    5 out of 5 stars It Works!.......2004-11-18

This book combines over seven years of experience assisting individuals to become non-smokers with the cutting edge approaches of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to reprogram the brain for lasting success. Many individuals have been able to stop smoking with the methods described in this stop smoking guide. Even those who have smoked excessively for decades will be able to quit with the help of this stop smoking guide. The 7 Steps to Breaking the Habit are outlined in the following chapters:

    1. The Plan: How to set yourself up for success.
    2. Clean Up Your Language: How to use language patterns to delete the old smoking program, and create the new non-smoking behavior.
    3. Wild Dreams: How to use your imagination to never smoke again.
    4. One Last Look: How to recognize the traps that trigger the urge to smoke.
    5. New Day - New You: How to think, act, and live like a non-smoker.
    6. You Got It: How to avoid pitfalls, how to keep going, and how to celebrate your success of being a non-smoker.
    7. The Last Ingredients: Have faith, you can do it, and this chapter gives you a few more tools to never smoke again.

Inside the book you will find a free offer for an audio tape to assist you in your journey of becoming a non-smoker.

This book addresses the fears many individuals have when they consider to quit smoking - the worst fear is always that of 'losing a friend'. The reader will find suggestions of how to recognize the old smoking patterns, of how to implement new and healthier choices in every day life, and how to truly turn into a non-smoker instead of being an 'ex-smoker'.

The purpose of this book is outlined as follows:

If this book helps only one person to stop smoking -
If this book keeps only one person healthy -
If this book saves only one life -
Then this book has served its purpose!

      Book Description

What does a pack of cigarettes cost a smoker, the smoker's family, and society? This longitudinal study on the private and social costs of smoking calculates that the cost of smoking to a 24-year-old woman smoker is $86,000 over a lifetime; for a 24-year-old male smoker the cost is $183,000. The total social cost of smoking over a lifetime--including both private costs to the smoker and costs imposed on others (including second-hand smoke and costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security)--comes to $106,000 for a woman and $220,00 for a man. The cost per pack over a lifetime of smoking: almost $40.00. The first study to quantify the cost of smoking in this way, or in such depth, this accessible book not only adds a weapon to the arsenal of antismoking messages but also provides a framework for assessment that can be applied to other health behaviors. The findings on the effects of smoking on Medicare and Medicaid will be surprising and perhaps controversial, for the authors estimate the costs to be much lower than the damage awards being paid to 46 states as a result of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.

5 out of 5 stars Economics of smoking.......2007-05-17

Great book; The authors measure the cost of smoking, using a technique I had not seen before in the literature. They consider costs comparing smokers to nonsmoking smokers. The latter are persons with the same characteristics as smokers, but that do not smoke. It is a very exact way of measuring the costs of smoking. The book also measure quasi external costs of smoking; that is, costs born by nonsmoking family members of smokers. It is a must have for anyone interested in the economics of smoking or the costs of poor health habits.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-05-13

Wonderful for smokers wanting to know what the bad habit can do for you. Especially recommended!

From the author: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) poses an underappreciated risk to adolescent health. This study examined perceptions of adolescents (n = 574) regarding ETS. About one half (54%) were exposed to ETS the previous week, and one third (30%) were exposed to 3 or more hours of ETS the past week. Concurrently, 29% believed that breathing someone else's cigarette smoke had little or no effect on their health. Most adolescents (56%) believed that smoking should not be allowed in restaurants without bars but were less supportive of prohibiting smoking in restaurants with bars (20%) or in bars (14%). Two thirds (69%) of adolescents believed that the government should be involved in making laws that protect the health of people who work in bars and restaurants. Almost one half (49%) believed that the government should be involved in passing laws that make it illegal for people to smoke in public places. Odds ratios revealed that females, nonwhites, younger students, nonsmoking students, and students who believed that ETS exposure had a moderate or major effect on health were statistically significantly more likely to support clean indoor air ordinances in select locations compared to males, whites, older students, students who smoke, and students who perceived that ETS exposure has little to no effect on health.

              Description:
We estimate cigarette price and income elasticities for urban China, 1995. We find an overall cigarette price elasticity of 0.5, which lies between previous estimates. This implies that a 10% increase in price would result in a decline in cigarette consumption of 4.5 billion packs and would raise Y34 billion in additional tax revenue.

                Description:
The Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between the major tobacco companies and 46 states created an abrupt 20% increase in cigarette prices in November 1998. Earlier estimates of the elasticity of prenatal smoking implied that the price rise would reduce prenatal cigarette smoking by 7-20%. Using birth records on 9.8 million US births between January 1996 and February 2000, we examined the change in smoking during pregnancy and conditional smoking intensity in response to the MSA. Overall, adjusting for secular trends in smoking, prenatal smoking declined by less than half what was predicted in response to the MSA.

                      Book Description

The role of agriculture and its impact on Australia's relatively fragile environment is a continuing source of unresolved concern. In the past, agricultural producers and the environmental movement have adopted polarised views on how the Australian landscape should be managed.

Some environmentalists have perceived primary producers as exploiters of our natural resources while some farmers have viewed environmental groups as achieving legislative changes without regard to the need to earn a living from the land.

In recent times, however, considerable progress has been made. Research has provided a well-advanced understanding of environmental capability and it is no longer seen as acceptable for land managers to continue with practices that exacerbate land degradation. Most farmers desire reclamation and ultimate sustainability.

This book offers a definitive and positive contribution to the significance, responsibilities and accountabilities of agriculture and highlights the underpinning role of science in environmental issues.

Prepared for the Ninth Australian Agronomy Conference on 'Growing a Greener Future', the book provides an up-to-date account of the scientific knowledge of some major environmental problems facing farmlands. It also raises many contentious issues that need to be addressed.

Agriculture and the Environmental Imperative will make a positive contribution to the convergence of attitudes of farmers, environmentalists and government in the search for sustainability.

                            Book Description

This book is designed to help biologists who must create their own illustrations and artists who are confronted with unfamiliar biological subjects. The author, an experienced biological illustrator, gives practical instructions and advice on the consideration of size and of printing processes, choice of materials, methods for saving time and labor, drawing techniques, lettering methods, and mounting and packing the finished illustrations. She explains how to produce clear and attractive charts, graphs, and maps, so essential to science publications. Though this primer does not cover photographic techniques, it does include advice on retouching, cropping, and mounting photographs and on using photographs of biological subjects as aids in drawing. This second edition is updated to reflect the many technological changes in art materials and printing processes that have occurred since the book's first publication, and it includes an entirely new chapter on planning, designing, and mounting the poster presentations that have become an essential part of conferences held by scientific societies. Also included are the requirements and conventions peculiar to biological illustration and a bibliography of useful reference works.

"Every biology student who intends to write a thesis deserves to own this book, as does the biologist who intends to publish or work up some visual aids for his own use. There is no reason to limit the concepts of this handbook to the field of biology; it should be useful to other specific areas of science."—Evan Lindquist, American Biology Teacher (from a review of the first edition)

5 out of 5 stars This is a great place to begin!.......2000-03-28

With the internet, lots of people are beginning to design web pages... with no sense of art or style at all. Likewise for some people who use computers for illustrations. This handbook is indeed where everyone should begin if they're going to illustrate. It doesn't say much about computers, but it does show how to make professional illustrations using pre-computer tools -- which still set the standards. It's a most enjoyable book.
