Book Description
A Guide to America's Sex Laws is the first concise compendium of the nation's sex laws. It summarizes the laws regulating personal sexual activity, revealing gaps, anachronisms, anomalies, inequalities, and irrationalities, and providing an empirical basis for studies of sexual regulation. Judge Richard A. Posner and Katharine B. Silbaugh cover broadly defined areas of regulation, providing background and definitions and placing the laws in their historical and constitutional context. From Alabama to Wyoming, this informative and fascinating reference book will be an essential resource.
"It takes only a few minutes with A Guide to [America's] Sex to realize that the nation's laws governing what two consenting adults can do with one another are an odd jumble."—Eric Fidler, San Diego Commerce
"Especially noteworthy is how laws governing various sexual activities vary from state to state."—Library Journal
"Fascinating and often surprising facts are concisely documented and conveniently organized in A Guide."—Carlin Meyer, New York Law Journal
Customer Reviews:
Complete statutory guide without case law.......1998-01-15
Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and Professor Katharine Silbaugh of Boston University's law school undertaken an impressive task, and they have done half the job very well. "A Guide to America's Sex Laws" is an exhaustive survey of the existing statutes from all fifty states (and the federal government where applicable) for crimes from rape to sodomy to necrophilia. A single volume containing every statute is indeed a valuable resource, but there is a serious problem. Statutes require judicial interpretation, and this book provides very little explanation toward that end. Though each chapter (devoted to a particular offense) includes a brief, survey introduction, the introductions do not provide much help for a reader seeking to know, for example, how Montana courts have interpreted the phrase "deviate sexual relations." As a reference, "A Guide to America's Sex Laws" serves as a good starting point, but the serious researcher will have to use other sources to supplement this text.

Book Description
Are women victims? Or can they hold their own in the workplace? Women's inequality in society is a standard refrain in the popular media and thus in the conventional wisdom. The purveyors of that point of view assume that women are systematically discriminated against on all levels of society, especially in the workplace, and that this discrimination has kept them from reaching equality with men. But the facts show otherwise.
To counter the triple myths of the glass ceiling, the wage gap, and the pink ghetto - the pillars that support arguments in favor of sex-based affirmative action - the authors provide detailed data in graphs and tables to show that in key areas of education and employment women have substantially achieved equality. Women earn over 50 percent of bachelor's and master's degrees; they are moving into previously male-dominated professions; and when education and experience are accounted for, their positions and compensation are similar to men's.
This book, now in its second addition, presents new and updated data to illustrate women's economic progress in America.

Blows the Myth of Gender Wage Disparity--FINALLY!.......2007-08-18
Every year the Dept. of Labor statistic of average wages, male vs female, is touted, falsely, as evidence of wage discrimination. But average pay is a number clouded by the fact that a majority of women still choose jobs with flexibility for attending to family. The average pay statistic makes no attempt at a fair comparison--like job to like job. This book, written by women, does the math and proves that when you compare apples to apples, there is no signifcant gender difference in compensation.
I've been in corporate finance for 35 years, and the real numbers never have supported the nonsesnse reported in the media. No large employer in its right mind would discrimminate in this way. If women were only paid 75% of what men make, there'd be massive lawsuits, and HR manager firings would be in order. Thanks largely to a healthy system of tort laws, during my career corporate management has fought like hell to make sure women are treated fairly. The US is a leader in the industrial world in this effort.
But every year, we'll hear average pay touted as though no progress has been made in the past 40 years. Feminist organizations will rail about the "inequality", and make themselves look foolish..., feeding the popular conception of the math-challenged female.
Doctrinaire rubbish.......2006-03-01
Don't fall for this. The authors are conservative propagandists who engage in the kind of fake scholarship that the American Enterprise Institute and its ilk specializes in. Remember when you were first learning to write a term paper and the teacher said "don't make the facts fit your argument; your argument has to rest on the facts"? Well the authors were busy running for class president and missed that little lesson. In their world, there is no reason to worry about discrimination laws, or social security, or poverty relief because no-one is ever destitute, excluded or unable to get decent work. Anyone with a passing acquaintance with reality can recognise this for the class warfare that it really is.
Women's Success Story.......2002-05-06
Anyone who appreciated Who Stole Feminism?, where Christina Hoff Sommers corrects what passes for feminist statistics will find plenty to love in these 123 pages. Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba explain with tons of data why the "wage gap" and "glass ceiling" are myths based on bad statistics and a less than thorough investigation of the facts. The authors spell out the truth, that we should be celebrating women's progress. Feminists should be bragging that women earn the majority of bachelor's and master's degrees and that women-owned businesses are growing faster than businesses overall instead of inventing discrimination where it clearly doesn't exist, as the stats in this book prove. This book should be required reading in women's studies classes, but unfortunately the half-truths often spread in such classes are the reason this book needed to be written in the first place.
A valuable contribution of facts on a much debated subject........1999-04-29
Much of what we know about the economic status of women is summarized in this excellent monograph by Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba. It covers not only the so-called gender gap between men's and women's incomes, but also educational attainment, occupational choice and political influence. Understanding of the subject is enhanced by colorful charts. - Herbert Stein

