This book is a must-read for anyone involved in mergers and acquisitions in the cable or media industries, a should read for people doing M&A in other industries and a worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in business and investing. The author sat at the deal-making table with some of the best negotiators in the media and communications industries. His general advice about negotiating strategy and tactics is quite familiar, but he brings a unique insight into the motivations and manipulations of CEOs and investment bankers. Academics have long puzzled over why CEOs implement value-destroying M&A deals. Here's a first-hand, eyewitness account of how these big deals come to be. Even if you have little faith in the astuteness of executives, the author's revelations will surprise you. Just when you thought nobody could be that stupid, here comes an anecdote about another boardroom leader who was. The detail, it must be said, gets exhaustive at times, but if you love deals, we think that you'll be too absorbed to care.
An inadvertently funny read.......2004-03-10
I bought this book because of a favorable mention in The Economist. I am truly astonished, and am rethinking my Economist subscription.
All tell-all war-story business books are self serving. Never, however, has one been so shamelessly and ineptly so. The book is an astonishingly collection of self-aggrandizement, payback, groveling, condescension, and Monday morning quarterbacking. Hindery portrays himself as the lone genius at the center of each deal, his wisdom all too often ignored, but always correct. People who have fired him or otherwise crossed him (e.g. Mike Armstrong of AT&T, Steve Rattner of Quadrangle, some poor WSJ reporter) are fools or knaves. The people to whom he now owes fealty (George Steinbrenner, Brian Roberts) are repeatedly bootlicked for their genius.
There's not a lot of wisdom for the ages here, either. The first chapter is the give-away. Written in 2002, he praises Gerry Levin at AOL-TW as a visionary, and criticizes the severe stumbles of Amazon and Yahoo!. Oops.
The book suffers from some sort of strange editing Alzheimer's. The same comments appear again and again in the same chapter, often in the same words, as if Hindery and his ghost-writer can't remember what he said 5 minutes before.
After a while, this all becomes very amusing, and it should be read in that vein.
Insomnia Cure.......2003-09-24
If you enjoy war stories on mega deals within the media industry, this one is for you. The author enjoys telling the tale, and you should fill your coffee cup or wine glass, and maybe light up a cigar for full reader ambience. Most of the material is less applicable to classroom or lecture hall, but rather the stuff discussed in country club locker rooms and men's-only grills.
As for strategies, tactics, and lessons applicable to deal making today, the author rarely wanders from the ten commandments of dealmaking listed on the book jacket. Applying the lessons to deals within privately held or small businesses is a stretch at best. I found myself skipping much of the material and heading directly to the end of the chapters. There you will find helpful sections starting with "Looking Back", that actually dissect and reflect on the deal being discussed.
My advise: Wait for the Cliff Notes to come out. Not worth wading through the book for the finely sprinkled parcels of wisdom applicable in most deal making.
The Biggest Game of All.......2003-07-20
I learned about this book watching Kudlow & Cramer interview the author. The war stories related are downright fascinating, especially the chapters covering TCI, AT&T and Comcast. Depending upon which side your on, some of the negotiations are not very pretty, but they led to closings. Mistakes were made, which are made crystal clear. But deals got done.
I wanted to know who the author considered "great dealmakers" and what they had done to be so named. Some are household names. He focused, however, on those in the Media World, where he has established himself.
The chapters on Mike Armstrong and Barry Diller are of special interest to me. I like the book and recommend it to those interested in learning from the inside how some major deals were done. In the end, that's what matters to change agents.
Give it a try, you'll like it.......2003-06-13
I bought this book because of the favorable review by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and The Economist. I found the book interesting on many levels and annoying on a few others. The main annoyance was with the general tone of the book. The first part of the book is a homage to many of the people that Hindery has known in the business. It almost sounds solicitous. However, the book recovers from this with a great treatment of how to do deals and insight into how some of the deals he was a part of transpired. I finished the reading of this book with the feeling that while some of the book was a waste, the book as a whole was not a waste of time. Therefore I rate it with 4 stars and encourage any aspiring dealmaker to go and negotiate a good price on the book and learn. The 10 rules for negotiating a deal are excellent.

This book goes more into the operation of an income producing llama farm than other books I've read on the subject. It covers not just daily care, but how to actually DO things with the animals to offset their care cost. Some of the data is a bit outdated, such as cost for good animals, but the underlying premises still hold true. If you've ever wondered "Why a llama?", here's where you can learn more.

so i finally finished your book. i loved it! i must tell you, not being used to reading biographies, i kept forgetting you were real people! the "trouble in paradise" chapter almost had me crying! based on the reading, it sounds like you two really were made for each other. the love between you two screams from the pages!

