    Book Description

One part memoir, one part political platform, the bass player of Nirvana-the most heralded and influential rock band of the past 20 years-tells the story of his own musical and political coming-of-age. From his relationship to Kurt Cobain to his evolution as a political activist, Novoselic's passion, intelligence and integrity come shining through in this moving and inspirational book.

Though Krist Novoselic will undoubtedly be forever best known as a member of Nirvana, his accomplishments go far beyond that remarkable achievement. Nirvana was a band with a conscience, and as a major label act they regularly played benefits-the first Rock For Choice show, a major concert in support of gay rights, and a legendary gig that raised money for the Balkan Women's Aid Fund.

In 1995, Novoselic founded JAMPAC (Joint Artists and Music Promotions Political Action Committee), a proactive organization that advocated on behalf of Washington state's music community. Novoselic's work with JAMPAC helped Seattle club owners find ways to host all-ages shows and was instrumental in helping to overturn the infamous Teen Dance Ordinance. And sometimes making music and making a statement go hand in hand, as when Novoselic, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and drummer Gina Mainwal backed Jello Biafra as the "No W.T.O. Combo" at a show performed during the World Trade Organization conference held in Seattle in 1999.

There have been other musical endeavors since Nirvana, as well as new causes (Novoselic is a strong -supporter of electoral reform, an issue he writes about extensively on his website www.fixour.us). The one constant is Novoselic's desire to continue making progressive contributions to the community-and to keep on making good music.

Krist Novoselic currently lives in Seattle, Washington.

4 out of 5 stars Popular Music, Popular Government.......2006-12-18

Most of the world knows Novoselic as the bassist from the grunge band Nirvana. I know him as a neighbor and participant in local affairs. He is calm, well-spoken, careful with his words. And this is more than apparent in his book. There is no hysteria here; the book suffers from no hype. He merely -- and quite elegantly -- moves from the discussion of his participation in one of the great rock bands of all time to his participation in politics. And he offers a well thought-out discussion of the political reform he considers most important: Instant Runoff Voting.

We need, he argues, to make democracy relevant to more voters. And voters today realize quite well how rigged the current system is. It is rigged to decrease the breadth of ideas, the breadth of interests represented.

He believes that allowing voters with alternative views -- views alternative to the straitjacket of Left and Right, Democratic and Republican -- to vote for their views and yet not be penalized by our first-past-the-post plurality vote electoral system.

It's an interesting case. I'm sympathetic, though I am more interested in Condorcet voting than IRV. Still, Novoselic makes a clear, even compelling case for his favored reform. He wishes to bring government under greater citizen control by giving citizens the tools actually to do this. Very good. The book is highly recommended, even to those who don't give a fig about grunge rock. The engineering of democracy should be of interest to everybody, no?

5 out of 5 stars amazing , it kept me reading.......2006-02-18

i started reading this and i couldn't put it down. it was so interesting and it really opened up my eyes. krist is and amazing musician and this proves he is also an amazing writer. he deserves a lot of credit, for picking up the pieces after kurt died and for still succeeding in everything he does. you all should read this, its an awsome book.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for music fans and potential punk rock activists.......2005-11-18

I saw Krist read from this book at a music festival this summer. I was impressed by his passion and commitment but also by his detailed knowledge of the issues surrounding democratic reform. Perhaps he's not the most elegant writer, his prose is engaging and straightforward. It's a fun, quick, and inspiring read. I give copies out to teenage aspiring rockers who populate my town's all-ages shows as a way of teaching them about the history of underground music and also as a way of helping them figure out why it's important to be politically engaged.

4 out of 5 stars Tellin' it like it is.........2005-09-14

I think Krist Novoselic is a) A very kind human being b) a very smart human being c)an excellent musician d) more knowledgable about politics and government thatn I could ever be. This book is a testement to Novoselic's lust to learn about his country and how it works, and coming from a rock and roll party guy to someone who realized there was more to life than that. This book, Of grunge and government, is not aimed at stuck up intellectual snobs, and is not fit for their tongue wagging. This book is aimed at regular people, like myself, who know little about government and politics (for plain ignorance or lack of interest) and make it understandable and interesting, all while giving some new ideas toward improving things. I bought this mainly cause of the grunge aspect, but I found it to be thought provoking and worthwhile. Conservative jerks might lambast it (as here in this review forum), but Novoselic is no simpleton, ranter, or idealogue. He is what Dr. Phil wishes he was but could never be: the real deal.

