Book Description
Why should each country have its own exclusive currency? Eric Helleiner offers a fascinating and unique perspective on this question in his accessible history of the origins of national money.
Our contemporary understandings of national currency are, Helleiner shows, surprisingly recent. Based on standardized technologies of production and extraction, territorially exclusive national currencies emerged for the first time only during the nineteenth century. This major change involved a narrow definition of legal tender and the exclusion of tokens of value issued outside the national territory. "Territorial currencies" rapidly became bound up with the rise of national markets, and money reflected basic questions of national identity and self-presentation: In what way should money be managed to serve national goals? Whose pictures should go on the banknotes?
Helleiner draws out the potent implications of this largely unknown history for today's context. Territorial currencies face challenges from many monetary innovations-the creation of the euro, dollarization, the spread of local currencies, and the prospect of privately issued electronic currencies. While these challenges are dramatic, the author argues that their significance should not be overstated. Even in their short historical life, territorial currencies have never been as dominant as conventional wisdom suggests. The future of this kind of currency, Helleiner contends, depends on political struggles across the globe, struggles that echo those at the birth of national money.

Book Description
In Monetary Policy, leading monetary economists discuss applied aspects of monetary policy and offer practical new research on the timing, magnitude, and channels of central banking actions.
Some of the papers in this volume evaluate a variety of policy rules based on monetary aggregates, nominal income, commodity prices, and other economic variables. Others analyze price behavior and inflation, particularly the short-run behavior of prices. Still others examine the monetary transmission mechanism—the channel through which the central bank's actions affect spending on goods and services—with a special focus on the reduction in bank lending that must accompany a reduction in reserves.
This new research will be of special interest to central bankers and academic economists.

Insight into the tricky world of Monetary Policy.......2000-04-01
This book consists of collected papers from leading economic intellectuals and their discussions on a variety of economic issues. One of the contrbutors is N. Gregory Mankiw, a Harvard professor, whose lucid style makes him eminently readable. But be warned this book is not for novices! A solid understanding of many microeconomic and macroeconomic issues is a necesary prerequisite to reading this book.

Book Description
In
Monetary Theory: National and International, Alvaro Cencini argues that a new approach to the analysis of bank money is needed which is capable of providing modern analytical instruments based on the intrinsic nature of bank money. Conventionally, monetary problems are examined with reference to a monetary framework which has little to do with the real world of banking. The purpose of this book is to provide an alternative analysis to monetary economics based on the very distinctive properties of bank money. Monetary problems are investigated from a structural point of view. Of special interest is the distinction made between money and income which is rooted in the everyday practices of central and secondary banks. The book also examines exchange rate instability and financial crisis and finally, sets forward an alternative proposal for European Monetary Union.
Book Description
This volume provides a critical evaluation of Anna J. Schwartz's work and probes various facets of the immense contribution of her scholarship—How well has it stood the test of time? What critiques have been leveled against it? How has monetary research developed over the years, and how has her influence been manifested? Bordo has collected five conference papers presented by leading monetary scholars, discussants' comments, and closing remarks by Milton Friedman and Karl Brunner. Each of these insightful surveys extends Schwartz's work and makes its own contribution to the fields of monetary history, theory, and policy. The volume also contains a foreword by Martin Feldstein and a selected bibliography of publications by Anna Schwartz.

Book Description
The 1990s witnessed several acute currency crises among developing nations that invariably spread to other nearby at-risk countries. These episodes—in Mexico, Thailand, South Korea, Russia, and Brazil—were all exacerbated by speculative foreign investments and high-volume movements of capital in and out of those countries. Insufficient domestic controls and a sluggish international response further undermined these economies, as well as the credibility of external oversight agencies like the International Monetary Fund. This timely volume examines the correlation between volatile capital mobility, currency instability, and the threat of regional contagion, focusing particular attention on the emergent economies of Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Together these studies offer a new understanding of the empirical relationship between capital flows, international trade, and economic performance, and also afford key insights into realms of major policy concern.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 100th Anniversary Edition (Books of Wonder)
ASIN: 0275974189 |
Book Description
The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel as an allegory of the Gilded Age political economy and a comment on the gold standard. The heart of the book is an annotated version of The Wizard of Oz that highlights the possible political and monetary symbolism in the book by relating characters, settings, and incidents in it to the historical events and figures of the 1890s, the decade in which Baum wrote his story. Dighe simultaneously values the leading political interpretations of Oz as useful and creative teaching tools, and consolidates them in a sympathetic fashion; yet he rejects the commonly held, and by now well-debunked, view that those interpretations reflect Baum's likely motivations in writing the book. The result is a unique way for readers to acquaint themselves with a classic of children's literature that is a bit different and darker than the better-known film version. Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. Dighe also includes a primer on gold, silver, and the American monetary system, as well as a brief history of the Populist movement.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Classroom Source.......2006-08-13
Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.
I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

