Book Description

"The key to investment success, if there be just one, is the ability to remain emotionally detached. That detachment is only achieved through confidence. That confidence is only arrived at through knowledge. That knowledge is arrived at through thought, study, hard work, and experience. In this book, I will try to impart the knowledge and experience I have acquired over the last thirty years." — Richard Arms from the Introduction to Trading Without Fear

Richard Arms' revolutionary theories have changed the way investors perceive the market. His expertise in the field of technical analysis has had significant impact, evidenced by the fact that his Equivolume charting system is now part of the most popular stock and futures software, and his Arms Index—also known as the Short-Term Trading Index or TRIN—has become one of the most important technical tools of Wall Street.

In Trading Without Fear, Richard Arms shows investors how to make sound investment decisions "without succumbing to those two very powerful emotions": fear and greed. Learning to control those emotions in ourselves—while recognizing them in others—empowers us to capitalize on that knowledge. The result is informed investment choices, tempered by caution, and fueled by confidence and a strong desire to succeed.

Arms' cogent examination of leading strategies will enable the average investor to master successfully what is widely regarded as one of the most reliable methods of long-term market forecasting: volume analysis. Volume analysis is rooted in a seminal Arms theory—that volume plays as significant a role in understanding the markets as price movement. And volume is affected by the emotions at work in the marketplace. "The market is very complex. It is pushed one way or the other in varying degrees as a result of individual decisions of millions of participants. Some of those partici-pants are acting logically and others are acting emotionally...it is the volume which is giving us the real picture of the emotions in the marketplace. Price tells us what is happening, but volume tells us how it is happening."

Trading Without Fear offers investors a trading discipline with in-depth coverage of:

With his succinct analytical skills and unique approach, Richard Arms makes sophisticated investment strategies accessible to everyday, individual investors.

Trading Without Fear

"Mr. Arms elegantly combines many different aspects of volume analysis in this book. Volume is related to stock market breadth via the Arms Index, and to price via Equivolume charting. Volume Weighted Moving Averages and the Ease of Movement Indicator complete the picture. If you are interested in how to quantify the driving force of the market, this book is for you." — John Bollinger, CFA, CMT President, Bollinger Capital Management Editor, The Capital Growth Letter

"Analysts and traders will acquire confidence and control fear through carefully studying and applying the unique insights available in Trading Without Fear. This book sums up much of the inventive genius of Richard Arms, the 1995 winner of the coveted Market Technicians Award. The famed Arms Index and other unique indicators including Equivolume, Ease of Movement and Volume Cyclicacity are presented in clear terms and in a logical progression filled with penetrating insights into how to profit in the market." — Henry O. Pruden, PhD Professor, Golden Gate University Executive Director, Institute for Technical Market Analysts

4 out of 5 stars A good book of technical analysis & not trading psychology.......2002-09-05

The book title is quite misleading. However, this had not reduced the value or quality of this technical analysis tool book.

The author, with simple words, fluently explains about several Volume related technical tools such as Arms Index, Box Ratio and Volume Adjusted Moving Averages VAMA. Market tactics, like how, when and what to sell short and to cover shorts when you are right and when you are wrong, are elaborated with sound writing skill and clear examples.

In short, worth a read.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book, But Not A Great Book.......2001-04-29

The market is not driven by logic, i.e. good earnings, good products, etc. but by emotions, such as greed and fear, particularly at the turning points. It is the emotional response to the news, rather than the news itself, which determines the effect. Emotions can be better displayed graphically by volume analysis, especially by using the volume indicators developed by Richard Arms. The market operates as a function of volume, not a function of time.

I personally have had excellent results with Arm's "Volume Adjusted Moving Averages",which gives a far superior early warning signal than other MA's. It was therefore disappointing to find that the book only hints at the techniques to be applied. ( an outstanding book in this regard, is Stan Weinsteins "Profiting in Bull And Bear Markets). Arm's techniques are revolutionary, make a lot of sense, and give a different perspective. The book is worth a read for that alone.

Book Description

The Knowledge Evolution offers a unique and powerful road map for understanding knowledge creation, learning, and performance in everyday work. This book reframes current thinking by delving into the hidden world of knowledge supporting both individual and organizational performance, laying the foundation for the emerging art of knowledge management. Packed with best practices from leading edge companies, essential guidelines, design principles, analogies, and conceptual frameworks, it serves as a practical guidebook for mastering the Knowledge Era. It will help managers make more intelligent decisions about knowledge creation, reduce wasteful technology investments and lead to new ease and confidence in applying knowledge and learning principles for themselves and for their organizations.

