5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2003-11-16

I was required to read this book for an intercultural communications class in college. Upon completion, I am now a communications major, and have completely changed my outlook on life. This is one of the best books I have ever read, but you have to have a open mind about the topics being discussed. It is definately thought provoking. This is not a text book, but a collection of stories about instances in peoples lives. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Despite its centrality to the political life of India and Pakistan, Kashmir has met with rather perfunctory treatment from historians of South Asia. The few works of history and politics that have appeared on this region, moreover, insist on defining Kashmiri culture, history, and identity in
terms of the ahistorical concept of Kashmiriyat, or a uniquely Kashmiri cultural identity. This book, in contrast, questions the notion of any transcendent cultural uniqueness and Kashmiriyat by returning Kashmir to the mainstream of South Asian historiography. It examines the hundred-year impact of
indirect colonial rule on Kashmirs class formation. It studies the uses (and abuses) made of Kashmirs political elites by the state. It looks at the responses of Kashmirs society to social and economic restructuring. It shows that while all these historical changes had a profound impact on the
political culture of the Kashmir Valley, there is nothing very inevitable or quite definite about the 'political regionalism' and 'Islamic particularism' of this area. Using local language sources and every important archive, this major history of the formation of Kashmir shows precisely how the
Kashmir Valley assumed the position it has come to occupy in postcolonial South Asia.

2 out of 5 stars Deeply flawed analysis of recent Kashmir history.......2006-07-27

To understand the `making of Kashmir', it is important to discover the spirit and soul of this land with a history going back thousands of years.A scholar concerned with only a fragment of this long history must still take a holistic perspective in order to identify the unique character of the land. This book is a scholarly study of a relatively recent period in the history of Kashmir(1846-1953),the period of Dogra rule An overall perspective has not been provided and the reader has no opportunity to understand even the bare essentials of Hindu,Buddhist , Islamic and Sikh periods . Zutshi has glossed over or ignored evidence supporting the rich tradition of tolerance and mutual respect between Hindus and Muslims which survived several periods of persecution of the Kashmir Pandit minority.Based partly on unreliable sources and partly on flawed interpretation, Zutshi has made sweeping ,unresearched statements about the post-1953 period which is,in any case, outside the scope of the project.Consequently,a strong bias in favour of minority separatists permeates the book.

    Book Description

In a world of migration and shifting allegiances--the state is a more provisional place and its inhabitants more stateless. What is contained in a state has become ever more plural while the boundaries of a state have become ever more fluid. No longer does a state naturally come with a nation.
This book is set in the form of a conversation between two renowned thinkers, Judith Butler and Gayatri Spivak, who discuss the fact that globalization has made things like national anthems and political boundaries obsolete. The result is a spirited and engaging conversation that ranges widely across Palestine, what Enlightenment and key contemporary philosophers have said about the state, who exercises power in today's world, whether we can have a right to rights, and even what the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" in Spanish says about the complex world we live in today.

            Book Description

Freud's interpretation of the ancient legend of Oedipus -- as formulated in Sophocles' tragic drama -- is among the most widely known concepts of psychoanalysis. Euripides' Ion, however, presents a more complex version of the development of personal identity. Here, the discovery of family origins is a process in which parent and child both take part as distinct agents driven by their own impulses of violence and desire.

Euripides, Freud, and the Romance of Belonging studies the construction of identity and the origins of the primal trauma in two texts, the Ion and Freud's case history of the Wolf Man. Victoria Pedrick challenges the conventional psychoanalytic theory of the development of the individual within the family, presenting instead a richer and more complex economy of exchange between the parent and the child. She provides a new perspective on Freud's appropriation of ancient texts and moves beyond the familiar reunion in Oedipus to the more nuanced scene of abandonment present in Ion. Her parallel investigation of these texts suggests that contemporary culture remains preoccupied by the problems of the past in the determination of identity.

Pedrick's fresh perspectives on both texts as well as on their relationship to each other shed new light on two foundational moments in the intellectual development of the West: Greek tragedy and Freudian psychoanalysis.

                  Book Description

Microsoft Access is the most popular desktop database in the world today and its very popularity means that its security measures can be easily compromised. "Securing Your Microsoft Access Database" takes a different approach to all the other Access books in the market in that it focuses from the start on all the issues that will help protect your database. The book approaches protection and security from a task-by-task perspective and provides detail on all the little things that when put together will make your database more secure. This will achieve things like keep your staff from looking at your salary tables, stopping your customers from looking at the design of your software that you distribute and helping you decide which security options are worth doing and which generally a waste of your time. The book has an IT manager's overview on all topics so that managers can assess the risk of different strategies. Where the topics are at an administrator's level, the book provides a visual step-by-step guide to implementing and undoing the settings. Finally, as Garry is very experienced in writing for developers, the book goes into the detail of programming all types of security issues such as hiding tables as system tables, producing databases that password cracker software cannot crack (easily), backing up databases, menus, queries and even user surveillance.

