The New Era of Wealth : How Investors Can Profit from the Five Economic Trends Shaping the Future
ASIN: 0938721704 |
Amazon.com
When you call a book World Boom Ahead, you make it abundantly clear that you're not expecting to see the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding into Washington or Tokyo anytime soon. How good does Kiplinger expect things to get? He sees two more decades of 1990s-like growth for the U.S. economy, with continued low inflation and increasing productivity. He sees the rest of the world starting to catch up to the economic prowess of the wealthy West, with the biggest developing nations--India, China, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia--doubling their share of world GDP, to about 16 percent.
Still, Kiplinger, editor in chief of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, manages to keep his optimism bridled. Wherever there's a dictatorship or corrupt government, economic prosperity will be put on hold. And, of course, regional wars will still flare up. In other words, Kiplinger sees a world a lot like this one, only more prosperous globally. But even if the predictions in World Boom Ahead aren't particularly startling, the analyses backing them up are worth the time it takes to read and digest them. For example, in a section on why U.S. savings rates are low relative to other nations', Kiplinger notes that savings tend to decline when people feel confident about their economic future. In another section, he shows that taxes have remained about 20 percent of the U.S. GDP since the end of World War II, contrary to the idea that there has been an ever-increasing tax burden in the late 20th century. Part celebration of the achievements that put us in such prosperous times, part analysis of why those good times should continue, and part economics lesson, World Boom Ahead is a consistently fascinating look at our fiscal present and future. --Lou Schuler

Wow! His crystal ball was in top shape!.......2006-08-11
Just go to page 379 and look at the rogues gallery of criminal operations he was suggesting investing in. Gee if only I got this book new and not at a yard sale I could have thrown a lotta money down on say ENRON. By the way if you do want to buy this you can contact me directly. I am selling this little bridge named Brooklyn.
It would be a great investment for that great "World Boom Ahead"!
World Boom Ahead : Why Business and Consumers Will Prosper.......2000-04-16
I had high expecations for this book, since I have always enjoyed the Kiplinger Newsletter and often read the magazine. What I found in this book was allot of dated information, there are many others books that have current data that would be much more worth your time.
World Boom Ahead.......1999-12-25
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone. I have great respect for Kiplinger, and I say this because I used to subscribe to the newsletter and more importantly, I read their 1989 book, America in the Global 90s. At that time, America had high inflation and interest rates, Japan was booming, and it was viewed that America was declining. Kiplinger took exception to this view. Among other things, they said were that Amercia would adjust because it is open and adaptable, that technology and telecommunications would be hot (they said that telecommunications is what railroads and rivers were in the past to cities). They also said that inflation and interest rates would decline significantly (remember 20% inflation and rates?) and stocks would boom (his forecast was for 6000, up from about 1800-2000 then). Also, gold and silver would lag other investments.
An important and controversial belief was that the US has an edge on Japan because it is a more open society and economy.
Of course not all predictions can true (for example, he didn't expect Asian tigers to crash), but anyone paying attention to his forecast who have made a bundle in the 90s.
In fact, some of his predictions in this new book already are happening - he says unbelievable fortunes will be created as companies go public, soar in value and then are bought out by bigger companies. Look at what has happened in 1999 year with Internet and Liniux companies (his book came out 1998)...
a well written well documented powerful book.......1999-09-14
kiplinger puts the entire world into perspective inserting today into a factual and historical mix that graphs where we have been, where we are, and exactly where we are headed...sheer greatness.
This book and the author are visionary.......1999-06-21
As a teacher of economics in high school I teach the kids about personal finance. Personal finance includes investing. In order to invest one must do the research on not only the companies. One must understand where the world is headed and Mr. Kiplinger does that. He offers views that are visionary and achievable. Examples include the coming changes in transportation, the evolution of satellite services. The growth of the internet and how a rising world population does not have to be a bad thing and can be an engine for economic growth. I can use this information to show my students how a rising population will lead to increases in demand for new homes and other services. I can use it to show them what kinds of jobs will be important to the new era that we are embarking upon at the end of the millenium in 2001. The future of America and the world is brighter then could have been predicted ten or twenty years ago. This book has helped me to do the research on the various fields and the companies that are involved in them. By explaining how each sector of the economy will grow I have been able to identify the sectors that I feel will grow the best over the long term. World Boom Ahead is an integral part of my strategy of investing in companies for thelong term. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy of it for my father.