Verna Allee delves into current thinking and practice to unravel the genetic code of knowledge itself. This revolutionary approach has surfaced a simple and elegant knowledge archetype. She demonstrates how this archetype can help us deal with complexity and suggests ways of self-organizing that make profound sense in today's networked enterprises. From strategies for core knowledge competencies to the key components of individual expertise, The Knowledge Evolution zeroes in on the critical success factors for the knowledge-based enterprise. What emerges is an approach to knowledge management that is simple enough to communicate at every level of the organization, yet rich enough to encompass all the complexity of modern enterprises.

Verna Allee is the founder of Integral Performance Group, a consulting practice in California that specializes in the learning organization, knowledge competencies, organizational systems change, systems thinking, total quality and learning, benchmarking support, best practices research, and strategic development. She holds a degree in the Study of Human Consciousness and her work is informed by a deep interest in intelligence, human development, cognition, intuition and consciousness. 4 out of 5 stars A good book for leaders of knowledge-rich organizations........1999-05-08

It should come as no surprise that without knowledge, systems fail. In The Knowledge Evolution, Verna Allee focuses on an analysis of the role knowledge plays in contributing to the success of an organization. According to Allee, knowledge becomes of greater and greater importance as the validity and strength of an organization is called into question. Without a doubt, the availability of a strong knowledge base has, in many corporations, played a fundamental role in the company's survival.

Presently, workers at numerous companies are struggling with the concept of how knowledge becomes a driving influence within their organization. Because it is intangible and hard to grasp a common understanding of what organizational knowledge is, leaders are finding it hard to capture, organize, and use knowledge as a tool. Verna attempts to establish a frame-work which lends itself to this understanding and provides today's corporate leaders with the tools to better make decisions regarding organizational knowledge.

Allee provides a general understanding of how advancements in technology define corporate culture and how learning is effected by the widespread use of available technologies. Community relationships are also influenced by technology and leaders are being forced to rethink how organizations are structured and how knowledge is used to influence decision-making processes.

Current conditions indicate that the future of companies -- how well prepared they will be to compete in the global economy -- will be determined by how well they understand and use knowledge. Allee provides a management road-map to get companies where they want to be regarding knowledge.

Like it or not, the Knowledge Evolution is upon us. Allee identified some effective ways organizations should create, adapt and apply knowledge. This book is essential reading for leaders who want to win!

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, introductory text........1999-05-03

At times, The Knowledge Evolution delved too much into semantics and ontology, in an attempt to develop a "common language". At the time of publication (1997) this may have been relevant but the prevalence of "knowledge management glossaries" reveals that indeed a common language has emerged, making this specific content a bit of an arduous read. Perhaps a second edition is needed, especially since the proprietary value of this book is still not being addressed in current knowledge management (KM) literature. Current KM books almost exclusively focus on data, information and knowledge (DIK). The Knowledge Evolution visions past DIK and adds complex dimensions of meaning, wisdom and philosophy to the knowledge framework.

If you do purchase this selection, I recommend writing unabashedly in the margins, or keeping a notebook on hand, connecting the theoretical constructs of knowledge and it's management discussed in the book to a personal context. By and large the scope of the book is very broad, looking inclusively at the field of KM. Since the writing of this book, specific sub-fields within KM have emerged i.e. data mining, group memory technologies, knowledge mapping etc. A reorganization of the content in this book along those lines (i.e. "procedural knowledge" with data mining, "functional knowledge" with knowledge mapping) was a worthwhile endeavor of this reader and would be a tremendous value-add to a second edition.

By and large The Knowledge Evolution is a readable and comprehensive introductory text to the field of KM. The book is broad and encompasses so much of the theory and principles behind KM that the actual industry has yet achieve or implement everything discussed. With the enormous influx and popularity of KM books in the past two years I hadn't heard anything about The Knowledge Evolution and now having read it, I realize the book that all these current authors must have also read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Framework for building and creating knowledge........1999-04-03

An excellent treatment of the subject matter. Provided insigts on knowledge learning and performance. Prepares us for the knowledge era, where knowledge is king. I wish she had included some material on creativity, having knowledge is nice but being creative is better.

