Book Description
We often think of great battles as having been won by superior strategy, bravery, or weaponry. Often, however, the greatest battles are decided by a much more mundane factor: logistics.
Delivering the Goods looks at business logistics through the history of successful military logistical operations undertaken by leaders from Alexander the Great to General Norman Schwarzkopf, and offers practical guidance on applying proven logistical principles to your business.
Customer Reviews:
In Praise of SCM/Logistics.......2006-12-13
Often forgotten and seldom fully understood the Supply Chain Executive's role is finally acknowledged in a splendid read. The mirror of successful military executions to those accomplished daily in the modern business environment is achieved succinctly with the authors' fresh approach. This instant classic is a "must read" for all, whether in the noble endeavor of Supply Chain Management and Execution, or simply engaged in competitive business.
Very over rated.......2003-12-31
The first part of the book provides a good history of Logistics but over rates the purported military genius of Desert Storm - the truth was that they shipped too much stuff and things that were not needed at a great expense and ended up leaving it to rot...not much expertise needed to waste the taxpayer's money.
The rest of the book is a rehash of well known SCM principles and is a terrible way to try to get these across. It is page after page of text, with no diagrams of the "system" that the author is trying to get across, but I suspect that the system may not really make sense if constructed and that is why it is not...baffle the readers with text.
If you do not know anything about SCM, this is a good intro, but I was greatly disappointed in this book, especially in light of the glowing reviews that this received.
Excellent read!.......2003-08-18
Damon Schechter's DELIVERING THE GOODS is an extremely informative and entertaining telling of the story of logistics. Through the course of the book, he elucidates the basic concepts of logistics in an informal yet highly effective manner. He delves into the human aspect quite a bit; we are privy to the trials and tribulations of those ingenious men who first pioneered the ideas behind supply chain and logistics management.
The primary purpose of DELIVERING THE GOODS is as a terrific primer about logistics and its history that will pique the interest of any person who has had little formal background in the art of logistics management. The main strength of DELIVERING THE GOODS lies in its astounding clarity which does not come at the expense of comprehensiveness. Schechter assumes no prior experience with supply chain concepts or logistics management. It is this accessibility which makes this the first book on logistics you should buy.
In summary, I highly recommend this to anyone who has at least a passing interest in supply chains or logistics. For those with experience in logistics management, the history of logistics presented in DELIVERING THE GOODS will still be very interesting. However, do not expect all of the ideas to be new.
Great Background and Introduction to Logistics and SCM.......2003-08-11
This is one of the better books addressing the theory and practice of logistics and supply chain management. If you're a professional logistician, this is a good book. If you're not a professional logistician wanting to learn more about logistics efficiency and the massive impact it can have on cost and service, this is a great book!!
I would strongly recommend this book to general managers of warehousing and manufacturing operations, senior officers hoping to learn more about logistics strategy and tactics, and even front line managers who can utilize this work to connect the logistics function silo with the entire enterprise.
The battleground of the next decade.......2003-08-09
This could arguably be called modern supplementary reading to Sun Tsu's Art of War. It provides an interesting overview of logistics and supply chain management from the ancient world to modern times.
The text is separated into two sections. The first half deals with the origins of logistics as a military art from Alexander the Great to the Gulf War and introduces the reader to the logisticians behind the generals. The second half deals with Schechter's logistical approach: The Tri-Level View, supplemented by case studies at the text's conclusion.
As stated in the Epilogue, logistics is neither boring, nor is it donkey work, but the strategic differentiator between companies which will succeed or fail. After all, You can't promise what you can't deliver.

Book Description
With the persistent instability of international financial markets, emerging economies are exploring new ways to reduce exposure to capital flow volatility. Some analysts argue that financially open economies are best served by more flexible regimes, while others argue in favor of extreme exchange rate regimes that have a strong commitment to a fixed parity or dispense with an independent currency. The successful launch of the euro has made more realistic the prospect of replacing a national currency with a strong foreign one. Recent examples include the adoption of the US dollar by Ecuador and El Salvador.
The introduction of a foreign currency as sole legal tender, termed full (de jure) dollarization, has been the center of much political and academic debate. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The topics discussed include the role of balance sheet effects, the linkage between currency risk and country risk, the impact of dollarization on trade, financial integration and credibility, the implications of dollarization for the lender of last resort, and the institutional and political economy aspects of dollarization.
Customer Reviews:
good and unbiased intro to a much politicized topic.......2003-01-14
As opposed to most of the literature on the topic (de jure/formal/full dollarization Salvadorean style; NOT de facto financial dollarization that characterizes many developing countries), this volume succeeds in presenting a balanced compendium of papers that summarizes the main issues, informing the reader without trying to sell a particular option. The Primer is particularly helpful for dollarization curious policy makers and economist without an emerging market orientation. While briefing on the contents of the different chapters of the volume, it tackles a number of diverse and related topics, ranging from old-style optimum currency area criteria to modern-style developing-coutries-cannot-manage-their-own-currency type of arguments (the so called monetary credibility argument), to non-economical political considerations, always avoiding easy simplifications of generalizations. For that reason, it may read as a little derivative sometimes, but a second reading and a long reference list provides a fairly comprehensive unbiased introduction that is difficult to find elsewhere. For those whose want more, the chapters elaborate on particular themes discussed in the introductory primer. The language is as diverse as the authors of the papers, going from an analytical presentation of the credibility-flexibility tradeoff by Chang and Velasco to a down-to-earth step by step guide for a prospective dollarizer by Gruber and co-authors, to a descriptive account of the political aspects by Frieden. All in all, a nice introduction for the lay and an up to date reference book for the initiated. (True, papers can be downloaded, some even in the final version, from the Internet. But this happens to be the rule rather than the exception in these days. At least, MIT Press has done an unexpectedly creative job with the cover.)

