Book Description
The original contributions in Fair Trade and Harmonization investigate the growing conflict between free trade policies and the domestic environmental, labor, and antitrust policies of individual nations. They clarify the issues and offer a critical economic and legal analysis of the contending positions along with a series of proposals for resolving or reconciling them. Taken together, the two volumes present a comprehensive catalog of the government actions that are causing conflict in these areas and a critique of the existing scholarly literature on the subject.
In each area, the contributors extensively discuss and analyze forms of policy harmonization and the arguments for and against it, with a goal of better understanding as a constant throughout. A more particular goal, however is to take a sober second look at, and impose some restraint upon, the growing chorus of demands to push aside the existing trade institution (the World Trade Organization) in the name of social policies, especially those regarding environmental and labor rights.

Book Description
New statistical tools are changing the ways in which scientists analyze and interpret data and models. Many of these are emerging as a result of the wide availability of inexpensive, high speed computational power. In particular, hierarchical Bayes and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods for analysis provide consistent framework for inference and prediction where information is heterogeneous and uncertain, processes are complex, and responses depend on scale. Nowhere are these methods more promising than in the environmental sciences. Models have developed rapidly, and there is now a requirement for a clear exposition of the methodology through to application for a range of environmental challenges.

Book Description
This revised edition of the first English-language monograph on the interdisciplinary science of landscape ecology provides a current overview of this rapidly growing subject. The book provides a unified conceptual and methodological framework for a field which is both local and global in its implications, and places human activities into context in the ecosystem.
Landscape Ecology is ideally suited for use as a text in a wide range of courses on ecology-based land and resource planning, environmental management, natural resources policy, international development, regional planning, landscape geography and human ecology. It will also be of interest to the professional researcher, educator and decision-maker who deals with man's relationship to his natural and cultural environment.

The Third Edition retains a broad scope and completely integrates the applied sections into the theories of ecology showing how the theories are applied in the real world. Emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving. Discusses what is currently known about a topic as well as what is yet unknownemphasizing that future study in the discipline can lead to important contributions. Completely new first chapter, introductionDiscusses the four main sections of the book: behavioral, population, community, and ecosystems ecology. Expanded coverage of behavioral and ecosystems ecology includes a new chapter which features sections on mating systems, sex ratios, habitat selection, dispersal and age structure. Includes discussions on energy flow; features a new, independent chapter for nutrient cycles; separate chapters on species richness, diversity, stability, succession and biogeography. Discusses non-equilibrium theories in coverage of stability and touches on cluster analysis and ordination in discussion of diversity. Broad discussion of evolutionary biology to put conservation and biodiversity in perspective. For ecolgists and environmental scientists.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book for independent study.......2005-05-12
I am a junior-high student who is interested in envirnomental science and plan to study ecology in college. This book was helpful for learning about some of the big ideas in ecology, the problems that scientists are studying and why they matter. I think it is an outstanding book for someone who wants to see the big picture, but be prepared to read carefully and maybe read again some chapters. The bibliography was helpful for tracking the original sources of experiments and studies that the author mentiones in the book, too.
Good Book, Easy to Read but Lacking in through explanation.......2004-09-12
This was my text book when taking Ecology and Peter Stiling the author of the book was my instructor. It is written EXACTLY word for word as he lectures. I understood everything in the book and in class but I'm afraid some of the topics aren't explained as completely as they could be. I was left not understanding certain things, from being to end that is and much of the text needs to be explained in more depth by an instructor. It is probably because most of the text involves statistics. Great INTRODUCTORY Text but definitely requires an instructor.
One of those over-educated types responds.......2003-02-19
What you have in the previous review is a perfect example of the type of students prevalent in the US higher education system today.... crying, "Give us Science Lite!" Heaven forfend that you should have to apply a formula in what is perhaps the most QUANTITATIVE of all the biological sciences, ecology!! Now having vented, let me say that Stiling's book is certainly not the perfect introductory text- in fact I find it LACKING in detail in some respects- but it isn't a bad choice at all for the introduction of interested students to the study of life on the planet we inhabit.
insular academic chatter.......2002-02-22
I was assigned this as a text for a college class, which I subsequently dropped after reading the book. What I had wanted was a basic introduction to the concepts of the science of ecology. What I got instead was unnecessary academic references and page after page of statistical methodology. These might be important in a graduate class or a professional journal, but they are woefully out of place in an introductory textbook. This book is a perfect example of what is wrong with the modern technocratic university: overspecialized PhDs, preoccupied with methodology, writing for each other, and unable to communicate with anyone outside their disciplines. It is a lousy tool for teaching and learning. If I were you I'd run screaming.

