Book Description
In todayÆs turbulent business environment, the conventional bases of competitive strategy are increasingly being eroded. In such an environment, the ability to generate and acquire new knowledge is becoming an essential prerequisite for success. This emerging paradigm of business treats knowledge and learning as the singular basis not only for competitive success, but also for corporate survival. Most books on the subject adopt either one of two mutually exclusive approachesùthe first places emphasis on learning as an activity internal to the organization, while the second views learning as a resource to be leveraged by the organization. In Competing Through Knowledge, the first to emanate from India on the subject, Dr. Madhukar Shukla integrates both these approaches and focuses not only on how organizations learn, but also on how they can (and do) use knowledge and learning as strategic weapons to transform their operating paradigms. Beginning with a discussion on the radical changes taking place in the Indian business environment and the need for Indian organizations to develop learning capabilities, the first part of the book provides a framework to understand the dynamics of knowledge-based competition. The second part details six case studies of organizations that have encouraged learning and have utilized knowledge as a competitive asset. Generalizing from these cases, which also serve as benchmarks, the third and last part discusses the architecture of a learning organization and the qualitative shift required in the organization paradigm. Illustrating the ideas and concepts with real-life examples and case studies, including several from India, this book demonstrates the applicability of the new paradigm of the learning organization in the changing Indian business environment. This extremely readable book will appeal to CEOs, practicing managers, human resource professionals, and management consultants. It will also serve as supplementary reading for courses on the learning organization, strategic management, and organizational change.

An Essential Guide to Managing Learning Times.......2000-04-03
Dr. Madhukar Shukla has been referred to as the "indian guru of the learning organisation" and in this book he shows why. Drawing on the theories of giants, he builds up a case for managing in the times when the capital (the K in economics) is Knowledge and vastly different from the traditional capital. As an entity knowledge is tacit and proprietary and as it becomes more explicit it becomes freely available. It is Dr. Shukla's contention that like truth, "knowledge will out" and it makes no sense for organizations to try to put locks on its mobility. Why like truth?...knowledge is truth!
With the examples of case studies of organisations like ABB, British Airways, GE, Citicorp and Xerox , Dr. Shukla shows us how successful corporations around the world are recognising this fact and are trying innovative ways to leverage this capital for competitive advantage...to turnaround themselves, to transform and to innovate.
What makes this book doubly enjoyable, is that it steers as clear of dobbledegook management jargon as much as possible..and when the author has to resort to jargon, they are suitably explained in lay terms. Coupled with examples strewn throughout the book, the often esoteric theories start to make startling sense and sock you between the eye. This book is a must read to all professionals and management people of all hues!

Book Description
In recent years, the development of biological pest control strategies has focused on the chemical profiles of insect-plant interactions. Plants exhibit an extensive range of defensive strategies, which include insect avoidance, deterrence and antibiosis. The need to overcome these vegetative defence responses has driven the evolution of an array of detoxifying mechanisms, which have become the hallmark of the phytophagous insects' chemical ecology. This volume presents the advances made on phytochemcial biopesticides, covering behavioural, chemical, biochemical and molecular levels of the field. The role of Phytochemicals in integrated pest management is also addressed, whilst discussing the problems and prospects of biopesticides for commercial exploitation. The volume provides a comprehensive overview for graduate students, research scientists and professionals in chemical ecology, insect-plant interactions, phytochemistry, chemistry and biochemistry of insects, and insect toxicology.

Book Description
Plants provide a remarkable diversity of useful products such as food, medicines, spices, pesticides, fragrances, and stimulants. For many of these products or their synthetic successors, agriculture and phytochemistry have been critical to their development. The volume brings together noted
authorities on the subject to discuss three topics broadly related to phytochemistry and agriculture: phytochemicals in crop production, adverse effects of phytochemicals, and production of phytochemicals by field crops and tissue culture. Specific topics include new concepts in crop protection,
development of insecticides and tritrophic interactions, toxic substances, and the use and production of tannins, Ginkgo biloba extracts, essential oils, and fats. This book will be welcomed by students and researchers of phytochemistry, plant physiology, biochemistry, and agronomy.