                  One Amazon.com reader says...

"This book is exactly what it proports to be. It covers all the Access versions being used in the development world - 97 to 2003. It does not spend half to 2/3 of the book on basic Access tables, querries, reports or vb code that developers already know, but from the first page to the last covers security and protection. A must have for any Access developer or power user."

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-02-28

Gary Robinson is a master at Access security and this book proves it! This is one of the books that stays on the shelf close to me when I am developing. It has great resources for setting up different types of security and he provides forms and code to help you develop security based on your needs. I highly recommend this for developers, especially those who are just designing more complex databases and need a good background on security. He is such a great resource that I subscribe to his newsletter now! I can only hope that he writes another book soon! A+

5 out of 5 stars Real Security for Access.......2007-01-04

All of the other reviews pretty much say it all, but I wanted to place a more recent review in the list. Although I have just started using some of the basics Gary clearly discusses, I am anxious to get to the rest. Being able to secure Access has always been in the back of my mind. Now I know I can tackle the issue and get it done in a consistent manner that I can carry into all my Access projects. Thanks for the good work Garry.

5 out of 5 stars MS Access Database Workgroup Security........2006-05-10

A good book will find the reader. I would like to thank Mr. Robinson for a well written read. Besides all the other things I have in my life to do I was able to finish his work in about two weeks. I have read all the other reviews; there is nothing I can add. I can however tell you that if you are into Access database (and you know if you are) then this book is an imperative. I have had many books on Access database pass my way, nothing compares with Mr. Robinsons' book on security and protection.

Mr. Robinsons' is the first technical book on Access I have ever read from cover to cover with a never ending want to turn the page to see what Mr. Robinson was going to teach me next. I'm going to begin a reread of his work and this time I'm going to use the examples with both Northwind and my own database to incorporate his methods; especially enjoying combining the OS and workgroup security to provide my data a secure base from my clients, friends and enemies.

His book provided me ample margin to take copious notes along with my read, it will prove helpful in preparing for deployment. Mr. Robinson is a professional database administrator and this book is written as from such, you will think like he does at the end of this read and be the better for it. Mr. Robinson is a wonderful dbase admin, author, and now teacher. Again many thanks for his efforts and a heartfelt appreciation for my newly gained knowledge. Should Mr. Robinson ever have a worldwide tour on the subject, sign me up.

All of the reviews are positive, I suggest a review of Mr. Robinsons' Table of Contents and more important, the wonderful Index. A review of these documents will give you better insight into the level of Access database security Mr. Robinson clearly and distinctly explains. Mr. Robinson has the world's attention on this security subject and rightfully deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for MS Access Security.......2005-12-21

This has got to be the best MS Access resource book that I have purchased. Like others, I have found MS Access security hard to understand but with Gary Robinson's help I am now getting a grasp on how I can keep sensitive data secure. The book is aimed at those who are new to security as well as those with experience. Also, the downloable database, with forms and code that you can easily use in your own applications, is a real time saver.

I especially like how he has broken down the overview for each chapter with segments aimed at Developers, DBA's and the IT Managers. In these overviews he explains what in the chapter is important to the reader by their role. The book is arranged so you can easily locate the information you need and not have to go through the whole book to be able to accomplish your security goal. But I recommend that you do read the entire book as it has so much to offer! I am on my second read through.

                  Book Description

There are now many introductory courses in aquaculture given at colleges and universities, but there is a lack of appropriate general textbooks for such courses. This book aims to fill this gap by providing a broad and readable overview of the subject. The focus is on aquatic animal
production, mainly of finfish and shellfish, but aquatic plants are also mentioned. Both fresh and salt water, and warm and cool water production are covered. The author concentrates on presenting principles, rather than providing detail on how to produce particular organisms, such as shrimp or
salmon. He describes all aspects of the subject, from business planning, through site and water systems selection, to management of the system once it is in operation. The interests of both developed and developing countries are covered, as is the current debate about the environmental impact of
                  aquaculture.

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory text for general aquaculture course.......2006-03-05

Aquaculture is a business heavily dependent upon life sciences and engineering. This books provides a good overview that I found useful in my teaching. Rather than focussing on specifics using case studies as many other boods do, it tries, with decent success, to focus on broader concepts that apply to a variety of species whether plant, invert or vertebrate, fresh water, brackish or marine, and whether grown in closed or open systems. I found it useful for a broad introductory course.