Book Description
This account of monetary regimes since 1900 shows how the role of policy has changed, and how this has related to experience of inflation and the real economy, as well as to changes in political philosophies. The narrative concentrates on developments in America, Europe and Japan from the era of the classical gold standard, via the era of policy intervention and reduced faith in the market to the present "neo-liberal" regimes. It is argued that no school of macroeconomics is right for all time; different theoretical models may be appropriate.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-10-09
An excellent book if you know HTML and have had some experience with databases and web programming. I am a static web programmer needing to learn dynamic creation of websites. This is all I need! Great Book!
Especially good at data-related subjects.......2007-09-24
An excellent resource for beginners. If you are a complete beginner to ASP.NET, and also want to brush up on Visual Basic, start with Hatfield's ASP.NET 2.0 for Dummies. After that, come to this book by Mitchell.
His writing style is particularly good for people who like to work through concepts step by step, with their right hand on their keyboard and their left on the book. He is careful with his examples, doesn't move too quickly, doesn't make many assumptions. I very rarely get lost when working through one of Mitchell's chapters. Definately can't say that about many other resources.
This is not as good a starting point for complete beginners than is Hatfield's Dummies book. But if you are getting more comfortable with your skills, this is the next place to go. Lastly: this book is ESPECIALLY helpful with data-related subjects. Working with the DataSource control, the GridView control. A review of basic SQL behavior (all that most of us will ever need). This book walks you gently right through these areas.
This was one of the early ASP.NET 2.0 books to be published, and I was worried about it being rushed, about it relying on the CTP version instead of the release version (a constant problem with early-release tech books). I needn't have worried.
Meets Expectation.......2007-09-15
I read and did all of the exercises of this book from beginning to end. I did not skip a single page. I know that the cons comment is longer, but I think you would appreciate it better.
Pros: It is a good book for beginners. It provided easy steps-by-step examples. This book did meet my expectations but did nothing to "WOW" me to give it a good score. Over all, this is a good book and I recommended it with conditions mentioned below.
Cons: There are some mistakes in the book that could lead you in the wrong direction. I wonder why the publisher DID NOT provide an errata for this book. But, with a little programming knowledge you can fix the errors and move on. The last example when you create the photo website has major problems. The author converted the photo website from another project causing major errors. It has mistakes that are so apparent I am suprise that the proof-readers did not catch them. If you have no programming background, you will be at a lost with the database section of the photo website because they talked about tables that were not even create. Such as a Products table for a photo website that contains no products. Actually, there should be no Products table AT ALL !!! I know that the previous sentences were confusing, but that is the way the book was written.
I hope this helps you choose a book for your own preference.
All-In-One Microsoft Web-Development Basics, Nicely Done.......2007-08-12
ASP.NET is the heart of Microsoft's web-development platform. ASP.NET includes a large set of web-page controls and database access controls that are executed by a server-side engine. Just drag and drop these controls on a web page from the Visual Studio IDE (or its free, stripped-down version, Visual Web Developer), add a small amount of code (VB, C#, or other) to handle a few events, and you have a web application that handles almost any task, including heavy duty database access. Publish the ASP.Net pages on any web server with .NET support. When a user with any browser requests an ASP.NET page, the web server passes the request to the ASP.NET engine, which fills data requests and performs other processing chores, and then returns information to the user via the web server as standard HTML. ASP.NET is one of the top technologies used for major web sites. Any site showing pages with a ".aspx" extension is an ASP.NET site. As decribed below, it is hard to learn much at all about ASP.NET without exposure to a full set of Microsoft web development technologies.
