    Book Description

This book offers an environmental-economic analysis of exploited ecosystems with a clear policy orientation. The study tries to move beyond traditional economic fishery analysis in two respects. First, several theoretical and numerical models are offered that combine economic and ecological descriptions of fisheries. These models give special attention to spatial processes as well as to combining exploitation and conservation objectives. Second, valuation and stakeholder concerns are addressed in empirical analyses employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The latter is done by using advanced methods of monetary valuation. In addition, the first part of the book presents short, introductory overviews of integrated assessment, economic modeling of fishery management, and incorporating uncertainty in fisheries analysis. These introductions will allow readers of a variety of disciplines to create a sufficient background so as to be able to read later parts of the book. This first part also includes a chapter in which traditional and recent ideas on fisheries policy are critically discussed and where possible synthesized. Many of the applied studies reported relate to a multifunctional marine ecosystem area in the Netherlands, known as the Wadden Sea ("Waddenzee"), which extends to Germany and Denmark. The resulting approaches, models and policy insights are nevertheless sufficiently general and innovative to be of interest to a broad audience.

      Book Description

This groundbreaking book focuses on neo-Austrian capital theory and its application to the modelling of long-run economy-environment interactions.

The book begins by presenting an overview of the modelling approach and offers an historical survey of capital theory and its development. The authors then provide a detailed introduction to the neo-Austrian modelling technique and extend it to include time horizons and growth models. The model is then applied to environmental issues such as green national accounts, resource rents and climate change to show how the neo-Austrian approach gives fresh and illuminating insights. An empirical application to the iron and steel industry is also presented.

Capital and Time in Ecological Economics will be of interest to ecological and environmental economists, economic capital theorists and all those following developments in the neo-Austrian approach to economics.

              Book Description

This book applies the concept of sustainable development operationally to the development of the forest, water, agricultural and livestock sectors of one of India's most `underdeveloped' districts. In so doing, the authors undertake a detailed modelling of the linkages between the ecological and economic sectors, making this an original and significant study in methodological terms.

                  Book Description

The quantity of fossil fuels left on the planet is limited, and their use is subject to further restrictions due to constraints on CO2 emissions. This crisis has brought to the forefront of the political agenda the need for a conversion to a sustainable society. In this compelling book, a backcasting approach based on energy flows is used to evaluate the physical constraints on sustainable development. The starting point for the backcasting approach is the definition of a desired situation at a determined point in the future. This leads to the development of scenarios that connect our present status with the desired future point. This detailed, quantitative approach gives insights into the challenges that lie ahead in order to realise our goal. The book clearly displays large sets of expectations concerning the development of future population size and wealth, technological improvements and resource quantities. These are used to discuss the overall possibility for a transition to a sustainable society and highlight the dilemma between equity and environmental quality. A selection of other energy-scenario studies using different approaches are also discussed and contrasted with the backcasting model. The book concludes with some reflections on the institutional and socio-psychological aspects of a transition to sustainability and recommends a goal-oriented policy to implement this change. Transition to a Sustainable Society will prove essential reading for those with an interest in ecological economics, energy and environmental policy makers, and research planners.

                    Description:
Grain and extent of spatially explicit studies in landscape ecology and spatial economics have been reviewed in an assessment of differences between these two disciplines and possibilities for integration. In the latter field, (1) such papers were substantially less frequently found, and (2) median study area grains as well as extents were higher. We found no evidence of a different definition of spatial scale, but did find major differences between the two fields in embedding in theory (well-developed in spatial economy) and spatial realism (better in landscape ecology). Where studies integrated both fields, matching of the spatial scales was generally imposed by the data bases available and kept implicit in the derivation of research aims. In multidisciplinary environmental assessment, explicit matching of scales is often neglected. We evaluate three possible approaches to guide this matching exercise, and conclude that a local compromise for a specific landscape is probably the best achievable. We found no evidence for the existence of a limited set of convergent and globally overarching spatial scales that is of practical use.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-09-30

I used this book to successfully fight a $20,000 debt that was not even mine. It's true that debt collectors do not want you to know your rights. I wrote a total of 4 letters to the agency, gave them documentation on why I didn't owe it (proved that it had actually been paid off) and they left me alone. It even gives sample letters to write. I highly recommend this book based on actual experience.

