Book Description

Every working day in the United States, 90,000 jobs disappear--and an equal number are created. This discovery has radically altered the way economists think about how labor markets work. Without this necessary phenomenon of "creative destruction," our economies would experience much lower growth. Unemployment is a natural consequence of a vigorous economy--and is in fact indispensable to it. In The Natural Survival of Work, labor economists Pierre Cahuc and André Zylberberg consider how to manage the unemployment that results from the desirable churning of the economy, drawing on recent economic research and citing examples from France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

Unemployment in many continental European countries, particularly among youth, has reached high levels in recent years, and Cahuc and Zylberberg criticize labor market policies that are based on politics rather than economics. They discuss the minimum wage in both the United States and France and show that increasing it, under certain circumstances, can increase employment. They find fault with the idea that work sharing is a cure for unemployment. They consider how to design a system of unemployment insurance that does not destroy the incentive to find work, and examine the effect of government regulation of layoffs. Finally, they analyze the true impact of education and training as remedies for unemployment. Economists today know more about how labor markets work. Policies could be more effective, Cahuc and Zylberberg argue, if they were based upon this knowledge.

The French edition of The Natural Survival of Work won the 2004 European Economics Book Award.

    Book Description

Job Creation and Destruction is the culmination of a long, ongoing research program at the Center for Economic Studies. Using the most complete plant- level data source currently available--the Longitudinal Research Data constructed by the Census Bureau--it focuses on the U.S. manufacturing sector from 1972 to 1988 and develops a statistical portrait of the microeconomic adjustments to the many economic events that affect businesses and workers. The picture that emerges is one of large, persistent, and highly concentrated gross job flows, with job destruction dominating the cyclical feaures of net job flows.

The authors describe in detail those characteristics that destroy and create jobs over time (including industry of origin, wage payments, international trade exposure, factor intensity, size, age, and productivity performance), while also providing a broader measure of the process that will be directly relevant to macroeconomists and policymakers.

          Book Description

When job loss occurs in the U.S. labor market - particularly in the manufacturing sector - international competition invariably receives the brunt of the blame. Jobs, it seems, are being siphoned off overseas as a result of free trade agreements with nations that have eager, low-wage workforces. In fact, say the book's authors, this is only part of the story. At the same time jobs are being lost, other jobs are being created. Therefore, a more nuanced view of the effects of international competition is called for in order to truly understand its effects on the U.S. job market. In Job Creation, Job Destruction, and International Competition, Michael W. Klein, Scott Schuh, and Robert K. Triest offer such a view by presenting a picture of how the effects of international trade on employment in U.S. manufacturing industries vary widely. They explore the labor-market dynamics and adjustment costs associated with international factors, particularly the way fluctuations in exchange rates, overseas economic activity, and the altering of trade restrictions contribute to churning-the simultaneous job creation among some firms and job destruction among others. This effort produces insights that go beyond economy-wide or even sector-wide analyses of the effects of free trade. The documentation of the disparate effects between and even within narrowly defined industries shows that churning characterizes the labor markets for manufacturing industries, and that changes in international factors have a much larger and more complex impact on labor markets than was previously thought.

"For any size of total employment change induced by changes in international factors, the changes in individual jobs at individual establishments are much greater. Many more jobs are destroyed, but many more jobs also are created, than is apparent from the change in total employment. In fact, even when changes in international factors seem to have no effect on total employment at all, these changes are linked to greater job creation and destruction." By documenting the impact of international factors on employment across and within manufacturing industries in the United States, and by pointing out the ineffectiveness of simplistic policies intended to ameliorate the impact of globalization, this book serves as the first step toward building a base of knowledge that should improve our understanding of, and policies toward, the effects of international competition on labor markets.

From the author: We find that newly established private firms or de novo firms are fundamentally the most dynamic ones in terms of job creation. We estimate a reduced labour demand equation controlling for ownership and competitive pressure and find that the estimated employment elasticity with respect to real sales is rather low, 12%. We do not find any difference in this elasticity if we split the sample in expanding versus contracting firms. Furthermore we cannot find evidence that competitive pressure has any impact on the demand for labour. We do find that de novo firms have a higher employment growth than traditional firms.

              Description:
This paper analyzes how job creation and job destruction affected voting in the Polish 1997 and 2001 parliamentary elections. We link the votes for the left-wing party to the unemployment rate and the job creation and destruction rates in a constituency, and show that the job destruction rate and unemployment rate had a positive effect on the votes for the SLD, while the job creation rate had a negative effect. We then look at the effect of the change in job creation and job destruction rates on the change in the votes for individual candidates. We find that incumbents from the former right-wing coalition received fewer votes if excess job reallocation had increased in their constituency. Job flows therefore significantly affected voting and the balance between positive and negative effects of reforms to a large extent determined the political outcome.