Book Description
In 1989 strange things began to happen in these United States. Musicians and music store owners were charged with crimes for singing songs or selling tapes and records. The U.S. Congress passed a resolution condemning a major museum for permitting a display that "encourages disrespect for the flag." The federal arts funding agency was accused of blasphemy for assisting artists whose work dealt with religious themes. And so "censorship" became a key word in political debate. In Sex, Sin, and Blasphemy, the founding director of the ACLU Arts Censorship Project discusses the most hotly contested censorship issues.
Customer Reviews:
I'm really the first to review this???.......2004-12-12
On moral grounds it would be simply impossible to find fault with Sex, Sin, and Blasphemy, a brief but broad overview by Marjorie Heins of the attempts by self-appointed morality police to control what Americans say, see, hear, and think. As a reader of typically scholarly history books, Heins comes off as a bit raw around the edges, and certainly partisan in her approach. Good. The history of this abominable mindset of censorship is brought out to us as a warning and a guide to the here and now. Though first published in 1993 and updated slightly in 1998, it couldn't be timelier than right now. Seriously, I'm not just making a platitude. With the inmates of the asylum running the FCC and no end of oppressive socially conservative government in sight, we need a clear headed and perhaps slightly shrill warning about the nonsense that comes from the holier-than-thou thought police.
Wow, now that I've finished the harshest opening paragraph of any review I've done to date, let's see what's in the book. Overall, as expected, the topics all revolve around the first amendment free speech rights supposedly enjoyed by all Americans (actually, by pretty much anyone in the country, citizen or not). From the start Heins points out that the first is often treated as a second class amendment, and has been routinely abused or ignored by the courts and legislatures, as well as by lesser powered government agencies in the form of city and town governments and local police forces. Topically, Heins goes over threats against and outright bans of free expression in societal culture such as movies, music, or art. Besides outright bans, such as the repulsive Hayes code for motion pictures (the code that kept movie married couples sleeping is widely separated beds, and just where do babies come from in such a universe anyway?), we also get a recap of the music warning label sticker controversy of the eighties. Heins also takes a look at a lesser-publicized form of abuse in the form of "friendly" warnings to store owners by local police forces and city agencies. If you can't ban something, just scare businesses away from it. Cheap, effective, and completely unaccountable. Even blasphemy is covered (didn't that go out with the inquisition?). And of course, Heins also looks at pornography (real pornography, not just what prudes find discomforting), why efforts to ban it are silly, and how the few allowed forms of censorship (against kiddie porn with actual kids) is frequently twisted into a legal monstrosity. Mostly in the form of brief case studies, Heins never misses a chance to editorialize. That is, after all, what the book is for. Though short and a quick read, I found it a highly satisfactory one even as it made me sick to be reminded that such knuckle draggers have actual power in our society. And yes, Heins produces a brief list of ideas on how to fight back.
I doubt this will be the final word on censorship. As I write this in December of 2004, and looking back at my opening lines, it is clear that the problem is not currently getting better. Though Heins writes frequently on this topic, perhaps it's time for an update. In one sense the book feels very old in that I recall no mention being made of the Internet. But other than this lack of up-to-the-minute coverage, you'll find here a concise and morally clear recap of the wars between thought and senselessness.

Customer Reviews:
Good analysis framework.......2007-05-04
Indian firms like Infosys and Wipro have already reshaped the IT Services industry. Now China is focusing on building up its software industry. What are the implications of this for the global software industry? This is a question that dogged many observers. Until now I haven't seen a thoughtful analysis about this. Yes, there have been a number of opinions expressed based on anecdotal data and armchair speculation. But there is nothing like the quality of analysis this book offers.
It first looks at China and India separately using PESTEL analysis. It then compares the two of them together using a SWOT perspective. This sets the stage for a good discussion about their influence in the global software industry. Since China and India aren't acting independently the authors do a fairly perceptive examination of the interrelationships between the strategies of the two countries. They also look at likely competitive strategy and positioning that China and India are likely to follow in the years to come.
There are some interesting conclusions. India and China will compete only at the edges; both will gain market share in the global software industry. Also, India IT Services domination will not be seriously threatened by China. This is because the Indian IT Services firms have attained critical mass and scale in contrast to the Chinese firms. The Chinese industry is remains fragmented and is unlikely to see significant consolidation in the near future. And unless consolidation happens, as fast follower strategy is unlikely to work. The area that Chinese firms might shine is not IT Services but products. They have the advantage of a larger local market and better government support over the Indian firms.
I think the issue of India and China will have to be revisited a few years from now. The strength of this book is that it provides an analysis framework that can be reused.
The pricing at $110 is a bit bizarre. This price point effectively ensures a small readership which is quite a shame considering that topic is so relevant to a large part of the software industry.