Book Description
During the 1970s and 1980s, mutation breeding made a tremendous contribution to crop improvement. Now, as the techniques of molecular biology become more widely adopted by plant breeders, this comprehensive summary sets mutation breeding in a contemporary context and relates it to other breeding techniques, including the most recently developed. The book opens with a general introduction to plant breeding and a review of the development of mutation breeding, including consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of the technique. Chapters covering the underlying theory are followed by sections that consider more practical aspects such as in vitro techniques, techniques used for seed propagated crops and techniques used for vegetatively propagated crops. Case studies and examples are included throughout and a list of over 1200 references provides a valuable resource for those new to the field.

Book Description
For forty years, in a variety of books and articles, Gerhard Lenski has become the most influential proponent of ecological and evolutionary explanations of human societies, their development and transformations, from the Stone Age to the present. In his newest book, Lenski offers a succinct but comprehensive statement of the full body of his theory followed by demonstration of how it can be used to generate new and valuable insights when applied to a set of highly diverse issues. These include debates concerning the origin of ancient Israel and its distinctive culture, the rise of the West in the modern era, the highly varied trajectories of development of Third World nations in recent decades, and the failure of Marxist efforts to transform society in the Soviet Union and elsewhere. In the concluding chapter, Lenski discusses a number of other issues and areas where ecological-evolutionary theory may be fruitfully applied in the future.

Book Description
How do people react to the visual character of their surroundings? What can planners do to improve the aesthetic quality of these surroundings? Too often in environmental design, visual quality--aesthetics--is misunderstood as only a minor concern, dependent on volatile taste and thus undefinable. Yet a substantial body of research indicates the importance of visual quality in the environment to the public and has uncovered systematic patterns of human response to visual attributes of the built environment. Efforts to understand environmental aesthetics have been undertaken by investigators from such diverse fields as landscape architecture, environmental psychology, geography, philosophy, architecture, and city planning. As a result the relevant information is scattered and not readily available to professionals and policy makers. The book brings together classic and new contributions by distinguished workers in different disciplines. It explores theory and data on preferences in the visual environment, and also addresses the practical application of aesthetic criteria in design, planning and public policy. Promising directions for future research are identified.
Customer Reviews:
Towards an understanding of our environmental influences.......2000-06-04
The present book shows delightully how there has been a lot of research on the field of environmental psychology, having a strong relation with Industrial Design and Architecture. It consists of three parts, first the theory on the field, then there is the section on the practice of this field, which, in my opinion, is the best part, because it shows the different relevant experiments done in the past years which have made empirical evidence of the importance of our environment, and its influence on ourselves as human beings. It has some that are about lighting, some about street advertising, and some others about urban and rural landscapes. The following part of the book is more of a conclusion, but it still highlights important aspects of environmental psychology, in relation to architecture, and why it it worth studying it. The book is a perfect guide for those who are interested in feeling better in their own homes, and who want to change places in order to feel one way or another in them. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This book describes the theoretical development of a suite of advanced scattering models necessary for interpreting fisheries and zooplankton acoustics, before presenting state of the art data processing techniques. Systematic development of scattering models of targets with different geometric and physical properties are presented, reflecting scientific advances in scattering modeling over the past few decades. The authors hope this book can also be used as a reference or guide book for acoustic scientists to understand the underlying physics behind acoustic scattering by aquatic fauna, enabling them to process and interpret the recorded acoustic data correctly.
