Book Description

An unprecedented pro bono effort by Jossey-Bass Publishers and Chronicle Books.

Americans young and old, rich and poor, in cities and in rural areas, from all faiths and races, come together to volunteer.

Voices from the Heart is a tribute to this spirit of giving and the ideal of community. Author Brian O'Connell and editor Rebecca Buffam Taylor present a moving portrait of compassion at work. We meet volunteers from across the country and hear their passionate voices speak about what they do and why. Compelling images by leading photojournalists add to the story of each volunteer's work and its rich rewards.

A nonprofit joint Andeavor by Chronicle Books, Jossey-Bass Publishers, and major national foundations, profits from the sale of Voices from the Heart will go to INDEPENDENT SECTOR, a nonprofit group dedicated to America's volunteer organizations.

Everyone who gives time and effort to help other people or important causes will appreciate this homage to the manifold benefits of volunteering.

5 out of 5 stars The interviews are descriptive and the pictures are intense........1998-11-17

Brian O'Connell's Voices From The Heart, profiles 25 active volunteers from around the United States. The volunteers range in age and all are working on a variety of projects that help make the world a better place. The new book is perfect for a coffee table or holiday gift. I read many profiles on my way back from San Francisco and I couldn't put the book down.

Book Description

A remarkable book, the only one I know that focuses on how 'ordinary citizens' can learn to lead. Well-written and down-to-earth, more importantly, it is powerful testimony to the possibilities within all of us.
--Warren Bennis, university professor and Distinguished Professor of Business Administration, School of Business Administration, University of Southern California

Offers a practical set of tools to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for effective leadership, and shows how individuals without a title or position of power can pursue their passion and fit leadership opportunities to their specific talents.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Must Read.......2005-10-23

This book helps everyone understand they are a leader. It also helps you to find out where you may want to lead.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2001-10-23

This book is an excellent leadership resource, especially for those just beginning to explore leadership definitions. I have used it in leadership training and it is well written and has good illustrations that make the ideas very real and practical.

5 out of 5 stars A book for everyone who wants to make a difference.......1999-09-14

This is a book for all persons who dream of making a difference. It helps you get past mental models of inadequacy and then gives some explicit stories of persons who did some pretty remarkable things although they never had a title or position of authority. To lead is to serve is the major premise of the book. Belongs in the hands of every person in every community.

    Product Description

A Voice for Nonprofits received the American Political Science Association's Leon Epstein Award for its "outstanding contribution to research and scholarship on political organizations and parties." Nonprofit organizations are playing an increasingly important role in delivering basic government services. Yet they are discouraged by federal law from participating in legislative lobbying efforts--even on issues that affect their clients directly. Without the involvement of nonprofits in the governmental process, the vulnerable populations they serve are left without effective representation in the political system. A Voice for Nonprofits analyzes the effect of government restrictions on the participation of nonprofits in the policymaking process and suggests ways to address the problems. The relationship between nonprofits and the government is ideal in many respects, according to Jeffrey M. Berry and David F. Arons. By underwriting operating budgets and subcontracting the administration of programs to nonprofits, governments at all levels are able to take advantage of nonprofits’ dedication, imagination, and private fund-raising skills. However, as nonprofits assume greater responsibility for delivering services traditionally provided by government, that responsibility is not matched by a congruous increase in policy influence. Berry and Arons believe the lobbying restrictions should be eased so that nonprofits may become more involved in public policymaking. Their recommendations are designed to ensure that nonprofit organizations--and the constituencies they serve--are effectively represented in the American political system.

5 out of 5 stars Needs to be read by every social activist.......2004-02-07

Informatively written by Jeffrey M. Berry (Professor of Political Science, Tufts University) with the assistance of David F. Arons (Co-Director of Charity Lobbying in the Public Interest), A Voice For Nonprofits examines and addresses the dilemma of nonprofit organizations, which increasingly provide basic government services yet are discouraged by federal law from participating in legislative lobbying efforts. Analyzing these restrictions on the participation of nonprofit organizations in policy making processes, and offering ways to address the problems caused between an imbalance of communication let alone legislation, A Voice For Nonprofits offers crucial insight into a very real modern problem. A Voice For Nonprofits needs to be read by every social activist, as well as every non-profit organization manager, director, and those who serve on board of directors.

3 out of 5 stars More HRT than Menopause.......2001-02-24

Despite its title and the fact that the author has another book, "The Estrogen Answer Book," specifically about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), this books seems to deal mostly with HRT as opposed to menopause per se. "The Estrogen Answer Book" is more recent, which is important in light of rapidly changing medical opinions and outcomes of studies in the past few years. On the positive side, this book is easy to understand, and while she seems rather pro-HRT, Jacobowitz does not promote a "one size fits all" solution.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent source of information for women.......1999-01-01

I am the author of this book which is now in 13 languages, which proves that women worldwide suffer with the same problems and have similar questions about their menopausal and postmenopausal health. I think this book is an excellent primer and should be followed by reading my newest book, The Estrogen Answer Book: 150 Most-Asked Questions About Hormone Replacement Therapy. I have attempted, and most reviewers say succeeded, to educate women about how we age and empower them to get good health care. I have reminded women that our health is too important to abrogate its care to anyone other than ourselves. These books suggest which kinds of physicians to see for which problems and also suggest what questions a woman might wish to ask. Further they suggest how to get what you need from your physician, no matter how busy that physician is the day of your appointment.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book for every woman and every man who loves her.......1999-01-01

Over the past 10 years when I have been out giving seminars on menopause and osteoporosis, and now on estrogen, women and men would come forward to ask me about the subjects they still perceive to be "taboo." Subjects came up about lack of libido, erectile dysfunction, sexual boredom in a long term relationship, masturbation, extra marital affairs, safe sex, safer sex, no sex----I could go on and on. And so in addition to the 35,000 questionnaires I had already used for my books on menopause and osteoporosis, I distributed another 6700 questionnaires about our midlife sex lives.

The responses were illuminating, astounding, helpful. My responders were open, honest, and clear in their desire to improve their intimate relationships. I interviewed couples, singles, both gay and straight individuals. I interviewed women and men of many ages and in many stages of life.

Further, I ran focus groups in my home where the information flowed freely as each person present was aware that no one in that group would repeat anything heard there. Those interviewees, those present in the focus groups are represented throughout the book. They are real people, whose occupations and locales have been changed greatly in order to protect their privacy.

I am very proud of this book and have received letters, calls, and e-mails from women and men all over the world who felt they had found their way on the path to quality relationships after reading the book.

I hope "150 Most-Asked Questions About Midlife Sex, Love, and Intimacy"

will help you and make you happy, too.