                      Book Description

"The West is so cluttered with misconceptions that it is hard to have a serious discussion about its history." - Wallace Stegne.

For most Americans, the "Wild West" popularized in movies and pulp novels - a land of intrepid traders and explorers, warlike natives, and trigger-happy gunslingers - has become the true history of the region. The story of the West's development is a singular chapter of history, but not, according to former Secretary of the Interior and native westerner Stewart L. Udall, for the reasons filmmakers and novelists would have us believe.

In The Forgotten Founders, Udall draws on extensive research and his vast knowledge of and experience in the American West to make a compelling case that the key players in western settlement were the sturdy families who travelled great distances across forbidding terrain to establish communities there. He offers an illuminating and wide-ranging overview of western history and those who have written about it, challenging conventional wisdom on subjects ranging from Manifest Destiny to the importance of Eastern capitalists to the role of religion in westward settlement.

Udall argues that the overblown and ahistorical emphasis on a "wild west" has warped our sense of the past. For the mythical Wild West, Udall substitutes a compelling description of an Old West, the West before the arrival of the railroads, which was the home place for those he calls the "wagon people," the men and women who came, camped, settled, and stayed. He offers a portrait of the West not as a government creation or a corporate colony or a Hollywood set for feckless gold seekers and gun fighters but as primarily a land where brave and hardy people came to make a new life with their families. From Native Americans to Franciscan friars to Mormon pioneers, these were the true settlers, whose goals, according to Udall were "amity not conquest; stability, not strife; conservation, not waste; restraint, not aggression.

The Forgotten Founders offers a provocative new look at one of the most important chapters of American history, rescuing the Old West and its pioneers from the margins of history where latter-day mythmakers have dumped them. For anyone interested in the authentic history of the American West, it is an important and exciting new work.

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful reference for the private woodland owner.......1998-10-24

Thom McEvoy, associate professor and extension forester at theUniversity of Vermont has written a very helpful reference for theprivate woodland owner. It deals not only with legal issues but also covers taxes, estate planning, management, surveying, ethics and current perspectives on sustainable forestry. It gives enough background and detail to clarify confusing legal concepts but not so much as to burden the reader. Throughout it carries a wonderful point of view: it is often wiser and more productive to solve issues without the law than to get adversarial. As a bonus the book has some very useful appendices which include lists of extention forestry specialists, attorneys general, an extensive glossary and suggested readings.

It has changed the practice of this woodland owner. I have become serious about estate planning. I am less threatened because I understand it better. I was also motivated to contact my lawyer about what I had thought were minor legal items. They were not. Thanks Thom McEvoy.

The book will remain a primary reference. A comfort and guide the next time I have a timber sale, hire a forester, buy or sell land or discuss boundaries with my neighbors.

                      Book Description

Owning and Managing Forests is both an accessible overview of the privileges, rights, and obligations that accompany forest ownership and a guidebook to help active forest owners and managers use laws to their advantage and avoid the pitfalls of expensive and exhausting litigation. The book is a revised, expanded, and updated edition of Legal Aspects of Owning and Managing Woodlands, published in 1998 by Island Press and named Best Forestry Book of the Year by the National Woodland Owners Association.

This edition provides current information on recent changes in property, environmental, and tax laws, while also discussing new directions in forest management. It offers expanded treatment of topics including private property, searching property records, easements, estate planning, timber sale contracts, working with forestry professionals, and how to pass woodlands intact to future generations. The book also describes the many different facets of trusts, changes in forestland taxation methods, and new licensing and certification options. Included, too, is a section on avoiding disputes and how to use alternative dispute resolution methods to avoid costly, troubling, and time-consuming court battles.

Owning and Managing Forests provides clear and concise descriptions of often confusing concepts and difficult subjects, and addresses issues in a competent yet conversational tone. Anyone involved with owning or managing forestland will find the book an essential guide and reference.

This book addresses the contractural matters of the timber business very well. I was very interested in the tax and trust portions and was very pleased with the fairly recent subject matter. Real world information with guidance of what to avoid and how to enter into the timber markets.

The title alone makes this book intriguing, doesn't it?

In the age-old tradition of using stories to disseminate essential truths, Dr. Gettis does a masterful job. Each lesson is a gem. Some may seem familiar, other less so; every one is worthwhile. You will find yourself captivated as you absorb the wisdom embedded in each story.