                  Looking for a job?

                  Changing careers?

                  Returning to the workforce?

                  Trying to find balance?

                  Rethinking your lifestyle?

                  Searching for fulfillment?

When you come to an important crossroads in life-particularly when it is forced upon you by an unexpected or unhappy event-it is human nature to ask, "Where have I gone wrong?"

That is not the right question to ask. As a matter of fact, such brooding and negative thinking will take you entirely in the wrong direction, away from where you really want to go.

The better question to ask-the question that opens doors, creates opportunities and helps take you where you want to go-is: "Where Have I Gone Right?"

In Where Have I Gone Right? The Right Mountain Guide to Getting the Job and Life You Want, Jim Hayhurst offers his simple, unique approach to making key decisions and living a more satisfying life. His engaging, conversational writing, compelling metaphors and anecdotes from his years as a career counselor and business leader make this simple and practical guidebook the new standard for managing your career — and your life.

5 out of 5 stars Getting It Right the First Time!.......2004-03-25

I read Where Have I Gone Right? this weekend. It is simple, direct, positive and easy to read. Frankly, after
spending time working through Bolles's What Colour is Your Parachute?, I wish I had met this book first. Where Have I Gone Right? asks the essential question and demands the critical work be done first - determining who am I? Without actually having done the "gone right" process (I intend to do so)this work gets to point more effectively and adds important dimensions and communication strategies such as reference points and personal allegories -that separate and enhance what Bolles and others have done for job and life seekers. In a very few hours this book gave me the understanding and the positive tools to get accomplishments, skills, values, relationships into synch-- and to help tell my story in a more distinctive and powerful way.

If word of mouth can be a tipping point for a new career and
life change manual-- Where Have I Gone Right? has my word and I will spread it to anyone who needs or wants to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air.......2004-03-09

I picked up this book in the midst of my career search, and I am very glad I did. After completing the book, which was an easy read but contained meaningful lessons, I realized I needed to first take stock of myself. The book, "Where Have I Gone Right?" is a must read for anyone who is frustrated, confused, or on the edge of insanity during their job search. It is not an easy process, but with the help of this book you will start applying to the jobs that you are interested and passionate about. I highly reccomend this book at any point in a persons life, the lessons drawn out of its excercises are relevant to anybody, at any point in their lives

5 out of 5 stars Where Have I Gone Right?.......2004-02-17

After reading Jim Hayhurst Sr.'s first book, "The Right Mountain," I was eager to read his second book, "Where Have I Gone Right?"
This latest book is an insightful, and well thought out book. It is an easy read, and yet delivers strong, and important messages along the way. It has a structure that allows one to first learn about themselves, and then apply this new understanding to any aspect of ones life.
                  A great read for anyone.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great concise guidebook.......2004-02-09

Unlike some of the giant career books on the market today, Hayhurst keeps this guidebook concise. For this reason, I think that job seekers might actually use the whole thing. The book's introductory section is designed to give readers confidence in the methods espoused by the book - and a commitment to putting its lessons to use. This is followed by the core of the book which is divided into two equal parts: "Who Am I?" (self-assessment) and "Getting the Job and Life You Want" (the job search).

For many career seekers and career changers, the job search section has plenty of information to get them on their way. Its brevity is a real asset - especially considering the fact that there is not a lot new to be said about preparing resumes, information interviewing, and so on. The real focus of this book (and Hayhurst's counselling) is on self-assessment. By giving the self-assessment section equal billing to the rest of the job search, rather than making it one of four or five components of the job search, he raises its importance in the readers' mind appropriately.

If readers really invest themselves in this "Who Am I?" section of the book, they will come away with not only a much better understanding of themselves, but also a much greater ability to describe and market themselves. By taking readers on an exploration of their accomplishments, Hayhurst sets the foundation for discovering their skills, interests, and - most importantly - their core values. His focus on core values is critical to the whole process.

A great defining aspect of this program is that the self-assessment process is only complete when it results in the development of a "reference point" and, ideally, a "personal allegory". In a nutshell, a reference point is a "core accomplishment" with the most personally defining elements. As the name implies, this reference point can act as a litmus test against which readers can evaluate new opportunities. A "personal allegory" is a tool that helps evoke a vivid image that not only helps describe an individual, but also makes them more memorable within their network of contacts - and of course with interviewers.

Like any good book in this field, it will be made only better by the support of a counsellor. However, this really is a workbook and a great, concise, and refreshing one at that.
