Book Description

As the phenomenon of globalization continues to spark dynamic and controversial debates, managerial agendas around the world are being shaped. Businesses are pressed to respond to the challenges of globalizing competitors. They must enhance profits and generate returns for investors and do so by entering global markets, competing against international rivals, and finding opportunities in a continuously transforming world. Companies are expected to achieve these goals in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Extraordinary opportunities exist for those who can effectively answer the need to globalize, yet it is a complex enterprise with many associated risks. Renowned experts for the INSEAD-Wharton Alliance, Hubert Gatignon and John Kimberly, have collaborated to edit a non-partisan and comprehensive book that looks beyond the broad issues and focuses on the managers' response to the opportunities and challenges of larger, global markets. Relevant and timely as the outspoken debates about globalization continue, the contributors to this volume discuss crucial implications for managers, policy makers and non-governmental organizations.

4 out of 5 stars Experts Concur: Get Ready to be Global.......2005-11-23

This book is the product of the alliance between the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and INSEAD, a prestigious business school outside Paris, with a campus in Singapore. INSEAD's Web site explains the book's parentage: "The INSEAD-Wharton Alliance, announced in May 2001, combines INSEAD's resources with those of Wharton's campuses in Philadelphia and San Francisco, to deliver business education and research across a global learning network." This book, featuring essays by members of both faculties from a variety of business disciplines, makes the alliance tangible to the rest of us. It examines the issues driving business to globalize and the challenges confronting the managers of globalizing businesses. We acknowledge this book as a milestone in the unified academic treatment of global business. Business scholars and corporate trainers may find the collaboration compelling, and readers seeking academic discussion of management theory will certainly find the essays stimulating. Yet, as can happen with academic anthologies, the filtration is spotty: Here, the irrelevant or oblique appears side by side with the new and applicable, and many essays are dryly academic in style, tone and content. As one wag said of novelist Henry James, the problem is not that they bite off more than they can chew, but rather that they chew more than they can bite off.

    Book Description

Organizational Transformation and Process Engineering is the key to achieving success in the new customer-driven market economy. Organizations are going through tremendous changes, creating environments where all employees can contribute their best, where customer expectations are exceeded, and where efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, and competitiveness are taken seriously as critical success factors. Written to assist those companies and organizations striving to keep pace with the competitive atmosphere of the 90s, this book provides all the essential tools, techniques, methodologies, models, and technologies for transformation and reengineering. Broad and comprehensive in scope, Organizational Transformation and Process Reengineering explains how to change not just one area, but structures, policies, procedures, processes, and management systems-any aspect of an organizational structure that no longer responds to the current demands of the marketplace. Years of research, teaching, consulting, and practical work experience led Dr. Edosomwan, a leader in his field, to put his unique and practical theories into a volume designed to help organizations overcome the impediments involved in process reengineering projects. He outlines a step-by-step methodology for analyzing organizational structures; the six R's of organizational transformation; models that can be utilized in both public and private organizations; tools and techniques for achieving reengineering goals; implementation plans; and key survival and success factors.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Self Gratifying.......1999-03-19

All in all, this book is what you would expect from a reengineering book. However, the fact that the author, Dr. Edosomwan, keeps on quoting himself and referring to the techniques he invented has the "Edosomwan" techniques and practices brings a strange taste to the reeder's mouth. Indeed, it sounds a bit self-gratifying to keep on quoting one self. It sounds more like a "do what I do because I do it right" book than anything else. In all fairness however, Dr. Edomsowan does know what he's talking about and this book is of great interest. I would recommend it for reeders wanting to know more about reengineering rather than to consultants looking for tools and techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Field Manual.......2001-02-21

Keys to Soil Taxonomy is an excellent field manual for identifying soil groups and strata. I will warn you however, that the terminology can be somewhat confusing without a good natural science glossary. This especially applies to individuals without degrees in soil science.

This guide is fairly clear about how to combine terms to form appropriate soil labels. It is also excellent for providing a basic (or complex) understanding of soil formation and variants within soil groups.