                      5 out of 5 stars Decent Book.......2006-05-26

This is a decent book. I am a 3L law student thinking of doing collections. This book is an excellent choice for the average person with no legal education. As a law student though I always expect more though but it does set out the basics in an unbiased manner with the law printed in the appendix. Definitely worth the price.

STAY AWAY from To Pay or Not to Pay: Insider Secrets to Beating Credit Card Debt and Creditors by Stanley G. Hilton. I also purchased that book and it was horrible. Even as a 3L I know that many of the "solutions" he outlines are not realistic (suing a doctor for malpractice to stop a collection is pure insanity). Stick with DiMaggio's book.

4 out of 5 stars Collection Agency Harassment: - ok.......2006-04-17

so -so review, Mostly common sense. But a few good tips on mounting a counter attack although it doesn't let you know the practicalities of enforcing the FDCPA, namely that federal and state agencies typically don't respond to your complaints except with a form letter and no action.

                      5 out of 5 stars Empowering!.......2005-06-23

This book gave me the information I needed to take control. Collection agencies do not have a right to harass you when obviously you've hit a rough time. After reading this book I am no longer intimated by a letter or phone call because I now know my rights and how I can use them.

This book was a great source of education and empowering!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Says It All!.......2005-04-05

I would first like to state that I read both of Rich DiMaggio's books: Credit Repair and the other, Collection Agency Harassment. I have also seen him speak. He is an outstanding speaker and a really intelligent man. When I get done listening to him, I finally feel like I have power over "the system". Truthfully--he would probably speak for your group, too, because he has a true passion about these subjects. He gives advice based on 15 years in the courtroom against the credit industry.

These are 2 distinct books, and should not be lumped into one category. There is overlap because debt collectors use our credit reports against us, but the similarities stop there. Mr. DiMaggio will teach you how to draft exacting letters of disputes, and where to send them. He explains the intricacies of the bankruptcy law, charge-offs, divorce, false identities, FICO scoring an more. I don't have a clue what Chrissy is saying about misleading titles. This book is the best I have seen.

                        Book Description

Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

                          Book Description

This volume explores modern concepts of trophic and guild interactions among natural enemies in natural and agricultural ecosystems - a field that has become a hot topic in ecology and biological control over the past decade. Internationally recognized scientists have combined their expertise and passion to examine how species interactions between biological control agents, such as competition, predation, parasitism, disease infection, mutualism, and omnivory affect arthropod population dynamics and the outcome of biological control. The common approach is the use of ecological theory to better interpret the prevalence, nature and outcome of trophic and guild interactions and, from a more applied perspective, to gain a comprehensive understanding of how and when to use biological control.

                          Book Description

This book is the best-ever practical guide to the identification and biology of beneficial organisms that control pests. Growers, pest control advisers, landscape professionals, home gardeners, pest management teachers and students, and anyone fascinated by natural enemies and their prey will want this book to find, identify, and use natural enemies to control pests in almost any agricultural crop, garden, or landscape.
The Natural Enemies Handbook is superbly illustrated with 180 high-quality color photographs and 140 expertly rendered drawings, showing hundreds of predators, parasites, and pathogens that attack pest insects, mites, nematodes, plant pathogens, and weeds. The handy Quick Guide allows readers to locate natural enemies that they are likely to find on almost any crop or in the garden and landscape. They can then go to the main text for clear, detailed information.
Natural enemies are organisms that kill, decrease the reproductive potential, or otherwise reduce the numbers of other organisms. Biological control is the practical use of natural enemies to manage pests. Living natural enemies are the agents of biological control. Virtually every pest has natural enemies that reduce its populations under certain circumstances. The book features chapters on biological control of plant pathogens, nematodes, and weeds as well as individual chapters on parasites, predators, and pathogens of arthropods.
References, suppliers, and a comprehensive index make this an indispensable source book. The up-to-date review of applied biological control literature will appeal to scholars.