    1 out of 5 stars What a complete load of bullsh*t, mmkay!!!.......2005-06-20

I tried to read this book mmkay, but it had more contradictory statements in it than Cartman's paper about eating food and tryin' to be skinny, mmmkay? I think he writes like Cartman, mmkay, because he writes so crappy mmmkay.

Let's try to leave the Nirvana bullhonkey aside because it is so overrated and craptacular, mmkay?

    Book Description

We used to have this saying: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." It was a powerful piece of wisdom. But then, the re-engineering fashion emerged and that changed everything. This book describes the behavior of the "creature" enterprise as it evolves in an increasingly complex universe. What is this elusive creature really like? Are we able to thoroughly understand its survival and reproduction mechanisms? The book offers a rather merciless analysis of the way things really work. It does so from a human perspective, as we, the people, are at the same time the perpetrators and the victims in the corporate game. The objective is not to indoctrinate or even convince, but to stimulate thought: Let's try to understand things, and then find ways to improve them, without breaking more than we already have.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating view of the "auto-pilot" of society........2004-03-07

This book is a very different, lively, and believable analysis of what is going on in corporations and society.

It is also very entertaining, written in a conversational tone with just a tiny hint of occasional European syntax that brings fond memories of long philosophical conversations over coffee. And moderate, looking at the whole picture -- stockholders, executives, middle managers, workers, customers, Wall Street analyts.

However, it does not offer solutions that look realistic -- one of them is better laws, which is quite impossible by the arguments presented in the book! I give it 4.5 stars, really, and if the solutions were workable, it'd be 10.

Folks who love the "Wackadamia" music CD by "Dr. Jane" will love this book.

      Book Description

Corporate budgeting is a joke, and everyone knows it. It consumes a huge amount of executives' time, forcing them into endless rounds of dull meetings and tense negotiations. It encourages line managers to lie and cheat, lowballing targets and inflating results. And it turns business decisions into elaborate exercises in gaming. The source of the problem is using budget targets to drive managers' compensation. In a traditional pay-for-performance compensation program, a manager earns a hurdle bonus when performance reaches a certain level. The bonus increases with performance until it hits a maximum cap. These "kinks" in the pay-for-performance line create incentives to game the system. When performance approaches the hurdle target, a manager will try to accelerate the realization of revenue and profit. When performance hits the cap, the manager has a strong incentive to push revenue and profit into the next year. To eliminate inducements to game the system, companies should adopt a purely linear pay-for-performance scheme that rewards actual performance, independent of budget targets.

          Book Description

Throughout 392 pages, How Our Garden Grows describes over 1200 perennials, most of them hardy or otherwise adaptable. They are arranged in alphabetized format. Species and cultivar descriptions follow thorough genus descriptions. An alphabetized list of common names is included for reference.

Included are cultural requirements, season of bloom, flower color, exceptional qualities and awards, and the year it might have first been planted in Perennial Passion's 7000 square foot demonstration garden. The author's personal reflections punctuate and enhance the reading and educational experience. The newest introductions are included, and there are many examples of why some cultivars or selections within a genus are better than others.

The 35 pages of essays include geographical and personal observations of the beautiful state of South Dakota, reverence for soil, an explanation of soil pH, how to plant a tree on a compacted site, and candid views on the terrible effects of soil compaction and the stripping away of top soil by many of today's builders. Fifteen pages of short subjects called "Tidbits and Leftovers" briefly address thirty other garden related topics from butterfly gardening, to earthworms, to soil amendments, to xeriscaping.

Line drawings are by Linda Shields and cover design is by Nathan Holman, both Sioux Falls artists.

This book has a lot to offer, even though it is staged outside of the United States. This would be a good book if you were a Boy Scout. The projects and hints would be appealing to that age group. There are good insites into the way nature works and what to look for when out camping or hiking.

5 out of 5 stars Good for natural explorers, young and old, or family.......2007-04-09

The book is interesting. My kids, 4 and 7, and I like to explore the outdoors. The book includes the 5 major classes of vertebrates and most types of invertebrates, and plants. In addition to a lot of information for adult professional naturalists, it also tells you what you can do for fun as an amateur naturalist right in your yard or at home, e.g., put a beautiful spider web on a cardboard, make an ant town, make your own snake stick, make a pitfall trap, etc. Good for homechoolers or any family who like to explore with their kids. That's why the title is "The Amateur Naturalist."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Simply beautiful........2000-07-18

In one lavishly illustrated and well-written volume, Gerald Durrell takes readers on a pocket tour of the infinite variety of the creatures that inhabit planet Earth and at the same time provides a brief tutorial on the methods and importance of simple, hands-on biological research. This is a gift of the first rank for any scientifically-inclined child, and great for adults too.