Two lucky people..........2007-05-29
...who have somehow found each other. That's what I kept saying to myself as I was reading this truly great book. It's very refreshing to see someone write about such a controversial subject with true enthusiasm and an engaging, entertaining style.
I have read other books on S&M and bondage, "the lifestyle", etc, but what makes this one stand out as truly different is that it's a REAL STORY about two real people falling in love and then continuing to do the work required to maintain the relationship.
I have been in long-term relationships with both men and women (and dabbled in the disciplinary arts a bit myself at various times) and although I don't share the same kinks as these two, I applaud Dollie's obvious love for her man and her fearless telling of their story. The index and community information in the back (and Thorndaddy's advice for the guys) was very cool also - a resource I have not noticed elsewhere.
I can't remember ever coming across a book on S&M that reads with such open honesty (and obvious FUN) before. Dollie L. is a truly gifted writer and I look forward to her next literary work.
Tough Love!.......2007-03-31
I can't say enough about this book. I couldn't put it down. I read it front to back the minute i got it. I laughed and cried at the cute, loving couple and her emotional journey. The thing about them is that they truly complete each other. She is genuinely happy to serve Him and He, in turn, loves to beat her "with love" as He says. if you've read this book, you definately NEED to go on iTunes and subscribe to their podcast "Submission and Coffee" and hear the way these Two speak to each other. They've been called the "Rob and Laura Petrie" of D/s and this is correct. After reading this, and listening to them, you will never think of "Bondage people" the same way again. They might be living right next to you! I am proud to call both of them friends, and hope to for a long time!
To be Young, Kinky, and in Love.......2006-11-13
I found this to be a warm, hot, silly, serious, smart, and honest depiction of one woman's fortune at finding her perfect (enought to her) mate and Master. Dollie has obviously got a brain and knows how to use it. No wimpy mealy mouth sub is she. But she finds her joy in giving herself and her power to her Thorndaddy. That is one of the bravest things a person can do, IMHO, and to find someone to accept and honor that giving, and to love and respect and control with grace is a rare and much hoped for thing in the BDSM world. Dollie found it, Dollie revels in it, and Dollie shares in this book so much that most would hide. Good, bad, smelly, kinky, perverse, whatever, it is a glimse into a world few see, and one even those in the lifestyle may not know. In a lot of ways, this is just like vanilla romance, only more fun.

I started this book three days ago right after I got it in the mail and would have finished it sooner had I not had to sleep and go to work!
Dollie portrays the submissive with accute accuracy and shows her as a smart, strong woman that can take her strength and give over to her Master. Not many women can do that and alot see it as weak.
I loved this book and am so glad I got the chance to read it.

spiritual direction through correspondence of a true spiritual master.......2007-01-09
This book provides an example of how to act as a spiritual director in a one-on-one situation through correspondence. The directee has made progress and is interested in how to proceed in the more advanced or deeper stages of the spiritual journey. The director, St. John of the Cross admits that he is trying to "explain things ultimately unexplainable." 2 The topic under discussion is about how to achieve union with God that is part of the purgation, illumination and transformation experience. Some of the language and terms that both writers used to describe their experience differ considerably from my own experience (such as our intellect "becomes a mind-divine" 50). I was very challenged by intimate experiences of God's love that Ana and St. John experienced. Speaking of God's love that one experiences in the deeper stages, John describes the intensity of it as unable to be contained by one's heart (2), as a "wound of love" that "is not distasteful but delightful" (35) , as the enjoyment of God that overflows "into every one of your faculties and senses." (39)
The most encouraging and yet sobering statement in the book was the following about what spiritual directors need not be: Not "highly educated but inexperienced, or one full of clever answers but indiscreet, not a listener but a controller, not a humble person but one proud of being so accomplished, not an experienced guide in spiritual matters but a counselor mainly trained in psychological techniques and personality analysis." 90

This Story was my favorite, once I got started I couldn't put it down. Very enjoyable read, as all the stories in this compilation! I recommend spending an afternoon reading these.
The best kind of book.......2002-01-06
I loved this book. All four stories take 4 women, strong and independent, and create a beautfuil romance for each. It's perfect for that Christan romantic, and just makes your heart jump. Doris English's story was so very touching, and Brenda Bancroft creats a very deep charecter. All 4 stories are worth reading again and again. They never lose that sparkle that makes you want to cry everytime the girl gets her guy.
Heart Warming.......2000-04-15
These wonderful short stories are great. My favorite was by Brenda Bancroft. The charactor had real flaws that endeared her to the readers. The plot was fanatatic, kept me so engrossed I could not put it down. This is just the book for those stressed out because it can be read in short intervals. I have enjoyed this collection of stories as much as the first two. If you really like this there are also a collection of historical short stories by the same publisher.

I love these 4 novels! I'm always going back to them. If you have never read them, you must do it as soon as you can. It is a perfect collection for the Christian who is a hopeless romantic. They're interesting, inspiring, romantic. Four great novels in one great book!

he retarded Soviet biology.......2005-06-05
Lysenko was responsible for retarding an entire generation of Soviet/Russian biology. Out the Soviet Union, his views were roundly discredited. But as Roll-Hansen explains, within the Soviet Union, he wielded great authority. Somehow, he got his theories in sync with the dialectic promulgated by the Communist Party. Any observational results that dissented from this were ignored. Or worse. Sometimes, biologists would find their careers destroyed.
The book is a good reminder of how unevenly the different sciences progressed in the Soviet Union. While some, like metallurgy, achieved world class status, biology suffered greatly.