5 out of 5 stars A penetrating look at the knowledge-organization connection........1999-02-14

Taking an organic systems view, the author explores how organizations acquire, manage, and transfer knowledge. Covers: the nature, role and order of knowledge; best practices; types of organizational structures that support knowledge sharing; technologies for knowledge building; developing knowledge strategies; and efforts to measure results. An very impressive gathering and integration of ideas about organization in the Knowledge Era. A first-rate book on a cutting-edge subject.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive integration of theory, innovation & practicality!.......1999-01-23

Verna quickly brings us all up to speedon the field of knowledge. As she reviews it, she compares and contrasts the current working theories and then integrates them into a working template that links knowledge, learning and performance. This template/model allows us to quickly apply the information to the organizations in which we live or to which we consult. She presents a developmental process for the different levels of knowledge that compares in scholarship and in practical use with Piaget's developmental intelligence, and Kolbergs developmental morality. She then follows up with 6 practical chapters where she more fully explores each level, helping us all to identify where our organization is, where it should be, and some methods to use to get us where we need to be. She writes in an exciting, clear and creative style giving us the basis for understanding more thoroughly what has gone before (giving consistent credit to the many minds that have worked in this field), what links knowledge management does and should have with other crucial systemic concepts such as systems thinking, organization learning, and organizational sustainability, and including us in the innovative ideas that occurred to her as she was doing such scholarly research. The bibliography and references are worth the price of admission themselves.

      Book Description

The HIV epidemic has spawned a scientific effort unprecedented in the history of infectious disease research. This effort has merged aspects of clinical research, basic molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, and mathematical biology in ways that have not been seen before. In The Evolution of HIV Keith A. Crandall brings together researchers from these disciplines to present perspectives on both the molecular biology and molecular evolution of HIV.

The book is organized into three sections: "Introduction to HIV" explores the fundamentals of the virus's molecular biology and its global diversity. "Molecular Methods for Studying HIV Diversity" looks at such topics as HIV phylogenetics, modeling the molecular evolution of HIV sequences, the use of phylogenetic inference to test an HIV transmission hypothesis, and coalescent approaches to HIV population genetics. The third section,"Case Studies of HIV Evolution" examines the levels of diversity within and among host individuals, the phylogenetics of known transmission histories, and HIV evolution and disease progression via longitudinal studies.

The book will be of interest to researchers and clinicians working on HIV, as well as scientists studying molecular evolution, population genetics, and evolutionary biology. Book Description

Despite enormous efforts, over 100,000 papers and over $22 billion spent by the US taxpayer alone, the HIV-AIDS hypothesis has failed to produce any public health benefits, no vaccine, no effective drug, no prevention, no cure, not a single life saved. Is the science system to be blamed? Has science failed to reveal the truth about AIDS? In AIDS: Virus or Drug Induced?, two dozen scientists, scholars and journalists have investigated the status quo of AIDS research. Most of them have questioned the HIV-AIDS hypothesis before, but have since been censored, and sociologically excluded from AIDS research, politics and journalism. Here they are united for the first time to put on trial the HIV-AIDS hypothesis. There are those who acquit HIV entirely. Others who make a case for HIV as a necessary, but not a sufficient cause of AIDS. And one medical scientist who, together with the huge AIDS literature, defends the hypothesis that HIV is sufficient to cause AIDS. The book convincingly reveals that the scientific method could very well find a solution to AIDS, but only if ideas can be exchanged freely and if the HIV monopoly can be broken. AIDS: Virus or Drug Induced? illustrates that the solution to AIDS could be as close as one of several, very testable and very affordable alternatives to the unproductive HIV-AIDS hypothesis.

      1 out of 5 stars A terrible book.......2007-01-03

This book is wrong. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that AIDS is late stage HIV. To believe otherwise is to be confused by semantics. This confusion has cost so much to countries like South Africa. Please don't buy this irresponsible and misleading book.

5 out of 5 stars very important- highly recommend!.......2002-12-17

People believe the HIV-AIDS hypothesis only because they are not being shown the whole picture - and because the status quo has endured for so long. Its endurance is not due to its merits - people are working very hard at maintaining it's prominence. Most would not even suspect the extent of what has been and continues to be hidden from the general public. This subject is enormous - and extremely important. These books ,and the www, are currently the only way for informed insiders- top scientists + nobel laureattes - to warn the public about the serious failings of the HIV hypothesis + the all too human characteritics of those we trust with our lives. Informing oneself about this subject could prove priceless - whether personally affected by AIDS or not. See Peter Duesbergs site, Virusmyth, Rethinkingaids, Reclaimthebrain for more.
I would urge everyone to read this book , and all of Duesbergs work especially "Inventing the AIDS Virus". It really could be the most important book you ever read...

