5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text.......2000-03-28

I have used The Principles of Environmental Management - The Greening of Business - to prepare lectures for my course in Environmental Management. I found this book to be very well organized to meet the needs of students who wished to pursue a career in environmental management. The book is broken into three parts. Part One opens with the basic concepts and environmental issues that plaque us today. It examines among other things social responsibilities and environmental ethics. My favorite chapter in this part deals with the policy-making process. Part Two examines major environmental problems such as Global Warming, Ozone problems, Air Pollution, Water Pollution etc. The nice thing about the book is that it looks at the global aspect of environmental problems - Nice because we are now more interdependent than ever before. In this same part, Buchholz looks at Third World problems such as Deforestation and Species Decimation. Part Three of the book tries to advance some solutions to the environmental problems we face. Excellent, is the real life case studies which have been put at the end of the book. An excellent piece of work.

    Book Description

Traditional organizational structures are failing in a world of frantic change, instant communication and information overload. The truly effective business of the future will have to be responsive and flexible, yet this seems incompatible with the typical corporate hierarchy. Faced with a choice between management and leadership, innovation and reaction, centralization and fragmentation, most have opted for a weak compromise. DisOrganization offers an original alternative. Don't compromise. Go for both extremes at once. Have inspirational leadership, and manage the detail. React to your customers and innovate wildly. Break up your business into small units and have mechanisms in place to provide superb centralized communication. A DisOrganized company will be split into units of no more than fifty or a hundred, to all intents autonomous. These minicompanies will be coordinated by a netcompany, providing overall direction and the fast, effective communications needed to survive. The whole, a hypercompany, will comprise of a netcompany and a range of minicompanies, some of which are likely to be entirely independent. What were partners now become part of the hypercompany network. This structure combines the flexibility of small business with the power of the big players. Equipped with the weapons of clarity and direction, fun and empowerment, creativity and innovation, the new organizations will leave the old dinosaurs standing, wondering where the business went.

Human tissues often support large, complex microbial communities growing as biofilms that can cause a variety of infections. Due to an increased use of implanted medical devices, the incidence of these biofilm-associated diseases is increasing: the non-shedding surfaces of these devices provide ideal substrata for colonization by biofilm-forming microbes. The consequences of this mode of growth are far-reaching. As microbes in biofilms exhibit increased tolerance towards anti-microbial agents and decreased susceptibility to host defense systems, biofilm-associated diseases are becoming increasingly difficult to treat. Not surprisingly, therefore, interest in biofilms has increased dramatically in recent years. The application of new microscopic and molecular techniques has revolutionized our understanding of biofilm structure, composition, organization and activities, resulting in important advances in the prevention and treatment of biofilm-related diseases. The purpose of this book is to bring these advances to the attention of clinicians and medical researchers.

              Book Description

The history of natural sciences demonstrates that major advances in the understanding of natural processes follow the development of relevant tools. The progress of biofilm research is no different. While individual areas have mushroomed in recent years, difficulties in reproducing results, communicating new findings, and reconciling differences in conceptual versus mathematical advances are holding back the true growth of the field. Fundamentals of Biofilm Research offers a system of compatible tools and measurements that can be used to conduct biofilm studies and consistently interpret their results. After extensive testing and refinement in labs and classrooms over twenty years, the authors introduce a coherent system of conceptual, physical, computational, and virtual tools to help achieve reproducible results, align research specific parameters, ease difficulties in communication among disparate arenas, and implement consistent and reproducible procedures to interpret meaningful results. The authors reconcile the inability of computational methods to account for conceptual variables with the use of the stratified biofilm model. In this way researchers can combine the results of various measurements conducted within the space occupied by the biofilm. In addition to the wealth of information provided in the book, the authors also provide a CD with several software packages including extracting numerical parameters, computing nutrient concentration, calculating biokinetic parameters, controlling micropositioners, and measuring chemical concentration using microelectrodes. Emphasizing process analysis, engineering systems, biofilm applications, and mathematical modeling, Fundamentals of Biofilm Research provides the tools to synergize and unify research and advance biofilm research as a whole.

                  Book Description

This book details the widely accepted hypothesis that the majority of bacteria in virtually all ecosystems grow in matrix-enclosed biofilms. The author, who proposed this biofilm hypothesis, uses direct evidence from microscopy and from molecular techniques, presenting cogent reasons for moving beyond conventional culture methods that dominated microbiology throughout the last century. Bacteria grow predominantly in biofilms in all natural, engineered, and pathogenic ecosystems, and this book provides a solid basis for the understanding of bacterial processes in environmental, industrial, agricultural, dental and medical microbiology. Using a unique "ecological" perspective, the author explores the commensal and pathogenic colonization of human organ systems.

                        Book Description

Wiley Series in Ecological and Applied Microbiology, Ralph Mitchell, Series Editor

Biofilm processes profoundly impact industrial productivity and competitiveness. Their pervasive effects on water quality, power generation, energy efficiency, human and animal health, and product quality have compelled industries to observe the detrimental effects of biofilms. Although biofilms can be extremely costly to industry and harmful to health, they can also be highly beneficial in other applications. As a result, opportunities presented by biofilm systems for process innovation, analytical diagnosis, instrumentation development, biotechnological advances, and environmental benefits are tremendous.

Biofilms II: Process Analysis and Applications combines the fundamental principles of mathematics and physical sciences with the basics of biochemistry and molecular microbiology to explain the rapid advances in biofilm science and technology. The need for this updated edition is the result of combined interdisciplinary research efforts in biofilm science and engineering. In particular, the past decade has seen major advances in biofilm diagnostics, ecology dynamics, genetics, and transport phenomena. Included in this comprehensive volume is extensive coverage of:

Biofilms II will enhance the understanding of these complex microbial systems for `scientists and engineers in academics and industry.

"The book fulfills its promises and covers most, if not all new insights achieved in the field over the past ten years, and is to be recommended greatly for all those studying biofilms, both microbiologists and engineers. The book is written by authors from various disciplines, but carries the strong signature of the engineer." --Henk J. Busscher, University of Groningen

A welcome addition--the selection of authors is first-rate. It is very well-edited and constructed. The book is highly recommended for anyone interested in biofilms. In fact, it is a must for biofilm researchers. --Ron J. Doyle, Professor of Microbiology, University of Louisville

5 out of 5 stars A new light for Biofilms.......2000-06-03

This amazing new book opens a new doorway to biofilms for me. An excellent book, with new technological ideas that other books leave out. If bacteria could read they'd be breathless, which they are anyway for they don't have any mitochondria. Can't wait for the movie!

"well-written, well-illustrated and very current...The editor is to be congratulated for bringing together many diverse areas of biofilm technology to a coherent and meaningful form in this book." --AM Chkrabarty, University of Illinois at Chicago

"careful integration of the biology, engineering and applied aspects of biofilm research and development. Bryers has achieved a well-balanced view of modern concepts of the microbiology (including relevant ecology and molecular biological advances), process analysis (including stoichiometry, kinetics, reactor design and transport phenomena) and applications of biofilm technology in a wide variety of fields. He has achieved this by carefully condensing basic concepts...and selecting authors conversant with and contributing to concepts evolved over the past decade. Biofilms II is a welcome addition to modern biofilm literature." --Kevin Marshall, The University of New South Wales