5 out of 5 stars A marvellous guide for the beginner by the ultimate amateur.......2000-04-17

As readers of 'My Family and Other Animals' will be aware, Gerald Durrell's passion for animals was a constant throughout his life, and his legacy survives in the form of the Jersey Zoo, an institution devoted to the preservation of endangered species. Durrell was also a writer of tremendous charisma and charm, recounting his adventures around the world in a prose that is often unmatched in nature writing.

In 'The Amateur Naturalist', Gerald and wife Lee set out to create the sort of guide for which the much younger Durrell, loose among the wildlife of Corfu, would likely have killed (humanely, though). Broken down by habitats, with coloured illustrations and thoughtful, enjoyable text descriptions, 'The Amateur Naturalist' is a treasure trove for anyone interested in studying the world around them, no matter the part of the world in which they might live. Although you needn't be an actual collector in order to enjoy this book, there is also information on how to begin collecting wild flora and fauna (there is no recommendation, however, on the keeping of snakes in the bath or spiders in matchboxes).

For anyone that knows and loves nature, or would like to know more, this is definitely the book to have.

              5 out of 5 stars This I a great book - read it.......2000-03-21

I found this in my local library and loved it. Now I'm trying to get a copy and I hope this works. I you find nature/biology at all interesting, this is the book for you. If Durrell wasn't my favorite author anyways this would make him my favorite for sure.

5 out of 5 stars If your a young biologist, this book is perfect!.......1999-08-13

In my teen years, I was very interested in biology and the world around me (from insects to birds to fungi). This book gave me inspiration and a basic knowledge of biological collecting and preservation. I am a graduate student in biology now (studying entomology); part of my success comes from having used this book. Thank you, Durrell!

              5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......1999-06-17

Durrell is a wonderful scientist, an excellent writer and a born philosopher. For anyone who is interested in nature (as everyone should be) you will come to understand it and love it through this book. Great pictures. Let spiders live! It's not out of date and it should not be out of print either!

When I first acquired this book many years ago, I was in awe of the attension to detail Vinson Brown poured into the book. It profoundly affected my ability to observe the world around me. Molecular biology has and is doing great things for humanity, however, it is through patient observation of the natural world we come to understand it. Vinson Brown's other books are very good as well, I would suggest collecting them all before they go out of print or further interest is lost in natural science.

                  4 out of 5 stars Seeing Nature.......2000-11-14

A well written piece, so self explanatory that any novice easily use it. It is loaded with well drawn pictures and charts, and not only deals with subjects such as cloud recognition and rock collecting but how to capture bugs, trap building instructions are included.

It deals with just about every aspect of nature all at a very easy to read level for either the casual stroller to the serious student. So you can gather walk along and enjoy knowing what things are actually learn about a certain plants or animals. This is really fun book I take it along on road trips with my kids and have a blast at the beach collecting pill bugs and burrowing ghost shrimp. Now that I know there names I can tell everyone what they are.

Durrell seems incapable of writing a bad book - his ever-so-lively wittiness and ability to describe different people and animals in a funny way are truly amazing!

So, this is a good book - not quite as breathtaking as his masterpieces ("My Family And Other Animals", "The Garden Of The Gods", "A Zoo In My Luggage" and others), but certainly amusing. Durrell describes, to quote him, "how to shoot an amateur naturalist" - in other words, how nature likes to treat people that try to film it (throw in some human nature and you should have a clear picture). This is one of his books written later than the most popular ones, so he is accompanied by his second wife, Lee, instead of Jackie (whom I'd grown quite fond of).

There's not much more I can tell you if you're familiar with Durrell - because, if you are, you'll probably read this book and all the others as soon as you get your hands on them. That's what a sensible person would do... If you aren't familiar with his works - well, I doubt I'll be able to convince you to read him anyway, but you should - oh! - you should. Just start with his other works, perhaps (the ones I menioned earlier, for example).

A good book. Not excellent, but reasonably good.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for the new Conservationist!.......2005-04-25

MANY projects to try at home using basic supplies, within two weeks of buying the book my three year old and I started all sorts of Science experiments and are now keeping a detailed Nature/ Bird/ Plant journal and have decided to turn the back yard into a Natural Habitat. Well written and easy to understand, even for the newbie like myself.

                  Covers:
                  1.) How to get started
                  2.) Items you will need
3.)How to keep track of your records

Our next project is to grow our own moss on flower pots from spores. This book made my daughter and I both more aware of nature and the animals around us. Wish I could find more great books like this one for our collection.
