareto succeeded Walras in 1893 on the chair of Political Economy at the University of Lausanne. The relation between the two was not always without tensions, although Pareto, on the occasion of his 25 years jubilee celebration, at least in part, transferred the honours offered to him to Walras. Indeed, one may say that to a substantial extent important parts of the works of Pareto would not have been possible without the insights of Walras.

Both eminent scientists also have in common that the image of their inheritance professed to the common university trained economic scholars ('cutes') is a highly restricted caricature of the fullnes of their essential insights and contributions, and students of sociology or politicology may even finish their academic studies without ever having heard the name of Pareto.

What cutes "know" about Walras amounts to the following caricature. Walras developed the general economic equilibrium model, but did not care about uniqueness and stability of an equilibrium. It is a model with exchange and production only and it assumes an auctioneer who announces price vectors to establish the equilibrium. The model presupposes perfect information and is static and certainly not dynamic. Walras had a bias towards free competition and laisser faire and neglected monopoly and taxation.

Pareto is known by the cutes as the founding father of welfare economics. At best one is informed the notions of Pareto-optimality conditions and the first and second welfare theorems. But welfare economics is in general disappearing from the university research and teaching programs, replaced as it is by consumer and producer surpluses in the nowadays flourishing partial industrial economics programs.

In this thought-provoking collection, ten international scholars offer reflections and new interpretations of Walras’and Pareto’s unique contributions to topics as broad as the over-arching important of the social sciences, the development of modern microeconomics and (in particular) econometrics, political economy and public choice, and political sociology. Their insights will be of particular interest to researchers and scholars of economic history, political sociology, and the social sciences.

Mr. Goodman did a great job with "Rasputin for Hire". His no nonsense format certainly brings clarity to the profession. I've had the good fortune of meeting Michael Goodman and I'm better for it.

Being an Executive Recruiter, I'm often asked what books I would recommend to "would be job hunters" and I've already mentioned Mike's other book, "The Potato Chip Difference" to many people - all of whom thanked me profusely for the suggestion.

And so it is with "Rasputin for Hire". Many of the people I deal with are high level executives who have a great deal to offer, but are unsure how to get that across, especially when in transition. Mike's book can be a valuable resource for such professionals. Whether you are between jobs or wondering whether consulting might be right for you, I recommend this book as a "must read".

This is a "must read" book for anyone considering the consulting business or for those already in it looking to increase their success. It's an easy reading book, well laid out and gets right to the issues you need to understand about consulting, the pitfalls and how to market yourself. For those who think consulting is an easy or fill-in career between jobs, Mike doesn't pull any punches in describing the difficulties involved in being successful in the consulting business.

I am a technical support consultant for personal computers and I had been billing my time out by the hour. This book pointed out that anyone selling their time rather than their talent is just selling a commodity. I took a look at the type of services I provide and realized that I was under pricing my highly technical expertise and not charging at all for a lot of job related items such as travel and purchasing hardware and software items. I completely revised my price list commensurate with the degree of technical difficulty involved and I am now commanding a premium for my services.

Thank you Rasputin and Mike Goodman!

5 out of 5 stars Thinking about consulting? Read this book.......2004-01-15

I'm one of the consultants interviewed by Goodman when he was writing "Rasputin for Hire". I was pleased to see how my remarks and comments were compiled into the book. While I thought the idea behind the book was a good one when he told me about it, upon reading it, the information and advice became more even more useful. The "26 lessons" are most interesting and very appropriate for virtually all consultants. If you've ever thought about consulting, been a consultant or hired or worked with one, you'd find this book an invaluable read. It's a great book, easy to read, with lots of valuable information. I highly recommend it!

                      Book Description

Getting a business off the ground is only part of the challenge. What every entrepreneur needs is a handbook to guide them through every stage of actually running their business, from finance to marketing, from sales to hiring and managing people.

The Small Business Handbook is THE essential reference for anybody who is starting a business. It provides vital advice and guidance on all the day-to-day aspects of running your enterprise and also helps you plan your growth and exit strategy, so that whatever happens you'll be ready to tackle it, informed and prepared.

The accompanying CD contains a whole range of useful templates and essential documents for use in running your business, and also features audio clips of successful entrepreneurs offering their tips and techniques for making your business really successful. Unlike many small business guides, Steve Parks is an entrepreneur with his own small but fast growing business. It's clear from every page of the handbook that he knows exactly what it's like to be in the reader's position, and he shares everything he wishes he had had during his early years of running his own business. The book is endorsed by the Institute of Entrepreneurs, and by a wide range of entrepreneurs who have been there and done it.

The Complete Guide To Running And Growing Your Business is an excellent resource document for small businesses. If Mr. Sherman had asked me, however, I would have changed the title to "Very important small business stuff that's hard to find anywhere else, especially written in plain English". This is the second book I've owned by this author, and knowing that he is an attorney makes me all the more impressed, because he writes about technical and business fundamentals in a way that the average person can understand. If you want to train salespeople or create a website, this ain't the book for that. But if the answers to hundreds of basic business questions that most of us just don't know is what you are looking for, this book won't let you down. I think it will save you some legal fees, too.