If you want to quickly learn the basics of the complete suite of Microsoft tools (briefly described above) for programming web applications, this book by an experienced author and expert ASP.NET developer will serve you well. The included CD has all the Microsoft tools that you need - (1) Visual Web Developer Express, an integratged development environment for page design, code editing, testing, and project administration with most the of the important features of the professional Visual Studio environment, (2) an integrated web server that mimics Microsoft's IIS (a production-grade server) but will run even on XP Home Edition while IIS will not, (3) Visual Basic 2005 Express version, which is today the most common language for writing Microsoft code, (4) SQL Server 2005 Express Version, a starter version containing the basic funcitonality of the full SQL Sever 2005, which is one of the top three relational databases used for major websites.
So just add a computer with any version of XP or Windows 2000 or 2003. You will not need another reference to learn the basics of ASP.NET, VB, or SQL Server since this book is written for those with no prior experience with these Microsoft products. I would say that if you have never written any code, then perhaps a Teach Yourself VB book or other first programming book would be a better starting point.
I have many years of system administration and programming experience and used the book as a refresher before updating some simple but important applications that I wrote five years ago using older versions of the Microsoft web development servers and tools. I completed the first application update without other references except for a brief look at security issues in a SQL Server book.
For years I have made entry-level software engineers in my small technology company use an earlier version (by a different author) of Teach Yourself ASP.NET. This book is even better, although I would have preferred a book that taught the basics of publishing a site with IIS as well. As pointed out earlier, the author chose to use the web sever built in to Visual Web Developer since Microsoft no longer supports IIS on its entry-level OS version.
There were only a few typos. The twenty-four hours grew to about thirty-five as I slavishly completed all of the examples in the text.
Good problems for person new to ASP,NET 2.0.......2007-06-13
I have tried many asp.net 2.0 books and this is the first one that "sticked" with my beginner skills. There are many examples and exercises with great explanations of why things work the way they work. I liked the introductions and the summaries at the end of each chapter. The writing is clear and the examples are fun.
I am getting quite confident with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition because of all the example exercises in the book. I can usually debug my errors and the author's errors, which is a testament to Scott Mitchell's explanations.
This book uses Visual Basic, not C#. I am new to both and can't decide where to invest my learning time. I have not yet found a book to use with both Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and asp.net programming classes.
I have found just a few errors in the book, which is why I did not give it 5 stars. I am currently going through the last example exercise, a photo album, which ties together all the things in previous chapters in a wonderful way. There are a few little errors that are sometimes frustrating to try to figure out (I am stuck on one right now; my code is exactly the same as the the code listing in the book, but I am getting an error). I would like to see a web site with the actual code that works to compare exactly.
I could never get through this book in 24 hours (the gimmick of the title), but it is the best of the many books, DVDs and web videos I have tried.