Book Description
This book presents analysis of endemic deprivation in India and the role of public action in addressing the problem. The analysis is based on a broad view of economic development, focusing on human well-being and 'social opportunity' rather than the standard indicators of economic growth. India's success in reducing deprivation since Independence has been limited. Recent diagnoses of this failure of policy have concentrated on the counterproductive role of government regulation, and on the need for economic incentives to accelerate the economy. Professors Dreze and Sen argue that an assessment of India's failure to eliminate basic deprivations has to go beyond this limited focus, and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate public involvement in the provision of basic education, health care, social security, and related fields. Even the fostering of fast and participatory economic growth requires some basic social change, which is not addressed by liberalization and economic incentives. The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. Following on from this, the book considers the scope for public action to address these earlier biases and achieve a transformation of policy priorities. ` ... a fine account of India's achievements and failures ... written throughout in a fine style ... it will be a starting-point of subsequent discussions on social life in India.' In so doing, it will be able to improve its international competitiveness and join the ranks of countries that are making a successful transition to the knowledge economy.

India and the Knowledge Economy assesses India's progress in becoming a knowledge economy and suggests actions to strengthen the economic and institutional regime, develop educated and skilled workers, create an efficient innovation system, and build a dynamic information infrastructure. It highlights that to get the greatest benefits from the knowledge revolution, India will need to press on with the economic reform agenda that it put into motion a decade ago and continue to implement the various policy and institutional changes needed to accelerate growth. In so doing, it will be able to improve its international competitiveness and join the ranks of countries that are making a successful transition to the knowledge economy. "
Customer Reviews:
Congratulations!.......2006-02-25
Amazon service was fantastic, unfortunatelly here in India the postal service is terrible, they open all the letters and packages. When I received it, it was opened.
Anyway, the book is good but not excellent as I was expecting.
Thank you for the attention.

These guys are creative and business geniuses.......2005-11-24
This is a seriously powerful volume. Published by the World Bank Institute, it lays out a strategy for leveraging strengths and opportunities within India's emerging knowledge economy.
This book is so well written and clearly organized that it could be a strategy document for any country, from China to Venezuela. Indeed, what I see in this book is the possibility of India becoming a knowledge "hub" nation, where its call centers make the leap up to becoming intelligence analysis centers, with Indians skilled in all languages, having access to all information all the time, and able to create distilled synethic knowledge--answers on demand--across all topics for all levels of users.
The six chapters, 12 appendices, and numerous figures and tables reflect the very highest quality of thinking, clarity, and purpose. This is an extraordinary reference, and I will read it again on my way to India in December, where we will be discussing the creation of a global Information Merchant Bank that builds on and exceeds what Google has been able to accomplish, by adding the human element--human translators, human finders, human analysts, human reporters.

Book Description
The political and economic opening up of India, China, Turkey and the eastern European states have led to a change in competition on the world's markets. These countries are already considered attractive procurement markets, especially by European companies.
However, global sourcing can mean hidden costs for those who are unaware of the international markets and their modes of operation.
In this book, Gerd Kerkhoff proves that companies can still be successful in their global sourcing - despite the risks involved. He shows which goods and services are suited to global sourcing and introduces the key procurement markets and their strengths. Concrete examples illustrate how international buying can be successfully planned.

Book Description
"Affirmative action" in the USA and "reservation policies" in India are arguably the two most important national instances of positive discrimination in favor of historically disadvantaged racial/ethnic minority groups.
This impressive book utilizes a cost-benefit framework to develop a general model for the comparative analysis positive discrimination policies and reviews systematically the available empirical evidence on the consequences of those policies in admissions to higher education institutions in both the USA and India.
As an exercise in the application of cost-benefit analysis, this book is an important contribution. It is as a scholarly contribution to one of the most topical and important issues facing the world today, however, that this book really makes its mark--a truly indispensible read for students and academics involved in labor and discrimination as well as those with a general interest in affirmative action.