Table of content:
1. Dollarization: A premier
2. Dollarization: Analytical issues
3. Using balance sheet data to identify sovereign default and devaluation risk
4. Dollarization and the lender of last resort
5. Measuring costs and benefits of dollarization: An application of Central Americana and Caribbean countries
6. Dollarization: The link between devaluation and default risk
7. Implementation guidelines for dollarization and monetary unions
8. The political economy of dollarization: Domestic and international factors
Most of these old papers (from the academic time line) can be downloaded from Internet for free by searching from google.com, for example. These days Economics books by MIT Press tend to collect old papers and keep the table of content secret. What a good strategy.

Book Description
This book takes a global approach, with an emphasis on North and Latin America respectfully, by discussing one of today's most controversial topics in business; Dollarization. With the collapse of the former Soviet Union, and the formation of the Euro in Europe, many countries and debating whether or not a common currency is in their best interest. This intriguing volume brings together the leading participants in the current dollarization debates. Many advocate the notion of a common currency, while others feel that in doing so will create financial costs for all that take part, with the severity varying from country to country.

From the supplier: Both developed and emerging market economies have in common many of the warning signs of imminent capital market crises, but developed nations have escaped relatively unscathed from the currency crises of the 1990s decade, which on the other hand have considerably buffeted emerging countries. The issue raised by the increasing severity and frequency of these financial shocks is what kind of policies and exchange rate arrangements might render emerging economies less vulnerable to the sharp capital flow reversals which their industrialized counterparts do not routinely experience during crises. Dollarization rather than flexible exchange rates might provide emerging nations a viable and more market-friendly approach to capital controls by minimizing the issues originating from currency and maturity mismatches.

Changed my life.......1997-04-22
After years of fighting the consulting battle alone, this book came along and I realized that all of my experiences were held in common by that group known as "Consultants." I realized that even my "failures" were tremendous learning experiences that made me a better consultant. What a relief to know I'm not alone and part of a grand tradition.
What I learned: Always, always look for the customers pain. Sell to that and you create real value, satisfaction and repeat business.

Book Description
The competence-based perspective on strategy and management emerged in the 1990s as a new approach to developing strategy and management theory and practice. In the past decade, the focus on organizational competences - and the resources, capabilities, and processes that create competences - has provided a highly productive "broad church" for theory development, research, and practice in both strategic and general management.
Authored by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working within the competence perspective, the papers in this volume contribute to developing a better theoretical and practical understanding of the role of
resources, stakeholders, and organizational renewal in an organization's competences. The papers present both theoretical developments and empirical research based on a variety of case studies and other research in diverse industrial and geographical contexts.
The papers in this volume are grouped under the three themes stated in the title of the volume. Part I includes papers that address a range of conceptual and practical questions about the role of both
firm-specific and firm-addressable resources in an organization's competence building and leveraging, as well as issues in effectively managing a dynamic resource base. The papers in Part II investigate
the management of stakeholders who provide the critical resources and capabilities a competent organization requires. Part III includes papers that focus
on processes of organizational renewal, with an emphasis on the roles of key resources and stakeholders in contributing to renewal.

Book Description
Drawing upon evolutionary economics and resource-based approaches, the author utilizes US patent data from 1930-1990 to examine the persistence of corporate technological competencies and their gradual erosion through diversifying incremental change. The book explores the changing nature of this diversification with respect to firm size, technological relatedness and technological complexity in 32 firms distributed across four broadly defined industrial sectors.
The findings suggest that industry and corporate technological profiles remain strong but are becoming blurred by the pervasiveness of general-purpose technologies. Although historically diversification is associated with an increase in firm size, the author argues that in recent times it results from technological relatedness and complexity.
This book will appeal to industrial and business economists, historians of business and technology, and students and scholars of technology management.