Customer Reviews:
Too much repetition, too little meat.......2006-02-07
In short, the material covered in this book could have been thoroughly explained in 8 hours or less -- not 24. The author continuously repeats himself (e.g. tells you how to create a new file repeatedly). So, the real message becomes hidden within the repetitious rambling. Entire chapters are spent on covering just one or two insignificant topics. As other reviewers posted, the author states "that is out of scope for this book" way too often. The writing style is a bit monotonous -- needs a bit more enthusiasm. Examples are VERY poor in the few times they are provided. The author makes it seem as if Web Matrix is the industry-standard tool to use when coding ASP.NET, when in reality, it isn't. As another reviewer stated it, you will definitely know how to click and drag objects onto the page -- but not really code. Overall, I think this book could have been much, much slimmer and be labeled "Teach Yourself ASP.NET with Web Matrix in 10 Minutes". It has the content of the "10 minute" series. I give it 2 stars because although it doesn't teach much, it does teach some. I will buy other SAMS "Teach Yourself" books because I think they are good in general, but I won't buy anything else from this author.
Useful, But Where's The Rest...?.......2006-01-02
As you can see from my rating, I'm not offset by this book. I would recommend it, but only to circumstantial needs. This book is written with great style, and an interesting mannerism. I guess that's what you get with an author that happens to be younger than the majority of the projected audience. The information contained is helpful, but seems like the author directs you more towards his free website, rather than show you an example in the book you've just purchased. It's almost a slap in the face if you think about it. I felt like I've paid for something he's giving away to everyone else.
Personally, I've been a web, and application programmer for about ten years. I have learned many languages, but felt a little uneasy about learning ASP.NET. Not only did I not want to have to run an SQL server, I didn't want to deal with the aspects of online checkout. I recently accepted a job where it was a prerequisite to have ASP.NET background, so I bought this 24-Hour guide to jumpstart myself into the world of Active Server Pages.
This book really did show me that there was nothing to worry about. Although reading this book is almost like a rollercoaster ride. He jumps around so much, you don't know wether you're going up or down. One second he's talking about VBscript, then about aesthetic properties, then he's talking about how everything you need to know is beyond the scope of this book, and you should really buy his other ones. Then goes on to explain how to install the SQL server (In Hour 13. More than halfway through the book, and you can now run the software needed to make your pages work). After I setup my SQL server and started making sucessful, and almost-useful database retreival pages, I realized that the book ended there. It started harping on un-needed aesthetic properties of dropdown menus, and listboxes (I guess that's what you get with such a young author). The DataGrid properties were very helpful, and useful to use when "dolling up" your website, but if you've got an IQ of over 40, you could probably figure out that the same properties apply in the same way to all of the web controls, and the readers might know how to use a Repeater control.
The most important web control in the arsenal of an ASP.NET programmer is the Repeater control. This book has one statement regarding the Repeater control, claiming it to be (and I quote), "Beyond the scope of this book." I think there are more mentions to the phrase, "Beyond the scope of this book," than explanations of imperative web controls.
I would recommend that you check out the free website located at http://4guysfromrolla.com before buying the book. There are more examples at the site than in the book, as well as full programming example codes (which by the way are not explained in the book).
The programmer that plans on using a text-based editor to create ASP.NET pages should not buy this book. Anyone with very little programming comprehension, or any beginner that knows nothing about pre-existing web languages may enjoy this book. For a 14 year-old beginner of HTML, this would be a very fun book, I'm sure.
Misleading and mistakes everywhere.......2005-09-05
I would not recommend this book to anyone, as it ignores the fact that there are other tools on the market, and keep telling people that you have to input HTML codes manually. There are also so many mistakes in the book that make the reading difficult. Even if I have been following his instructions on the exercices closely, some times the resulting web pages won't run at all.
Great Book For Beginners.......2005-07-20
The book is great and very simple even simpler than the Dummies book, It helps in building a solid knowledge in the .Net framework. Their use of WebMatrix was a good idea because it's very easy to be used and it's FREE. Really the book was great I liked it and I encourage you to buy it today. I have some comments on the book but it's nothing really.
24 Hours is too fast!.......2004-12-05
I got this book becuase I just want to know how to simply connect to a database in ASP.NET. This book failed for that purpose. Rather than explaining things step by step, this book does a "quickie" job trying to explain complicated procedures in a few short paragraphs. The topics are so condensed, it is almost like reading a college student's notes for class. It does not give enough detail or examples to get you started writing high powered applications in ASP.NET.