If you want to be an opportunity seeker, this is it!.......2000-04-03
I would rank this book side by side with Edward de Bono's "Opportunities: A Handbook of Business Opportunity Search". I have read both books in the late 80's.
In the field of deliberate opportunity search, these are the only three books that have been written on the subject, as far as I know. This is one of them.
Strategy-wise, and from the strategic business/competitive perspective, this book has an EDGE over the other two books in the genre.
The theme of the book is making innovation a learnable, repeatable & disciplined business practice. In this respect, the author has done a great job. Additionally, he has also identified the ten opportunity-sensitive areas (or windows of opportunity) in business, and also outlined strategies and tips to help you work out your action plans to pursue them systematically. In a way, he has expanded on what Peter Drucker has covered earlier in the latter's book, 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship' in which the latter has identified only seven sources of innovative opportunities.
I have also read most of the author's other books. His forte is strategic thinking - more precisely, strategic exploration. Excellent stuff throughout, with penetrating insights and real-world examples to follow, and the author's writing is very crisp, succinct and clear, just like his other books.
If you want to be an opportunity seeker, please read this book!
Book Description
As concerned citizens recognize that the vibrancy of urban centers goes hand-in-hand with the vitality of the surrounding rural areas, a farmers' market renaissance is beginning throughout the country. Helping to increase local market success for both farmers and customers, this book serves as a three-part guide to marketing, being a resource for farmers or market gardeners selling their produce at farmers’ markets; for city planners or market managers in starting and building a market; and for community activists and city planners trying to foster appreciation for farmland while reinvigorating economic and social vitality in urban areas. Appendices cover insurance, customer surveys, farmers’ market profitability, and benefits of farmers’ markets.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to Read and great info.......2007-08-22
I bought this the other day and I am so glad that I did. We are moving to NC and going to start a hobby farm and sell at local produce markets. This is a great book. A true wealth of information and to think I almost didn't buy it. Can't go wrong with this book.
Worth Every Dollar.......2007-01-10
I have never before read a book with so much detailed information that still manages to give a great over view of it's subject. If you are into marketing your own produce, at your own stand or in a farmer's market, you are going to want to have this book. If you want to start a Farmer's market, this book is beyond value, it is a bible.
Sell your produce!.......2006-02-26
Eric Gibson is an agricultural journalist who wrote, along with Bud Kerr, "Sell what you Sow" in 1994. This book, written in conjunction with authors Vance Corum and Marcie Rozenweig, is an improvement on Gibson's previous book with updated information intended for anyone marketing their own produce. Learn how to succeed at farmers' markets. It covers the latest tips and trends from leading-edge sellers and managers from farmers markets across the country. Learn best products to grow and sell, learn display, merchandising, and selling tips, setting prices, managing and promoting the market, setting up an internet web site, dealing with rules and regulations, building community support for buying locally, and market issues and challenges. This book is a valuable resource for city planners, farmers market managers, as well as growers.
With its practical "how-to" approach, the many marketing ideas in this book will inspire you. Gibson gives you all the details needed to start a successful business selling and growing your own produce.
The best of all the market books I've read!.......2002-09-11
The cover is kind of "blah" but there's lots and lots of really god solid information inside. In fact, so far every question I've had has been addressed. A lot of the other books seem big on theory ("You must be organized!") but this book has the nuts and bolts. In fact, it's the only one that sits on my desk. The others are nicely preserved on my bookshelf.
What to do when you participate or start a farmers' market?.......2001-11-10
The answer is read this book! You don't have to be a student of marketing or have a masters degree to become an excellent marketer of your farm products. "The New Farmers' Market" is a great way to get your ideas rolling for you as a farmers' market manager or even a vendor. Information is presented in a clear, almost common sense way. As a marketing specialist for a government agency, this is a great asset to my library of resources for my clients.

Easy to read & understand, especially for first-timers.......1999-09-06
Friends and family actually think I've campaigned before, when all I've done is study Ms. Golden's book! This book has been a fantastic resource for me, who, even with two co-managers (fellow rookies) helping out with my first campaign, is taking on alot of the management tasks. You'll have a lot of details to attend to during your campaign; this book has tables and end-of-chapter summaries to help you avoid dumb mistakes and keep your campaign machinery humming.
If time is short and an organized campaign is essential, then so is this book.

Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature
ASIN: 0121785602 |
Book Description
Some 360 million years ago the ancestors of today's reptiles and amphibians emerged from the sea to take on the challenge of land. This successful venture climaxed in a spectacular 140-million-year domination of the Earth by the dinosaurs. Today there are more than 11,000 species of reptiles and amphibians living in all parts of the world. Their behavior and physiology are as complex as those of birds and mammals, and they are equally well-adapted to the astonishingly varied environments they inhabit. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between the species and their habitats will it be possible for us to ensure their survival. This Second Edition of
Reptiles and Amphibians is a magnificently illustrated book, with highly comprehensive and authoritative text, written by the world's leading herpetologists. The book has more than 200 superb color photographs and 100 original paintings, maps, and diagrams. It is an up-to-date and definitive volume that chronicles the life-histories of some of nature's most secretive yet remarkable creatures.
Customer Reviews:
A fine reference.......2001-06-27
I am not trained in zoology and approach this subject as a complete amateur and a beginner amateur at that. This book is lavishly illustrated with expert and precise drawings as well as breathtaking photography that is more than adequat in conveying the beauty and complexity of the book's subject matter.
The "Key Facts" corner of every chapter gives useful basic information, e.g. the biggest and smallest of snakes, lizards or whatever - and how many are endangered. One cutaway view of a rattlesnake's rattle is particularly fascinating, though it only leaves me asking for more internal anatomical views.
While the writing is generally good, it sometimes lapses into a specialist's jargon that leaves us amateurs scratching our heads. Even when words like "lamellae" and "setae" are explained, might it just suffice to call them "overlapping plates" and "projections" respectively when discussing how geckos can "stroll on the ceiling"? I found myself looking back to check on what term meant what. Also, rather than a photograph, a drawing of the gecko foot might be more revealing - and there the scientific terms could be introduced.
But this is a minor complaint. I have no regrets whatsover about purchasing this book. it is a brilliant and spectacular tribute to the animal world's great wonders.
A Great Book for anyone, from the ameteur to the expert.......2000-05-03