I have no hesitation in recommending Seven Times Down, Eight Times Up. Learning is never as effective as when you are enjoying the lessons - and here you have the wisdom of the ages.

It is little wonder that this volume was followed by the equally entertaining and well-written "The Happiness Solution."

I've heard it said that "there is no such thing as the truth, there are only stories". Alan Gettis Seven Times Down, Eight Times Up is a masterful collection of stories that points beautifully to the universal truths that surround us. His easy going style never gets in the way. The books loving paternal nature delivers lessons that can be read over and over again, gleaning new insights with each re-reading. It is the kind of book you like to leave around the house for a quick spiritual boost. Each of the stories stands like a sparkling gem through which the truth is magnified and humanized. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves learning in its most powerful form, through story.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and inspiring.......2003-12-22

I enjoyed Dr. Gettis' easy-going style and his varied contexts (sports, Zen, driving, family, health) for his stories. Each is fused with Eastern thought and Western psychology and is told in such an uncomplicated and thought-proviking manner that my insights are immediate and inspiring.
                      Keep this book close.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Times Down Eight Times Up.......2003-12-22

Dr. Gettis writes a simple read packed with wisdom and good old fashion common sense for a happy life. His stories are a wonderful cross of Chicken Soup for the Soul and What I Learned I Learned in Kindergarten. They are spiced with concepts common to western thought such as those espoused by Albert Ellis and eastern spiritual ideas of Buddha and Zen thought. Maybe even a little Obi Wan Kanobi and Yoda tossed in for good measure. If you want to face life's ups and downs with a fresh way of thinking then read this book!

5 out of 5 stars "Read this book!".......2003-12-19

This book contains numerous nuggets of wisdom. Dr. Gettis captures the essence of what it takes to live a happy, spiritually fulfilled life. Anyone who follows the advice given so gently here will be much more at peace. If enough people read this book, the world will be greatly benefitted. Read this book!"

I picked up this book at the local drug store thinking this would be a fluff piece. But for $5 bucks I got more than I could ever have bargained for. Its easy to read, you can pick and choose chapters that you wish to look at. And there is also a section for you to write down your specific goals and so forth. I learned so much about my habits from a secular and spiritual point of view. A book you'll want to pass around.

                                  Book Description

In Hormonal Chaos, Sheldon Krimsky traces the emergence of an unorthodox hypothesis that casts new suspicions on a broad range of modern industrial chemicals. At the heart of his story is the "Environmental Endocrine Hypothesis," the assertion that a class of chemicals called "endocrine disruptors" are interfering with the normal functioning of hormones in animals and humans. Krimsky describes how this controversial theory was first elaborated and explores the complex factors that have contributed to its increased legitimacy and continued controversy.

                                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hormonal Chaos: Environmental Endocrine Hypothesis.......2000-06-19

This is not a book for environmentalists, only. Those who are pregnant or those who want healthy grandchildren will especially want to read Hormonal Chaos by Sheldon Krimsky. Every person who bought Mary Shomons' or Dr. Sanford Siegals' new books on thyroid failure should be interested in this book on the Environmental Endocrine Hypothesis. Synthetic thyroid is one of the most prescribed medications in the world. Thyroid disease is on the rise. Any person who ever faced infertility, prostate cancer or most cancer for that matter, reduced cognitive function, congestive heart failure, diabetes or immune dysfunction in themselves or someone they love must read Hormonal Chaos. Endocrine failure is involved in all of the above; furthermore, environmental endocrine disrupters may be the trigger that sets off a cascade of disease which results in "ambiguous sexual development" or fewer males. Krimsky has a very important message.

Sheldon Krimsky has written a readable, persuasive, informative and timely book. This is not a quick read but an engrossing read. Sheldon has proven a link between environmental toxins and endocrine disease. He offers not only a credible theory for endocrine failure through environmental toxins but documents it with scientifically sound data. Krimsky says, "It is usually in books, not in peer-reviewed journals, that one finds bold synthetic ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries." Sheldon Krimsky has crossed those boundaries; he is one of those courageous individuals who takes us to the next paradigm at perhaps his own peril.

Could the trigger that unleashes endocrine imbalance and failure be estrogenic hormonal modulators? Is it possible that with or even without a genetic glitch an environmental trigger could mean hormonal chaos? Could it be that endocrine disrupters such as chemicals combine with modern stress, polluted water and food to disrupt the metabolic pathway to produce the most prevalent and virulent diseases that plague our lives, even result in dual sexual organs. Krimsky has made a solid case for such an environmental endocrine hypothesis. I highly recommend Hormonal Chaos.