5 out of 5 stars HIV/AIDS theory full of holes.......2001-09-13

A nice collection of papers detailing alternative theories to the current HIV/AIDS hypothesis. Despite the apparent universal accepted HIV/AIDS model, there are plenty of evidence against HIV being the etiology of AIDS.
Can we afford to be wrong about AIDS causation especially since the currently available treatment for AIDS is a whole series of extremely toxic substances with questionable effectiveness?
And since when do legitimate alternative theories about a disease have to be totally suppressed?
And why was "reader"(one of the reviewers of this book) so vehement in his attack against Duesberg?
It seemed from his comments that he hadn't read a single paragraph from any of Duesberg's books or papers before? Maybe it's his failure to understand the logic of serious scientific arguments!? Has he read Duesberg curriculum vitae?

I highly recommend this book for anything in search of the truth behind the tragic collection of diseases under the name AIDS!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Prunella! Cut the hyperbole!.......2001-08-13

Please ignore the other review of this book. The author of that review abuses very nearly every rhetorical device known to man, when not outright lying.

The issue of AIDS and its origin is too important for people to blindly trust received wisdom. After all, this could be *your* health we're talking about here. Please read everything you can get your hands on with an open mind. Constantly ask questions. Decide for yourself whether or not the AIDS rethinkers raise valid questions/points.

1 out of 5 stars Awful irresponsible quack.......2000-08-24

Despite the fact that this issue was resolved years ago in the scientific arena, this man continues to insist that AIDS-related illnesses are the exclusive result of such factors as malnutrition, poverty, and illicit drug use (i.e., not HIV). In his view, people with HIV positive antibody tests die because they take antiretroviral drugs.

This is absolutely ridiculous since thousands of studies around the world have proved that antiretroviral drugs extend people's lives--in fact death rates are down 60% in countries where these drugs exist and deaths are climbing in places--like Africa and Asia where there are little or no medications.

Duesberg does not prove anything in this book and, in fact, he should probably be brought to court as an accessory to murder since some unsuspecting people are being misinformed with significant and potentially tragic real-life results. Duesberg is completely wrong -- HIV IS transmitted sexually and this has been proven millions of times. This has been absolutely proven --whether in married couples where one is positive and one negative, or in young people who have taken sexual risks. Duesberg is not only wrong but amazingly irresponsible to be disseminating his nonsense, since misinformation adds a level of confusion that is deadly at worst. Neither Duesberg nor his followers conduct medical research nor take care of patients, but instead simply debate and try to look credible.

There is overwhelming evidence that HIV causes AIDS. Every country in the world -- except for developing countries like South Africa (who don't have the money to pay for anti-biotics let alone anti-HIV meds)-- believe that HIV causes AIDS (and if you can imagine, they don't all agree on things). And all Western countries are parting with hard-earned money to pay for these medications that are SAVING so many lives. You cannot trick all these people.

Duesberg is as alone in his ridiculous theory as Hitler was in claiming that Aryans are a superior race or other so-called "scientists" who claimed that the earth was flat. And there were lots of those, for many years after the earth was proven to be round.

If you are HIV positive and want to survive this pandemic DO NOT believe this man who HAS NEVER TREATED ONE PATIENT. IF you are negative, DO NOT believe this man or you will become positive if you take risks (sharing needles or having unprotected sex). If you need to read this book, just remember that every single infectious disease specialist--all HIV specialists -- around the world think that Duesberg is a dangerous quack.

          Description:
The CCR5-@D32 allele crucially determines the course of HIV infection and appears to be highly protective against the disease. Population genetic studies suggest that the allele has been under positive selection in Europe in the past. In a recent paper, Alison Galvani and Montgomery Slatkin collate the available evidence and use a mathematical model to strongly suggest that smallpox could have exerted sufficient selection pressure to explain the distribution of the allele across Europe. This is a beautiful example of the power of mathematical models in evolutionary genetics.

From the supplier: Antibiotic resistance is growing in more than 20 different kinds of bacteria. A primary example is tuberculosis bacillus which has developed resistance against more than 100 antibiotics. In Russia, a new multidrug-resistant TV known as MDR-TB is considered an incipient epidemic with the government receiving emergency international aid amounting to $100 million. The nonbacterial pathogen that causes malaria is another example wherein local strains in Thailand have shown much resistance. The resistant strains of HIV virus are found in industrialized countries.