Book Description
Most people dream about someday owning a business, but dreams are often no match for the reality of the red tape and regulations involved in actually getting a business up and running. Small Time Operator shows the way. The most popular start-up guide ever written, it covers every aspect of small business ownership, including getting the proper permits and licenses; financing; choosing a location; creating an effective business plan; whether or not to incorporate; recordkeeping; setting up a bookkeeping system; hiring employees; insurance; federal, state, and local taxes; dealing with the IRS; franchises; doing business on the internet; and much more. This new edition has been updated to reflect current changes in the tax code and business management principles. Clearly written and fun to read, the book breaks down the seemingly complex process of opening a business into a simple step-by-step procedure — and helps turn the small business dream into reality.

Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06
This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.
Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16
The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.
Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.
Good Information for the Entrepeneur.......2007-05-07
A great resource for anyone who is setting up or running a small business.
Has good practical information that the typical small business owner needs.
The umpteenth edition, still going strong.......2007-03-25
I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Check out reviews on amazon of the previous editions.

Not sure about newer versions..........2006-02-23
I have a version of this book that my father in law purchased in 1993. I know quite about about small business topics, and I learned so much of the little missing items from this book. My father-in-law has a million of these books on starting a small business, which he loaned to us when we started ours.
I quickly put the others down after scanning through a few chapters and not finding much information. All the books seem to be on choosing names, locations, and "Starting" a business. I wanted more information on "Running" our business, which is exactly what I found.
I scanned through a few pages, and what I read was so great that I went back and started from the beginning and read every word I saw. I truly found this book to be the most informative and realistic book out there.
I haven't purchased a newer version, because I still use mine. Infact I re-read many of the chapters every week, they are still valuable to me. This book sits right on top of my filing shelves.
I did, however, purchase the software from the bell springs website yesterday.
I use quickbooks and also a written record (using accrual and cash methods) and balance them out together. I really liked the forms he uses in the back of his book, they are so simple, yet really cover everything I need. That is why I purchased the software so I could use them.
My opinion of this book is very high, simply I beleive it is the best I have ever found. (By the way, Bell Springs Publishing website has a money back guarantee also) We run a service shop now, I hope to open a small retail shop soon, and I will be using this book for that as well. In fact I already am, to figure out how I will set up all my information on a different type of business.
Small Time Operator.......2004-07-01
"Small Time Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff makes you wonder if he ever made it big or just remained small. I agree this is not the bible of business practices. However, the info isn't all that bad. It just lacks real meat.
Not particularly helpful.......2004-05-27
There are better books on how to start and run a business. This one is long on words and short on useful, practical information. Reads more like an accountant trolling for business by harping on complications than a genuine self-help book.
I bought based on the recommendation of a (well-written) book on self-publishing. Wish I'd read Amazon's comments first and spent my money elsewhere.
Not a BIBLE but a decent start........2004-04-25
First of all, let me say that I do not agree with the five star reviews nor do I agree with the 1 star reviews. That said, I feel this book is smack in between and does offer some useful information, especially for the newbie to business.
Five stars reviewers are too generous and 1 star reviewers are way too critical.
Good book and worth a read.

This is a waste of money........1999-04-09
The book is 142 pages, and 80+ pages are blanks to fill in schedules, or have one quote, or are really blank. The rest of it is even more useless than that. If I could have given it minus stars I would have.

Easy Bookkeeping.......2005-02-19
First of all, this is NOT the original (and famous) Small Time Operator, which is a great small business guidebook. This is a CD (and instruction manual) that will set you up with a very easy-to-use set of business ledgers, identical to the ledgers described in the original Small Time Operator (which does not include a CD). This CD creates ledgers on a spreadsheet program. It works with Excel (part of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works) and Lotus 1-2-3. If you find complicated programs such as QuickBooks frustrating, I think you'll love these simple spreadsheets. There is no "learning curve." You open Excel (or Lotus), pop in the disk, click on the ledger you want (income, expenses, inventory, etc.) and type in your numbers. That's it: Instant ledger, that you can save on your computer or print out. The disk includes 23 ledgers and worksheets. The manual includes instructions how to use the disk (which are about as easy as I described above), shows samples of all the ledgers, explains how to use business ledgers.
Very good reference.......2000-02-14
'Small-Time Operator' is a very good book for the new small business owner, with many anecdotes from other business owners, and a thorough discussion of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations, the tax laws applicable, and other bookkeeping/finance fundamentals.
The early chapters on how to choose a business, dos and don'ts, is not (as I see it) as informative, so don't get the book for that reason. Read it for the (very useful) information on the nuts and bolts of running your business successfully.
I think there might be a later edition (1995?) that will be more topical.