Book Description
There are three objectives of the Act Y2K Small Business Workbook. The first objective is to provide information to help you understand the Year 2000 problem. This includes- what it is, how it happened, and some of the potential consequences. The second objective of this workbook is to help you develop an Act Y2K team. This includes what qualities to consider when selecting a leader, how to structure your team and the accountabilities for each level. The third objective is to guide you through an inventory assessment to identify the "critical systems" to be repaired or replaced.
We help your organization meet these objectives by using a systematic, step by step approach that includes: awareness, leadership, communication, assessment, risk analysis, testing, decision analysis, repair or replace and contingency planning.
The tools included in this workbook are: sample letters to banks, suppliers, customers and employees. Also contained are a critical systems list, Internet addresses for compliance testing, decision making model, staffing tips, recruiting outline, and a home survival guide for you and your employees. The home survival guide includes: disaster supply kit information, water treatment information, food shelf life information; telephone numbers for SSN, PEBES statements, and vital record offices for all 50 states.

Good source for small businesses!.......1999-06-20
We found this workbook to be very helpful in designing our readiness plan for Y2K. The authors used a methodical approach for understanding the problem. The Y2K glossary was very helpful in communicating our goals to external consultants.
decent.......1999-05-04
I would rate this book 2nd only to: "How To Financially Protect Your Business From Y2K Business Interruption-The Essential Workbook" by Ken Lagasse.
On Our Way to Readiness!!.......1999-04-30
Our organization used the Act Y2K Small Business Workbook to develop a plan to cope with Y2K. First, the workbook helped us develop an internal Y2K team. Second, the workbook help us develop a comunication strategy with our critical groups. Third, the inventory list opened our eyes to the possible systems that could be disrupted. Fourth, the workbook gave us valuable repair and replace strategies. Next, the authors included implementation and contingency information to further reduce risks. We thought these guys did a decent job and we liked the process! We nominate this to be The National Y2K Small Business Workbook.
Good guide for small business!.......1999-04-21
The Act Y2K Small Business Workbook helped our organization implement a plan of action for Y2K. The authors used a systematic plan that guided us through critical steps to achieve compliance. We have used the sample letters to contact our vendors to let them know we are taking the year 2000 computer problem very seriously. We hope other small businesses are doing the same!
don't waste your companies money.......1999-04-13
I should have saved the hefty book price and spent a little time on some of the internet sites for small business Y2K preparation. It appears that's how much time these authors devoted to preparing this "book."

Convinces me why and how my firms finances could be hit!.......1999-04-16
This is quite a packed collection of different aspects of Year 2000, most of which have some form of financial delimma. I like the way this is such a hands-on book though I'll be leaving the different analysis to my accountant. For myself, some of the actions to take that are so detailed throughout the book are right on if their prediction of business interruption is even close. No more new projects until the smoke clears and I like how the tax section makes sense.
Lagasse seems to have an instinct for what small business goes through, especially with banks and the financial types that try to run our affairs, though I find it hard to believe all that legal complexity is going to be any fun.
In short, this book has saved me lots of time and I finally can relate to how Year 2000 could affect my business because of business interruption. I've got plenty of decisions to make and maybe I'm going to try to build in some of the suggestions into our day to day routines. I'm not worrying so much as thinking what minimum to do to keep Y2K from causing too much financial grief. The way Lagasse trys to keep you one step ahead of the 'Y2K elephants' is worth it. But someone there has quite the strong attitudes and sense of humour, unabashed that they are. Definitey ground level if not ground zero for many small businesses.

Way over priced.......1999-07-07
The text contained some check lists that are useful but for the most part the book was a real ripe off!
Excellent hands-on guide for small business Y2K readiness.......1998-11-12
The Y2K Workbook for Small Business is an easy to understand, step by step guide for preparing small businesses for Y2K compliance. It creates an awareness of the issues and offers a straight forward plan to follow. It is important for small businesses to understand that Y2K does not just affect "computers",but rather it can impact the entire bottom line. Y2K preparedness requires an overall business plan and the workbook will be an Indispensable tool for owners and employees. It also contains a disc with model letters to send to vendors, suppliers and customers. Highly recommended.
Excellent, step by step guide for small businesses.......1998-11-07
This is an excellent, step by step workbook for small businesses. It is written from the small business person's perspective and is easy to understand--jargon free. It also has several letter templates for writing customers and vendors. This is an excellent tool for small businesses that need to understand the implications of Y2K for their businesses. One of the key points this workbook undescores, is that being prepared for Y2K doesn't just require getting your computer bugs worked out, but it calls for a well thought-out, overall business plan. The challenge is creating awareness and a sense of urgency. As this review is being written, the year 1999 is less than two months aways. Y2K will be here too soon. A solid business plan is required--this isn't day light savings time, where we just set our clock's up one hour. Small businesses must get ready now and this handbook can be a valuable asset.