                            Book Description

Natural Enemies: An Introduction to Biological Control gives a thorough grounding in the biological control of arthropods, vertebrates, weeds, and plant pathogens through use of natural enemies. The book is intended for undergraduate students and others wishing to learn the basics of biological control. Ann Hajek discusses the reasons why biological control is used, and describes different use strategies and associated safety issues, as well as how best to integrate biological control with other types of pest management. She goes on to describe the basic biology of the different types of natural enemies, and gives examples of successful biological control programs. Throughout this book the ecological relationships that make control possible are emphasized and the major strategies for the use of different types of natural enemies detailed, with discussions of the specific conditions under which each strategy is successful in controlling pests.

                                      Book Description

Control of insect pests and weeds by their natural enemies offers a proven, feasible, safe, ecological method to pesticidal control. In this concise and fascinating account, Paul DeBach and David Rosen trace the historical background of biological control and examine in detail some of the most famous examples of the discovery of natural enemies and their implementation as active successful biological controls. The book has been thoroughly updated to incorporate recent studies, projects and developments on all aspects of biological control. Conclusions reached, however, remain the same; more biological control is needed - alone and as the mainstay of integrated pest management programmes - if there is to be a diminished use of toxic chemicals which are more expensive, less effective and most importantly, damaging to the environment. This is a second edition of the highly successful book published in 1974 under the same title.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2003-01-24

This book is about 101 successful businesses and how they got started. Although it does not contain details on how to start a business, it contains lots of good ideas and lots of inspiration, two important qualities of a entrepeneur. You will enjoy reading some better known businesses like Terra Chips as well as lesser known ones like Three Dog Bakery who makes gourmet biscuits for dogs. It's amazing a dog biscuit company makes over a million dollars a year, but since this book is about young millionaires, every company profiled in this book makes over this amount.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Source of Inspiration.......1999-06-14

This book is a real inspiration. What it is really saying is that if you have an idea that's crazy enough, that's probably your million-dollar idea. You just have to believe in it, applying both reason and faith. And you can succeed. There are certainly other books out there with more practical information, but this book can start you dreaming. So go out, rent a sailboat, put on your Duke Ellington tapes, pour yourself a glass of cranberry juice, light a cigar, take off your socks...and dream!

                                        1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......1999-02-20

After anxiously waiting for this book to arrive, it only took me a couple of hours to read it. The stories on each entrepeneur were too brief. It tells you how each of them came about w/ their ideas but does not at all provide any information on what exact steps they took to be successful. I was very disappointed. It was a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring stories of "ordinary" people turned entrepreneurs.......1998-12-23

Overall, I liked it. I would recommend buying it or at least renting it from the library and reading it. You could easily read it in one or two days. If you are, or ever had the idea of starting something on your own, this is a great book to fuel those dreams and ambitions. It showcases a wide array of people from different backgrounds who successfully started businesses.

One of the nice aspects of the book are the pictures of the entrepreneurs. They give you a sense of the person's character when you read the chapters devoted to them and help you visualize what their business activity may have been like.

I think it could have been better if the interviews and segments on each business were a bit longer with more in depth insights. To be fair, the authors claim that in the intro that their goal is to ignite a spark within the reader toward jumpstarting a business idea. To that effect, their book is worthwhile especially since you can finish it quickly.

Throughout this title, I kept slamming my fist on the counter after reading each segment on an entrepreneur thinking to myself, "Damn! If that person could do it with so little, why not me?" You get the picture at the end of the book that there really is nothing holding you back but yourself.