5 out of 5 stars Key to Soil Taxonomy.......2000-04-27

This book is use for the field classification of soil in the earth. The soil taxonomy is one of the important soil classification systems which has been developed by USDA. It is as popular as FAO legend. However, soil taxonomy is giving very detail description of soil. By reading the name we just not only know about the the soil type, but also the properties of it.

This book is very good handbook not only for the young scientist who start to learn about the soil, but also for the teacher to review their knowledge about the properties and classification of different soils in the world.

                        Book Description

This new, completely revised and updated edition provides a synthesis of the forces that shaped the evolution of the human growth pattern, the biocultural factors that direct its expression, the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that regulate individual development, and the biomathematical approaches that are needed to analyze and interpret human growth. After covering the history, philosophy, and basic biological principles of human development, the book turns to the evolution of the human life cycle. Later chapters explore the physiological, environmental, and cultural reasons for population variation in growth, and the genetic and endocrine factors that regulate individual development, providing a comprehensive explanation for the functional and adaptive significance of human growth patterns. The final chapter integrates all this information into a truly interactive biocultural model of human development.

5 out of 5 stars good reference on human growth.......2000-06-06

Bogin presents a good, up-to-date overview of human growth that may interest clinicians, anthropologists and human biologists. This work emphasizes a life history perspective, using life stages (e.g. adolescence) as organizing themes. It is also sensitive to the interplay of human growth with sociocultural factors, such as the role of socioeconomic status in growth in a range of societies. Certain contexts in which the study of growth is situated--in comparison with living apes, in light of the human fossil record, in cross-cultural perspective--may appeal to some readers' tastes more than others, but together underpin an admirable synthesis. A few wrinkles could be ironed out, such as a bias toward championing the importance of adolescence; also, some oversimplifications (e.g. the author's statement that hormones are proteins) are too oversimplified. The well-chosen perspectives, clear exposition and extensive list of references cited make this volume suitable to many readers interested in the study of human growth.

                          Book Description

This study enhances the existing measures of the nation's human capital and the extent to which that capital is utilized. Haveman, Bershadker, and Schwabish develop an indicator of the value of the human capital stock held by the nation's working-age population called Earnings Capacity (EC), and use it to study the time trends in aggregate human capital in the United States and human capital per worker. They also use EC to evaluate utilization of the nation's human capital stock, thereby demonstrating the usefulness of the EC indicator in measuring the size and strength of the U.S. economy.

The authors then explore these patterns for the entire working-age population as well as for at-risk subgroups distinguished by race, schooling, and age in order to highlight the social and public policy relevance of the EC indicator.

Overall, their empirical results provide insights into the performance of the U.S. economy over the past three decades, and they serve to supplement other analyses of this performance.

The completely revised and updated New Edition of this definitive textnow in full color! Long known as the source to consult for guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, plan management, and genetic counseling, this easy-to-use reference focuses on the patterns of human defects caused by inborn errors in morphogenesis as opposed to defects caused by mechanical problems. It provides a wealth of information on normal and abnormal morphogenesis * minor anomalies and their relevance * clinical approaches to specific diagnoses * and normal standards of measurement for the entire spectrum of disorders. Each chapter includes a description of the specific abnormalityincluding occasional associated abnormalitiesnatural history, etiology, and references. On opposing pages are several descriptive photographs and line drawings of either an individual with the abnormality or specific features of the abnormality.

Nice guidebook to have to help you study cases of human malformation. Each syndrome comes with text information and corresponding pictures. The pictures help you relate a particular syndrome with actual patients. It also has an index which shows some of the more common dysmorphic features that you may see and lists the syndromes that usually present with these features. The only drawback is that the information about some syndromes are sometimes lacking, so you will need another reference to expound on these cases.

