    Book Description

This book brings together a collection of innovative papers on strategies for analyzing the spatial and economic impacts of disasters. Natural and human-induced disasters pose several challenges for conventional modeling. For example, disasters entail complex linkages between the natural, built, and socio-economic environments. They often create chaos and economic disequilibrium, and can also cause unexpected long-term, structural changes. Dynamic interactions among agents and behavioral adjustments in a disaster become complicated. The papers in this volume make notable progress in tackling these challenges through refinements of conventional methods, as well as new modeling frameworks and multidisciplinary, integrative strategies. The papers also provide case study applications that afford new insights on disaster processes and loss reduction strategies.

5 out of 5 stars High School Teacher Loves This Book.......2000-11-04

I purchased this book last Spring to try and add some zip to my classes. I teach mainly seniors, and it seems that once the weather gets warm, school ends. I found that these organizers were not only novel and interesting, but helped many of my students recall information that they otherwise might not have. Sure, this book is aimed at a younger audience, but who says that graphic organizers for high school students can only be serious and made out of geometric shapes?

      5 out of 5 stars A Special Educator's Dream!.......2000-08-02

I teach a Special Day Class for non-severely handicapped 4th, 5th and 6th graders and am astounded at how easily this book lends itself to almost any area of my day! Many of my students have specific learning disabilities and the graphic organizers in this book are like a gold mine for them! I have watched students go from totally disorganized to turning out work comparable to that of the some of the students at the same grade level in Regular Education programs! Great book! Buy it!

Memory, Recall, the Brain & Learning provides over 40 proven, practical, and easy to implement activities and 35 organizers to encourage your students to become engaged in the learning process while in your classroom. Brain research has evidenced unprecedented levels of attention in education and learning endeavors. We have come to understand that "learning" is not merely an exercise in storing information for artificially engineered tests. Our interest and intent have evolved to encompass the notions of recall, long-term memory, and applications ~ not to mention life-long learning habits. Our goal in teaching and learning must be to create environments and conditions in which learners are more likely to make greater attempts at processing sufficiently for understanding and application, resulting in increased long-term memory. This book seeks to explore in detail a vital aspect of learning and the brain that supports the acquisition of sustained understanding. This book merges brain science research and educational best practice. Two profound works underpin the foundation for the strategies provided ~ Dr. Barbara Given's work on the natural learning systems of the brain and Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock review of the nine most effective educational strategies leading to student achievement. Dr. Greenleaf is a public school educator of 20 years. He has served as a school administrator at all levels as well as a professional development specialist at Brown University. He currently conducts workshops and consulting services full time. www.greenleaflearning.com With 25 years of experience in design, software, and education, Doris Wells-Papanek designs tailored tools and coaches learners to achieve their goals, organize their time, tasks, and thoughts. She also consults with designers, corporations, and universities to integrate the end-user's mindset into the product development process.

                    5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST-HAVE for teachers!!.......1999-07-23

This book offers detailed information about different critters that are "common" to a classroom in an interesting and "easy to read" way. It provides terrific experiements to conduct, and values following the chid's lead and interests- creating experiments from their questions! WONDERFUL!

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book to k-12 science teachers!.......1999-07-10

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in science experiments and the scientific method. It is appropriate for any child grades k-12, with minor adaptations. The writing is clear, concise and accurate. Most of the experiments involve insects. Materials are inexpensive and easy to obtain. The book contains lists of suppliers and references. Data charts and tables are included and need only be copied by a teacher.

                                      Book Description

This book offers an innovative alternative to the assumption that teeth merely crush, cut, shear or grind food, and demonstrates how teeth adapt to diet. Peter Lucas reveals how tooth form from the earliest mammals to humans can be understood using basic considerations about how different foods fracture. He outlines his theory step-by-step, providing an allometric analysis explaining the factors governing tooth shape and size. An easy-to-use appendix also provides basic mechanics, and methods of measurement. This volume will be essential reading for physical anthropologists and dental and food scientists.
