Bioeconomic Modelling and Valuation of Exploited Marine Ecosystems (Economy & Environment)
J.C.J.M. van den Bergh , J. Hoekstra , R. Imeson , P.A.L.D. Nunes , and A.T. de Blaeij Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402040415 |
Book Description
This book offers an environmental-economic analysis of exploited ecosystems with a clear policy orientation. The study tries to move beyond traditional economic fishery analysis in two respects. First, several theoretical and numerical models are offered that combine economic and ecological descriptions of fisheries. These models give special attention to spatial processes as well as to combining exploitation and conservation objectives. Second, valuation and stakeholder concerns are addressed in empirical analyses employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The latter is done by using advanced methods of monetary valuation. In addition, the first part of the book presents short, introductory overviews of integrated assessment, economic modeling of fishery management, and incorporating uncertainty in fisheries analysis. These introductions will allow readers of a variety of disciplines to create a sufficient background so as to be able to read later parts of the book. This first part also includes a chapter in which traditional and recent ideas on fisheries policy are critically discussed and where possible synthesized. Many of the applied studies reported relate to a multifunctional marine ecosystem area in the Netherlands, known as the Wadden Sea ("Waddenzee"), which extends to Germany and Denmark. The resulting approaches, models and policy insights are nevertheless sufficiently general and innovative to be of interest to a broad audience.

Capital and Time in Ecological Economics: Neo-Austrian Modelling (Advances in Ecological Economics)
John Proops , Stefan Speck , and Frank Jost Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1858986443 |
Book Description
This groundbreaking book focuses on neo-Austrian capital theory and its application to the modelling of long-run economy-environment interactions. The book begins by presenting an overview of the modelling approach and offers an historical survey of capital theory and its development. The authors then provide a detailed introduction to the neo-Austrian modelling technique and extend it to include time horizons and growth models. The model is then applied to environmental issues such as green national accounts, resource rents and climate change to show how the neo-Austrian approach gives fresh and illuminating insights. An empirical application to the iron and steel industry is also presented.
Capital and Time in Ecological Economics will be of interest to ecological and environmental economists, economic capital theorists and all those following developments in the neo-Austrian approach to economics.

Transition to a Sustainable Society: A Backcasting Approach to Modelling Energy and Ecology (Advances in Ecological Economics Series)
Henk A. J. Mulder , and Wouter Biesiot Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1858987318 |
Book Description
The quantity of fossil fuels left on the planet is limited, and their use is subject to further restrictions due to constraints on CO2 emissions. This crisis has brought to the forefront of the political agenda the need for a conversion to a sustainable society. In this compelling book, a backcasting approach based on energy flows is used to evaluate the physical constraints on sustainable development. The starting point for the backcasting approach is the definition of a desired situation at a determined point in the future. This leads to the development of scenarios that connect our present status with the desired future point. This detailed, quantitative approach gives insights into the challenges that lie ahead in order to realise our goal. The book clearly displays large sets of expectations concerning the development of future population size and wealth, technological improvements and resource quantities. These are used to discuss the overall possibility for a transition to a sustainable society and highlight the dilemma between equity and environmental quality. A selection of other energy-scenario studies using different approaches are also discussed and contrasted with the backcasting model. The book concludes with some reflections on the institutional and socio-psychological aspects of a transition to sustainability and recommends a goal-oriented policy to implement this change. Transition to a Sustainable Society will prove essential reading for those with an interest in ecological economics, energy and environmental policy makers, and research planners.

Enhancing Biological Control: Habitat Management to Promote Natural Enemies of Agricultural Pests
Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0520213629 |
Book Description
Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

Trophic and Guild Interactions in Biological Control (Progress in Biological Control)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402047665 |
Book Description
This volume explores modern concepts of trophic and guild interactions among natural enemies in natural and agricultural ecosystems - a field that has become a hot topic in ecology and biological control over the past decade. Internationally recognized scientists have combined their expertise and passion to examine how species interactions between biological control agents, such as competition, predation, parasitism, disease infection, mutualism, and omnivory affect arthropod population dynamics and the outcome of biological control. The common approach is the use of ecological theory to better interpret the prevalence, nature and outcome of trophic and guild interactions and, from a more applied perspective, to gain a comprehensive understanding of how and when to use biological control.

Biological Control by Natural Enemies
Paul Debach Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521203805 |
Book Description
Control of insect pests and weeds by their natural enemies offers a proven, feasible, safe, ecological method to pesticidal control. In this concise and fascinating account, Paul DeBach and David Rosen trace the historical background of biological control and examine in detail some of the most famous examples of the discovery of natural enemies and their implementation as active successful biological controls. The book has been thoroughly updated to incorporate recent studies, projects and developments on all aspects of biological control. Conclusions reached, however, remain the same; more biological control is needed - alone and as the mainstay of integrated pest management programmes - if there is to be a diminished use of toxic chemicals which are more expensive, less effective and most importantly, damaging to the environment. This is a second edition of the highly successful book published in 1974 under the same title.

Inspiring stories of "ordinary" people turned entrepreneurs.......1998-12-23
One of the nice aspects of the book are the pictures of the entrepreneurs. They give you a sense of the person's character when you read the chapters devoted to them and help you visualize what their business activity may have been like.
I think it could have been better if the interviews and segments on each business were a bit longer with more in depth insights. To be fair, the authors claim that in the intro that their goal is to ignite a spark within the reader toward jumpstarting a business idea. To that effect, their book is worthwhile especially since you can finish it quickly.
Throughout this title, I kept slamming my fist on the counter after reading each segment on an entrepreneur thinking to myself, "Damn! If that person could do it with so little, why not me?" You get the picture at the end of the book that there really is nothing holding you back but yourself.