Smith's Recognizable Patterns Of Human Malformation has always been one of the best textbooks for those health professionals who study and work on diagnosis or research in dismorphology, mainly pediatricians, pathologists and geneticists. Its 6th edition is 100% improved regarding illustrations, with nice color pictures as well as updated references and new concepts. Indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have reference for pediatricians.......2007-07-23

This is a totally new book. I purchased the fourth edition about 15 years ago. A long way has elapsed for medicine, pediatrics and genetics. This new edition incorporated all the new advances in the field of molecular genetics. Although the genetic syndromes are explained in the classic form, with Abnormalities, Natural History and Etiology, the recent advances in genomic medicine are fully explained for each genetic syndrome or disease. Also the pictures are now in color, they have always been great pictures but now with the color they bring much more to clarity and teaching. I like very much this book, not only because the depth and comprehensive review but because it is indeed a perfect picture of what has changed in the last years, and indeed, it is a new world, particularly in the field of genetics.

                          Book Description

Being born is just the beginning; becoming a fully human being is not easy. It's a creative process of self-development toward which we have to work for the rest of our lives. How we live; how we think; how we react to our experiences; and who we wish to be, rather than who we are, all contribute to our humanness--or lack of it.

Despite the claims of popular "how-to" guides to becoming a better person, no book holds the magic key to true humanness or real happiness. It takes a lifetime of learning. In THE ART OF BECOMING HUMAN, Mary E. Mercer reflects with great insight and empathy on the happiness and difficulties we encounter at each stage of life, pointing out that all growth requires separation from previous attachments. As we move from infancy to old age, the pain of each separation lifts us to a higher level of awareness of ourselves. This pattern of love and separation repeats itself throughout our lives until, if we're fortunate, our desire to be loved becomes a desire to love. Dr. Mercer explains what is required for personal growth, details the aspects of life that touch us profoundly, and lays out the choices that can lead to the highest state of humanness possible.

THE ART OF BECOMING HUMAN considers not only the common experiences of human growth from birth to old age, but also the profound influences that inborn talent, chance, necessity, and hope play in our development. Using eloquent quotations from literary classics, Dr. Mercer reveals the universal self-creative pattern that lies beneath the surface of individual life.

I am giving this 2 stars simply because as far as writing goes, it's not bad. However, it's not bad for an undergraduate psychology student's term paper. Many of the "artistic quotes" from the likes of Goethe, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf seem to fit the author's particular point in a very contrived sort of way. Removing great pieces of literature from their original context to support her own writing does nothing to enhance either one. I found myself skipping the quotes which, I know, went against what the author wanted in the first place. Unfortunately, that leaves a very basic, intro to psychology outline of a book, and I found it very difficult to get past the first few chapters. For example, hasn't the body of psychology moved beyond the concept of "penis envy" which Mercer mentions as if it is a broadly accepted and experienced cognitive step. I gave two stars rather than one simply because I didn't finish reading it and, in fairness, perhaps there is something good contained within it that I am missing.

Dr. Mercer write extraordinarily well about how we all try to answer the "big question" of why we are here though our individual evolutions. Its not a "self-help" book but a meditation based in psychiatry, pediatrics and adult medicine of the mind and the ages of man; quotes from great artists and thinkers are used as illustrations, showing us how the more eloquent among us have pondered these fundemental issues thoughout. Its so well written, and a beautifully and artfully thought-out reflection of how a person develops patterns that shape him or can be recognized where need be to reconstruct how he interprets, and so lives, his life. Really great.

Assuming that the earliest human ancestors grew more like apes than current-day humans, when, how and why did our modern growth pattern evolve? Covering growth patterns within available Plio-Pleistocene Hominids, including juvenile fossil specimens, and individuals assigned to the newest species, Homo antecessor, this book provides a rich data source for anthropologists and evolutionary biologists exploring these questions.

It is generally accepted that the earliest human ancestors grew more like apes than like humans today. If they did so, and we are now different, when, how and why did our modern growth patterns evolve? This book focuses on species within the genus Homo to investigate the evolutionary origins of characteristic human patterns and rates of craniofacial and postcranial growth and development, and to explore unique ontogenetic patterns within each fossil species. Experts examine growth patterns found within available Plio-Pleistocene hominid samples, and analyse variation in ontogenetic patterns and rates of development in recent modern humans in order to provide a comparative context for fossil hominid studies. Presenting studies of some of the newest juvenile fossil specimens and information on Homo antecessor, the newest species assigned to the genus, this book will provide a rich data source with which anthropologists and evolutionary biologists can address the questions posed above.
